Reflecting on the Class of 2023: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Resilience Amidst the Pandemic and Unforeseen Hardship

As we commemorate the Aspen High School graduating class of 2023, it is impossible to overlook the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students faced unprecedented challenges and disruptions during freshman and sophomore years, requiring them to navigate uncharted territories with flexibility and adaptability. Today, we honor their strength and celebrate their remarkable accomplishments amidst adversity.

The arrival of the pandemic brought forth an abrupt shift in the educational landscape. The class of 2023, six months into their journey into high school, found themselves thrust into a world of remote learning, social distancing, and uncertainty. The traditional high school experience, such as dreams of high school dances and playing on athletic teams, transformed into a new normal of virtual classrooms and limited social interactions.

Despite these unforeseen circumstances, the class of 2023 quickly embraced technology to connect with peers and teachers. Through their resourcefulness and determination, they found innovative ways to maintain a sense of community and support one another, even from a distance.

However, the pandemic’s impact extended beyond the virtual realm. The class of 2023 also faced personal and emotional challenges.

The isolation and separation from their usual support systems took a toll on their mental well-being. They grappled with feelings of

loneliness, anxiety, and uncertainty about their future. Yet, in the face of these adversities, demonstrated strength and resilience, seeking out resources and support networks to navigate these difficult times.

Amidst the unique challenges, the class of 2023’s commitment to their education remained unwavering.They showed remarkable tenacity in pursuing their academic goals, often going the extra mile to excel in their studies while adjusting to online coursework, shifting deadlines, and modified curriculum.

Moreover, the pandemic experience instilled in the class of 2023 a heightened sense of empathy and social consciousness. Witnessing the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on communities worldwide, they became more aware of the interconnectedness of our global society. This realization inspired many of them to engage in volunteer work, community service, and activism to address the inequalities exacerbated by the pandemic, such as food drives. In total, the class of 2023 submitted an extraordinary 20,167 service hours representing the impact of the class on the community.

They emerged as compassionate individuals with a deep understanding of the importance of collective action and social responsibility.

As the class of 2023 prepares to graduate and embark on new adventures, they carry invaluable lessons learned during their freshman and sophomore years amidst the pandemic. They have developed resilience, adaptability, and

empathy—traits that will undoubtedly serve them well in their future endeavors.

To the Aspen High School class of 2023, we commend you for your strength, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to education despite the challenges you faced during these unprecedented times and the loss of a beloved member of our community, Carson Clettenberg. Your ability to navigate through uncertainty and embrace change is a testament to your character and fortitude.

As you step into the next chapter of your lives, there is no doubt that the experiences and lessons from the pandemic will shape you into compassionate, resilient, and forward-thinking individuals. Your impact on the world has already begun, and we eagerly anticipate the incredible contributions you will make to society.

CAROLINE CARES

Caroline Cares, the AHS librarian of two years, is know for her encouragement, resourcefulness, and welcoming nature. We would like to acknowledge all the work she has done printing numerous documents for students, adding variety and diversity to the school’s collection of books, and organizing her book club. Caroline’s dedication expands beyond the library’s curation and grants new opportunities to the AHS student body, such as conversation with author Geraldine Brook’s about her latest novel, Horse. Notably, Cares asserts that books foster empathy.

“Caroline is someone who you can always go to whether it be an English paper or personal needs, she is ready to help with an air of responsibility and comfort. She has a trivia of the day that always challenges and excites. The graphic novel book club she helps run is a welcoming, fun environment. She shares her enthusiasm for literature and art with us and we discuss everything from literary themes to representation in media. She encourages a wide variety of stories and perspectives in the library and possesses an incredible insight into human connection.” - Abigail Plummer “Caroline Cares is a wonderful librarian and person. She is kind and genuinely cares about the students. I’m so grateful for her and would not be where I am today without her loving support. ADAM CHENEY

Adam Cheney spent his time at AHS teaching IB Psychology, IB History, and world geography. Cheney’s classes are always lively, and often feature relevant photos or anecdotes from his time abroad. Cheney’s international perspective bolsters his ability to provide an accurate and holistic account of history. Students are eager to “get historical,” each time they enter his classroom. AHS will greatly miss Cheney as he begins teaching in Brazil, but will remain appreciative of his additions to our school’s culture.

SHERI SMITH

Sheri Smith is support of her students endeavors both in and outside of the classroom. She acts as a mentor for students in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), connects members of the National Honors Society with service opportunities, and acts as a resource for students in the Gay-Straight Alliance. Her empathy has fostered a more inclusive and equitable AHS, particularly for queer students. In the classroom she is know for having faith in her students and granting them independence when it comes to completing coursework.

MEGAN NOONAN

Megan Noonan truly exemplifies everything a teacher should be. Her passion for mathematics and teaching extends far beyond instructional hours, as demonstrated by her wall of math memes and collection of numerous math related shirts. She cares deeply about all of her students, and we appreciate her efforts to get to know them as individuals.

Noonan is deeply dedicated to her student’s success and goes beyond what is required of her instruction to ensure that they understand the material.

NADIA VONDERHAAR

Nadia Vonderhaar goes the extra mile to engage her students, utilizing creativity, adaptability, and careful selection of materials to make lessons clear and enjoyable. She has a good read on her students and tailors to their needs and pace that best match their learning. Vonderhaar is known best for her eagerness to help her students, whether that is providing individualized feedback, opportunities to ensure students understand all topics, or her many TI-84 calculators and chargers.

SARAH WARD

Sarah Ward runs AHS’ journalism and yearbook programs. She is known for seeing her students’ full potential, and having faith in their efforts. Her classes are distinct in that they center discussion and collaboration amongst peers. She often acts more as an advisor, giving students the ability to explore their passions. We would like to express our utmost appreciation for her teaching style as it has informed numerous students’ post-secondary plans. Additionally, the structure of her courses encourage students to take-on leadership roles, deepening their dedication to the Skier Scribbler and/or Yearbook and empowering personal development.

This scholarship helps promising and principled students access a college education. ASPEN THRIFT SHOP SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Fatima Flores, Kiara Gonzalez, Finlay Johnson, Ricardo Saucedo Founded in 1949, the Aspen Thrift Shop is one of the community’s largest funders, making significant grants to hundreds of nonprofit organizations and schools every year. The Thrift Shop also awards scholarships to graduating seniors in Aspen, Basalt and Carbondale who demonstrate academic promise, have had extracurricular involvement and represent the Thrift Shop’s spirit of participation, community service, and volunteerism.

ASPEN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT: WILLARD CLAPPER SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Sophie Genshaft Willard Clapper was the former Aspen Volunteer Fire Department Chief and a volunteer firefighter for 35 years. Willard was a native Aspenite and a very beloved teacher in the Aspen Elementary and Middle Schools for decades. He firmly believed in the value of their Outdoor Education Program. He had a brilliant sense of humor and was a powerful positive influence in our community.

CARSON CLETTENBERG INCLUSIVITY AWARD Awarded to: Sophie Genshaft, Michael Quintanilla-Salido Established by an Aspen High School parent, this award honors the memory of Carson Clettenberg. Two students, nominated by the Class of 2023, are recognized for living by Carson’s example and consistently going out of their way to make a positive change in the lives of people around them. The award is generously funded by the DPL Fund.

“COUNT ON ME” SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation Awarded to: Lilly Justice This scholarship was established in memory of long-time local, Carol Dopkin’s steadfast equine companion named Count on Me and nicknamed Maggie. Count on Me recognizes students who can be counted on to be there for their friends and classmates offering unconditional support and reliability.

FLATIRONS/CHAPIN WRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Connor Stephen This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who shows qualities of leadership in the areas of athletics and academics and within the social fabric of the Aspen High School community. The Flatirons scholarship was established by Sue and Chuck Hall.

Chapin Wright was the recipient of the Flatirons Scholarship in 1972. Unfortunately, he was tragically killed in an automobile accident on his way to the senior party.

THE FUTURES FUND SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Peter de Wetter The Futures Fund, established in 2018, is a scholarship program founded by a diverse group of Aspen High School alumni who love and value the community that raised them.

The Futures Fund founders tribute their successes to the sacrifices made by parents, teachers, coaches, and community members who made it their mission to ensure a great education, safe neighborhoods, and countless opportunities to participate in sports. The only way the founders know to repay their debt of gratitude is to continue down the path laid before them. The Futures Fund, therefore, is

about honoring those who came before and by helping those who will come after. The Futures Fund is now welcoming other AHS alumni and members of the Aspen community to join their cause and donate for the 2024 scholarship. GUNILLA ISRAEL ASHER SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation Awarded to: Chloe Smith The Gunilla Israel Asher Scholarship was established to carry forward the legacy of the beautiful, brave, valiant warrior and former Aspen Times Publisher, Gunilla Asher, who lost her fight with cancer in 2014 after a lengthy and heroic battle. Gunilla was 42 years old. Gunilla loved all things Aspen, was the life of every party and the goodness behind so many selfless acts.

JASPER MOUNTAIN IDEAS & INVENTIONS SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Andrew Bass This award remembers Jasper who lost his precious life to cancer at the age of 24 years.

He was funny and incredibly bright. Ideas and inventions flowed from Jasper like words from the lips of a poet. The Ideas and Inventions Scholarship is a venue for students who might shy away from the limelight. It holds the promise of merging established ideas with the ideas of unfettered, untethered youth.

JOHN HAINES OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Lillian Huggard The John Haines Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a strong work ethic, good citizenship and who will attend college in the state of Colorado.

LES DAMES D’ASPEN SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Isabella Poschman Founded in 1983, Les Dames d’Aspen contributes to local arts organizations and to a college scholarship for an Aspen High School graduating senior. The scholarship is awarded to a student who displays great character and a commitment to further study of the arts, particularly performing arts.

Haley Rinaldi graduated from Aspen High School in 2010 and is remembered as an exceptional soccer player. This scholarship is awarded to a senior female soccer player who has exhibited some of Haley’s great character and team player strengths both on and off the field.

C. WELTON ANDERSON FACULTY AWARDS C. Welton Anderson, a long time Aspen resident, was an architect, Chairman of the Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission and an Aspen Historical Society Trustee. He died at the age of 41 on December 11, 1991. The C. Welton Anderson awards are selected by the Aspen High School faculty and staff.
