The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants from 22,000 high schools each year. National Merit semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis and are students who score within the top one percent on the PSAT.
