The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants from 22,000 high schools each year.

National Merit semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis and are students who score within the top one percent on the PSAT.

The Aspen Promise was founded by the Lichtenwalter Family in honor of their sons Joel, Eric, Craig and Trent and strengthened by the Styslinger Family, Steven and Kiki Esrick, and the Esther Pearlstone family. This scholarship helps promising and principled students access a college education. In addition to the 6 scholarship recipients in the Class of 2022, The Aspen Promise provided renewal scholarships to 10 past recipients.

Awarded to: Stella McAniff, Declan O’Donoghue The Alex Terral Memorial Writing Scholarship is awarded to a senior writer who, like Alex, sought the serious challenge and satisfaction of thoughtful writing in prose fiction, prose nonfiction, and creative writing.

Awarded to: Adriana Cipponeri, Sophia Greiper, Samuel Vesey The Aspen Chapel began awarding scholarships to deserving Aspen High School seniors in 2007. The scholarships provide recognition to graduating seniors for their efforts in contributing a positive spirit to the community through good citizenship and a willingness to help others.

Aspen Community Theatre’s mission is to create opportunities to participate in, learn from, and experience live theatre. Aspen Community Theatre is proud to support local students through scholarships for high school seniors who are interested in pursuing the performing arts in college.

Aspen Board of Realtors, Bill Heldman/Stark King scholarship committee began awarding scholarships to students in 1985. Academic promise and involvement in extracurricular activities and volunteer work are strongly considered in awarding this scholarship.

Scholarship awards have increased in recent years due to the untimely death of one of the founders and an ardent supporter of the scholarship fund, Rick Griffin, and the memorial contributions made in his loving memory.

ASPEN CANCER CONFERENCE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Funded by generous community sponsors of the Gridiron Classic annual golf tournament, this scholarship recognizes the dedication and commitment it takes to play high school football. The recipient of this scholarship is a senior football player from Aspen High School who displays remarkable character strengths on and off the field, not necessarily a student that intends to pursue football in college. The recipient will have attended AHS during both their junior and senior years, played AHS football both of these years with plans to attend an accredited 2-4 year institution or vocational program.

ASPEN THRIFT SHOP SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Nadia Debska, Miranda Galindo Flores, Gemma Goss, Simon Holloway, George Morrison, Sergio Ruiz Zuniga Founded in 1949, the Aspen Thrift Shop is one of the community’s largest funders, making significant grants to hundreds of nonprofit organizations and schools every year. The Thrift Shop also awards scholarships to graduating seniors in Aspen, Basalt and Carbondale who demonstrate academic promise, have had extracurricular involvement and represent the Thrift Shop’s spirit of participation, community service, and volunteerism.

ASPEN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT: DOUGLAS PUMPELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

1st ANNUAL GARY S. SNYDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to: Braden Haisfield

Gary was a long-time local and former AHS Head Golf Coach and he alwayssupported academics and athletics, especially golf. Some of his mottos were -”do the right thing” and “never quit” - we hope this small award helps ourscholarship recipient achieve their goals each year.

Doug Pumpelly was an elected Chief of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department. He was a generous man with a huge heart who grew up in Aspen and worked as a skilled auto mechanic. This scholarship, originally created in 1995, is awarded to a student who is interested primarily in a two-year college degree in order to pursue a career in a vocational/technical field or in the fire service.

WILLARD CLAPPER SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Elizabeth Dangler, Sophia Mandt Willard Clapper was the former Aspen Volunteer Fire Department Chief and a volunteer firefighter for 35 years. Willard was a native Aspenite and a very beloved teacher in the Aspen Elementary and Middle Schools for decades. He firmly believed in the value of their Outdoor Education Program. He had a brilliant sense of humor and was a powerful positive influence in our community.

“COUNT ON ME” SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation Awarded to: Kara Van Alstine This scholarship was established in memory of long-time local, Carol Dopkin’s steadfast equine companion named Count on Me and nicknamed Maggie. Count on Me recognizes students who can be counted on to be there for their friends and classmates offering unconditional support and reliability.

FLATIRONS/CHAPIN WRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Lucas Lee This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who shows qualities of leadership in the areas of athletics and academics and within the social fabric of the Aspen High School community. The Flatirons scholarship was established by Sue and Chuck Hall.

Chapin Wright was the recipient of the Flatirons Scholarship in 1972. Unfortunately, he was tragically killed in an automobile accident on his way to the senior party.

THE FUTURES FUND SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: George Morrison The Futures Fund, established in 2018, is a scholarship program founded by a diverse group of Aspen High School alumni who love and value the community that raised them.

The Futures Fund founders tribute their successes to the sacrifices made by parents, teachers, coaches, and community members who made it their mission to ensure a great education, safe neighborhoods, and countless opportunities to participate in sports.

THE GLAH FAMILY OPPORTUNITY AWARD Awarded to: Amy Amaya, Lynn Jara, Isabella Soria, Samuel Vesey This scholarship helps deserving students continue their education and pursue their passion in the college setting. The Glah scholarship is granted to students who have a vision and hope for the future and a planned path to achieve further education.

GUNILLA ISRAEL ASHER SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation Awarded to: Lynn Jara The Gunilla Israel Asher Scholarship was established to carry forward the legacy of the beautiful, brave, valiant warrior and former Aspen Times Publisher, Gunilla Asher, who lost her fight with cancer in 2014 after a lengthy and heroic battle. Gunilla was 42 years old. Gunilla loved all things Aspen, was the life of every party and the goodness behind so many selfless acts.

JASPER MOUNTAIN IDEAS & INVENTIONS SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Joshua Jacobs This award remembers Jasper who lost his precious life to cancer at the age of 24 years. He was funny and incredibly bright. Ideas and inventions flowed from Jasper like words from the lips of a poet.

The Ideas and Inventions Scholarship is a venue for students who might shy away from the limelight. It holds the promise of merging established ideas with the ideas of unfettered, untethered youth.

JEROME HATEM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation Awarded to: Christian Marenco The Jerome Hatem Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to help graduating Roaring Fork Valley high school rugby players attend a college, university, or vocational school.

Haley Rinaldi graduated from AHS in 2010 and is remembered as an exceptional soccer player. This scholarship is awarded to a senior female soccer player who has exhibited some of Haley’s great character and team player strengths both on and off the field.

The John Haines Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a strong work ethic, good citizenship and who will attend college in the state of Colorado.

ROBBIE WADE/UTE MOUNTAINEER ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Grace Petersen This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who shows respect for and an awareness of our natural world, including an awareness of current environmental issues and concerns.

This student lives out an environmental ethic, works to improve and sustain the natural world, and shows potential for applying his or her environmental sensitivities in the future.

SASHA’S SCHOLARSHIP FOR CREATIVE AND GENTLE SOULS Awarded to: Haiden Reece A 2004 graduate of Aspen High School, Sasha was a talented artist with a gentle and sensitive soul. He loved music, painting, street art, film, and literature and he used his creativity and imagination to envision a better world for all.

This scholarship in Sasha’s memory will support the dreams and aspirations of a student who is passionate about expressing themself through the arts, who possesses strong convictions and who advocates for themselves and others.

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER/LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Amy Amaya, Tyger Campisi, Kayla Tehrani The School Resource Officers of the Aspen School District created this scholarship to honor a student who has demonstrated a strong sense of ethics, solid character, high sense of

STUDENT LEADERSHIP/DAN VANDOMELEN SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Lucas Lee, Reece Leonard Each year, one male and one female Aspen High School senior are honored in memory of Dan VanDomelen. The recipients exhibit the traits that Dan embodied: determination and perseverance in pursuing personal goals, consistently striving for excellence, a commitment in meeting one’s responsibilities to others, strength of character, maturity, and stability. Recipients also demonstrate proper perspective and balance in displaying individual initiative and freedom, a love of life, and sense of humor in all situations.

TOM PEIRCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP at Aspen Community Foundation

C. WELTON ANDERSON FACULTY AWARDS C. Welton Anderson, a long time Aspen resident, was an architect, Chairman of the Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission and an Aspen Historical Society Trustee. He died at the age of 41 on December 11, 1991. The C. Welton Anderson awards are selected by the Aspen High School faculty and staff.

RISING STAR AWARD Awarded to: Garrett Greene, Cameron Hart, Jake Morgan, AJ Smith Students who have exhibited tremendous academic and personal growth over their four years at Aspen High School, who have the courage to try new things and the determination to tackle life’s challenges.

The Tom Peirce Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by the friends and family of the late Tom Peirce to help young people of exceptional promise develop their intellectual talents, sense of ethics, and powers of exploration.

Trashmasters International is one of the world’s most unique golf tournaments and is dedicated to presenting young men and women with the opportunity to realize their educational goals and dreams. Since 1993, 100% of the profits from the Trashmasters Golf Tournament have gone to scholarships throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Recipients of the four-year Trashmaster’s Scholarship demonstrate superior academic achievement while participating in extracurricular activities and volunteer work.

WILLIAM SANDERSEN VETERAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - an endowed scholarship fund at the Aspen Education Foundation Awarded to: Devon Thomas, Ansel Whitley The award is a memorial to the life of Aspen High School graduate William L. Sandersen, who died in combat in the service of the United States in the Vietnam War in August 1968. He was 24 years old. This scholarship, created in honor of veterans who have served and continue to serve our country, is awarded each year to deserving graduating seniors.

Students who display courage, dignity, freedom, individuality, self-determination, openmindedness, and who speak-out on what they care about.

LIFE-LONG LEARNER AWARD Awarded to: Calla Diemer, Cooper Kendrick, Lian Lilah, Anders Weiss, Claire Wolfer-Jenkins Students who possess an authentic love of learning both traditional and experiential and exemplify the school’s mission of educating the whole person.
