CONGRATS SKIERS! Tessa Guthrie, Editor-in-Chief The bleachers rattled as the class of 2021 gripped onto each other while cheering, “red, red, red, red, black, black, black, black, black!” The then sophomores overwhelmed the other grades with their intense enthusiasm for school spirit, which led them to beat the class of 2019 in the class cheer competition at the 2019 Homecoming pep rally. The class of 2021 reveled this victory, and it would foreshadow many other successes for our grade.
This year’s senior class demonstrated their ambition and passion all throughout high school. Many seniors were extremely academically successful, with the class of 2021 having the largest number of IB diploma students in AHS history. The seniors also strived for excellence in athletics, with many state championship wins and broken records throughout the years. Additionally, this senior class was a group of creatives and innovators, with many students transcending in the arts.
While the class of 2021 had a record of excellence, it did not come easily. The hardships from COVID-19 took a toll on the students, however, because of their strength and perseverance, the seniors were able to recover and flourish. The seniors made the most out of their small amount of school days and got creative with events that would create memories for the students. The seniors will fondly remember cheering out the windows of their cars during the car parade, coming together to watch the sunrise on the turf
before the first day of school, and laughing at old pictures while gluing them to the boat. This year’s seniors are going to do incredible things. The students have transformed into resilient individuals who will strive for excellence. Their successes will not stop in high school and neither will their friendships. These seniors will go off into the world with cherished memories of their time at Aspen High School and will truly change the world. Go Skiers!

One of the many unique things about AHS is the incredible teaching staff. The class of 2021 will miss their teachers very much, as they have made a huge impact on their lives. When asked to give a shoutout to a teacher that changed thier lives, the class of 2021 said the following things: Thanks to Marc Whitley for being the most engaging teacher I have ever had in both physics and astronomy- Gavin Heil I’d like to thank Maile LaPenna for helping me become the writer I am and being an amazing teacher during my Sophomore and Junior years.Kristen Spang Erica Nottingham ran the IB Music class for the 2019-20 school year. The class was supposed to be taught in 2 years, and we completed it in 7 months! On top of that, it was one of the most interesting classes I’ve ever taken! - Dan Jansen To Maile La Penna: Once, during my Sophomore year, I had written a tiny note in the margin of my final exam that read “I’m sad :( “to which you responded. I can’t remember exactly what you said, but your note was so heartwarming and kind that I’d never forgotten its sentiment. I think it’s unique to find a teacher who cares about their students to such an extent that they respond to a hidden note, even though it might have been written as a joke (it was not a joke in my case). - Stella Johanson I would like to thank Jennifer Morandibenson for being the best teacher I’ve ever had. I had never felt confident in history, and she made me realize that if I stay determined, I can become an expert at anything I want. - Macy Hopkinson Megan Noonan, the myth and the legend, is the queen of all queens, and I can’t say thank you enough for the experiences and lessons she gave me.Stef Wojcik Thanks to Josh Anderson for being the chillest & coolest teacher I’ve had!- Alec Martell At the end of the day, the type of impact you leave in the world matters most. With enough compassion and consideration, it can be a good one. Thank you for teaching me beyond the traditional curriculum, Denise Vetromile (and hoping we can hike the Bamboo Forest again soon)!- Emma Kuhn Thank you, Marc! You have always made me feel so welcome and appreciated at school. I adore your class, and I have been able to learn so much from you. I did not know if I could major in science, but thanks to you, I will be going to a science school.- Tilly Swanson Thank you, Sarah Ward, for teaching me the joys of journalism and helping me discover my passion! You’re the best teacher I’ve ever had! - Tessa Guthrie Sarah Ward has always been down-to-earth and very supportive of her students. She always goes the extra mile to help everyone with everything. Whenever someone is having a bad day, she finds a way to cheer them up. -Regan Mitchell I would like to thank Josh Anderson for being one of the best teachers I ever had. Josh didn’t only teach me math but also how to problem solve and collaborate with peers. I always found myself interested and engaged in what he was teaching, not because I’m super in love with math but because of how he engaged with his students and myself. Josh handled the COVID situation perfectly and came up with creative ways to continue to teach outside of just listening to lectures, which I was extremely grateful for. Josh sparked a passion for math and problem solving, and I don’t believe these passions would’ve come to light without him. Thank you, Josh. -Keaton Miller Mr. White was my third-grade teacher. He wrote a letter to me when I was in his class, I read the letter two or three years later. He was the first person in my life to pinpoint where I would end up years later. He always believed in me, motivated me, and most importantly, taught me how to flourish into a confident young girl. -Lupita Ortiz Timbah Bell: I remember when Timbah was a new teacher taking over a class. We were a brutal and mean class because we were young and rowdy. This resulted in several teacher aids being called in to help. That said, Timbah never missed a beat with coming into class with a smile. He listed to all of us and did his absolute best to teach through the madness. He has forever earned my respect for that. - Asher Fite I would like to thank Karen Hawkes from the Post-Secondary counseling department because she supported my college application process. I am truly grateful for the time and effort she put in. Thank you, Karen! - Kelsey Mchugh I would like to thank my theatre teacher Logan for everything she did for me over the last four years. I remember going to an audition for the spring musical for the first time, and she made me feel right at home and not nervous at all. Little did I know that the district theatre would be my home and acting be my comfort place. And that’s all because of my wonderful, yeah, her Logan.- Vitoria Sieders It is hard to choose just one teacher that has made a difference in my life while in high school. Sarah Ward sparked my love for psychology with her incredible teaching. Alexis White challenged me more than anyone else while also boosting my self-confidence, and of course, there is Megan Noonan. Megan was a big part of my high school experience both in the classroom and with my EE. She made one of the hardest classes so much fun. She truly cares about each and every one of her students, and I will miss her after graduation. - Hannah Yeary

It always makes me happier to see a smiling face in the hallways! I will miss you, Jane! - Grace Romero I give a shoutout to Brent for being awesome and teaching the coolest classes in the school. I love how he gets kids learning out of the classroom. -Meghann Smiddy Shoutout to Brent for being the dopest dude and making science enjoyable. Also thanks for the letter of rec, you a real one. -Diego Mendoza Shout out to Alexis White. My favorite memory with her was when we had Thanksgiving in her class and watched the Little Mermaid.- Amanda Simeone Thank you, Brent Maiolo, for cultivating the spirit of adventure in the hearts of the student body through Aspen Mtn Guide School and for being not only a teacher but a friend!- Kaelyn Kroger When I first moved to the ASD in 6th grade, I was placed into Ms. Mueller’s class. Realizing that I was new, she made sure to introduce me to as many kids as possible and include me in various class discussions that I might not have been a part of. I met some of my best friends in Ms. Mueller’s class thanks to her helping me branch out. - Emily Kinney Thank you to Chris Keleher, Travis Moore, and Kiffor Berg for great teachers, coaches, and mentors! You all helped me grow in both academics and athletics. - Kendall Clark I would like to give a shoutout to Sarah Ward! RESERVED OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Grace Romero A highly selective national merit-based scholarship through which students are awarded college tuition, textbooks, lab fees and housing stipends in exchange for a commitment of four years of active service after graduation as a military officer. In addition to the daily rigor of college, ROTC students participate in basic military training and officer training for their chosen branch of service. During the summer, ROTC students engage in specialized extended field training, leadership training, and internships. Each year, 14,000 high school seniors compete for 1,000 four-year Army ROTC scholarships. The scholarship Grace is receiving at Duke University is estimated to be the full $300,000.

WESTERN GOLF ASSOCIATION CHICK EVANS SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to: John “Jake” Doyle The Chick Evans Scholarship for caddies was started by legendary amateur golfer Charles “Chick’’ Evans Jr. He learned the game as a caddie, won the 1910 Western Open and gained worldwide fame in 1916, when he became the first to win the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open in the same year. Evans insisted on preserving his amateur status, and any money he received from golf was put toward caddie scholarships. The first two Evans Scholars enrolled at Northwestern University in 1930. Since then, more than 11,050 men and women have graduated from college as Evans Scholars, and 1,010 are currently in school. The Western Golf Association, founded in 1899, has supported the Evans Scholarship since its inception. The Chick Evans Scholarship for caddies is a grant that covers full tuition and housing in an Evans Scholarship House and may be renewed for up to four years. STATE RECOGNITIONS

This scholarship helps promising and principled students access a college education. Academic promise and involvement in extracurricular activities and volunteer work are strongly considered in awarding this scholarship. Scholarship awards have increased in recent years due to the untimely death of one of the founders and an ardent supporter of the scholarship fund, Rick Griffin, and the memorial contributions made in his loving memory.
ASPEN CANCER CONFERENCE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Jack Blocker, Matilda Swanson The Aspen Cancer Conference brings a group of leading scientists with expertise in a variety of disciplines representing academia, government, and industry to Aspen annually to explore the cause, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The conference collaborates with Aspen High School to bring world class scientists to meet with AHS science students and faculty to discuss advances in science and career choices in science and medicine.

ASPEN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT: DOUGLAS PUMPELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Lars Pomeroy Doug Pumpelly was an elected Chief of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department. He was a generous man with a huge heart who grew up in Aspen and worked as a skilled auto mechanic. This scholarship, originally created in 1995, is awarded to a student who is interested primarily in a two-year college degree in order to pursue a career in a vocational/ technical field or in the fire service.
WILLARD CLAPPER SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Arlet Campuzano, Katelyn O’Callahan, Aja Schiller Willard Clapper was the former Aspen Volunteer Fire Department Chief and a volunteer firefighter for 35 years. Willard was a native Aspenite and a very beloved teacher in the Aspen Elementary and Middle Schools for decades. He firmly believed in the value of their Outdoor Education Program. He had a brilliant sense of humor and was a powerful positive influence in our community.

The Aspen Rotary Club has been awarding scholarships to Aspen’s seniors since 1987. The scholarship is awarded to students based on school and community involvement, academic potential, and the Rotary’s motto, “Others Above Self”.
The Buddy Program envisions a thriving community in which all members are supported and connected through meaningful relationships and experiences. The Buddy Program’s Continuing Education Scholarship Committee selects recipients based on the quality, length, and level of their involvement in its programs, their need, and their academic merit. HODGSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Kylie Kenny This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who shows qualities of leadership in the areas of athletics and academics and within the social fabric of the Aspen High School community. The Flatirons scholarship was established by Sue and Chuck Hall. Chapin Wright was the recipient of the Flatirons Scholarship in 1972. Unfortunately, he was tragically killed in an automobile accident on his way to the senior party.
THE FUTURES FUND SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Kendall Clark The Futures Fund, established in 2018, is a scholarship program founded by a diverse group of Aspen High School alumni who love and value the community that raised them. The Futures Fund founders tribute their successes to the sacrifices made by parents, teachers, coaches, and community members who made it their mission to ensure a great education, safe neighborhoods, and countless opportunities to participate in sports. The only way the founders know to repay their debt of gratitude is to continue down the path laid before them. The Futures Fund, therefore, is about honoring those who came before and by helping those who will come after. The Futures Fund is now welcoming other AHS alumni and members of the Aspen community to join their cause and donate for the 2022 scholarship. Gunilla was 42 years old. Gunilla loved all things Aspen, was the life of every party and the goodness behind so many selfless acts.

in 2010 and is remembered as an exceptional soccer player. This scholarship is awarded to a senior female soccer player who has exhibited some of Haley’s great character and team player strengths both on and off the field.
Awarded to: Samantha Gonzales Pat Hodgson was a long-time librarian at Aspen High School. She died in 2002, and her family established the Patricia H. Hodgson Scholarship in her memory. Awarded to: Alexander Martin This award remembers Jasper who lost his precious life to cancer at the age of 24 years. He was funny and incredibly bright. Ideas and inventions flowed from Jasper like words from the lips of a poet. The Ideas and Inventions Scholarship is a venue for students who might shy away from the limelight. It holds the promise of merging established ideas with the ideas of unfettered, untethered youth.
JOE HIGH SCHOLARSHIP - sponsored by the Aspen Elks Lodge Awarded to: Sofie Durham Joe High dedicated his life to helping people. He was the Patient Advocate at Aspen Valley Hospital, worked with the homeless, and really focused on doing good in this world. For many years, Joe headed up the Elk’s Scholarship Committee. Joe died in January of this year. The Aspen Elks Lodge honors Joe’s memory with this award. JOHN HAINES OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Regan Mitchell The John Haines Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a strong work ethic, good citizenship and who will attend college in the state of Colorado.
LES DAMES D’ASPEN SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Jeremy Martin Founded in 1983, Les Dames d’Aspen contributes to local arts organizations and to a college scholarship for an Aspen High School graduating senior. The scholarship is awarded to a student who displays great character and a commitment to further study of the arts, particularly performing arts.
PITKIN COUNTY HEALTHY RIVERS SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Eva McDonough This scholarship is awarded each year to a student who demonstrates an interest in furthering the mission of the Pitkin County Healthy Rivers Board to protect, defend, and enhance the rivers of the Roaring Fork Watershed.
POPPYCOCK’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Caden Klein, Spencer Perley, Carolina Robinson, Aja Schiller Bee Wong and Paul Poh, Aspen parents and owners of Poppycock’s Café, award scholarships to support students who have earned the respect of the faculty and their peers and who are a credit to themselves, their family, the school, and the community. Poppycock’s is able to offer two additional scholarships this year thanks to the legendary generosity of Lenny “Boogie” Weinglass who has donated millions to his many charities and foundations, but who has also quietly helped so many individuals, families and businesses in times of need. Poppycock’s Cafe is paying forward the support Weinglass provided for local restaurants during the Covid 19 shut down.
ROBBIE WADE/UTE MOUNTAINEER ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Eva McDonough This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who shows respect for and an awareness of our natural world, including an awareness of current environmental issues and concerns. This student lives out an environmental ethic, works to improve and sustain the natural world, and shows potential for applying his or her environmental sensitivities in the future.

SNOWMASS VILLAGE COMMUNITY OUTREACH FUND SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to: Katelyn O’Callahan The Snowmass Village Community Outreach Fund, with great assistance from the Alpine Bank, Snowmass Branch, was established 26 years ago to assist people in need who live, work or participate in activities in Snowmass Village. Many fundraisers and grants provide our organization the opportunity to assist others. The board is made up completely of volunteers and has no administrative overhead in order to maximize the value of each dollar donated.

Since 1993, 100% of the profits from the Trashmasters Golf Tournament have gone to scholarships throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Recipients of the four-year Trashmaster’s Scholarship demonstrate superior academic achievement while participating in extracurricular activities and volunteer work.

The award is a memorial to the life of Aspen High School graduate William L. Sandersen, who died in combat in the service of the United States in the Vietnam War in August 1968. He was 24 years old. This scholarship, created in honor of veterans who have served and continue to serve our country, is awarded each year to deserving graduating seniors.

C. WELTON ANDERSON FACULTY AWARDS C. Welton Anderson, a long time Aspen resident, was an architect, Chairman of the Aspen Planning and Zoning Commission and an Aspen Historical Society Trustee.
