Elise C. Britt ’09 / Field Hockey 2020 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Elise Britt’s exceptional athleticism and leadership skills were matched by her legendary “never quit” attitude. She racked up 22 goals her senior year to lead the Liberty League in scoring — with a cast on one hand.

As team captain (2008, 2009), Britt led the Thoroughbreds to two Liberty League titles and four National Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2009. An All American in 2009, she was selected All Region First Team (2009), Liberty League First Team (2008-09) and Liberty League All Tournament (2008). In 2009, Britt earned Tournament MVP honors after scoring all three goals in a 3-2 overtime championship win.

The exercise science major was a consistent member of the Thoroughbred Society, setting the standard for academic excellence. “Elise would go out of her way to help anyone and seemed to work harder than the rest of us,” recalls teammate and 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Christine Kemp ’11.

According to Coach Beth Hallenbeck, Britt’s unparalleled work ethic was never more evident than in her senior campaign. “Elise endured an injury that would have been a season-ender for most athletes, yet found a way to make ‘the impossible possible.’ A week post-surgery, she was back on the field scoring goals with a cast molded to her stick. Resourceful, relentless and devoted to her teammates, Elise managed to have her best season under the most adverse circumstances.”

NICHOLAS S. DUPUIS ’12 / MEN’S ICE Hockey 2020 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Men’s Ice Hockey star Nick Dupuis set program firsts and racked up a dazzling roster of regional and national honors.

Team scoring leader in 2009-10, he was second top scorer in the 2011-12 season. Dupuis remains the third ranked defenseman in Thoroughbred history, with a career record of 23 goals, 53 assists and 76 points.

He led the Thoroughbreds to three Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference East semi-final appearances (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12).

A Skidmore Invitational All-Tournament Team member in 2009, Dupuis was All ECAC East First Team in 2010-11. He earned ECAC Men’s East Player of the Week in 2010 and was selected All ECAC East First Team in 2011-12.

The first All-American in Men’s Ice Hockey history, he was named a Third Team All-American in the 2011-12 season.

Dupuis also distinguished himself in the classroom as a consistent member of Skidmore’s Thoroughbred Society — he earned ECAC Men’s East All Academic honors in 2009-10.

Dupuis went on to play professionally and helped the Pensacola Ice Flyers win the Southern Professional Hockey League Championship in 2012-13.

MARK D. GREEN ’96 / MEN’S TENNIS 2020 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

One of the most talented student-athletes in the history of Men’s Tennis, Mark Green competed against and defeated some of the top collegiate players in the country. His ground-breaking achievements helped establish Skidmore’s Men’s Tennis as a formidable national competitor that set high standards for both athleticism and academics.

A four-year starter, Green played #1 singles his sophomore and senior years, as well as a majority of his junior year. An Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association First Team selection, he was also ranked top eastern regional player in singles and doubles (1995, 1996). Among Green’s most memorable victories is his 1995 defeat of Chris Pearson, then ninth-ranked collegiate player in the U.S. and the previous year’s winner of the East Regional Rolex singles title.

An inspirational team captain (1995, 1996), Green modeled leadership both on and off the court, recalls Coach Paul Arciero.

“In many ways, he served as a ‘student assistant coach.’ Much of the success we experienced as a team was due to Mark’s work with players outside of practice.”

Green made program history as the first Thoroughbred to be named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Academic All Scholar Athlete, an honor he earned twice (1995, 1996). Recipient of Skidmore’s Positive Mental Attitude Award in 1994, he was recognized with the Senior Scholar Athlete Award in 1996.

Powered by her competitive spirit, extraordinary talent, and unyielding resolve, Nataly Mendoza became one of the nation’s preeminent collegiate tennis players. A three-time All American (2012 doubles, 2013 doubles/singles), she is an eight-time All Liberty League First Team selection (singles/doubles 2010-2013).

Named League Rookie of the Year in 2010 and Player of the Year in 2013, she received Skidmore’s Senior Athlete Award.

Mendoza was ranked as high as #6 in doubles after finishing fourth at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association fall nationals (Oracle Cup) her junior year. Part of the first Thoroughbred pair to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship since 2001, she finished 2012 with #17 national ranking in doubles. Mendoza concluded her collegiate career as the #17 ranked singles player and #8 ranked doubles player in the U.S. When she qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship in 2013, she became one of just four Thoroughbreds to compete in the NCAA individual championships and capture All American honors in both singles and doubles. Team captain for two seasons (2012, 2013), Mendoza led the Thoroughbreds to three consecutive league titles and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the third round in 2013. Her leadership was instrumental in elevating Thoroughbred Women’s Tennis from a national ranking of #30 in 2010 to #16 in the U.S. in 2013.

“Nataly helped set very high standards that define the program to this day,” observes Coach Curt Speerschneider. “She embodied resolve and perseverance. I don’t think she ever lost to an opponent twice. Because she learned from her mistakes, Nataly improved each year and allowed the program to improve with her. She was a true leader in every sense of the word.”

A legendary figure in the equestrian world, Cindy Ford is widely known as “the architect” of Skidmore Riding, one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the nation.

As director of riding and head coach for over three decades, Ford guided the Thoroughbreds to seven national titles (1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2010, 2013, and 2018) and four reserve national titles. She coached numerous individual champions, including Cacchione Cup winners Lindsay Phibbs ’02 and Ashley Woodhouse ’07.

Ford’s 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2010 teams, along with rider Courtney Phibbs ’97, have also been inducted into the Skidmore Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2011, the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association honored Ford with its Lifetime Achievement Award. She continues to be the most successful coach in IHSA history.

A beloved mentor to hundreds of riders, Ford prepared them to excel in far more than equestrian sports. “They leave here as different people—responsible, confident and independent,” she has said. Her personal commitment to the Skidmore community has also been extraordinary. Co-founder of the Skidmore College Saratoga Classic Horse Show, she helped developed the popular event into a high profile scholarship fundraiser.

Assistant VP for Student Affairs & Director of Athletics Gail Cummings-Danson observes, “Cindy always placed the needs of her student-athletes and the program before her own. Her leadership and mentoring skills are forever the example we all strive to achieve.”

2015 women’s basketball / team 2020 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

By clinching the Thoroughbred’s first Liberty League Championship and National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament bid, this dynamic and versatile team transformed Women’s Basketball into a regional superstar and nationally competitive force.

In a historic 17-10 season, the Skidmore women defeated top-seeded St. Lawrence for the third time in a double overtime championship thriller 67-62. The Thoroughbreds ranked third in NCAA Division III in defensive rebounds per game (33), 17th in 3-point field goal defense (24.3%) and 21st in field-goal percentage defense (32.6%).

Angela Botiba (1st Team All-Conference) led the team in scoring, (13.7 ppg), rebounds per game (10.4) and blocked shots per game (1.7). Molly McLaughlin (2nd Team All-Conference; Conference Tournament MVP) led the conference with 4.9 assists per game.

Kelly Donnelly (2015 Liberty League Rookie of the Year) was team leader in steals per game (1.4) and second in scoring (10.1 ppg).

By capturing the program’s first Liberty League title, this powerhouse team reversed an 11-year title drought, un-seating longtime league champion Vassar. The Thorough-breds inaugurated a new era in Women’s Tennis; with nine consecutive titles and running, Skidmore has domi-nated the league ever since. The team finished in the National Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 25, elevating Skidmore’s Women’s Tennis to the national stage for the first time in over a decade.

The Thoroughbreds produced Liberty League Player of the Year (Rachel Loeb), Rookie of the Year (Melissa Hirsch), and Coaching Staff of the Year (Curt Speerschneider and Kim Westcott).

They vanquished two national top-30 opponents and NCAA Division I foe SUNY Albany, advancing to second round play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship.
