Eugene Drucker and Diane Walsh perform Strauss and Bartók. Despite the Northeast blackout on August 14, the festival continues with a full evening of music by candlelight. A Hindemith sonata, initially cut from the program, is performed as an encore by Kazi Pitelka and Andrew Russo due to audience demand. Russo also headlines an evening of Bach clavier concertos. Members of La Fenice premiere Fred Lerdahl’s Quartet for Oboe and Strings with the composer in attendance. Diane Walsh performs as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, conducted by Guillermo Figueroa, and joins violinist Hilary Hahn for two Mozart sonatas. For the season finale, Hahn performs Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 under conductor Peter Bay. The festival also releases its third highlights CD, Chamber Music by the Lake, Volume III.
