W
ithout volunteers, the Tulip Festival just wouldn’t work, said Betsy Nevi, staff assistant with the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. With an estimated 25,000 visitors coming through the Tulip Festival’s office during April, volunteers are necessary to keep everything running in the storefront in downtown Mount Vernon. “If you walk in the door, you want to know where the tulip fields are,” Nevi said. Volunteers clue visitors in to what’s going on and what there is to do, and give lots of directions. “We joke that you have to learn to draw upside down,” she said of marking routes on visitors’ maps. Besides those maps, the office had a map of its own, marking where everyone was coming from. “We’ve had them from all over the world,” she said. Besides volunteers giving out directions and keeping everything

running smoothly, Kiwanis volunteers keep tulip peepers’ stomachs filled during their volunteer-run salmon barbecue. The barbecue has been going on for 59 years, and has been offering its fish fare at the festival for the past 25 years. “It’s not quite like a job, but it’s pretty close,” said Tony Flynn, co-chair of the barbecue event and on the Tulip Festival board. “You often get the same rewards and frustrations as you’d get with any other endeavor.” He volunteers to give back, he said, as his life has benefitted from others volunteering before him. They serve festival goers wildcaught salmon and locally grown baked potatoes and coleslaw. “They basically run a restaurant for 23 days with only volunteer labor,” said Cindy Verge, executive director of the festival. Flynn described a typical day as akin to “herding cats.” The volunteers have to have all the pieces put together every day to run an event that

There are rewards, the immediate being the compliments one gets from diners, many of whom are from out of town. “They can go to Anthony’s Home Port, but it’s just not the same,” he said. The rewards beyond that are tremendous. The funds help community organizations, local youth with scholarships, and Flynn’s list goes on. Like the broad demographics, which include retirees and high school students alike, volunteers donate their time for a wide variety of reasons. Like Flynn, some may just want to give back. For others who are new to the area, Nevi said, it’s a way to meet people and get to know the Skagit Valley. It sounded like fun, others have told her. Whatever the reason, the organizers of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival are grateful. “It sounds trite,” Verge said. “But we could not do the festival without volunteers.”

T
he Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon hosts a salmon barbecue nearly every day throughout the Tulip Festival, raising money for both local, national and international causes that help children. The locally caught wild silver salmon is purchased from the Swinomish Tribe and grilled over smokey alder wood. The barbecue runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 31 to April 22, including Easter Sunday. It takes place at Hillcrest Park with both indoor and outdoor seating options. The Hillcrest Lodge, built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps offers a “warm

and cozy” atmosphere “with a lot of history,” said Tony Flynn, co-chair of the Kiwanis Club. The cost for lunch or dinner is $12 and includes salmon, a baked potato, garlic bread, coleslaw, a beverage and an ice cream bar. All of the profits go to charity, chiefly scholarships for college and trade schools. In past years, the barbecue has raised $160,000 during the festival. “And all that goes right back into the community,” Flynn said. The club serves an average of three tons of salmon, one ton of coleslaw, a 55-gallon drum of tartar sauce, 750 loaves of garlic bread and 9,000 ice cream bars. The Kiwanis have been hosting the annual barbecue for the past 59 years. It began at the Skagit County Fairgrounds, then later moved to Hillcrest Park. It has been associated with the Tulip Festival for the past

25 years. In recent years, the barbecue has helped fund a new park on 18th Street (named after the club), and has provided benefits to tsunami victims in Japan, an orphanage in Ghana and the Friendship House homeless shelter and the dental van, among other community charities. “It’s all focused towards kids and youth,” Flynn said. Other Kiwanis clubs in the area, as well as other volunteer groups, help prepare and serve the meals. Cooks include notable local professionals including Skagit County Sheriff Will Reichardt, former Sheriff Rick Grimstead and retired businessman Jim Grenz. Former longtime manager at Safeway Jerry Jewett has manned the cash register for years and is known to work 60-hour weeks volunteering at the barbecue.

ncompassing far more than flowers, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival provides fertile ground for many exciting and diverse events throughout Skagit Valley. Here are just a few: WOODFEST: If you get revved up for chainsaw carvings or turned on by the lathe, check out Woodfest, March 31 though April 1 at SedroWoolley High School. Professional wood workers will have hand-made items up for sale, student woodworking projects will be on display, and a silent auction and raffle will be held for finely crafted wooden items. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County will be putting on activities for children. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 31 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 1. dark recesses of the garage, they come. Puzzles, snowboards, bikes, and action figures, gathered by young entrepreneurs looking for some cash, go up for sale at the Kid’s Giant Garage Sale. Christi Kinney, recreation coordinator of Burlington Parks and Recreation Department, said the garage sale is a great way for kids under age 18 to earn a little spending money of their own. The young ones price items, pitch sales and handle money themselves, giving them an introduction to business as well. The sale will be held on April 14, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Burlington Parks and Rec Center, 900 Fairhaven Ave., in Burlington. Great prices and lots of fun will be found, so be sure to get there early. Admission is free, and vendors can secure a table for $10. The 31st Annual Tulip Pedal will be hitting the road April 21, offering 20-, 40- and 60-mile rides
up the coast starting at La Conner Middle School. This event is the sole benefactor of Safe Kids Skagit County, which works to prevent accidental injury in children. PLANT AND GARDEN TOOL SWAP MEET: Earth Day seems the perfect time to grab a new shovel, pick up some interesting plant starts and get back to gardening. The Plant and Garden Tool Swap Meet, held April 22, is a chance to buy, sell and trade seedlings, starts and gardening tools, as well as swap secrets with local growers. The meet will be held in the Burlington City Hall parking lot, 833 S. Spruce St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors can rent a parking space for $20.
