estled in the heart of Central Washington, Kittitas County is where adventure begins, memories are made, and discovery awaits at every turn. With wide-open skies, dramatic landscapes, and a collection of small towns brimming with character, this region is quickly gaining a reputation as a hub for outdoor recreation, culinary exploration, and craft beverage enthusiasts. The journey often begins in Ellensburg, the county seat and cultural core. This charming college town has roots stretching back to the 19th century when it was a bustling stop on the way to the goldfields. Today, its historic downtown is a haven for art lovers, shoppers, and foodies, with restored brick buildings housing everything from contemporary galleries to farm-forward eateries. Central Washington University breathes youthful energy into the 8

town, contributing year-round events and performances that liven the community. But Ellensburg isn’t just about academia and arts— it’s also an ideal basecamp for venturing into the wild landscapes that surround it. Head west along I-90 and you’ll find yourself in Cle Elum, a former coal mining town transformed into a recreation magnet. Tucked beneath the Cascade foothills, it offers easy access to mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, and river sports. The nearby Teanaway Community Forest and Cle Elum Lake make this area a nature lover’s dream. Cle Elum has also seen an uptick in culinary creativity and is evolving into a dining destination all its own, drawing chefs and entrepreneurs who find inspiration in the area’s rugged charm. Across the river lines the community of South Cle Elum. South Cle Elum grew around a bustling depot, roundhouse, and rail yard—becoming a vital hub for train crews and travelers for more than six decades. Today, visitors can explore this rich railroad heritage through interpretive trails and preserved historic sites. Just a few miles north lies Roslyn, a town that feels like a step back in time. Famously used as the filming location for the cult classic TV show Northern Exposure, Roslyn retains its quirky appeal with historic saloons, a coal-mining museum, and an eclectic

mix of shops. The town’s calendar is dotted with festivals and markets that celebrate both its pioneer heritage and its vibrant community spirit. Outdoor lovers use Roslyn as a launchpad for trails that wind through alpine forests and lead to panoramic vistas. To the east, the City of Kittitas offers a quieter, rural experience and a deep sense of place. Agriculture has long been its backbone, and today, the surrounding farmlands are part of a growing agri-tourism movement. Visitors can explore roadside produce stands, local markets, and even plan visits to working farms. The city’s proximity to the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail makes it a hidden gem for cyclists and rail-trail explorers. In Thorp, blink and you might miss it—but that would be a mistake. This tiny hamlet punches above its weight when it comes to fruit stands, antique treasures, and access to scenic drives. It embodies the essence of slow travel and is a beloved detour for those seeking something off the beaten path. While in Easton, stop in at Lake Easton State Park for a picnic with gorgeous views of the lake. Cap of your afternoon with a hike around the lake enjoying the wide trails and gorgeous vistas.

Beyond its individual towns, Kittitas County as a whole is on the cusp of becoming a must-visit destination in Washington State. Its natural assets are gaining recognition among outdoor enthusiasts, from fly fishers and backcountry hikers to snowmobilers and horseback riders. Just a short drive from the heart of Kittitas County, Snoqualmie Pass offers the ultimate winter escape. With four designated ski areas it’s a go-to destination for downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and Nordic trails. Whether you’re a seasoned snow enthusiast or trying out snow play for the first time, this area delivers fun for all ages—plus stunning views of the Cascade Mountains. Simultaneously, the area’s food and beverage scene is blossoming. Small-batch breweries and taprooms are drawing in the craft beer crowd, while boutique wineries and tasting rooms are putting the county on the map for wine lovers seeking alternatives to the busier westside wine trails. Whether you’re here to explore historic landmarks, hike among the evergreens, sip your way through a flight of local reds, or simply soak up the small-town ambiance, one thing is certain: in Kittitas County, your adventure truly starts here. Turn right onto Miller Road and follow it to the junction with Robinson Canyon Road, where Miller changes to Cove Road. Follow Cove Road to the junction with Manastash Road and turn right and follow Manastash Road to the end of the pavement. Continue on Forest Road 3100 to spur road 114 and follow it to the trailhead.

estled in the heart of Washington state, Kittitas County offers a diverse range of habitats that are home to an incredible array of wildlife. From the rugged alpine landscapes of the east Cascades to the winding rivers and shrub-steppe habitats, there’s something for every nature enthusiast to explore and discover. Whether you’re an avid hiker, birder, photographer, or simply enjoy immersing yourself in the great outdoors, Kittitas County provides endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and appreciation.

WHERE TO GO: 1. Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest: Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest spans thousands of acres in Kittitas County. North of Cle Elum along the Cle Elum River, visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the east Cascades. Towering firs and spruce trees provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, black bear, Douglas squirrel, and chipmunks. Birdwatchers will delight in sightings of Steller’s jay, brown creeper, red-naped sapsucker, black swift, and chestnut-backed chickadee. 18

Teanaway Community Forest: Just a short drive east of Cle Elum lies the Teanaway Community Forest, co-managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. This expansive forest offers 50,000 acres of diverse habitats, from lush riparian corridors to ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forests. Hiking along the Teanaway River and upland meadows provides excellent opportunities to encounter wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and the elusive cougar. 3. Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway: Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the Yakima River Canyon offers breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. Explore the basalt cliffs and shrub-steppe habitats accessible from several camping and day-use areas. Keep an eye out for bald eagles nesting along the Yakima River, and watch for bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyote, and Townsend’s ground squirrel. These trails span every difficulty level and offer a hands-on way to experience Central Washington’s diverse landscapes. To make your hiking trip even more memorable, each of the following options includes trailhead directions, pass requirements, gear suggestions, seasonal tips, wildlife sightings, and post-hike ideas. EASY & FAMILY-FRIENDLY HIKES Coal Mines Trail – Cle Elum to Roslyn This flat, gravel rail-trail connects the historic towns of Cle Elum, Roslyn, and Ronald, passing remnants of the region’s rich coal-mining heritage. You’ll spot interpretive signs, old mine entrances, and even the original powder storage site along the way. The trail is accessible year-round and open to walkers, cyclists, horses, cross-country skiers, and snowmobiles in winter. Trailhead & Parking: Park at the Cle Elum Trailhead at Pennsylvania Ave. & 1st St. Pass: None required. Bring: Water, snacks, sun protection, layers.

Wildlife: Expect birds, deer, and squirrels. Cell Coverage: Strong throughout. Best Season: Spring through fall; beautiful in autumn. Post-Hike Tip: Refuel in Roslyn with a coffee or sandwich, then explore the Roslyn Museum or local shops. Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park – Vantage Explore a prehistoric forest frozen in time. MODERATE HIKES Forest Discovery Trail – Blewett Pass This peaceful 3-mile loop near the summit of Blewett Pass features interpretive signs, old-growth trees, and scenic forest views. Great for families with older kids or adults looking for a relaxing yet immersive experience. Trailhead & Parking: Off Hwy 97 near Blewett Pass summit; look for signs and parking pullout. Pass: Northwest Forest Pass required. Bring: Layers, snacks, camera, and bug spray. Wildlife: Chipmunks, woodpeckers, and occasional elk. Cell Coverage: Weak to none. Best Season: Summer and fall; accessible by snowshoe in winter. Post-Hike Tip: Head to Cle Elum for a hearty lunch or stretch your drive with a stop at Thorp Fruit & Antique Mall. Umtanum Falls – Ellensburg This short and scenic 1-mile (one way) trail ends at a 40-foot waterfall cascading into a basalt bowl. It’s relatively flat but can be slick in spots—wear good shoes, especially in winter when it ices over. Trailhead & Parking: From I-90 Exit 109 in Ellensburg, follow Umptanum Rd for 10 miles. Cooper River Trail – Salmon La Sac This moderate 4.5-mile roundtrip trail follows the Cooper River upstream to the peaceful shores of Cooper Lake. There’s great shade, wildflowers, and berry-picking in late summer. Trailhead & Parking: From Roslyn, drive north to Salmon La Sac Campground and follow signs. Pass: Northwest Forest Pass required. Bring: Layers, water, and bug spray. Wildlife: Black bears (rare), eagles, trout.

The trails vary in grade and length—some loops are perfect for short hikes, others can be extended for longer outings. Trailhead & Parking: Begin near the Coal Mines Trail in Roslyn; maps available online or at Basecamp Books and Bites. Pass: None required. Bring: Navigation tools, water, and sturdy footwear. STRENUOUS HIKES Manastash Ridge – Ellensburg A challenging but rewarding climb up the hills southwest of Ellensburg, with wildflowers in spring and sweeping views of the valley below. Several routes exist, including the popular Westberg Trail and more rugged Boy Scout Trail. Logbook at the summit. Trailhead & Parking: From I-90 East, exit 101. Turn right on Thorp Hwy, then right on Cove Rd. Parking lot is on the right after the second stop sign. Pass: None required. Bring: Water, layers, sunblock. Wildlife: Hawks, deer, marmots. WHERE THE WATER RUNS WILD Exploring the Waterways of KITTITAS COUNTY

n Kittitas County, water carves the story. From glacial-fed rivers rushing through rugged canyons to tranquil lakes nestled beneath the Cascades, this Central Washington landscape flows with adventure, tradition, and renewal. Whether you’re here to cast a line, paddle a kayak, or simply unwind beside a scenic shore, the waterways of Kittitas County offer a natural escape worth lingering in. At the heart of it all is the Yakima River, one of the most celebrated blue-ribbon trout streams in the Western United States. Winding from the high Cascades near Easton through the arid, sun-drenched Yakima Canyon, this river is world-renowned for fly fishing, drawing anglers from across the globe with its healthy rainbow and cutthroat trout populations. But fishing is only the beginning—its winding path offers prime access for floating, rafting, kayaking, and wildlife watching. Bald eagles, river otters, and herons are common companions along the waterway, particularly near Umtanum and Big Pines recreation areas. Branching off the Yakima River are numerous tributaries and spring-fed creeks that fuel both ecosystems and recreation. Umtanum Creek, for example, flows through a dramatic canyon where hikers, birders, and families find a quiet wilderness retreat. Manastash and Taneum Creeks also weave through the hills west of Ellensburg, offering shaded, less-traveled havens ideal for streamside picnics, low-key fishing, and exploration. To the northwest, Cooper Lake and Lake Cle Elum shine like alpine jewels in the upper county. These glaciercarved lakes near Roslyn and Salmon La Sac are known for their clear, cool waters and excellent opportunities for swimming, canoeing, paddleboarding, and camping. Lake Cle Elum also supports motorized boating and provides direct access to backcountry trails. Mattoon Lake, just outside Ellensburg, and Lavender Lake, near Snoqualmie Pass, are popular local fishing spots, especially for beginners or families. For visitors strolling down historic downtown Roslyn, this charming wine shop is a great place for conversation and connection. The name “The Wine Collaborative” wasn’t just clever branding—it was born when three wineries came together to create a red blend they called The Collaboration. “We’re three small wineries in Eastern Washington, and we do what wineries do – we help each other out, it’s one of those community types of businesses,” J.J. from Naratif

Winery explains. That spirit of togetherness sparked the idea for a shared space that wasn’t your average tasting room. “We’re a collaborative wine shop, not a tasting room,” co-founder Kelly Hightower emphasizes. “That means you’re walking into a place where three wineries have come together, not only to sell wine, but to share a bigger story.”

MEET THE MAKERS The Wine Collaborative is the joint effort of three distinct Washington wineries: • Hightower Cellars from Red Mountain, owned by Tim and Kelly Hightower, known for their red wines. • WIT Cellars from the Prosser, founded by Gina, Cat, and Flint— the name WIT stands for “We’re In it Together,” a nod to their own collaboration. • Naratif Winery, from Yakima Valley, owned by J.J.
