FLORENCE, Italy — My mom can’t take a good picture. It’s not that she needs time to adjust the lighting or find a better angle. It doesn’t get better after the 10th try.

But her terrible shots didn’t matter on our mother-daughter trip to Italy.

Neither did her aversion to stairs, her preference for taxis over public transport or the fact that wine isn’t part of her lifestyle like it is mine and most Italians.

Travel is our passion. So are history, museums and conversation over a good meal, making Florence, Milan and the Tuscan countryside ideal destinations for a trip to celebrate her 70th year.

Here are dos and don’ts if you’re considering a trip with older relatives or anyone who doesn’t know their way around a smartphone camera.

FLORENCE Do: Find a quality hotel with a patient concierge to handle a barrage of questions about where to go and what to do. Enjoy the change if you’re an active traveler who typically charges out to discover. Grab a gelato and slow down.

Don’t: Push your non-photo-taker to go to four museums in one day.

Even if you fear missing something, it’s too much to hit the Accademia for Michelangelo’s David, San Marco church and museum, the Palazzo Vecchio and the famed Uffizi Gallery in such a short span.

Do: See those landmarks, at a more leisurely pace, including lesser-visited San Marco. Poke your head into a long series of tiny monks’ rooms to glimpse religious frescoes. Note the level of detail in the veins in David’s hands.

Ask your hotel to make early-morning reservations to get some quiet time with the statue before tour groups and artists arrive. The Palazzo Vecchio deserves more time than we had, with its foundation of Roman ruins and palatial rooms, though I did climb its tower for incredible city views.

Don’t: Try to do the Uffizi on your own. The museum is massive (with lines to match). A guide can direct

you to the must-sees: Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and Michelangelo’s only surviving painting. Make reservations for other top sights, including the Duomo complex, to avoid lines.

Do: Focus on food. That’s easy to do in Italy, where wine is like water and pasta choices are endless. Between restaurants, encourage parents to try the Mercato Centrale, packed with food stalls on the first floor and a diverse food court upstairs.

Don’t: Forget to simply enjoy the city. Relax in open-air cafes with an aperol spritz between sightseeing.

Most places provide snacks with alcohol, so dig in to those olives and reflect on the beauty you’ve seen.

Then take a cab to the Piazza Michelangelo and bask in some of Florence’s best views.

TUSCAN COUNTRYSIDE Do: Book a private tour through the famous northern wine region of Chianti and the southern Orcia Valley with its distinctive rolling hills filled with red poppies and medieval villages. It won’t be cheap, but it might be your parents’ favorite part of the trip. Our guide shuttled us to a family-run winery atop a hill in Chianti, the competition-ranked world’s best gelato shop in San Gimignano and tucked-away castles. The next day, we went south to explore the square of Montepulciano and taste wine and pecorino cheese in Pienza.

Don’t: Expect to get around easily.

You need a car to get to those charm-

ing villages and the desire to navigate the serpentine roads. We stayed in a villa outside Siena, with a terrace to play cards by the late-setting sun, but we were still 20 minutes from the heart of the medieval town and its restaurants and shops.

Do: Explore Siena. It’s worth spending a day or two trudging through the hilly city center. This was a slight problem for my mom, who doesn’t do well walking uphill, but the Piazza del Campo provides a perfect pit stop after exploring the ornate Duomo, with its black-striped pillars and works

by Donatello and Michelangelo. The bowl-shaped square splays out downhill, attracting picnickers, tourists and groups of teens.

MILAN Don’t: Wait too long to book reservations for “The Last Supper” because tour groups buy out tickets online.

Even a month and a half before our trip, all that was left was a six-hour walking tour.

Do: Explore the city on your own when your parents want to rest. I beelined up the main pedestrian street, circled over to a museum of Renaissance art, then strolled through the hip Brera district with outdoor cafes and trendy boutiques. Head to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping malls, which features some local shops among high-end brands like Prada. It opens up to the jaw-dropping Gothic-style Duomo.

Tom Petty a rock classicist from the beginning

NEW YORK — Given the leather jacket and sneer Tom Petty wore on the cover of his 1976 debut, many people assumed he was one of those cheeky punks bent on tearing down the walls of rock ‘n’ roll.

He wasn’t. It’s not that Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, didn’t have their share of energy and attitude. But the kid from Gainesville, Florida, was a rock classicist to the core, and he built a body of work to stand with his heroes.

That debut contained songs that stood the test of time, the snaky “Breakdown” and “American Girl,” which so echoed the Byrds that it confused that band’s leader. “When did I record that?” Roger McGuinn recalled thinking when he first heard it.

Only a week before his death Monday night after suffering cardiac arrest, Petty and the Heartbreakers finished a triumphant 40th anniversary tour in his adopted Southern California home. His sturdy compositions built a discography so strong he couldn’t get to all of his hits. “The Waiting,” ‘’Listen to Her Heart,” ‘’Here Comes My Girl,” ‘’Refugee,” ‘’You Got Lucky,” ‘’Don’t Do Me Like That,” ‘’Even the Losers,” ‘’Don’t Come Around Here No More.”

And so on. All are fist-pumping favorites.

drawl, and in concert he raised his arms to direct both his band and the thousands of fans singing along from the audience. “’Rock and roll star’ is probably the purest manifestation of the American dream,” Petty said upon his 2002 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “It’s a blessing beyond belief.”

As Petty and his band performed “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “American Girl” to the well-heeled audience, his daughters stood up and danced.

The Heartbreakers stood with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band as one of the all-time great rock backup bands. Petty wouldn’t give ground:

he added an expletive to his declaration on that night that the Heartbreakers weren’t just one of America’s best bands, they were THE best. Being able to stand onstage next to guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboard player Benmont Tench made Petty the envy of many bandleaders.

Still, two key periods of his career came without the Heartbreakers.

“Full Moon Fever,” Petty’s first solo album in 1989, stands as the apex of his career.

Working with producer Jeff Lynne, Petty fashioned a cleaner sound and created the classics “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” ‘’I Won’t Back Down” and, most indelibly, “Free Fallin’.”

He sings about “a good girl, crazy ‘bout Elvis, loves horses and her boyfriend, too.”

And the narrator admits, “I’m a bad boy,

‘cause I don’t even miss her. I’m a bad boy for breakin’ her heart.” He had his own problems.

Petty was also a member of the temporary supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys, with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Lynne.

Pulled together by Harrison to record a B-side to a single, “Handle With Care,” they soon realized that the song, and their sound, was too good to bury. It felt like a night at a Hollywood party, a bunch of rock legends break out the guitars, pour a few drinks, and maybe a few more, and trade lines with each other.

It’s a good life.

“It was a gift I was given and what it means I don’t know,” Petty said in a 2009 interview with The Associated Press.

“Johnny Cash once told me, he said, ‘it was a noble job.’ And I said, ‘Really?’ And he said, ‘Well, it makes a lot of people happy.’ ... It does. It makes a lot of people happy. You can lose sight of that. People come up to me on the street and tell me how some song played a role in their life or how it got

them through a hard time or this and that and I just think, ‘Damn, that’s what it is about.’”

Like everyone’s, Petty’s path wasn’t always smooth. Biographer Warren Zanes’ book revealed that Petty slipped into heroin addiction in the 1990s. He recently told Rolling Stone that his use of a Confederate flag as a prop while promoting a 1980s album, “Southern Accents,” was a stupid move he regretted. He was frustrated when the passage of time took him out of the spotlight when he actually deserved it: the 2014 album “Hypnotic Eye” was excellent, but the pop world had moved on.

Last December, as he was about to embark on the anniversary tour, Petty told Rolling Stone that it would likely be his last big jaunt with the Heartbreakers. He had a granddaughter he wanted to spend time with.

It was easy to dismiss it then. Heck, they were too good and not that old, not really. His old buddy Dylan is 76 and constantly on the road.

Sadly, it turned out to be true.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ is a wondrous spectacle

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has taken on the herculean task of directing the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic “Blade Runner,” a feat that seems nearly impossible to pull off, considering the reverence with which fans hold the original, one of the most unique and influential pieces of sci-fi cinema.

Villeneuve’s film, “Blade Runner 2049,” is a remarkable achievement, a film that feels distinctly auteurist, yet also cut from the very same cloth as Scott’s film.

This epic riff on the styles, themes and characters of “Blade Runner” expand the scope and story of this world. Written by original screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, “2049” is a meditative and moving film, sumptuously photographed by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins in the finest and most astonishing work of his career. He paints with light and shadow, creating a wonderfully tactile sense of space and texture, using a palette of slate, cerulean and marigold.

The aesthetic is subdued, yet thrilling. The score by Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer, sounding like rumbling engines and blaring sirens, simultaneously lulls and agitates.

To belabor story details is to miss the bigger picture of “Blade Runner 2049.” The style is rich, the themes are complex,

but the story is a simple, classically cinematic tale.

A man is faced with an existential quandary through which he reckons with his own soul and identity in the face of incredible dehumanization.

As LAPD officer K, searching out illegal replicants, Ryan Gosling is perfectly cast as a successor to Deckard (Harrison Ford). His nonchalance reflects the emotionally remote environment, the uneasy, distrustful daily existence in this dystopian, isolated future. He is riveting when K’s spirit tries to break through the studiously placid surface.

Sylvia Hoeks stuns as Luv, a character who seems to be a reference to Sean Young’s Rachael, just a whole lot tougher.

This is a dark future that feels all too plausible.

Nothing is sleek and shiny, but worn and faded. K wears comfortable knits

under his avant-garde top coat. He conducts his detective work the old-fashioned way, through card catalogs and micro-film — a blackout wiped out digital records, so this modernist world has become analog again.

It’s just different enough, but the drone warfare, dumpster bandits, child labor, and sex robots are all simply extensions of things that already exist.

“2049” is a wondrous spectacle, imbued with haunting questions about humanity. But it is flawed, as epics tend to be. At a beefy 2 hour, 43 minute run time, the film loses grip on its tight control of the storytelling in the third hour, and flails before finding an appropriate ending.

And while K’s intimate connections with others reflect the existence of his soul, one can’t help but feel that the perspective

on sex in the film is deeply rooted in uninterrogated male fantasy, despite the presence of fascinating female characters.

The conceit of both films is the Turing Test — human or machine?

The conceal and reveal exposes both the soul of machines and the coldness of a humanity that forces subordinate beings into slavery in the service of capitalism.

But is a machine sentient? What denotes personal bodily autonomy? What value can be found in the liminal space between human and machine? “Blade Runner 2049” poses those questions, raised 35 years ago, with a piercing, urgent sense of intelligence and intimacy.

“Pearl Jam: Let’s Play Two” — Watching this documentary on Pearl Jam’s concerts at Wrigley Field during the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 championship season, I was stirred by the lush, pristine sounds of the band (led by lifelong Cubbie fanatic Eddie Vedder) and by the gorgeous visuals in the concert sequences. This is one of the most vibrant-looking rock performance films of recent years. Documentary, not rated, 120 minutes. HHHH “Our Souls at Night” — In this lovely and bittersweet romantic comedy/drama, widowed acquaintances in a small Colorado town become awkward companions, then friends, then something more. As the two leads, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford disappear into their characters and execute each scene with flawless, naturalistic, utterly believable performances. Comedy drama, not rated, 103 minutes. HHH½ “American Made” — Tom Cruise gives one of his most energized and charming performances in years as a real-life CIA operative who laundered millions in ill-gotten cash and flew guns and cocaine. Sure, we get some big action, but the most memorable scenes involve Cruise in a room with a handful of other characters, usually neck-deep in an untenable situation. Comedy action, R, 115 minutes. HHH½ “Woodshock” — Nearly everything about a very early scene of a woman (Kirsten Dunst) giving her bedridden mom a spiked joint to help her commit suicide announces “Woodshock” as a film more concerned with the filmmakers’ artistic vision than any attempt to engage the audience. It’s a hazy, convoluted, Byzantine journey.

Drama, R, 101 minutes. H “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” — One Academy Award winner after another play cartoonish cardboard characters spouting ridiculous and often painfully unfunny dialogue. If you liked the original “Kingsman,” the best way to preserve that memory is to stay away from this bigger, louder sequel. Action adventure, R, 141 minutes. H½ “Brad’s Status” — The casting of Ben Stiller as a bitter, resentful underachiever taking his teenage son on a college tour is equal parts smart and problematic. He’s very good at playing this kind of character. The issue is whether we’re tired of him playing this kind of character.

Comedy drama, R, 102 minutes. HH “Battle of the Sexes” — Instead of impersonating Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, Emma Stone and Steve Carell create full-fledged, complex characters — flawed but endlessly fascinating. This finely tuned period piece about their 1973 tennis matchup works as a vibrant comedy, an effective character study and, yep, an inspirational sports movie. Sports biography, PG-13, 121 minutes. HHH½ “Stronger” — Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary guy fighting to recover after the Boston Marathon bomb shatters his legs, is a finely calibrated performance, one of the best of his career and deserving of nomination talk. What elevates “Stronger” above the triumph-over-adversity norm is the pitch-perfect feel for the dynamic of a loud and dysfunctional but fiercely loyal and loving extended family. Biography, R, 119 minutes. HHH½

MOVIES “Rebel in the Rye” — In a solid, well-acted and basically standard biopic of “Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger, Nicholas Hoult plays “Jerry” as cocky and smart-alecky but fragile and self-centered.

Unfortunately, we don’t see the full transformation of Salinger into the ever-more-eccentric author who all but disappeared from the world (and from publishing) for nearly a half-century. Biography, PG-13, 109 minutes. HHH “American Assassin” — A new recruit (Dylan O’Brien) training with a Secret Ops legend (Michael Keaton) is sent with a band of warriors to take out a terrorist mastermind. Unwise casting and ludicrous plotting mar the action, and at best I was buying about half of what “American Assassin” was selling. Action thriller, R, 112 minutes. HH “mother!” — The lives of a passive young woman (Jennifer Lawrence) and her much older husband (Javier Bardem) go from unsettling to bizarre after the arrival of a strange and rude couple (Ed Harris and Michelle

Pfeiffer). In this pounding, throbbing feature-length metaphor, director Darren Aronofsky assaults our senses with shocking and sometimes almost sickening imagery. It’s all staged with impressive craftsmanship, but to what end? Horror thriller, R, 121 minutes. HH “Home Again” — A recently separated mother (Reese Witherspoon) of two daughters moves into her luxurious childhood home and becomes involved with one of the young men crashing in the guesthouse. In this breezy bit of escapist fare, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disconnect with the characters in their bubble of upper-middle-class privilege. Comedy drama, PG-13, 97 minutes. HH “It” — This R-rated interpretation of Stephen King’s masterful 1986 novel is a bold, intense, beautifully paced, wickedly hilarious, seriously scary and gorgeously terrifying period-piece work that instantly takes its place among the most impressively twisted horror movies of our time. ‘The Mountain Between Us’ is romantic fantasy masquerading as adventure film

Most of us, in the lives we’ve chosen to lead, are highly unlikely to find ourselves stranded on a mountaintop with Idris Elba. This is something with which we must all, in our own individual ways, find peace. But, for those still holding on to the dream, here comes “The Mountain Between Us,” a Harlequin-worthy romantic fantasy masquerading as an outdoor-adventure film — and an example of a very silly movie almost transformed by the skill of the two actors at its center.

Photojournalist Alex (Kate Winslet) and neurosurgeon Ben (Elba) are strangers at an Idaho airport as the movie begins; however, faster than you can say “Umm, what?,” their flights are canceled and they’re buckling up in a private chartered plane, flown by a folksy fellow (Beau Bridges) with an ominous cough and a casual attitude toward filing flight plans.

And, just like that — crash! The pilot’s dead (but his cute dog isn’t), and Ben and Alex are stranded on a snowy mountain.

This is all more than a little contrived, but this is just the first few minutes; “The Mountain Between Us” has much more in store.

Let me just say that superheroes have nothing on Ben, who not only is a neurosurgeon who looks like Idris Elba but who knows how to build fires, find cutely romantic caves and cozy abandoned cabins, rig up makeshift IVs in medical emergencies, perform thrilling rescue missions and maintain impeccable grooming despite several weeks without a shower. And Alex? Well, she talks a lot. The dog is just a dog.

In the hands of lesser actors I shudder to think of what a slog “The Mountain Between Us” might be, with its endless catastrophes and near-deaths and melodramatic declarations.

But Winslet and Elba are so likable and charismatic together, they just about sell it.
