NEW ON DVD THIS WEEK “This Is the End”: Hollywood celebrities try to survive the end of the world.

There’s every reason in the world to hate “This Is the End,” which makes an unapologetic assault on everything from religious beliefs to sexuality with humor that’s pitch black in tone. And it takes gross-out material so far beyond conventional social limits that it makes “The Hangover” look like a Nickelodeon movie. It lewdly kicks what’s acceptable right in the political correctness.

What makes this movie work is the take-no-prisoners script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. No one’s career or public persona is safe from comic attack. Rogen even talks about his past film failures, particularly “The Green Hornet.” You will never be able to think of Emma Watson or Michael Cera the same way after what he’s put them through in this film.

“The Croods”: If this is an example of what’s supposed to be prehistoric comedy, then the genre should be allowed to become extinct.

There’s the potential for humor, but it never develops beyond a few sight gags that will entertain the preschool crowd. The movie follows a family of cave dwellers — The Croods — who only venture out long enough to search for food. They are afraid of anything new, the dark and, apparently, any joke that doesn’t have to do with one of them falling down.

The only member of their group with an adventurous heart is Eep (voiced by Emma Stone), but she would have to defy her protective father, Grug (Nicolas Cage), if she wants to see the world.

“The Croods” would have worked if the humor and animation had been more evolved.

“The Little Mermaid”: The animated tale of a mermaid who longs to leave the water is being released for the first time on Blu-ray. The film is a magical mix of engaging story, wonderful characters and a soundtrack that features some of the best tunes in the history of Disney animation.

“Glee: The Complete Fourth Season”: It’s a season of big changes as Rachel and Kurt move to New York.

“Beauty & The Beast — The First Season”: Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan star in the CW series.

he summer of 2013 was good for science fiction. Major studios backed such blockbuster entries as “Oblivion,” “Elysium” and “Pacific Rim,” and audiences flocked to see them. But the most ambitious sci-fi entry of the year is a different beast. It’s not futuristic, politically charged, nor concerned with alien invaders.

The 3-D space adventure “Gravity,” opening Friday, is a story about spacewalking astronauts stranded in Earth orbit after a barrage of satellite debris destroys their shuttle. It is a technically rigorous, “hard-science” rendering of powerful emotional themes — hope, survival and transcendence.

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play the shipwrecked astronauts, cast away with few options and dwindling air supplies.

Director Alfonso Cuaron (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Children of Men”) filmed in gliding, fluid takes that evoke universal feelings of anxiety and isolation.

After the film’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, Bullock and Cuaron discussed the film’s monumental — and potentially dangerous — technical challenges, the casting process and her fear of flying.

“I appreciate not being in my comfort zone because that means I’ve gotten as far away as possible,” Bullock said. “It unlocks things that scare you, frustrate you, but it also forces you to dig very deep. This scared me on every single level, primarily because originally it was supposed to be shot in the ‘Vomit Comet’” — NASA’s Reduced Gravity Aircraft, a Boeing 727 designed to make plummeting dives that send everyone aboard floating.

That was not a happy prospect for Bullock.

“I’m deathly afraid of flying. It’s one of my greatest fears. I thought it was just time to get over that fear.

The whole film is an experiment in what you have that you don’t know you have.”

Up until a week before shooting, she was led to believe that the production would be airborne, but Cuaron and company found other means to achieve the appearance of weightlessness.

“Gravity” begins with a spectacular, uninterrupted 17-minute shot that puts the viewer alongside the astronauts in orbit 375 miles above Earth. It was a major challenge of choreography that involved stringing up two of the world’s biggest movie stars like puppets dangling from strings.

“The biggest obstacle was the lack of gravity. When you are staging stuff, you are used to working with horizons and weight,” Cuaron said. “And here you didn’t have either. There is no up and there is no down. Everything is in constant motion.”

Designing intricate sequences of movements involving two actors and countless items of space debris was a major factor in the $100 million production’s 41⁄2-year production.

When the film was in the planning stage, Cuaron learned that there was no technology to film the scenes he envisioned with the feel of a NASA space documentary.

“We had to invent a new set of tools,” he said, from robotic rigs that would con-

trol cameras moving through 3-D space, to unproven digital technologies, to marionettelike cable systems for the stars.

The actors’ challenge was “not only knowing it was going to mean long, long, long, takes,” Cuaron said, “but it was going to be in really uncomfortable positions. Full credit goes to Sandra and George because they gave reality to the shots.”

“It was certainly something completely new” to shoot in such unorthodox conditions, Bullock said.

“More like being part of Cirque du Soleil than what we’d been used to as actors.”

To match the ever-changing light sources from Earth and the sun, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki

designed a 9- by 14-foot box whose interior was lined with LED bulbs. The box was big enough to hold one actor at a time while projecting shifting light.

“It was the most bizarre series of contraptions,” Bullock said. “Beyond the box, there were the arms that make the cars in Detroit, with the camera on it, which would rush toward you while you’re clamped from the waist down. Then there was the 12-wire system where you’re basically floating, while being manipulated by puppeteers.”

She performed on a bicycle seat welded to a pole, balancing with one leg strapped down so her body could be free to simulate weightlessness, and sitting in an office chair on a hydrau-

lic lift. “It was genius what they came up with.”

Because the process of setting up the film was so protracted, potential stars came together and fell apart.

Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman and Robert Downey Jr. all were attached to the project before Bullock and Clooney.

Cuaron met the actress following her Oscar win for “The Blind Side” and her painful split from thenhusband Jesse James. What impressed him most, he said, was “how in tune Sandra was with the theme of the film, which is adversity and the possibility of rebirth as an outcome of adversity. I thought, ‘Wow, I have a collaborator’?”

Bullock spent six months in physical training to prepare for shooting. She underwent a transformation to suggest that her character, who is plagued by memories of a private tragedy, had consciously stripped away her femininity, becoming “a shell of a woman.”

“You’re getting your story not just from what the humans are saying, but visually what’s happening,” Bullock said. “What is her background physically, emotionally; how is she in that environment?”

Working for much of the shoot in high-tech solitude actually helped her identify with the character, she said.

“The technology was helpful because you would feel so frustrated, so lonely, so panicked about the long time you’re attached to something and you can’t use your body the way you’re used to.”

It wasn’t all hardship.

Bullock’s star perk on the film set outside London was a play area for her 3-yearold son, Louis. Clooney’s was a tiki bar.

“Both my children knew exactly what they wanted,” she said with a laugh.

ANTWERP, Belgium — In today’s world of cruise ship travel, it is easy to forget how life-changing boarding a steamer once was.

When young Sonia Pressman Fuentes stepped aboard the Westernland II ship in Antwerp with her family on April 20, 1934, it was the biggest leap she would ever take.

“It made it possible for me to be alive — very simple answer. Otherwise we would have been killed,” the Jewish feminist leader said, recalling her family’s flight from the Nazis.

“We would have been killed in Germany had we remained there. We would have been killed in Belgium had we remained there. And we would have been killed in Poland if we had been deported there,” she continued. “The Red Star Line saved all our lives.”

Pressman Fuentes was back at the original docks of this huge North Sea port for Friday’s ceremonial opening of the Red Star Line migration museum, which shows how millions of Europeans steamed across the ocean toward the United States and Photographs of people who arrived on Ellis Island, New York, from Antwerp, Belgium.

It charts the migrations of everyone who traveled on the shipping line, from composer Irving Berlin to scientist Albert Einstein to Israeli politician Golda Meir. It is the story of countless people escaping poverty, seeking adventure, avoiding persecution or dodging certain death.

“What we are trying to achieve with the museum is to bring back all the stories of lives that were changed here,” said museum project coordinator Luc Verheyen.

Some 2 million passengers sailed from Europe to America between 1873 and 1934 on the Red Star Line. Antwerp was popular because it already was a massive port and it had a well-established Jewish community.

Nobel Prize winner Einstein was another famous passenger. When he was on the Belgenland II in 1933, he learned that the Nazis had confiscated his possessions so he decided not return to Berlin. Instead, he used Red Star Line stationery to declare his resignation from the Prussian Academy for the Sciences.

The museum highlights the eternal struggle of migration, a lesson as true today as it was decades ago.

“We tend to forget how hard it is to emigrate,” said Caroline Emmet-Bourgois, Berlin’s granddaughter.

“You are leaving behind your identity. You are going into the unknown. You are trying to give a future to your children and you are willing to lose what you already have to start anew.”

Justin Timberlake

“The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2” The anticipation that surrounded Justin Timberlake’s return to music was intense. It took seven years for him to follow up the Grammy-winning masterpiece that was “FutureSex/LoveSounds,” and when he did in March with “The 20/20 Experience,” the pop prince helped fill a void in our musical lives, thanks to his slick R&B sound jelled with dance beats.

Now, we may be getting too much of Timberlake.

“The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2” uses the same formula that’s becoming his musical trademark — the trance-inducing grooves and futuristic electronic beats helmed by Timbaland and Timberlake, who co-wrote each song. Unfortunately it doesn’t feel new. Like “FutureSex” and the first “20/20” album, the songs on “2 of 2” are long, but they aren’t as entertaining or as cohesive as his first effort. Some tracks sound like leftovers from past recording sessions, and — dare we say it — actually drag on.

The album starts on the wrong note with “Gimme What I Don’t Know (I Want)” and the nine-minute “True Blood,” both up-tempo songs that lack that Timberlakeesque spark and swag. The lead single, the disco number “Take Back the Night,” might be good for mere mortal pop stars, but compared to Timberlake’s own lofty standards, disappoints. A better choice would have been the Drake-assisted “Cabaret,” which is smooth and has an addictive hook.

Not all of “2 of 2” should be dismissed: “You Got It On” is soft slow jam — listen and you’ll feel like you’re on a cloud. And the midtempo “Drink You Away” is the disc’s most adventurous offering. It doesn’t sound like anything else on the album: It’s guitar driven with a strong backbeat, with a raw quality that makes it a bit indescribable — and exhilarating.

The multitalented Timberlake, one of a few who could get away with releasing two albums in a year (we’re still mad at One Direction for trying that), is releasing dense music when most Top 40 listeners have short attention spans. The album runs 74 minutes, and the average song is six minutes.

That’s not to say Timberlake shouldn’t challenge listeners with his music — he did it magically with the electro-pop flavor of “FutureSex” before dance music made its comeback, and “20/20” did not conform to radio standards either.

But even for those people who can deal with more than 140 characters and threeminute songs — that includes me — “2 of 2” doesn’t challenge enough, and we want and expect more from one of music’s best all-around entertainers, especially when the original “20/20 Experience” still has more so much more to offer. n Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

Kings of Leon

“Mechanical Bull” Three years after the Kings of Leon’s last record, the edgy, gravely rock foursome return in top shape with “Mechanical Bull.”

The album takes the band’s unique sound — the recognizable longing guitars and Caleb Followill’s growl — and adds a hint of melancholy and a stillness that gives the songs an aura of contentment.

Nervy desire and wildness is still present in their music, most prominently in “Tonight,” with its sexy vibes of earlier hits that hinted at mad tumbling into lust, and in the obsessive strummings of “Wait for Me.” The playful notes of the first single, “Supersoaker,” set the tone, adding a sense of giddiness to the proceedings.

“Don’t Matter” goes full-on rock in the beginning but is gradually imbued with a hint of Billy Joel. “Temple” starts out noisily and morphs into the confident stage presence of a rock star. “Beautiful War” rounds up the sound with a heartfelt ballad that showcases Followill’s voice. And “Family Tree” sounds like an old man trying to give advice to the young, who think they know better than everyone else.

Despite tackling the familiar themes of drunken nights and tentative love, the songs weave the story of a man who knows the meaning of being lost and who has finally been found. “Mechanical Bull” isn’t the anguished, edgy ride you’d expect from Kings of Leon but a fun, stirring experience you don’t want to end. n Cristina Jaleru, Associated Press

NEW YORK — “The Simpsons” may be going strong in its 25th season, but a major character from the long-running animated series will soon meet his or her maker.

In a conference call with reporters last week, executive producer Al Jean revealed plans to kill off a character in the season ahead.

“We’re actually working on a script where a character will pass away,” Jean said. “I’ll give a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”

“Simpsons” fanatics will know that this hint doesn’t exactly narrow things down: Nearly every member of the core ensemble of voiceover performers has won an Emmy, including Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Barney, Krusty), Julie Kavner (Marge, Patty, Selma), Hank Azaria (Apu, practically everyone else on the show), Nancy Cartwright (Bart) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).

‘Gravity’ has the weight of an epic space opera

Technically dazzling and emotionally gripping, “Gravity” is a space-age science fiction thriller grounded in something pretty close to reality.

A space shuttle/space junk accident picture, Alfonso Cuaron’s movie gives us Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, spacewalkers whose ship is wrecked, forcing them to face the ultimate human fear.

No one wants to die alone.

There is no place lonelier than the cold, silent and airless vacuum of space.

Filmed in a stunning “How’d they DO that?” 3-D, we meet chatty Matt Kowalski (Clooney) testing a new jet pack, and Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), who is wrenching away on the Hubble

thing like real time as they have 90 minutes before the next space junk pass to get to safety. But everything, and I do mean everything, stands in their way. The only missing menaces are Darth Vader and the creatures from “Aliens.”

Bullock’s Stone speaks for all of us as she deals with each fresh horror with a “What now?” She does some of her best acting in years, her mood shifting from desperation to resignation with just a look. She is well-cast as someone vulnerable, overmatched but with a backbone that surprises.

Cuaron, who directed “Children of Men” and the best Harry Potter movie (“Prisoner of Azkaban”), uses the silence of space brilliantly — muffled, distant radio transmissions, shockingly violent but silent crashes, with only the sound of panting and

faint yelping (in Bullock’s case) from our intrepid space explorers underscoring the disaster. They’re hurled, yanked and thumped, and all we hear is their gasping, their crackling radios and a thunk if they hit a compartment of a space ship that has oxygen in it.

The parade of accidents takes “Gravity” close to the realm of melodrama, and the physics of it all isn’t flawless. But you’d have to go back to “Apollo 13” and such ’60s epics as “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Marooned” to find a film this determined to perfectly dramatize the very real perils of spaceflight.

Bullock and Clooney make their peril our peril in this absolutely gorgeous, moving and sometimes exultant reminder that the real terrors of space are scary enough, without throwing in invented bug-eyed monsters.

In Woody Allen’s latest, the upper-crust world of an investment guru’s wife falls apart, and she moves in with her working-class sister.

Some great laugh lines and a couple of nifty plot pivots. With Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. Romantic comedy, R, 90 minutes. HHH “Enough Said” — The late James Gandolfini delivers one of the richest performances of his career as a middle-aged man who falls in love with a middle-aged woman (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Writer-director Nicole Holofcener (“Friends With Money”) again gives us mature, sometimes sardonic, authentic people moving about in a world we recognize.

Romantic comedy, PG-13, 93 minutes. HHH1⁄2 “Prisoners” — When his daughter and her friend go missing, Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman, more impressive than ever) becomes a man possessed. The masterful script takes us through a maze of plot complications and possible suspects. “Prisoners” is a white-knuckle, near-masterpiece of a thriller, falling short of greatness only because it goes on too long. Thriller, R, 153 minutes. HHH1⁄2 “Rush” — “Rush” ranks among the best movies about auto racing ever made, featuring great performances from Daniel Bruhl as detailobsessed Formula One driver Niki Lauda and Chris Hemsworth as his cocky rival, James Hunt. Soap Box Derby, Ron Howard’s “Rush,” like all great sports movies, is foremost about getting to know and understand the characters. This is one of his most impressive efforts.

Sports action, R, 123 minutes. HHHH “Salinger” — One can understand why the reclusive author J.D. Salinger (and the critics of this film) would cringe at many of the suppositions and stylistic flourishes in this documentary. But despite its considerable flaws, “Salinger” is a valuable and engrossing biography of the author of arguably the most beloved American novel of the 20th century. Documentary, PG-13, 129 minutes. HHH “Short Term 12” — Brie Larson gives one of the most natural performances of the year as Grace, a 20-something basically in charge of a facility for at-risk teens who have nowhere else to go. There are some deeply intense passages, but “Short Term 12” is also slyly funny, graceful, tender and peppered with moments of small joy. John Gallagher Jr. is excellent as Mason, who will not let Grace not love him. One of the best movies of the year and one of the truest portrayals I’ve ever seen about troubled teens and the people who dedicate their lives to trying to help them.

“Thanks for Sharing” — Though containing some dramatic moments, “Thanks for Sharing” is mostly a romantic comedy asking us to sympathize with sex addicts, including Adam (Mark Ruffalo), a handsome consultant fighting the temptation of self-destructive encounters.

We care about these people, we believe their problems are real and we want them to get the help they so desperately need. Tim Robbins, Gwyneth Paltrow and Josh Gad co-star.

Comedy drama, R, 112 minutes. HHH “The Family” — A mobster turned informant (Robert De Niro) enters the Witness Protection Program with his equally hot-tempered wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) and kids. Tommy Lee Jones is deadpan perfection as the agent in charge of the family’s protection. There are just enough moments of inspiration in this cheerfully violent comedy to warrant a recommendation -- especially if you know what you’re getting into. It’s weird. It’s different. It’s effective more often than not. Crime comedy, R, 111 minutes. HHH “The To Do List” — Aubrey Plaza is too mature to play a high school valedictorian suddenly determined to fulfill a bucket list of sexual adventures. Genuinely funny moments are few in a comedy that wastes the talents of TV

stars including Connie Britton, Donald Glover and Bill Hader.

In its own sloppy, raunchy, sophomoric, occasionally selfpleased and consistently energetic way, “This Is the End” is just about perfect at executing its mission, which is to poke fun at its stars, exhaust every R-rated possibility to get a laugh, and even sneak in a few insights into Hollywood, the celebrity culture and the nature of faith. HHHH “The Wolverine” — Dramatically ambitious and deliberately paced, “The Wolverine” is one of the better comic-book movies of 2013, thanks in large part to an electric performance by Hugh Jackman as the newly vulnerable mutant.

Lady Gaga to perform at first YouTube Music Awards on Nov. 3 The Associated Press

YouTube is launching its own music awards and Lady Gaga will perform at the first-time event.

The Google Inc.-owned company announced that Eminem and Arcade Fire will also perform at the YouTube Music Awards on Nov. 3. The awards will be presented at Pier 36 in New York City and will stream live online.

The announcement said the awards show will honor “artists and songs that YouTube fans have turned into global hits over the past year.” Nominees will be announced Oct. 17.

Actor Jason Schwartzman will host the YouTube Music Awards. A press release said the awards show will also feature events from Seoul, South Korea; Moscow; London; and Brazil.
