NEW ON DVD THIS WEEK “Man of Steel”: The film hits many of the major points in the Superman saga: He was born on Krypton, raised

by Kansas parents, falls for spunky Lois Lane and fights a threat that could wipe out Earth.

These same points were touched on with far more energy and passion with the Christopher Reeve movies of the late ’70s and early ’80s, or through the more sensitive take in the 2006 relaunch, “Superman Returns,” with Brandon Routh playing the DC Comics hero.

This familiar transformation of the comic book character to the big screen is the film’s biggest piece of kryptonite.

The movie travels little new ground — except for an expanded stay on Krypton and a darker tone — and is just a competent retelling of the tale. There’s nothing super about it.

“Turbo”: The tale of a snail that becomes so supercharged he gets to compete in the Indy 500 is a victim of bad timing, uninspired animation and voice talents that range from perfect to perfectly awful.

There’s nothing wrong with the animation. Except for the computer-generated Indy cars, there’s nothing visually exciting. The simple look of snails doesn’t give the animators a lot to work with. There are some shell differences, but overall the snails look similarly bland. And, for a movie about a snail, there’s no sense of size. Director David Soren needed to show what the world looks like from a snail’s point of view.

“Dexter: The Complete Final Season”: Although the cable series about a serial killer who works for the Miami police went out on a flat note, the series is still very strong. That’s reason enough to pick up this set, which includes the final 12 episodes of the often bone-chilling Showtime series.

“Dallas: The Complete Second Season”: Includes the final episodes with the late Larry Hagman.

“Ip Man: The Final Fight”: Legendary teacher and Wing Chun grandmaster returns to the screen.

“Combat!: The Complete Series”: Vic Morrow starts in TV’s longest-running World War II series (152 episodes).

“The Day Kennedy Died”: Interviews and rarely seen footage look at the hours leading up to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

“Paradise”: Academy Award winner Diablo Cody directs this tale of innocence lost and paradise found.

For the second installment of what’s been called a “unique” show, four local singer-songwriters will take the stage at the Conway Muse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night as the “Skagit Songwriters in the Round.”

The show will be an intimate departure from the traditional lineup style show.

The four musicians will sit in a semicircle with only guitars, and take turns playing songs while telling the story of each tune’s creation, sharing the deepest secrets of their music.

The four mostly local musicians — Gary Baugh, Myles Crawley, Mia Vermillion and Ford Giesbrecht — say they expect Saturday’s set to be as unique as the first one, in July at Washington Sips Wine Bar in La Conner.

“I think the uniqueness of it is that you hear the stories and there is interaction between the artists and the audience,” Baugh said. “I think it gives the audience a little insight into the mysteries of songwriting.”

Vermillion said the intimacy of the show and the contrast between the artists is what made it such a new experience.

“It was like sitting very close, like in a living room, with four people I hadn’t really met before,” she said.

“We were just meeting up and sharing a conversation and experience (about) the

creative process and music.”

Vermillion said — quite accurately — that the four of them are in stark contrast in both their music and their backgrounds.

Baugh started out playing coffeehouses around Pullman as a student at Washington State University.

After winning a talent showcase and discovering one of the judges was an agent,

Baugh started opening up for acts like Fleetwood Mac and Dave Loggins.

“As a freshman going through college, it was a pretty good gig if you could get it,” he said. “I got pretty spoiled.”

Baugh toured for a few more years touring before deciding he didn’t want to spend his life on the road and found a job in radio.

After he moved to La Conner and his responsibilities loosened, his wife encouraged him to get back to songwriting. Baugh recently released an EP of his nautically themed music, titled “Sound Waves,” and is working on another for the spring.

Crawley, after moving from Scotland to Los Angeles at age 14, found himself

singled out at school for his unusual fashion sense.

“All of the kids swarmed me because I looked nothing like them,” Crawley said. He met another unusual musician and they formed a band that enjoyed several years of success in the Orange County area.

The band eventually fell apart and Crawley moved on, first into acting, then audio engineering and — in a far departure from music — into drafting and owning a steel company. But he played music casually throughout.

“It was kind of the thing

that leveled me out,” he said.

These days, Crawley lives in Seattle, where he does music production. Although the July show was his first time on stage in 20 years, he now plays in public at least twice a week.

Giesbrecht didn’t pick up a guitar until he was 20, but the music had always been with him.

“It was always in there, lurking,” he said.

As a physics major in college, he saw an ad for classical guitar lessons and decided to try it out. “So I learned See MUSIC, Page E15

Here are 10 movies that could annoy pirates

There are news reports that make you angry. There are news reports that make you sad. There are news reports that make you smile.

Once in a while, there is a news report that makes you laugh so hard that you have to write a column about it.

I am speaking, of course, of the news report that tankers and other ships off the coast of Africa have begun using the music of Britney Spears to scare off Somali-based pirates. I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Certain ships have installed speakers (aimed outward) so they can blast early Britney tunes at the fast-moving boats carrying armed pirates. Apparently, “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “… Baby One More Time” have proven to be an effective deterrent to the problem of piracy. I suppose it’s possible that the pirates are more into classical music or jazz, but it is more likely that Britney’s music offends their beliefs. I know it offends many of my beliefs, but I’m not a pirate.

Forget increased security guards. Forget highpressure hoses. Forget Tom Hanks. In the fight against piracy, it’s all about Britney.

But why stop with the pop princess? The music world doesn’t have a monopoly on fending off people with bad intent. The movie industry can make a significant contribution to the ongoing war against piracy.

sound and show a continuous loop of film clips to ward off evildoers. Here are 10 suggestions of actors, films and movie characters that are so annoying that they could turn around any pirate ship: 1. Adam Sandler in almost any movie: If Britney annoys pirates, imagine how they would feel about seeing this goofball actor coming at them in living color. But piracy is a serious problem, and these pirates are a determined group of thugs, so I would suggest three particular Sandler films — “Little Nicky,” “Jack and Jill” and “That’s My Boy.” Together,

they mark a low point in Hollywood filmmaking, but individually, they might prove to be high point in the war on piracy.

2. Jon Favreau in “Swingers”: As the screenwriter of this 1996 classic, Favreau wrote himself the single most annoying scene in the history of cinema.

His insecure character Mike decides to call the woman he just met in the Dresden. He gets her answering machine, and proceeds to leave a string of awkward and embarrassing messages that make the audience cringe and squirm. If the scene has that effect on moviegoers

watching a comedy, one can only assume that it would have a devastating effect on Somali pirates who have never been to the Dresden.

3. Joe Pesci in the “Lethal Weapon” movies: Pesci terrified us as a ruthless gangster in the films “Goodfellas” and “Casino,” but the annoying informant Leo Getz in these comedies should strike fear in the hearts of pirates. That nasal voice would be as deadly as a cannonball on the high seas.

4. Stephen Tobolowsky in “Groundhog Day”:

Doesn’t sound familiar?

Trust me, you sure as heckfire will remember his character Ned Ryerson, the persistent insurance salesman who keeps bugging Bill Murray. Needlenose Ned, as he calls himself, is so determined and positive that he could lead the entire anti-piracy effort.

5. Jar Jar Binks in “Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace”: Millions of moviegoers went running from theaters because of this character, so it is only logical to assume that Somali pirates would do the same. In fact, if George Lucas hadn’t invented him, the CIA surely would have.

6. All of “The Matrix Revolutions”: The third film in the trilogy would either bore the pirates to death, or leave them so confused that they would all return to Somalia and get jobs at Jamba Juice.

7. Kate Capshaw in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”: Steven Spielberg fell in love with the actress as he directed her in this action film. The

audience did not fall in love with her character, nightclub singer Willie Scott. In fact, her highpitched screaming would not only frighten pirates but would endanger dogs who might be tempted to swim to her voice.

8. Denise Richards in “The World Is Not Enough”: Somali pirates would have the same reaction as American moviegoers to watching the actress play nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones in this 1999 James Bond adventure. They would laugh so hard that they would forget what they were planning to do.

9. Mickey Rooney in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”: Even Somali pirates would be offended by this racist characterization of Audrey Hepburn’s Asian landlord.

They wouldn’t even want to negotiate a ransom with the West after seeing this.

10. Geena Davis in “Cutthroat Island”: Once they’ve seen this horrible pirate movie, the Somalis will never want to be pirates again.

The Beatles ‘Live at the BBC Volume 2’

In 1963, the Beatles became an international sensation. They released two albums, “Please Please Me” in March, “Meet the Beatles” in the fall. In their groundbreaking hit, “Please Please Me,” they discovered what they could do in a studio; it got to No. 1 in England. But “She Loves You,” released that August, explodes, still, today. It was new, it was better, it was great. They released “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in the U.S. in December. Soon, Ed Sullivan.

During 1963, somehow, they were also touring all over England, and doing no fewer than 39 appearances on BBC. That summer, they even had their own weekly show on the BBC, “Pop Go the Beatles.”

Now we have a new, two-disc Beatles album, “On Air — Live at the BBC Volume 2”, concentrating on the 1963 radio recordings, with Disc 2 slopping musically over into ’64.

It’s sparkling. Get it, stick it in the machine, and jack up the speakers. You’ll hear what these four young men (Ringo Starr, the eldest, turned 23 in July of that year) sounded like when they rocked live.

I’m giving it three rather than four stars for a reason, as shall become apparent. It’s not the music!

It was all quite mad. The group often had to drive in a van from a gig in the north, travel the length of England, “try and find” the BBC in London, lurch into the studios, record live (one overdub, if that) in next to no studio time. Then they hopped back in the van and broke back north for a gig.

Some recordings stayed on tape, almost all of them long gone. But many were transferred to discs, the source of most of the tracks here. (A few come from fan recordings off the radio. These have an authentic low-fi edge.)

Combed, filtered, digitized and EQ’d, these tracks are mono, lucid and vibrant.

They sound more present, more bracing than the slicker 1994 CDs “Live at the BBC,” reissued this week, remastered. The 1994 CDs cover the period up to “Help!,” so the playing and songwriting are better.

But the performances on Volume 2 are more fun.

On record, George Martin, like all producers, emphasized the best (Lennon and Paul McCartney) and tended to sink the less good (he thought, George Harrison and Ringo Starr). Not here. No place to hide. And the band sounds great.

They rescue “From Me to You” from its skiffle fate, in a wild live show before an audience on the BBC’s “Easy Beat.” “I’ll Get You” builds and sexualizes the tune more than the studio version could. “She Loves You” explodes, almost as nuts as the record. “This Boy” betters the studio version, a steadier performance, the three boys singing at one mike. “There’s a Place,” a deep-track gem, is rougher, desperate, made into superb rock.

Starr shows he could play — and was crucial. Thanks to 2000s balancing, we hear McCartney’s bass with a presence undoable in 1963. We hear Harrison, playing a better instrument than the hard-driving Lennon, choosing different inversions and colors, already thinking of arrangements.

This was a well-rehearsed band, doing tunes they were doing every night. Singing is far more confident than on the records.

On “Money,” Lennon earns his rep, in those days, as a “savage” vocalist. Starr sings well on “Boys,” which, like the studio version, is one-take-only. And his vocals on “Honey Don’t” (one of three Carl Perkins tunes) are much better, the track more muscular, than the polite “Beatles for Sale” version. Harrison impresses on “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” with true vocal personality.

McCartney’s tenor-plus is indestructible everywhere. “Lucille” is a dirty, low-fi, unhinged wonder, the band rocking so hard it almost falls apart, McCartney screeching with jungle precision. “Hippy, Hippy Shake,” again Paul-led, is positively dangerous; this take is better than one six months later, heard on the 1994 CD. “Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey,” one of the latest recordings here (November 1964), is crazy. Starr’s snare, right up your snout, imparts a garage-rock feeling, suiting Paul’s Little Richard stratospherics.

A final treat: a raw “I Feel Fine” without overdubs (compare it with the finished radio product on the 1994 album).

Lennon has trouble finding the harmonic that provokes the famous feedback, but

when he gets it, what follows is thrashy, barely-held-together, splendid chaos.

Time to get indignant. There’s padding.

About 32 minutes of it. We get interviews from 1965 (John and George) and 1966 (Paul and Ringo). Only one (John) is worth listening to, end to end, as he worries over where to send his son to school (he wants racial and class diversity), and how to shake his rep as an uncaring person. The other three, not so much, except maybe for “Rubber Soul”-era Harrison on songwriting and arrangements.

You’ll listen to these exactly once, if that. Meh. With all the good rocking, on a doubleCD package with only 76 minutes total of actual music, many tracks less than two minutes long, why, why, why would you waste such a precious half-hour? The music’s so good, why not give us more?

(There is more, as you can find on many websites and bootlegs.)

As for the remastered 1994 CDs, if you don’t have ’em, get ’em. The remastering helps — only a trifle, to be honest, but at least there’s no padding. And there are true knockouts: Lennon on “Baby, It’s You,” McCartney’s all-electric “Things We Said Today,” and a late performance of the ditty that began it all, “Love Me Do.” The band bumps this execrable song up to something better, something with guts.

Finally, hear “Ticket to Ride,” dark, dominated by John’s agonized voice and Paul’s newly confident bass. Something unexpected was coming.

The title song references Patsy Cline as a salve for difficult nights, then cites all the personal weaknesses, quirks and strengths that make her who she is. She leans on current themes in country music in “Closer To Nowhere,” about drinking with a friend and disappearing into a rural hideout, but makes it believable.

She’s at her best on sensitive ballads (“Tough All Over,” “Someone Somewhere Tonight,” “I Forgive You”) yet nicely handles roots-rich stompers like “Selma Drye” (about her grandmother), “Buzzin’” and “Ring For Sale.” n Michael McCall, Associated Press

Brandy Clark “12 Stories”

Forgive Brandy Clark the literary pretension of calling her debut album “12 Stories,” and driving home the point that she’s a writer’s writer with a picture of numerical typewriter keys on the album cover.

The 36-year-old native of Morton, Wash., has cut her teeth penning hits for Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire and others, but she’s wisely kept the best for herself, with a quick wit, keen eye for n John Timpane, The Philadelphia Inquirer detail, and a sure sense of empathy. ‘Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’ Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Genre: Action Publisher: Ubisoft ESRB Rating: M, for Mature Grade: 4 stars (out of 5)

When hitting the open seas in large vessels was introduced in “Assassin’s Creed III,” it was a welcome diversion from the normal activities on land. Series veterans had grown accustomed to sneaking around rooftops, quietly assassinating high-ranking officials and generally being a nuisance to the Templars and fomenting revolution.

Now the tide has turned (bad pun intended) and the focus in “AC IV” stays primarily on the water. Diversions take

you upon land to raid forts, discover buried treasure and continue the grand pirate tradition of making chaos, all while collecting a handsome bounty. The time you spend on land may actually take longer by count of the clock, but you will relish the seafaring portions more since they help tie together the story and missions in a way not experienced in previous franchise games.

Keeping the tradition of “Assassin’s Creed,” the story is split between the future and the past. After (spoiler) Desmond dies in the future at the conclusion of “AC III,” his consciousness goes to a cloud-computing system owned by Abstergo, the corporate front for the Templars. This shift allows us to go back in time and take command of a new character, Edward Kenway, a British businessman-turned-pirate (who, for continuity’s sake, becomes the grandfather of the lead character in “AC III”).

pirate-themed game makes perfect sense.

Instead, you travel the seas taking on contracts and plundering at your leisure. A primary task is building up your ship into something that captains come to fear.

On-land combat and missions play out as you expect. Scaling structures, leaping out of shadows and hiding spots to eliminate threats, hidden blades and gunfire — everything you’ve played before repeats itself, but here in more lavish settings.

Swampy jungles, upstart island communities, military forts and more await your quiet feet and quick wits.

You learn that, sometimes, boarding and capturing a ship or not burning a village to the ground offers greater rewards in terms of money and supplies — crucial items to keeping your boat in top shape and allowing you to build a crew of mates.

It’s refreshing to have some strategy built in, unlike in other games where “question nothing, destroy everything” remains dominant.

The online multiplayer returns with

familiar modes from previous iterations, so you’re out of luck if you were hoping for competitive naval battles. Considering the push for new adventures in “Black Flag,” it certainly feels like the multiplayer was tacked on as an afterthought. This doesn’t make it any less fun, just a missed opportunity.

With a rich story that feels more tied to the gameplay rather than a means to connect missions together, and featuring a highly diverse assortment of locations and activities, “Black Flag” certainly plays and feels more expansive than any previous game in the series.

Instead of over-the-top, Johnny Deppinspired caricatures, you get a more human experience, and this elevates the plot rather than mocks it.

Some argued that the American Revolution theme of the last game would mark the franchise’s pinnacle. Perhaps that’s the case. But, at the very least, Ubisoft shows in “Black Flag” that there are still plenty of intriguing stories to tell.

In 1975 and ’76, Paul McCartney and Wings undertook the epic “Wings over the World” tour, their largest-scale tour ever. From this tour came both the legendary “Wings over America” triple live album and the concert film “Rockshow,” a good portion of which was filmed in the Kingdome in 1976. The film premiered in November 1980 in New York and April 1981 in London. It was released on Betamax and later on laserdisc. Now, for the first time, the complete concert is being made available, fully restored from the original 35mm film and with remastered sound, including a 5.1 mix. $10 general; $9 seniors, students and active military; $8 members; $7 children 12 and under.

the term “yellow journalism” — to Charles Schulz (“Peanuts”), classic “Pogo” story lines from Walt Kelly, Garry Trudeau’s “Doonesbury,” Chester Gould’s “Dick Tracy,” early “Blondie” strips from Chic Young and the entire collection of Jeff Smith, an Ohio State graduate who created the hugely popular “Bone” series of comic books.

It’s all been moved to a new 30,000-square-foot home in a high-profile corridor of the sprawling Columbus campus, into a space renamed for Ireland, the former editorial cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch who was one of the pioneers of the art form. His family donated a big chunk of money for the project.

The new place has also got what’s been missing at the museum’s two previous campus locations: a large gallery space for permanent and rotating exhibitions of comics and cartoon art that will finally give it the air of a proper museum.

Brian Walker, who collaborates on the “Beetle Bailey” and “Hi and Lois” newspaper strips created in the 1950s by his 90-yearold father, Mort, is putting together one of the first exhibits.

“I told my father, this is what we’ve all be working for for 30 years,” says Brian Walker, who has written or contributed to three dozen books on the history of comics.

Today the museum collection includes more than 300,000 original strips from everybody who’s anybody in the newspaper comics world, plus 45,000 books, 29,000 comic books and 2,400 boxes of manuscript material, correspondence and other personal papers from artists.

It’s partly because of the Walkers that the museum is what it is today. They held thousands of original comics and artifacts donated to the Mort Walker-founded International Museum of Cartoon Art in Boca Raton, Fla. When the museum ran into financial trouble during the recession, the Walkers were per-

suaded in 2008 to donate the entire collection, which included 200,000 original strips, to Ohio State.

About a decade before, the museum got the entire collection of the defunct San Francisco Academy of Comic Art, which included 2.5 million clipped newspaper comic strips and Sunday color comics.

Robb says she’s especially proud of the collection of original strips and other papers donated by Bill Watterson, the famously reclusive creator of the “Calvin and Hobbes” strip.

“We think this will be a destination for comics fans from around the country and around the world,” Robb says.

“Then someone suggested I listen to some jazz records, and I liked that.”

After college, he focused on his career but kept the music in the background.

When he moved to Camano Island in 2001, he didn’t like the job he had, so he quit and started teaching guitar lessons. Two years ago, Giesbrecht finally started playing at a Mexican restaurant regularly, and cut his teeth as a performer, he said.

Baugh invited him to join the first Songwriters in the Round show after hearing some of his original songs.

For Vermillion, music was always an innate part of her.

“I can’t remember not being able to sing well,” she said. “I think I’m wired for it.”

Vermillion, a self-taught guitarist, didn’t take the leap as a professional musician until her mid-40s. She pieced together an album of original songs that she was ready to share.

“It had been so private and I wanted to put it out there,” she said.

The album was a success and soon she had won a state blues contest that would lead her to national attention in Memphis.

Unfortunately, a back injury forced her to skip the Memphis competition and she took two years off from music. She managed to pick things up in 2011 where she left off and started playing out frequently.

For the last year she has focused on work as a soloist and is currently putting together material for a new album.

The July show packed the tiny Washington Sips Wine Bar’s back room and the songwriters all said they expect a full house Saturday.

Payne, working from a Bob Nelson script, lovingly sums up the milieu of thousands of dying little rural farm towns whose aging populations are still social enough to hit the Sodbuster Bar & Grill, but who long ago ran out of much to say to one another.

Woody can’t help but share his good news with an old partner, a character so sharply played by Stacy Keach that he is small-town venality summed up in one, neat, gregarious package.

The old are sticking around towns like Hawthorne because it’s all they’ve ever known, and the younger adults we meet — a generation removed from the hard work of the farm — are trapped,

overweight and just self-aware enough to be bitter about it.

David discovers dimensions to his stubborn, addled dad and bullying, co-dependent mom. Bob Odenkirk plays the small-town TV reporter brother who doesn’t get to make the same internal journey David does.

And Dern, a great character actor who made his mark opposite everyone from Robert Redford and John Wayne to Jane Fonda, embraces the role of a lifetime. He only occasionally lets us see the rascal he was through this disheveled, troubled, reticent wreck of a man. There might be an Oscar nomination for him in a movie that is, in every sense, a victory lap for a great career — a lap that circles and staggers from Billings to Lincoln, with every amusing or melancholy stop in between.

Smack in the middle is Tom Hanks in a career-crowning performance as a worldly sea captain taken hostage by Somali pirates.

Even as Greengrass’ signature kinetic style renders us nearly seasick and emotionally spent from the action, it’s the work of Hanks that makes this film unforgettable. Thriller, PG-13, 134 minutes. HHHH “Dallas Buyers Club” — Matthew McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a grimy, shady, homophobic, substance-abusing horndog in 1985 Texas who learns he’s HIV-positive and procures unapproved means of treatment. McConaughey’s masterful job of portraying one of the more deeply flawed anti-heroes in recent screen history reminds us why he became a movie star in the first place. We start out loathing this guy and learn to love him. Jared Leto disappears into the role of a transgender drug addict and Jennifer Garner is Ron’s empathetic doctor. Drama, R, 117 minutes. HHH1⁄2 “Diana” — Naomi Watts neither looks nor sounds like the people’s princess, but she’s not the problem in this fractured fairy tale about the last two years in Diana’s life. No actress alive could have elevated an overwrought screenplay brimming with some of the most awkward patches of dialogue heard in any movie of 2013.

HH “Ender’s Game” — A firstrate cast of wily veterans (Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley) and fresh-faced youngsters (Asa Butterfield of “Hugo”) deliver a rousing, challenging adventure that should satisfy most young fans of the beloved sci-fi novel while keeping the adults engrossed as well. HHH1⁄2 “Runner Runner” — After an intriguing setup about a young poker whiz (Justin Timberlake) entering the inner circle of an online gambling mogul (Ben Affleck) in Costa Rica, “Runner Runner” devolves into a by-the-book thriller. Thriller, R, 91 minutes. HH “Rush” — “Rush” ranks among the best movies about auto racing ever made, featuring great performances from Daniel Bruhl as detail-

obsessed Formula One driver Niki Lauda and Chris Hemsworth as his cocky rival, James Hunt. Even if you don’t know Formula One from the Soap Box Derby, Ron Howard’s “Rush,” like all great sports movies, is foremost about getting to know and understand the characters. This is one of his most impressive efforts.

Sports action, R, 123 minutes. HHHH “Salinger” — One can understand why the reclusive author J.D. Salinger (and the critics of this film) would cringe at many of the suppositions and stylistic flourishes in this documentary. But despite its considerable flaws, “Salinger” is a valuable and engrossing biography of the author of arguably the most beloved American novel of the 20th century. Documentary, PG-13, 129 minutes. HHH “The Book Thief” — A wondrous, richly textured,

HHHH “Thor: The Dark World” — Fires on all cylinders at times, with fine work from returning stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, a handful of hilarious sight gags and some cool action sequences. But it’s also more than a little bit silly and quite ponderous and overly reliant on special effects that are more confusing than exhilarating. Let’s face it, Thor’s kind of a bore and not nearly as intriguing as his deeply conflicted adopted bro, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Fantasy action, PG-13, 112 minutes. HH1⁄2 “The Best Man Holiday” — As was the case in 1999’s “The Best Man,” the talented and enormously likable cast (including Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan and Nia Long) have terrific, natural chemistry in this sequel and turn in excellent performances while alternating between light

comedy and some seriously heavy dramatic lifting. Comedy drama, R, 122 minutes.

HHH “The Family” — A mobster turned informant (Robert De Niro) enters the Witness Protection Program with his equally hot-tempered wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) and kids. Tommy Lee Jones is deadpan perfection as the agent in charge of the family’s protection. There are just enough moments of inspiration in this cheerfully violent comedy to warrant a recommendation -- especially if you know what you’re getting into. It’s weird. It’s different.

It’s effective more often than not. Crime comedy, R, 111 minutes. HHH “The Fifth Estate” — Benedict Cumberbatch shines as the mercurial Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, playing him as someone who’s so disconnected from normal human politeness he seems borderline autistic. Neither hagiography nor character assassination, “The Fifth Estate” unfolds at a sometimes feverish pace, capturing that mad rush of adrenaline felt by those who post breaking news online and raising fascinating, complex questions about the evolving nature of journalism. With Daniel Bruhl, as Assange’s first chief disciple, Laura Linney and Stanley Tucci. Biographical drama, R, 124 minutes. HHH

MONA EXHIBITS: The Museum of Northwest Art is hosting two new shows through Jan. 5 at 121 S. First St., La Conner. n “Ric Gendron: Rattlebone” features paintings and related works of Spokane artist Ric Gendron, a dual-enrolled member of the Arrow Lakes Band of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla. Gendron is a little-known but important late-career Native artist; the exhibition will feature more than 30 years of his vibrantly expressionistic and lyrical paintings and prints.

Curated by Ben Mitchell, “Rattlebone” originated at Missoula Art Museum in November 2012, and will next travel to the Museum of Contemporary Indian Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M. n “Geology”: from the Permanent Collection: This multidisciplinary exhibit pairs science and art with the Northwest’s geological findings and the collection’s palette. “Best of the Festival 2013”: Featuring the top award-winning quilts from the museum’s annual Quilt Festival, the show continues through Nov. 24. The exhibit will include the Best of Show winner as well as the top entries in Traditional Pieced, Non-Traditional Pieced, Wearable Arts, Best Use of Recycled Materials and Best Use of Embellishment categories. The People’s Choice award-winner also will be on display.

“Abstracted”: The exhibition by the Fiber Art Network from Western Canada explores the concept of realistic and abstract art.

Pairs of artists will illustrate their subject — one in a representative fiber art piece and one in an abstract/non-representative piece. Vivian Kapusta is the show’s guest curator. The show continues through Dec. 29.

“Inspired to Design: Art Quilts by Elizabeth Barton”: Barton paints or dyes all of the fabric she uses in her nontraditional quilts, which she describes as “contemporary,” “art quilts” or “fiber collages.”

Her work is focused on a few particular themes:
