“TRIAL & RETRIBUTION: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION”: All you really need to know about this long-running British production is it comes from Lynda La Plante, the creative force behind “Prime Suspect,” one of the finest detective series ever made. Just as in “Prime Suspect,” “Trial & Retribution” features complicated characters, smart plots and a captivating darkness.

The set includes the 22 feature-length mysteries created and written by the BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee.

If you are a fan of “Law & Order,” La Plante’s offerings follow a similar structure.

Each case is followed from the scene of the crime to the courtroom verdict. The first case in Volume One is a 5-year-old girl who disappears. Pushed by a tight window to find the girl, the police launch a search, but that changes as more is revealed.

La Plante’s style is to make sure the police elements are in line with what would

happen in a similar real-life situation. She also makes sure to keep the human element of the story realistic, whether it be an early suspect or the members of the police dealing with the case. This results in complicated characters for David Hyman, Victoria Smurfit and Colin Salmon to play.

Guest stars in the series include Hugh Dancy, Iain Glen, Simon Callow, Greg Wise, Gemma Jones, Corin Redgrave, Charles Dance, Rosamund Pike and Michael Fassbender.

RACE DAY! SKI TO SEA SET FOR SUNDAY

The numbers associated with Ski to Sea are almost difficult to believe.

Whatcom County’s signature team relay race — made up of everything from cross-country skiing to cyclocross biking — has been held for 45 years.

Over the years, the oneday race that covers 93 miles of terrain has grown to draw more than 3,000 competitors and more than 10,000 spectators.

But with this year’s race approaching on Sunday, May 26, curious spectators will have more than just the numbers to be wowed by, said race director Anna Rankin.

“When I go to expos to introduce people, I’m amazed as they are that when I show them the course, we have 93 miles of terrain, parks and properties where this can happen, where all seven of the sports can happen seamlessly,” she said.

The events in the race are cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding, running, road biking, canoeing, cyclocross biking and kayaking. The course begins at Mount Baker Ski Area and ends at Bellingham Bay; it runs through Maple Falls, Lynden and Ferndale, among other towns.

At the last available count before press time, there were more than 400 teams signed up. Teams are made up of varying numbers of athletes and hail from five countries (as far away as Korea) and 29 states.

Information about watching the race can be found on the website, Rankin said. Additionally, anyone interested in the unique event can get an even better view by volunteering for a future race.

Poetry double feature at Pelican Bay

ANACORTES — San Juan Island resident Gary Thompson will read from his collection of poems at 7 p.m.

Friday, May 24, at Pelican Bay Books and Coffeehouse, 520 Commercial Ave. Thompson will be joined by Alicia Hokanson, who will read from her collection of poetry as well.

Thompson has published several books of poems with “One Thing After Another” being the most recent.

He has completed a new collection of poems about the Salish Sea, tentatively titled “Sea Matters.”

Hokanson was a teacher for 40 years and now spends her time reading, writing and practicing political activism in Seattle and on Waldron Island.

She’s published two chapbooks titled “Insistent in the Skin” and “Phosphorous.” Her first collection of poems, “Mapping the Distance,” was selected

LANGLEY — Finally, a 5-kilometer run that’s not just limited to humans. That’s right — PAWZ by the Sea invites you and your dog to participate in a race together.

The race has two options: 5- or 10-kilometer circular routes through downtown Langley. It will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on Second Street.

The kids’ race starts at 10:30 a.m. at the same location.

Dogs must be leashed for the duration of the run.

The top 10 summer movies taking aim at ‘Avengers’ ‘21 BRIDGES’ When this police adventure went into production two years ago, it was just a blip on Hollywood’s radar. Then star Chadwick Boseman parlayed a part-time gig with the “Avengers” into last year’s megahit “Black Panther,” and suddenly the movie’s marquee power skyrocketed. The story involves a massive manhunt for cop killers that results in the entirety of New York City being put on lockdown.

The obscure title refers to the closing of the city’s bridges. July 12.

The tremendous response to “Avengers: Endgame” set the bar pretty high for the slate of summer movies. But that doesn’t mean that the rest of Hollywood is giving up without a fight — be it involving superpowers (Spider-Man), superstars (Elton John) or super hits (“Toy Story”). Here are the movies that will be jockeying for superiority in the next few weeks (release dates are subject to change).

‘ALADDIN’ AND ‘THE LION KING’ The live-action version of “Aladdin” features Will Smith playing the genie (if anyone could replace the effervescent Robin Williams, he’s the one).

Later this summer we’ll get a reboot of “The Lion King” in what’s being described as “photorealism,” a souped-up version of computer-generated images that supposedly resemble photographs.

From what we’ve seen of them so far, they are, indeed, impressive. “Aladdin” opens Friday, “The Lion King” on July 19.

‘ROCKETMAN’ Here comes another splashy, toe-tapping biography about a musical icon. In this case, it’s Sir Elton John. British TV star Taron Egerton, who does his own singing in the movie, got John’s seal of approval to the point that the two of them have performed together. May 31.

and Mindy Kaling have teamed up for this comedy that comes with a side order of feminist indignation. Thompson plays a late-night TV talk show host who fears that her male bosses are trying to force her out. Kaling, who also wrote the movie, plays the only woman on the show’s writing staff.

The script is based on the time Kaling spent as the only female in the writers’ room for “The Office.”

Envisioned as an indie release, the movie set off a bidding war at Sundance.

June 7 ‘TOY STORY 4’ The gang’s all back for the next chapter in this incredibly successful animated series. That includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Bonnie Hunt, Wallace Shawn and even Don Rick-

les, whose lines as Mr. Potato Head were pieced together from recordings of the late comic. There are some big-name new voices, too, including Jordan Peele and Keanu Reeves. Not much is being revealed about the plot except that it involves the toys mounting a rescue mission to save one of their own — which is pretty much the plot for all the “Toy Story” movies. June 21.

‘YESTERDAY’ A movie based on the music of the Beatles sounds guaranteed to exude good vibes — until you discover that it’s directed by Danny Boyle of “Trainspotting” fame.

The story involves a hack songwriter (played by Himesh Patel, TV’s “Eastenders”) who discovers that no one remembers

the Beatles, so he tries to pass off their hit songs as his own. June 28.

‘SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME’ Tom Holland, who donned the Spidey suit for the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as well as the last two “Avengers” episodes, is back for this adventure. Bummed out by the way things concluded in “Avengers: Endgame,” Peter Parker goes on a trip to Europe.

When various evil creatures threaten to wreak havoc, he joins forces with fellow superhero Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in hopes of saving the world and, by extension, the Marvel Universe. Director Jon Watts returns from “Homecoming.” July 2.

‘ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD’ This Quentin Tarantino movie has gotten as much attention for all the wrangling involved in getting it made as for the contents of the film itself. Set in late ’60s Los Angeles — a time when the movie industry was going through massive changes, we’re told — it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. July 26.

‘THE KITCHEN’ Last year’s all-female heist movie “Widows,” which a lot of insiders had pegged as a niche film, shocked box-office forecasters by becoming a hit. Was that just a one-off oddity, or does it reflect the discovery of the previously overlooked moving-going demographic of women who like action movies involving women? We should get an answer with the release of this 1970s adventure in which Elisabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy play mob wivesturned-mobsters. Aug. 9.

‘Tomorrow Man’ script fails fascinating characters, but Danner, Lithgow shine

A prepper and a hoarder walk into a grocery store … and therein lies the meet-cute of Noble Jones’ debut feature, “The Tomorrow Man,” an odd little romantic dramedy starring John Lithgow and Blythe Danner.

The film starts with a promising premise, and Jones lays out the details of his main character in a carefully studied, mannered fashion. Lithgow plays Ed, a meticulous doomsday prepper who buys canned goods, batteries and gas every day and stashes it in a secret bunker. He thinks the local news anchor is speaking directly to him and posts on conspiracy theory message boards daily. But when he meets — or rather, stalks — Ronnie (Danner) in his local grocery store, all his obsessive tendencies have a new object of attention and affection, whom he is convinced is of like mind.

She also grocery shops a lot and has a penchant for war documentaries.

“The Tomorrow Man” is a story about two very lonely people connecting — if they can only get over their own baggage, which is represented quite literally in the useless stuff they’ve accumulated in their homes. Jones, who wrote, directed and shot the film, is making the switch to writing and

directing after a career as a cinematographer and music video director. His voice and point of view is unique, different and totally his own. But after a promising setup, the film meanders, trying and failing to find some sense of purpose with the two oddball characters and their rich back stories. But Ronnie and Ed just sort of listlessly bounce off each other, trying to make their relationship work despite their issues.

Despite the strange but winning chemistry between Danner and Lithgow, the script ultimately fails the fascinating characters. There are conversations, especially among Ed’s family — his son (Derek Cecil), daughterin-law (Katie Aselton) and granddaughter (Sophie Thatcher) — where it seems like everyone is

speaking in code, but to what end? There are whole swaths of inscrutable dialogue where one has to wonder if the characters are even speaking to each other, or if they’re aliens trying to mimic humanistic indie movie dialogue (think Lithgow’s “Third Rock From The Sun” character in a Sundance movie). This all lends itself to the sense of unease that permeates “The Tomorrow Man,” which can’t decide if it’s an apocalypse movie or a romance. That it lands somewhere in the middle is entirely fair, but never satisfies either movie that it’s trying to be.

In other films, Danner and Lithgow would each be the quirky half of a couple playing off a straight man, so casting the two together leads to some wonderful moments between the veteran

actors, stepping outside their comfort zone into something a little more offbeat. One thing’s for certain — Blythe Danner is pure magic. The actress can manage to make any material sing with her singular choices and sheer charisma.

There’s a vaguely sci-fi bent to “The Tomorrow Man,” but it’s less about the apocalypse itself and more about the fear of death, which is coming for us all, in sickness or in mushroom cloud. It takes a roundabout route to get to this overall message, and while Jones’ film gets a bit lost along the way, the film is nevertheless a distinctive debut for the filmmaker as a writer and director.

“Trial by Fire” — Convicted of starting a fire that killed three children, a Texas troublemaker (Jack O’Connell) gets help from a writer (Laura Dern) convinced of his innocence.

While this politically charged procedural features a number of standout performances and is on balance a solid, debate-inducing piece of filmmaking, it traffics in largely familiar territory. Biographical drama, R, 127 minutes. HHH “The Professor” — Johnny Depp plays an academic who learns he’s dying of cancer in a film that mistakes the title character’s snarky, smug, unfiltered persona for charm and charisma. Even though the tragicomedy clocks in at 91 minutes, the good professor starts wearing out his welcome well within the first hour. Comedy drama, R, 91 minutes. H½ “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” — The third installment of the ultraviolent, wonderfully askew “John Wick” franchise is the most outlandish and maybe the most entertaining chapter to date. Keanu Reeves returns, giving a classic deadpan performance in an escapist movie that encourages us to groan and cringe and laugh at the mayhem. Action thriller, R, 131 minutes. HHH “The Hustle” — Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson do their best to add zip and zest to a nearly laugh-free, unimaginative story about a pair of mismatched con artists duping superficial and incredibly stupid men. Even with a running time of 93 minutes, “The Hustle” felt about an hour too long.

Comedy, PG-13, 93 minutes. H “Charlie Says” — “Charlie Says” focuses on the efforts of a prison educator to understand three of Charles Manson’s most notorious disciples in the early 1970s, but about half the film is devoted to flashbacks to Manson’s reign over a group of lost and delusional sycophants. While well-intentioned and thoughtful, “Charlie Says” is too ambivalent and too safe to deliver much in the way of original insight.

Biographical drama, R, 111 minutes. HH “The Intruder” — Newcomers to a country home in Napa (Michael Ealy, Meagan Good) can’t seem to shake the menacing former owner (Dennis Quaid). Every single character in this film, including the villain, is irritatingly, maddeningly dumb. Drama/suspense, PG-13, 101 minutes. Zero stars “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile” — Zac Efron and Lily Collins star in this character study of the narcissistic killer Ted Bundy, who maintained his innocence for years, and Elizabeth Kloepfer, the woman who loved and wanted so much to believe him. This docudrama-style adaptation of Kloepfer’s memoir conveys a sense of authenticity and essential truth. Crime/drama, R, 109 minutes. HHH “Long Shot” — In a cheerfully raunchy, entertainingly weird slapstick comedy, a widely respected presidential candidate (Charlize Theron) begins an unlikely romance with her dorky new speechwriter (Seth Rogen). Of course he’s out of his league. That’s the launching point for the laughs. Comedy, R, 125 minutes. HHH “Family” — Like a latter-day Uncle Buck, tightly wound Kate (Taylor Schilling) is stuck watching over her 11-year-old niece, an outcast who runs away to an Insane Clown Posse festival. The refreshingly unfiltered coming-of-age comedy somehow manages to be funny, sweet and sentimental — AND paints a positive picture of the Juggalos. Comedy, R, 83 minutes. HHH

Danner, Lithgow find love late in life in ‘The Tomorrow Man’

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from movies and TV in recent years, it’s this: There is no age limit to falling in love.

A romantic subgenre has developed over the last few years in which older people fall in love — often to their own surprise — including the 2015 hit indie “I’ll See You in My Dreams” with Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott and the Jane Fonda-Lily Tomlin Netflix comedy “Grace and Frankie.”

Now, Tony and Emmy winners Danner and John Lithgow are struck

by Cupid’s arrow in the quirky independent comedy-drama “The Tomorrow Man.” In “The Tomorrow Man,” the first feature film from music video director Noble Jones, Lithgow plays a divorced retiree with a grown son who spends a lot of his time watching Fox News-style TV and preparing for the end of the world. Danner’s Ronnie is a sweet widower who works in a knickknack store and has been a hoarder since her infant daughter died years before.

“These are two people who really need somebody else to come into their lives and break them of this cycle,” Lithgow, who is currently on Broadway in “Hillary and Clinton,” said in a recent phone interview.

“And that’s what happens.

really change each other and move each other.”

In a separate phone interview, Danner noted that one of the main attractions of doing the film was to play people “who were so different from what we had ever played.”

“After these long years of working,” she said, “it’s such a gift to be able to do things that I haven’t done before.”

For decades, Danner, 76, and Lithgow, 73, have been trying to work together. They nearly did in 1980, when Lithgow was asked to appear opposite her in the Broadway production of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal.”

“Very stupidly, I turned it down because I had a committed to do a friend’s play off-Broadway,” Lithgow said. “My friend’s play was a huge

flop. I won’t even tell you the name. I was so tormented by my mistake.”

But fate had something even better in store for him. “Because of that, I was pretty available to do a very short job in Los Angeles, which I went and did. That was when I met my wife, Mary, of 38 years. It’s the opposite of a cautionary tale.”

Danner, who made her feature film debut more than 45 years ago, is pleased that she’s finally playing the female lead in movies. “I had to wait until my 70s to capture all these gorgeous men,” she said, laughing.

“I thought, ‘Oh, thank God. Here we are in our 70s, and I finally get to work with [John].”

Jones didn’t write Ed and Ronnie for the two actors. “I don’t really write for people,” the director said. “I have characters of people that pop up in my head and then you try to find the most appropriate person in the world to make sense.”

Lithgow was first cast

as Ed, and it was his and Danner’s mutual manager who suggested the actress.

“I have to be honest,” said Jones. “I was a little too dumb to realize how brilliant a choice she would be. In my head and my mind’s eye was someone a little more obvious.”

Obvious?

“I don’t know, maybe like a Kathy Bates from ‘Misery.’ That kind of overly quirky and odd.

I’m so glad that didn’t happen.”

Danner said she watched the A&E reality series “Hoarders” to help get into Ronnie’s mindset. “Clearly, she was wounded. I think in her case, it was just deep, deep grief. There’s one scene where I’m talking about my life to John in a restaurant. I thought it was funny, because he asks about my husband and I say, ‘Oh, no. He’s dead too,’ just off the cuff.’ I think grief shuts people down.”

“Ninety percent of love stories are about people

much, much younger than the two of them,” said Lithgow. “But they go through the same process of exploration.

Exploration of each other and exploration of themselves.”

Jones’ script, noted Lithgow, was unique and surprising. “It sort of surprises the main characters themselves, and that’s always a great thing. I just found these two people so intriguing and eccentric. And mysterious. I think it’s also fascinating to set a love story against the background of two people’s deep and genuine fears. Fears a lot of people share.”

Particularly in the case of Ed, whom Lithgow notes, “can’t stop thinking about the fact the world could end at any moment.”

“Whether we admit it or not, all of us are facing those issues,” he added.

“I thought that was very daring of Noble Jones to go right ahead and put that into play in the course of the love story.”
