NEW ON DVD THIS WEEK “ISN’T IT ROMANTIC”: Generally, Rebel Wilson gets cast in roles where much of her humor comes from pratfalls. While she’s good at physical comedy, she’s a talented comedian who can handle smart writing such as in this offering waiting to emerge.

Wilson plays the spunky and independent Natalie, a New York City architect who wants to get noticed at her job but is regularly overlooked. Things change when she is attacked in the subway and wakes up in a different world where she’s now the star of her own romantic comedy. This is a world where everyone is in love, sex only happens off-camera and there always is a stereotypical gay best friend.

Natalie is soon being wooed by the billionaire (Liam Hemsworth) who treated her like a servant in her other world. She initially likes the attention but soon longs to find a way to get back to her more cynical existence.

It is a pleasure to see Wilson finally be given a smart script. The jabs at all the elements of a rom-com could have been a little sharper, but overall, this is a sweet and fun comedy that works so well because of Wilson.

“HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD”: It has taken three movies over nearly 10 years to tell the complete story of Hiccup and Toothless. The third offering in the franchise continues to use beautiful imagery, but it is the tale that has lost its steam when it comes to the story.

it dealt with the unlikely friendship between a young Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon.

The second movie helped establish Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) as the village chief and ruler of Berk alongside Astrid (America Ferrera) and Toothless as the dragon leader of his own kind.

“Hidden World” is little more than an afterthought to get to an ending.

All the Vikings and dragons of Berk pack their bags and hit the road when they face the evil Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham). At the same time Toothless discovers his soul mate, Light Fury. This puts a strain on the friendship that has been the cornerstone of the series.

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is the weakest in

the series but remains strong enough to make it an acceptable end to the franchise.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE AND ODESZA MAKE TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO BELLINGHAM

Death Cab for Cutie and ODESZA, two bands that owe their start to Western Washington University, are returning to Bellingham for a onenight show.

The sold-out show, set for 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Civic Stadium, is the largest concert event in Whatcom County history, with an estimated 13,000 people expected to attend.

“Bellingham and WWU is where it all began,” said Death Cab for Cutie’s Nick Harmer in a news release from the university. “And as we have continued on, it’s been amazing to see and hear so much music continue to flow out of Bellingham too. So when we met ODESZA our bond of being ‘from Bellingham’ was an instant connection.”

“Bellingham has always held a special place for both of us,” ODESZA wrote on the group’s Twitter account.

“We are super excited to come back to the place where it all started and do a special benefit show with our friends and fellow alumni.”

ticket going to the endowment, DeWees said the concert is already guaranteed to bring in about $25,000.

Attendees also had the option to donate more to the endowment when they bought their ticket, and those contributions have yet to be tallied, she

said.

“It could be another $5,000, it could be another $20,000,” she said.

“The university is absolutely honored,” she said of the show. “This demonstrates that, truly, the relationships (the two bands) formed while at Western ... have a fond

ANACORTES — The Good Stuff Arts Gallery is bringing a collection to help ease the transition from winter to summer: the Rainy Day Series.

Acrylic artist Rebecca Parker created the series, which features the familiar imagery of pouring rain.

The gallery will also feature Parker’s “Bunny Love Series” and “Sometimes the Story Ends Series.”

Parker’s work focuses on the innocence of youth and the curious mind that accompanies it. All of her series revolve around children in the rain, children talking to their imaginary bunny friends and contemplating the end of a book they’ve just finished.

EVERETT — It’s time to kick off the music festival season, and Everett has it covered.

The Fisherman’s Village Music Festival is set for Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, throughout various venues in Everett.

The lineup includes performances from bands like Spooky Mansion, Death Valley Girls, Fretland, Weep Wave and many more. The festival also features a night market in the evenings for shopping, dining and, of course, more music.

The night market is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 17, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the corner of 33rd and Cedar streets. The night market is free to attend for all ages.

Three-day wristbands are available for $79. Some venues are restricted to ages 21 and over. Lineup and games, face painting and a kids’ concert from Brian Vogan and His Good Buddies will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

‘John Wick 3’ doesn’t break the violent action film formula

At this point, the words “John” and “Wick” used together signify something very specific. Mostly: sharply choreographed, creatively efficient violence. We know there will be a brooding Keanu Reeves killing dozens (only because he has to).

There will be eye-popping stunts and a network of sharply dressed assassins.

There will be gun fu.

Does “John Wick: Chapter Three – Parabellum” break the formula?

It most certainly does not.

Director Chad Stahelski wouldn’t dare. But you almost wish he would.

The film picks up directly after the second film ends, with a bloodied John (Reeves) running through the streets of New York, moments away from being declared “excommunicado” from secret assassin society the High Table for killing in the Continental Hotel. With a $14 million dollar bounty on his head, everyone in New York wants to kill John Wick, so now John Wick has to kill everyone in New York with whatever he has on hand.

Like most “John Wick” movies, the first two acts of “Parabellum” are a thrill of adrenaline and originality, the fights and stunts dreamed up by former action choreographer Stahelski escalating to increasingly absurd and

operatic heights. There is one jaw-dropping sequence with a book, and a scene with knives that renders all other knife fights meaningless. But like the other two “John Wick” movies, the third act is an interminable slog of violence that only leaves one feeling numb and number.

The film boasts four screenwriters — Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams — which is surprising, given the lean story. The film feels more like Stahelski’s reel of stunt work, with a few growled lines of dialogue from Wick and some crisp bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo exchanged between the representatives of the Continental and a stern High Table adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon), who has arrived to clear up the whole John Wick business.

There’s such a rich mythology in the emi-

nently stylish Wickiverse, but “Parabellum” barely scratches the surface.

We see a strange office, manned by rockabilly pinup-style secretaries with arms full of Sailor Jerry tattoos shouting out status updates while chalking them on a board. What’s that all about? John, seeking shelter, heads to an old theater where Anjelica Huston marshals a combination ballet/wrestling school and indicates John trained there as a youth.

But “Parabellum” frustratingly offers only morsels of the strange world that birthed him.

John Wick has an unstoppable will to live.

He only kills when he has to, in self-defense. But when you’re the world’s best assassin, with a huge bounty on your head, a lot of people are going to try and kill you. What keeps him going? That question is answered, to poetic and tragic ends, when

he says he lives simply to remember his wife and pup. Their memory lives in him, so if he lives, they live. That love keeps him going.

The startlingly emotional admission is the one thing that shakes up the predictable proceedings of “Parabellum,” and it matches the sorrowful soulfulness with which Reeves imbues his character. One can’t help but wonder if it’s inspired by the personal tragedies of his own life. In this ballet of bloodshed, this hail of headshots, this monsoon of murder, it’s easy to become desensitized. But Reeves always makes the more interesting choice — the harder choice — and he chooses to put the humanity of John Wick front and center.

“The Hustle” — Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson do their best to add zip and zest to a nearly laugh-free, unimaginative story about a pair of mismatched con artists duping superficial and incredibly stupid men. Even with a running time of 93 minutes, “The Hustle” felt about an hour too long.

H “Charlie Says” — “Charlie Says” focuses on the efforts of a prison educator to understand three of Charles Manson’s most notorious disciples in the early 1970s, but about half the film is devoted to flashbacks to Manson’s reign over a group of lost and delusional sycophants. While well-intentioned and thoughtful, “Charlie Says” is too ambivalent and too safe to deliver much in the way of original insight.

Biographical drama, R, 111 minutes. HH “The Intruder” — Newcomers to a country home in Napa (Michael Ealy, Meagan Good) can’t seem to shake the menacing former owner (Dennis Quaid). Every single character in this film, including the villain, is irritatingly, maddeningly dumb. Drama/suspense, PG-13, 101 minutes. Zero stars “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile” — Zac Efron and Lily Collins star in this character study of the narcissistic killer Ted Bundy, who maintained his innocence for years, and Elizabeth Kloepfer, the woman who loved and wanted so much to believe him. This docudrama-style adaptation of Kloepfer’s memoir conveys a sense of authenticity and essential truth. Crime/drama, R, 109 minutes. HHH “Long Shot” — In a cheerfully raunchy, entertainingly weird slapstick comedy, a widely respected presidential candidate (Charlize Theron) begins an unlikely romance with her dorky new speechwriter (Seth Rogen). Of course he’s out of his league. That’s the launching point for the laughs. Comedy, R, 125 minutes. HHH “Family” — Like a latter-day Uncle Buck, tightly wound Kate (Taylor Schilling) is stuck watching over her 11-year-old niece, an outcast who runs away to an Insane Clown Posse festival. The refreshingly unfiltered coming-of-age comedy somehow manages to be funny, sweet and sentimental — AND paints a positive picture of the Juggalos. Comedy, R, 83 minutes. HHH “Red Joan” — In a criminal waste of her talent, Dame Judi Dench plays a British matron accused of spying for the Russians in a story told mostly in flashback, with Sophie Cookson playing her younger self. It’s almost fascinating how stultifying this movie is, given the premise, but “Red Joan” is a soapy, clumsy, maddeningly simplistic mess. Spy biography, R, 101 minutes. HH “Stockholm” — Alternately farcical and intense and tragi-comic, this low-key version of “Dog Day Afternoon” is based on the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis that gave rise to the term “Stockholm syndrome.” Ethan Hawke plays the robber, and you’d be hard-pressed to cast someone better-suited to the role of a clearly doomed but still irresistible charmer. Crime comedy, R, 92 minutes. HHH “Avengers: Endgame” — Amid all the soaring and the blasting, this superhero adventure for the ages is a genuinely moving drama involving characters we’ve come to know and love. It’s a serious contender to be the best of the Marvel series and the undisputed champion when it comes to emotional punch. Superhero drama, PG-13, 182 minutes. HHHH

“Teen Spirit” — Like “The Karate Kid,” this endearing, cotton-candy-light confection of a film depicts a sensitive teenager learning from an unlikely mentor how to defeat more experienced competition. As the singer with big dreams, Elle Fanning is definitely good enough to make us believe her as a bona fide contender on a talent show.

“The Curse of La Llorona” — A hissing, pastyfaced zombie-ghost targets the children of a social worker (Linda Cardellini) in the latest addition to the Conjuring Universe.

But any hopes of a creepy horror gem are dashed by the overacting, clumsy plot machinations and cliche-riddled “Gotcha!” moments. Horror, R, 93 minutes. H½ “Fast Color” — In a bleak near future where water is in short supply, heroine Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is unable to harness her special abilities, and she feels cursed, not blessed. The tight and lean and smart and cool “Fast Color” works as a genuinely moving drama as well as an engrossing, supernatural-sci-fi mystery.

“Crypto” — This cryptocurrency thriller is one of those wonderfully convoluted guilty-pleasure actioners full of WTF moments, like Alexis Bledel singing “House of the Rising Sun” or a man being called “a piece of country candy.” And we haven’t even mentioned Kurt Russell as a potato farmer.

Thriller, R, 105 minutes.

HHH “Hellboy” — In an R-rated reboot, David Harbour disappears into the red skin, hulking physique and sawed-off horns of the monster hunter Hellboy.
