NEW ON DVD THIS WEEK “GOTHAM: THE COMPLETE SERIES”: The team behind the Fox series took a big gamble when the series launched in September 2014. They were betting viewers would be drawn to the story of Batman’s home city before Bruce Wayne decided to put on the cape and cowl to fight crime. What followed were five seasons of well-written stories where some of Batman’s most noted foes got the spotlight.

None rose to the occasion more than Robin Lord Taylor as The Penguin going from mistreated servant to mayor to super villain.

Taylor is the standout, but the series is filled with great performances by others playing familiar Batman characters including Cory Michael Smith as The Riddler and Camren Bicondova as Catwoman.

The show dealt more with the efforts of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) to keep the peace. McKenzie never portrayed Gordon as a typical officer, but as the surrogate Batman. In a pre-Batman Gotham City, there needed to be a prototype of the costumed hero who could be both a mentor to Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and moments wherein he would fail as an example of the wrong way to deal with the super criminals. That’s the job McKenzie did so well as Gordon.

Gordon had to face the same villains Batman would battle except without billions of dollars to buy fancy gadgets or vehicles. Through most of “Gotham,” Gordon only had his gun and badge, and both were taken away at various points.

If you can’t stand the idea of a series about Gotham City with Batman, the final episode goes right up to the point of Batman on the scene after a 10-year jump.

nice, but the cast showed each week they didn’t need the caped crusader.

If you own the first four seasons, “Gotham: The Complete Fifth and Final Season” is being released the same day. Either would be a super addition to a collection.

Independence Day is today, July 4; here are several suggestions to celebrate the United States’ birthday.

TODAY, JULY 4 ANACORTES n The annual Independence Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m., starting at the corner of Third Street and Commercial Avenue and ending at the Depot on R Avenue. The evening concludes with fireworks at dusk over Fidalgo Bay. Free admission. Prior to the parade, a town photo will be taken at 10 a.m. at Fifth Street and Commercial Avenue.

Anacortes residents are encouraged to participate n Rock the Dock 2019 presents a free community concert featuring The Walrus and Johnny Bulldog starting at 5 p.m. at Seafarers’ Memorial Park, 601 Seafarers Way, Anacortes.

BELLINGHAM n The Port of Bellingham, Haggen Food and Pharmacy and the Bellingham Whatcom Chamber of Commerce and Industry present the Haggen Family Fourth of July Festival at Zuanich Point Park. Festivities run from 1 to 10 p.m., culminating with evening fireworks over Bellingham Bay around 10:30 p.m. Activities include art and photo displays, arts and crafts, beer garden, kid zone, live music and more. haggen.com n The Chris Eger Band is playing from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Hotel Bellwether, 1 Bellwether Way, Bellingham, to celebrate the holiday. What better way to celebrate the nation’s independence than at an American Roots Concerts?

The American Roots Music Series is put on through the Washington State Parks Folk and Traditional Arts Program. It brings musical traditions from across America, and the occasional world music, to Deception Pass State Park every Saturday until Aug. 24.

Meshugga Daddies are kicking off the series with a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the North Beach Amphitheater at the park, 41020 Highway 20, Oak Harbor. Admission is free.

Essence Fest marks 25 years of celebrating black culture val has grown from a few exhibitions to a destination for Fortune 500 companies, top lecturers, business minds and CEOs, Sharpton said.

It’s grown from just an event to almost a pilgrimage. It’s the only place that you see the kinds of crowds ranging in age from grandmothers, to mothers to daughters to granddaughters,” he said.

NEW ORLEANS — The Essence Festival, which draws thousands to New Orleans during the fourth of July week, is celebrating 25 years of bringing African American women of all ages together for thought-provoking conversation and performances from top musical acts.

Launched to mark the 25th anniversary of black-owned Essence magazine, the festival has become a yearly celebration to highlight excellence in business, fashion, entertainment, and, of course, music.

It is a destination vacation for African American women, which was showcased in the 2017 hit movie “Girls Trip.” The movie —which starred Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish in a breakout role — centered on four longtime friends who reunited at Essence.

The festival is July 5-7 and has two parts: daytime activities and panel discussions mainly held at the convention center and nighttime music and concerts at the Superdome.

The Associated Press spoke to some performers and thought leaders who’ve made frequent appearances and to a relatively new performer who is moving up to the main stage this year about what they like about the festival and why they return.

She’s scheduled to take the main stage Saturday at the Superdome.

her album, “My Life.” It’s a milestone that “feels great.”

“It’s one of the most important albums of my career.

It’s when I started a relationship with my fans,” she said.

“I could tour on that album for the rest of my life and not make another song.”

Blige said she never doubted the festival would reach the quarter-century mark.

“It’s been nothing but huge since Day 1,” she said.

“People from all over the world and all walks of life flock to this big, black event.

Everyone’s coming to see what’s going on, to come to New Orleans, to eat. The food down there is crazy good and there’s a party every other night. There’s lots of entrepreneurship around, there’s gospel, there’s everything. It’s just phenomenal.”

Blige received BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award in June.

She and rapper Nas released a new single, “Thriving” in May. They both perform Saturday and will co-headline a tour that kicks off following the festival. Nas is also marking a 25th anniversary, for his debut record, “Illmatic.”

REV. AL SHARPTON Sharpton has attended and participated in every festival since its inception in 1994.

And, as a result, he said he stays on his toes.

“Everywhere I go, people tell me ‘I will see you at Essence,’” he said. “That forces me to think of a new speech every year.”

Sharpton generally appears during the daytime activities at the convention center. Festivalgoers can attend any number of panel discussions or presentations on issues such as politics, economic wealth, health care and entrepreneurship. He said the festival has become the “central meeting place for black people, black women specifically.”

“It’s a celebration of who we are and the diversity of us in terms of our talents and our gifts. It’s the perfect mix of entertainment and information,” he said.

Sharpton recalled when the magazine’s co-founder, Edward Lewis, started the project: “When I was on that first leadership panel at the first festival I thought, this was just a one-time thing.”

MAZE FEATURING FRANKIE BEVERLY This year the festival is paying tribute to one of its longtime stars: Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly.

For 15 years, Beverly and Maze closed the Essence Festival, often turning the Superdome floor into a sea of dancing fans. Beverly has an almost cult-like following with devoted fans who sing along with him. During a Maze performance, fans can be seen dancing in the aisles, many wearing white clothing as Beverly often does.

He says he’s always amazed to see how fans react.

“They don’t have to do that, but it shows they’re still into us and to still be in that position to do that, I’m moved and pleased by it. To be back this year is like getting with your family again,” he said.

Beverly’s run at the festival ended in 2010 when a new producer decided to end the long tradition of Maze as the closer. Many fans were disappointed despite the great talent tapped to close such as Beyonce, Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin and Earth, Wind and Fire. In 2015, Beverly returned for an appearance that coincided with the festival’s recognition of the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’ is a home run

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has a new spring in his step.

After the critical and commercial success of Sony’s third character reboot in Jon Watts’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the hallucinatory multiverse adventure of the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” things are looking pretty good for ol’ Spidey.

Tom Holland has given the character a spin that feels heartfelt and age-appropriate, while Marvel casting director Sarah Finn has surrounded him with a posse of affable pals who feel like real, modern teens.

With the high-profile addition of Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, can this Spidey strike gold twice? In the follow-up, “Spider-Man: Far from Home,” Watts and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers maintain the light, amusing tone. And once again, they hit a home run.

Peter Parker’s emotional journey in “Far from Home” is surprisingly uncomplicated, especially for a tale that becomes considerably more so.

After the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” all Peter wants is just to be a teen. That world-saving superhero stuff is too much pressure for the arachnid adolescent, who is still navigating high school life post-“blip” (what the teens dub Thanos’ snap).

Especially within the confines of the high school, the logic of the blip timeline never quite makes

sense, but “Far from Home” moves so quickly that if you just let the humor steamroll you, there’s no time or need to puzzle out the five-year discrepancy.

Although Peter tries to run from Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), persistent phone calls from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the long, looming legacy of his mentor, Iron Man/Tony Stark, his world-saving destiny catches up to him.

The world is starved for heroes, and Spider-Man is one of the few good ones.

As Peter sets off for a class trip to Europe, hoping for a romantic moment with sardonic queen MJ (Zendaya), he wrestles with whether or not to bring his suit.

It’s a good thing Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) sneaks it into his suitcase, after a water monster levels Venice with Peter and his classmates in it.

Spidey happily accepts an assist from Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), who sports a cape and nifty globe helmet like a 1950s underwater explorer.

The Italian news refers to this “mysterio” man, the teens take up the moniker, and Beck embraces the new name.

He’s a traveler from another “-verse,” a world-weary hero willing to fight the good fight and seemingly the answer to Peter’s prayers.

But things are not always as easy as they seem, and that’s a lesson Peter learns the hard way when he tries to give up his responsibility.

What was that that Uncle Ben used to always say about great power?

“Spider-Man: Far from Home” rips through a lively European tour from Italy to Prague and London, while Peter wrestles with his fate, in which he seems to have

no say.

This is a journey about Peter surrendering to his destiny, leaning in to what it means to be a “superhero” in the wake of the Avengers. If “Into the Spider-Verse” explored all the different ways to be Spider-Man, “Far from Home” dives into the heart of what it means to be hero, a responsibility that isn’t always easy. Good thing Spidey is one of the best.

HHHH “Late Night” — In this sweet and funny and insightful confection of a film, a new writer (Mindy Kaling) shakes up a stodgy talk show hosted by a veteran comedian (Emma Thompson). Nifty subplots help “Late Night” rise above the admittedly funny but sometimes predictable sitcom antics at the talk show. Comedy, R, 102 minutes. HHH “Shaft” — Nineteen years after Samuel L. Jackson played the nephew of ‘70s blaxploitation hero John Shaft (Richard Roundtree), both return in arguably the least memorable entry in the history of the franchise. The son (Jessie T. Usher) of Jackson’s character is the focus in a crass crime thriller played mostly for laughs that are few and far between. Comedy action, R, 111 minutes. HH “Men in Black: International” — This return to MIB headquarters introduces two new agents hunting extraterrestrials — a careless veteran (Chris Hemsworth) and a nerdy newcomer (Tessa Thompson). It has its moments, especially if you don’t realize some of the gags are just repeats from the 1997 original. But “MIBI” is just too jokey in its approach, especially in the way Hemsworth’s agent is portrayed as kind of a dope. Action comedy, PG-13, 115 minutes. HH “The Dead Don’t Die” — The dead are rising from their graves in Jim Jarmusch’s meta-zombie horror comedy, starring Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton and other luminaries. HHH “Dark Phoenix” — In this middling chapter of the “X-Men” series, the telekinetic Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) absorbs a mass of energy that makes her far stronger than ever before, but unable to control the force inside her.

‘Blue Note Records: Beyond The Notes’ celebrates legendary jazz label Jazz may be a quintessentially American art form, but it is Europeans who make some of the best jazz documentaries, with the captivating “Blue Note Records: Beyond The Notes” being the latest case in point.

Potently directed by Switzerland’s Sophie Huber, “Blue Note” is in fact the third European documentary in the last few years to have that legendary place, the ne plus ultra of jazz labels, as one of its major focuses.

Eric Friedler’s “It Must Schwing: The Blue Note Story” was a hit at Telluride last year and before that came “I Called Him Morgan,” Kaspar Collin’s knockout doc on Lee Morgan, a trumpeter with a tragic life who was a significant Blue Note artist.

All three films share components that can’t help but be involving, starting with music from many of the giants of jazz, players including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Horace Silver and more, all of whom recorded for Blue Note.

One of “Blue Note’s” secret weapons is the exceptional archive of photographs taken by Francis Wolff, who co-founded the label with Alfred Lion.

(The musicians puckishly called them “the animal brothers.”)

Key to making this film especially effective is its focus on the current incarnation of Blue Note, with the legendary producer and jazz fan Don Was as president.

While artists are not always articulate about their work, Blue Note’s jazz players do an exceptional job talking about their art

“Rocketman” — Hardly a standard showbiz biopic, this glitzy, ambitious and gorgeously appointed interpretive musical proves worthy of Elton John’s glorious artistry.

Taron Egerton delivers a powerful and resonant performance as the living music legend, and the film pulls no punches when focusing on Elton’s mercurial personality and deep dives into addiction. HHH½ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” — Five years after the world learned the hard way that supposedly mythic creatures are, in fact, real, everyone tries to figure out how to deal with them in a muddled and overlong

sequel. As we get mired in heavy-handed lectures about how humans are the REAL monsters, it’s all so ... serious.

Action fantasy, PG-13, 135 minutes. H½ “Brightburn” — The Breyers of Brightburn, Kansas, might be the dumbest couple in America. When a UFO crash-lands and they find an infant from outer space inside, rather than dialing 911, they take in the child and raise it as their own.

Horror, R, 90 minutes. H½ “The Souvenir” — In a stunning piece of work, Honor Swinton Byrne plays a filmmaker involved with a guy who will break her heart, help her piece it back together, and break it again.

Wayne Shorter, for instance, says that “the courage to be vulnerable is a challenge,” while Robert Glasper says “most of the great art comes out of messed-up situations. You just need something to be released from that, to go somewhere. That’s where jazz is born out of.”

Given that European

interest in jazz is so strong, one of the interesting aspects of the Blue Note story is that its founders, Lion and Wolff, met as fellow teenage fans in Germany who fled the country in the 1930s and founded the label in the U.S. in 1939.

Both men can be heard on a wonderful WBAI-FM radio interview talking

about their shared love of the music, something that never left them and helped them forge strong relationships with their artists.

In fact, unusual among label owners, they made records not to make money but simply because they wanted to hear them.

Creating hits was never something on their minds.

One charm of “Blue Note” is the stories the artists tell about each other, such as Monk’s band mates revealing that even they initially had trouble understanding his challenging music.

And there is Shorter’s view of Davis as someone who sometimes “wanted to play like he didn’t know how to play, who wanted music that didn’t sound like music.”

Aside from the musicians, “Blue Note” pays tribute to wizardly recording engineer Rudy

Van Gelder, who recorded many albums in his parents’ Hackensack, N.J., living room, and designer Reid Miles, who came up with album covers that were “all different but all looked like Blue Note.”

Though it had its economic ups and downs, Blue Note Records never totally went away, and one of its later incarnations got a big boost when vocalist Norah Jones was signed.

Also helping the label survive was the way hiphop artists began to sample classic jazz riffs, with the veteran Lou Donaldson quipping he found out about the trend by looking at his royalty statement.

“We want the generation of now to understand the music,” says pianist and Blue Note mainstay Glasper. This loving and involving documentary tribute helps bridge that gap.

stumbles along the way, Guy Ritchie’s live-action version of Disney’s “Aladdin” is on balance a colorful and lively adventure suitable for all ages
