NEW ON DVD THIS WEEK “Friends with Kids”: Best friends decide to have a baby together. Adam Scott stars. The film from writer/director/ star Jennifer Westfeldt takes one step further the concept of best friends having uncommitted sex. Best buds Jason (Scott) and Julie (Westfeldt) plan to have sex one time so they can conceive a child. They want offspring, but they also want to keep dating. They plan to share child-raising duties equally. It’s an idea that their friends — and the audience — know from the start just won’t work.

Both begin to get jealous of the other’s love life and that eventually affects their agreement.

“Lockout”: A rogue cop (Guy Pearce) must infiltrate a space prison to save the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace).

“Lockout” would be little more than a movie version of a second-tier video game without Guy Pearce. The irreverence, cockiness and bravado he brings to the character of Snow is almost electric enough to put this action film in the same league as “Die Hard.” Almost isn’t good enough, though. That means this tale of a rogue cop who battles impossible odds ends up more in the category of “Cobra.”

“Dan Vs.: The Complete First Season”: Animated series starring Curtis Armstrong as the voice of the volatile Dan, who thinks the world is against him.

Average-guy Dan goes against a wedding, dentist, gym, dinosaur and New Mexico, moving through a slow boil that eventually erupts into a comedic explosion. Armstrong’s voice is a key part of why the show works. He speaks for Dan with just enough creepiness to make the character interesting.

“Alphas: The Complete First Season”: The cable series follows a group of social misfits with extraordinary powers — known as Alphas — who work for the Department of Defense. That sounds cool, but while the crime fighters may be able to read minds or have super strength, they still work in the real world and have to deal with everything from curfews to feeding the parking meter. David Strathairn, an Oscar nominee for “Good Night, and Good Luck,” plays Dr. Leigh Rosen, a preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist who has put together a team of Alphas to deal with Alpha-related cases. This is a first-rate action series made better by the smart writing.

The Lido 14 was first designed in 1958 and has been in continuous production since, with about 6,300 boats. The Lido 14 offers affordability, longevity and appeal to a wide skill range of sailboat racers. It is the only one-design boat actively raced in Anacortes.

Nationally, the Lido fleet primarily resides west of the Mississippi, with the West Coast harboring numerous fleets in locations such as Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Ore., and California. There are also fleets based in Texas and Ohio, and

numerous individuals sail independently throughout the country.

Governed by the Lido 14 Class Association, Fleet 1 is located in Newport, Calif., while Fleet 78 calls Anacortes is home port.

Regatta chairman Steve Orsini is one of several local entrants in the national championship event.

He’s been sailing for years and said he’s looking forward to racing against some of the top Lido 14 captains in the country. He is the Lido 14 District VI champion.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said. “Especially since we get to

host the event.”

It wasn’t that Anacortes didn’t want to host the national championships; rather, Orsini said, it was the fact they didn’t have the infrastructure to do so.

“Now we have a dock as well as hoist,” he said. “So that makes it much, much easier to host an event like this. It is a really big deal. This is the first time we’ve hosted a national regatta and it’s something we’ve been working toward for 20 years.”

“Life Is Good” On the cover of his 10th album, “Life Is Good,” the urban troubadour known as Nas is dressed in a white suit, glumly holding his ex-wife Kelis’ green wedding dress — the only thing left behind after the couple’s publicly acrimonious divorce. By way of his art, Nas both washes his laundry in public and shows he has moved on.

Producers No I.D. and Salaam Remi give this very personal record an aura of nostalgia, a throwback to the golden age of hip-hop, by using classic beats. Collaborations with artists like Mary J. Blige, Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz and Nas’ solos arrange themselves into a coherent necklace made of discreet gems. Old mixes with new, noir enters the flow and the lyrics are tinged with both vulnerability and brutality.

Nas is the same master wordsmith as he was when he first bowled over critics with his 1994 debut “Illmatic.” He tackles thug life, chrematistics and the pursuit of status, yet shows signs of growth by considering more personal topics like parenthood, love and his relationship with his celebrity.

Songs like “Daughters,” where he raps about his own real-life parenting struggles with his teenage daughter, or “Bye Baby,” where he addresses the breakdown of his marriage and his subsequent bleeding heart, show a touching self-awareness.

“Cherry Wine” featuring the late Amy Winehouse paints him in a surprising light where he is unshackled by the stereotypical rap views of women. Nas manages to make a clean break with the past by submersing himself and us in it.

‘Spec Ops: The Line’

“Heart of Darkness” is my favorite book of all time. My friend Luke and I talk about it often and jokingly reminisce about a college professor who may or may not have said its themes were best discussed while taking peyote.

Discovering that “Spec Ops” follows a very similar narrative path. You play as Walker, one of three Delta Force soldiers trapped in Dubai when a massive sandstorm blankets the city and re-adjusts modern life. The city becomes a chaotic free-for-all. Channeling Joseph Conrad’s novel, you venture out into the desolate city in search of a missing general named Konrad (get it?), who disobeyed orders and may have sacrificed a battalion of troops.

Diving into the nitty-gritty of the game, “choppy as the sandy desert air” best describes the action. You battle a mix of vandals, rogue soldiers and other obstacles, often meeting little resistance. A few choices are presented to you. But the impact of them is never felt, and the campaign lasts less than 10 hours, so you’ll finish just as the weak-feeling guns start to leave you wanting something with more oomph.

Most of the game’s efforts seem focused on the online multiplayer, and welldesigned maps make for fun shootouts.

Luke and I often say that “Darkness” channels Nietzsche’s quote about man looking into the abyss, and “The Line” teases the gamer to have a similar experience. It unfortunately ends before you get to linger long enough on that moral question — instead, shuttling you off into the void of online shooters where deep meaning is lost in a hail of continuous gunfire.

More than a decade of publishing both the “Madden” and “NCAA” football franchises has left EA Sports in a death spin of repetition. Some kind of “new” addition is made to the NFL series, which then gets hyped as “new” for the following year’s college game. It leaves the franchises treading water.

Yes, EA has inserted the obligatory “enhancements” for this year, the most noticeable called the Heisman Challenge.

Pick a past Heisman winner (Doug Flutie, Barry Sanders, etc.) and re-create their experiences, but in today’s college game, and, in a huge twist, at any school you desire. Don’t think for a second I didn’t bring Sanders’ lightning-quick moves to Kentucky for a run at SEC glory. Entertaining? Yes. Completely illogical and leaving you often asking, “What’s the point?” Double-yes.

Sadly, outside of comically enrolling Flutie at Miami or Eddie George at Michigan, nothing really special happens here. The rest of the gameplay and modes remain almost unchanged, the chief offender being the Dynasty Mode. This remains a Sisyphean chore of slow menus and tedious actions that can only bore you beyond belief. I’m not sure if I can venture into this mode next year unless drastic moves make it ... oh, I dunno ... fun.

Outside of some spiffier player animations and a couple of visual tweaks, how many of us could differentiate between this and 2010’s edition? Football fans will still love it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not getting crusty and stale.

Historic North Carolina mountain lodge reborn

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — Not long after he and his brother bought the derelict Green Park Inn at auction, Steve Irace learned something that astonished him.

“If you looked in the lobby or the dining room or the bar, you saw the columns,” the Long Island, N.Y., native says. “Those columns are single pieces of solid American chestnut that run from floor to ceiling and beyond.”

With American chestnut selling for $12 a board foot on the collector lumber market, he realized the hotel “was worth more dead than alive.”

Luckily for the community, and for history buffs, that’s not why the brothers bought this “Grande Dame of the High Country.”

“We feel that we’re caretakers of a national treasure,” Irace said during a recent visit to this Victorian jewel, perched atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina. “We resurrected this property. We brought it back. We wouldn’t let it die.”

The property started as a boarding house in 1882. The bulk of the grand lodge you see today was constructed in 1891. When it opened, each room came equipped with an electric bell to summon attendants and running water — albeit, just a small spigot with which guests could fill their washbasins.

The lobby walls are lined with photographs of famous guests — Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover slept there, as did first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe and oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, America’s first billionaire.

Annie Oakley gave shooting lessons on what is now the inn’s parking lot, and Margaret Mitchell wrote a portion of “Gone With the Wind” during a sojourn there, Irace says with pride.

But there was a time, not so long ago, when the Green Park appeared headed for the scrap market.

By the May 2010 auction, the hotel was boarded up

and bankrupt. Its spindlerailing Queen Anne balconies were rotten and sagging, the steam heating system cold and leaking.

A man from nearby Deep Gap who had done painting for the Iraces told them it was up for sale. They were the only bidders.

The brothers call themselves hotel “affection-ados.”

This is the fourth historic hotel property they’ve rehabilitated (the others are in Florida and Vermont).

The hotel reopened in October 2010 with just 15 of the more than 80 rooms available for guests. That number has since more than tripled to 53 — 22 of them with balconies.

With their high ceilings and large windows, the

The luxuriously comfortable beds and other tasteful furnishings were all manufactured right here in the Tar Heel state, Irace says proudly.

The rooms no longer come with buzzers, but each is equipped with a large flat-screen television and complementary Wi-Fi. Vintage iron lighting fixtures use energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

“We could have made this like a bed and breakfast,

you know, and frou-frou and cutesy and put, you know, 24 pillows in every room and put chintz on chintz, and cute little knickknacks and gewgaws all over,” Irace says.

“If we did that, we would have to charge more for the rooms. And I wanted, if a working man wanted to come here and show his kids how Grandma used to vacation, I wanted him to have that option.”

The inn sits at 3,620 feet above sea level, across U.S.

“If you were to spill a drink on one half of the building, it would flow to the Mississippi River, in theory,” Irace says.

“And if you spilled a drink on the other half of the room, it would flow to the Atlantic Ocean.”

Like most historic properties, the Green Park is not without its tales of tragedy.

Laura Green, a member of the family that founded the place in the 19th century, hanged herself in Room 318, allegedly because her fiancee didn’t show up for her wedding day, Irace says.

“Haunted Wautauga County, North Carolina” has a chapter on the inn, although author Tim Bullard declares at the outset, “It is not haunted — repeat, not haunted.

But it sure looks like it is.”

Executive chef James Welch had stayed at the Green Park under its old management and “never, ever” thought he would someday be working there.

“Oh, it was disgusting,” says Welch, who got his start at 12, filleting chicken in his mother’s and grandmother’s Greensboro diner. “To be honest with you, I didn’t even want to take my clothes off to sleep in the bed.”

Welch, 47, a James Beardnominated chef, had done kitchen stints at Sheraton hotels in nearby Greensboro and Miami before coming to Blowing Rock 18 years ago to help open a restaurant.

He was looking for a new challenge when the Iraces recruited him to run the inn’s Laurel Room Restaurant.

They gutted the old kitchen, spent $500,000 to bring it up to code and opened it a year ago.

Welch and his staff turn out delicate appetizers — like mixed baby greens with raspberries, goat cheese and shaved chocolate — and hearty entrees such as braised lamb shank with wild mushroom risotto and gremolata.

And then there is his signature dish: Espresso-crusted, bittersweet chocolate-stuffed beef tenderloin with goat cheese pistachio au gratin, French beans and Bailey’s Irish Cream sauce. This dish came to him when, while drafting the next day’s menu, he discovered two Hershey’s kisses his daughters had given him that morning melting in his shirt pocket.

The dark side of a superhero flick

‘T

he Dark Knight Rises” leaves the fanciful early days of the superhero genre far behind and moves into a doom-shrouded, apocalyptic future that seems uncomfortably close to today’s headlines. As urban terrorism and class warfare envelop Gotham, and its infrastructure is ripped apart, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) emerges reluctantly from years of seclusion in Wayne Manor and faces a soulless villain as powerful as he is. The film begins slowly with a murky plot and too many new characters, but builds to a sensational climax.

The result, in Christopher Nolan’s conclusion to his Batman trilogy, is an ambitious superhero movie

with two surprises: It isn’t very much fun, and it doesn’t have very much Batman.

I’m thinkRoger ing of the Ebert over-thetop action sequences of the earlier films that had a subcurrent of humor, and the exhilarating performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. This movie is all serious drama, with a villain named Bane whose Hannibal Lecterish face-muzzle robs him of personality.

And although we see a good deal of Bruce Wayne, his alter-ego Batman makes only a few brief appearanc-

es before the all-out climax.

Bane, played by Tom Hardy in a performance evoking a homicidal pro wrestler, is a mystery because it’s hard to say what motivates him. He releases thousands of Gotham’s criminals in a scenario resembling the storming of the Bastille. As they face off against most of the city police force in street warfare, Bane’s goal seems to be the overthrow of the ruling classes. But this would prove little if his other plan (the nuclear annihilation of the city) succeeds.

Bane stages two other sensational set pieces, involving destroying the stock exchange and blowing up a football stadium, that seemed aimed at our society’s twin gods of

money and pro sports. No attempt is made to account for Bane’s funding and resources, and when it finally comes down to Bane and Batman going mano-amano during a street fight, it involves an anticlimactic fist-fight. He blows up the city’s bridges and to top that lands a right hook on Batman’s jaw?

Bane is the least charismatic of the Batman villains, but comes close to matching Bruce Wayne and Batman in screen time.

The film also supplies a heroic young cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), two potential romantic partners for Wayne, and lots of screen time for series regulars Alfred the butler (Michael Caine, remarkably effective in several trenchant scenes), Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and the genius inventor Fox (Morgan Freeman).

One of the women is the always enigmatic Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), and the other is Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard), a millionaire who may be able to rescue Wayne Enterprises after Bane’s stock market mischief wipes out Wayne financially. Catwoman is a freelance burglar who’s always looking

out for No. 1, and Miranda is a do-gooder environmentalist; both are drawn irresistibly to Wayne, who is not only still a bachelor but has spent the last eight years as a hermit, walled up in Wayne Manor with the loyal Alfred.

All of these characters and their activities produce stretches in the first half of the film during which, frankly, I was not entirely sure who was doing what and with which and to whom. The movie settles in for its sensational second half, however, although not everybody will be able to precisely explain the deep stone well where Bane imprisons Bruce Wayne.

The circular walls of this well represent a deadly climbing wall by which anyone can try to reach freedom, but few succeed.

The actual location is in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, and we get a glimpse of some zigzagging stairs that are unforgettably shown in “Baraka.” Turns out Bane was held there as a child.

This is a dark and heavy film; it tests the weight a superhero movie can bear.

That Nolan is able to combine civil anarchy, mass destruction and a Batcycle with exercise-ball tires is remarkable. That he does it without using 3-D is admirable. That much of it was shot in the 70mm IMAX format allows it to make that giant screen its own.

That it concludes the trilogy is inevitable; how much deeper can Nolan dig? It lacks the near-perfection of “The Dark Knight” (2008), it needs more clarity and a better villain, but it’s an honorable finale.

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” — Vowing vengeance after a vampire kills his mother, Abe Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) learns the skills of vampire-killing while a young law student in Springfield and goes on a murder spree, chopping off the heads of six vampires with the silver blade of his ax, which he can twirl like a baton. During the Civil War, the Union faces defeat because the vampires are fighting on the Confederate side, but Lincoln’ quick thinking and vampire expertise turns the tide of battle at Gettysburg. The movie handles these matters with straightforward seriousness, which may be the only way they could possibly work. Action fantasy, R, 105 minutes. HHH “Brave” — The new animation from Pixar poaches on traditional Disney territory.

Instead of such inventive stories as “Up” and “WALL-E,” we get a spunky princess, her mum the queen, her dad the gruff king, an old witch who lives in the woods and so on.

The artistry looks wonderful. Kids will probably love it, but parents will be disappointed if they’re hoping for another Pixar groundbreaker. Animated action, PG, 100 minutes.

HHH “Farewell, My Queen” — Opens on Bastille Day, July 14, 1789, and observes the events inside the royal palace of Versailles through the eyes and knowledge of Sidonie Laborde (Lea Seydoux), a poor young woman who is the official reader to Marie Antoinette (Diane Kruger). The servants learn of events in Paris by rumor and gossip, and in a few days see the majesty of the monarchy crumble. What will this mean for the servants? Drama, R, 99 minutes. HHH1⁄ 2 “Ice Age: Continental Drift” — Will perhaps be a delight for little kids, judging by their friendly reaction at a Saturday morning sneak preview I attended. Real little kids. I doubt their parents will enjoy it much, especially after shelling out the extra charge for the 3-D tickets. In this fourth outing for the franchise, familiar characters are joined by a few new ones as continental drift breaks up families and the 3-D threatens to give them whiplash as they zoom back and forth and up and down. Animated adventure, PG, 87 minutes. HH “Magic Mike” — Steven Soderbergh’s film is a crafty mixture of comedy, romance, melodrama and some remarkably well-staged strip routines involving hunky, good-looking guys. I have a feeling women will enjoy it more than men. Channing Tatum stars as the title character, Matthew McConaughey is the no-nonsense impresario, Alex Pettyfer is a kid recruited into the business, and Cody Horn is his protective sister. Starts as a backstage comedy, and enters darker realms. Comedy drama, R, 110 minutes. HHH1⁄ 2 “Savages” — Oliver Stone’s thriller involves a bloody war between two best buddies in Laguna Beach and the queen of a Mexican drug cartel. A return to form for Stone’s dark side, the movie is a battle between good and evil, except that everyone in it is evil -- but

some are less evil than others, and they all have their good sides. Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson are partners in growing primo pot, Blake Lively is the beach bunny they share, Salma Hayek is the queen of the cartel, Benicio Del Toro is her enforcer and John Travolta is a crooked FDA agent. Violent, ingenious, deceptive and funny, but not too funny. Crime thriller, R, 129 minutes. HHH1⁄ 2 “Snow White and the Huntsman” — Reinvents the legendary story in a film of astonishing beauty and imagination. It’s the last thing you would expect from a picture with this title. Starring Kristen Stewart, capable and plucky, as Snow White, and Charlize Theron as the evil Queen, with Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Sam Claflin as the loyal Prince William. Fantasy adventure, PG-13, 127 minutes. HHH1⁄ 2 “Take This Waltz” — Romantic triangle in a dreamy version of Toronto, involving Michelle Williams as the angelic wife of unpublished cookbook author Seth Rogen, and who is slowly and skillfully seduced by Luke Kirby, an artist and rickshaw puller. A little precious, and how do they afford that neighborhood?

Some realism comes in with Sarah Silverman as the husband’s alcoholic sister. Romantic drama, R, 116 minutes. HHH “Ted” — The funniest movie character so far this year is a stuffed teddy bear. And the best comedy screenplay so far is “Ted,” the saga of the bear’s friendship with a 35-yearold man-child. Mark Wahlberg stars as the teddy’s best friend, Mila Kunis is his longsuffering girlfriend, and director Seth McFarlane (“Family Guy”) does Ted’s potty-mouthed Beantown accent. The movie doesn’t run out of steam. McFarlane seems unwilling to stop after the first payoff of a scene and keeps embellishing. (Definitely not for kids.) Comedy, R, 106 minutes. HHH1⁄ 2 “The Amazing Spider-Man” — The SpiderMan franchise is back for a reboot only 10 years after its first picture and five years after the most recent one. This is a more thoughtful and carefully written remake of the 2002 original with more attention to the origin story of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have warm chemistry as Spidey and Gwen, and this new-generation Spidey is more impulsive and takes more chances; sometimes he leaps from buildings with no clear plan in mind. Co-starring Rhys Ifans as the city-destroying Lizard, Denis Leary as Gwen’s father the police captain, and Sally Field and Martin Sheen as Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Action, PG-13, 136 minutes.

HHH1⁄ 2 “Trishna” — The story of a beautiful woman who is cruelly mistreated by a cold-blooded man. Freida Pinto (“Slumdog Millionaire”) plays Trishna, a poor girl from rural India whose beauty attracts the eyes of a rich kid, Jay (Riz Ahmed) -- clueless, emotionally tone-deaf and stupid. Michael Winterbottom bases his film on the novel “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy. The class divisions in his view of India mirror those in Victorian England, and the realism of his film has a pitiless brutality. I felt such sympathy for Trishna. I felt such contempt for Jay. As a melodrama, “Trishna” builds a hypnotic force.
