For more than 118 years, Josephine Caring Community has been a cornerstone of care, compassion, and service in the Stanwood-Camano community. What began as a simple vision to care for aging residents has grown into one of the region’s most respected nonprofit organizations, serving individuals and families through every stage of life.
Josephine’s story began in 1908 when local farmer and shake mill owner John Hals donated $10,000 and 10 acres of land to establish a home for elderly residents in the Stanwood area. The organization was named in honor of his wife, Josephine Hals, who passed away due to complications from childbirth. Inspired by a desire to care for others, Hals created a legacy that continues to impact countless lives more than a century later.
Today, Josephine Caring Community remains dedicated to the same mission that guided its founding: providing compassionate, dignified care while strengthening the community it serves. Although the organization has evolved significantly over the years, its commitment to people has never changed.
What truly sets Josephine apart is its nonprofit status. Every decision is centered on serving residents, patients, children, and families rather than generating profits. This people-first approach has allowed the organization to develop a comprehensive continuum of care that addresses a wide range of community needs.
Josephine currently operates a 130-bed skilled nursing facility, 21 short-term rehabilitation beds for patients recovering after hospitalization, 57 assisted living apartments, and a newly opened 21-apartment memory care community designed specifically for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. In addition, the organization provides home health services and childcare and early learning programs, making it a valuable resource for families across generations.
Beyond its role as a healthcare provider, Josephine is also a major economic contributor to the Stanwood area. With
approximately 300 employees, the organization is the community’s second-largest employer, supporting hundreds of local families while delivering essential services.
The success and growth of Josephine Caring Community would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Stanwood-Camano community. For generations, local families have trusted Josephine with the care of their loved ones, while volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners have helped expand programs and services to meet changing needs.
Many residents know Josephine for its senior living and rehabilitation services, but fewer realize the organization’s significant role in providing Medicaid-supported
nursing home care. As one of the largest providers of nursing home Medicaid services in Washington State, Josephine helps ensure that high-quality care remains accessible regardless of a person’s financial circumstances. This commitment reflects the organization’s founding vision of serving those in need and caring for all members of the community.

Jesse Tanner, a Stanwood native, moved back from Las Vegas to care for his 90-year-old grandmother, Alice in 2017. For him, family is everything, and helping his grandmother during her time of need was a cherished experience.
As a seasoned hairdresser, makeup artist, and entertainer, Tanner saw a need for more entertainment options and a latenight gathering space in the area. From that vision, Beauty Bar Salon + Lounge was born in 2020. A place to get your hair done, enjoy a drink, and experience one of the area’s few late-night social scenes.
Today, with the help of his partner Casey, the business offers a vibrant atmosphere with a late-night happy hour. Open daily until 2 a.m., the lounge serves food late into the evening, while guests can enjoy a cocktail or beer while getting their hair styled or cut.
With support from the community, local volunteers have donated their time to help create a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for everyone. Known for blending salon services (until midnight), nightlife, entertainment, and community
engagement under one roof, Beauty Bar Salon + Lounge has become a destination unlike any other in the Stanwood-Camano area. Even pets are welcome to join in on the fun.
The business is also preparing to bring back its cabaret and charity shows, with a portion of proceeds benefiting local chari -
