A long history of bringing local news to the people of Kittitas County Daily Record PROFILE

Locals and visitors alike pass by something uniquely historic on the corner of Fourth and Main in downtown Ellensburg. The Daily Record, founded in 1883, sits to the north of Fourth Avenue. The Palace Café, founded in 1892, is on the south side of Fourth and the Fitterer’s Building, founded in 1896, sits across the street. That trio represents 397 years of local business service, dating back to when the Daily Record operated as the Kittitas Localizer. The Daily Record has a rich tradition, and though many things have changed over the years, the commitment to fair and balanced local news coverage continues to be the priority. From changing within the industry to changing views both culturally and philosophically, the Daily Record has adapted with the times as the years press on. In November 2017, Pioneer Newspapers sold its media division to the family-owned Adams Publishing Group, now known as Adams MultiMedia, based in

The Kittitas Localizer, the granddaddy to current operations, printed its first issue July 12, 1883, marking this as a steppingstone to 145 years of journalistic commitment. Washington Territory wouldn’t be admitted to the Union for another six years. Kittitas County government as an entity was months away, yet residents were kept abreast of current affairs with a local newspaper. Since 1883, the paper has seen its own fair share of changes. An early change came on July 4, 1889, after a fire destroyed most of the business district downtown, including the Kittitas Localizer office. Then-Publisher David J. Schnebly was able to utilize the presses at the Ellensburg Capitol at Fifth and Pearl to keep on printing. He was proud to announce that no issue was missed, and the paper had taken on a new name, the Ellensburg Localizer, according to a story on the paper’s

history in the 1983 Daily Record.

F. Dorsey Schnebly took over operations in 1898 before selling to Cascade Printing and Publishing in 1903. Cascade also owned the Cascade Miner in Roslyn and the Cle Elum Echo. J.C. Kaynor and William Zimmerman purchased the property and changed the name to the Evening Record in 1909.

The first edition under the new name was released on July 1, 1909. Kaynor, who was just 22 at the time, and Zimmerman had both been employed by the Seattle PostIntelligencer before purchasing the Record. Kaynor eventually bought out Zimmerman and published the newspaper for 50 years before selling it to James McGiffin in 1958.

On March 14, 1973, the paper dropped the word Ellensburg from the masthead going

with The Daily Record and added serving Kittitas County to better reflect its expanded coverage. The paper was one of the first to move into the computer age, an early adopter to install computers to replace typewriters.

In 1981, under the direction of Publisher John Ludtka, the Daily Record became the first newspaper to add a cable TV community information channel to its operation. Its online presence, printed edition, changes, adaptation and expansion are all part of the Daily Record’s rich heritage that dates back to before Washington statehood. As times continue to change, the Daily Record keeps pace with the growing interest in digital marketing and content.

How lovely it is to end up in your line of sight! October of 2025 marked my fifth anniversary as Nicole Prigge-Taylor of Coldwell Banker Central. As I reminisced over the journey, I found myself reflecting on a handful of my amazing mentors.

My first job ever was at The Gym. Israel Valencia took a chance on me as a very young, shy teenager. Under the tutelage of Israel and the managers, first Danielle Koss and later Dania Cochran, I learned how to apply my work ethic, break out of my shy shell (yes, I was shy – as hard as that may be to believe), and how to harness the magic that happens with sustained eye contact and meaningful conversation. Both Israel and Dania have a way of inspiring those around them and lighting up the rooms they are in, and I was lucky enough to witness this magic first hand day in and day out. Over the course of a decade, I went from the shy front desk worker, to the general manager who presided over every facet of the business. My journey to that point was filled with invaluable lessons taught to me by incredible mentors.

Next, I found myself under the wing of Richelle Winegar-

Higdon at Winegar’s Coffee and Ice Cream. If you can find someone with a better work ethic than Richelle, well, then I owe you a coffee. I thought I had a good work ethic and was generally organized when I started my five-year stint with Winegar’s. I had lots to learn, and learn I did! I came away with a love for systems, knowing how to dig deeper (and then deeper still), a true sense of urgency, and with an understanding of the passion that fuels a small business. During my time at Winegar’s I was also fortunate enough to work with a local legend; Rolf Williams of Jerrol’s. He pushed my mind in ways no mentor was able to prior, and I’ll always owe him a debt of gratitude.

My business and its guiding goal (donating $90K to local nonprofits by Jan. 1, 2032) wasn’t crafted in a fancy conference room or over cocktails in a lounge, but during the middle of the pandemic in my 1980s unfinished garage over the course of two hot summer days. Rolf stood on one side of the garage with a large white board propped against dust covered who-knowswhat (boxes, old cabinets, etc. You know…garage things) and an assortment of dry erase markers. I sat on the other side of

the garage. Together we perspired and beat up, broke down, and rebuilt my business vision, mission, and goals that guide everything I do to this day.

If we jump forward in time to now, I’m happy to say my business is centered around education, professionalism, clearly communicated expectations, and vulnerability. While many home buying and selling milestones are to welcome new life (think marriage, a growing family, etc.), just as many are marked by a shadow of grief (aging, divorce, relocation for work, empty nesting). Wherever you fall on this spectrum, thanks to some of the best mentors this valley has to offer, you’ll be held with great care.

A Local Dream Built on Hard Work, Family, and Quality

What began as a small family operation in a home butcher shop has grown into one of Ellensburg’s newest destinations for locally sourced meats and specialty products. Founded by Travis Kretschman in 2021, Wish Poosh Meat Co. was built from a lifelong passion for livestock, meat processing, and supporting local agriculture.

Growing up in Cle Elum, Kretschman learned the art of processing beef and pork alongside his father, who raised livestock for the family freezer. Those early experiences sparked an interest that eventually turned into a dream of owning a meat shop of his own. In 2021, he launched Wish Poosh Meat Co. from a small shop at his home, offering custom processing services for local ranchers, farmers, and hunters. Working nights and weekends while balancing family life,

Kretschman steadily built the business one customer at a time.

That hard work paid off on January 1, 2026, when Wish Poosh Meat Co. purchased Double Rafter Meats and opened its retail location in Ellensburg. Today, the shop offers a full retail case of locally raised beef and pork, along with smoked meats such as pepperoni, jerky, summer sausage, kielbasa, smoked chicken, and smoked cheese. Customers can also find bratwurst varieties, marinated meats, prepared meals, local eggs, raw milk, seasonings, and bulk beef orders. In addition to retail sales, the company continues to provide custom processing services for local livestock producers.

Anytime Fitness PROFILE

Anytime Fitness on Dolarway Road is not your average gym. “There’s nothing like watching fish jump and osprey’s hunt while you’re on the treadmill,” co-owner Jenny Kuenzli said. She and her husband, Denny, opened Aug. 18, 2008 and since, have hosted many fitness enthusiasts in a space with million dollar views.

As a massage therapist who taught spinning at Han’s Gym, Jenny Kuenzli always dreamed of owning her own gym. On paper, Bill Wolfenbarger and Henry Johnston should not have much in common. Wolfenbarger has spent most of his life in radio broadcasting. Johnston built his career in funeral service and today owns Johnston & Williams Funeral Home in Ellensburg. One is a veteran broadcaster with decades of experience behind microphones, transmitters, and radio stations. The other is a 40-year-old businessman whose day job involves helping families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Separated by nearly four decades in age and coming from very different professional backgrounds, they might seem like an unlikely partnership. Yet today, the two men share a common goal: ensuring local radio continues to have a place in Kittitas County.

Together, Wolfenbarger and Johnston are leading

the next chapter of KXLE Radio, one of Ellensburg’s longest-serving media institutions.

KXLE-AM first signed on the air on July 19, 1946, originally under the call letters KCOW. For generations, the station has provided local news, weather, sports, music, and community information. Like many smallmarket stations across America, however, radio has faced tremendous challenges as listening habits have changed and competition from streaming services and national media has grown.

Rather than scale back, Wolfenbarger and Johnston chose to invest.

Over the past year, listeners have begun seeing the results. KXLE has upgraded equipment, improved coverage, relocated to new studios in downtown Ellensburg, and renewed its commitment to serving the

As July 21 approaches, I find myself ref lecting on the past six years as the owner of Johnston & Williams Funeral Home – six years filled with deep gratitude and unwavering purpose.
