What inspired you to own and operate this business in Anacortes?
Growing up watching my stepdad run a small custom home building company gave me an appreciation for the passion he had for his job. After working different jobs for a few years after college, I thought I better get on with this dream, and I started looking for a small business of my own. Lopez Island Creamery popped up in my search so I contacted the owners, drove up to Anacortes, and learned a bit about ice cream. I quit my job and purchased Lopez Island Creamery, complete with one employee at the time. This all happened two weeks before my wedding. I figured I could impress my new in-laws another time.
What sets your business apart from others in the area?
Anyone can make a batch of good ice cream. But to make great ice cream consistently and at a fair price, that is the trick. We stand out as a business because of the people who make this business what it is. Our ice cream makers, pasteurizers, customer service, admin, warehouse, delivery drivers. We have the best team in the industry and it’s showcased in each scoop of ice cream we produce.
How has the Anacortes community supported your growth or success?
I feel like a broken record when as I write this but it’s important to remember that we would not be a company if it were not for local community and businesses making the conscious choice to support local business. We are so thankful to the Anacortes community. I think we would be hard pressed to find a
more supportive area to be in. What’s one thing you want more people to know about your business?
I want people to know we are actually making all the ice cream we sell here, in Anacortes. This is why we opened up our factory store in the first place. Our team does such an amazing job each day and it would be a crime not to try to find some way to showcase the magic.
What does being TOP 3 in the Best of Anacortes mean to you?
It’s an honor to operate a business in in such a great community. For the community to reciprocate the appreciation is icing on the cake. Sorry, sprinkles on the ice cream rather.

Burton Jewelers has had a wonderful tradition of fine jewelry and gifts in Anacortes for over 96 years.
They specialize in custom jewelry design, drawing from their extensive collection of diamonds and colored gems. They feature expert jewelry repair and restoration with their goldsmith in-house or through a vast network of high-quality workshops. In addition, the store offers in-house jewelry appraisals for insurance purposes, estate, and fair market value. The store features fine diamonds, white and fancy natural colors, and an extensive selection of fascinating “one-of-
a-kind” sculptured gemstones. They have an immense selection of engagement rings, birthstone jewelry, earrings, and pendants. Additionally, they have a vast selection of fine tableware, barware, and art glass. Inside the store is the Burton fine art gallery, with rotating shows of local artists.
The store was founded on March 1, 1930, by Phil D. Burton and carried forward by his son Doug Burton and daughter-in-law Laura (Salmon) Burton. Today the legacy continues even stronger with 3rd generation Philip G. Burton and his wife, Holly (Roskelley) Burton.
Philip Burton took gemological training in the late 80s, gem cutting in Germany in 1991, and achieved his title
of Registered Jeweler of the American Gem Society in 2003. Only 5% of finer independent jewelers are members of the AGS, and Philip takes continuing education and
testing annually to retain the title. In addition, AGS members sign a code of ethics pledge yearly to uphold honesty and transparency in the industry for consumer protection.

For Drs. Kari and Nick Wilson, opening their dental practice in Anacortes was more than a career move—it was a return home. Dr. Kari spent her childhood summers here while her father served as director of Walla Walla University’s Rosario Beach Marine Station. Years later, she and Dr. Nick met
