What landscaping services do you offer? We do hardscaping: retaining walls, patios (paver and flagstone), concrete, sod, artificial turf, yard cleanups, drainage, walkways and stair steps. We install new irrigation systems and fix existing ones for your lawn or garden beds, and we also install fences.

When is the best time of year to start a landscaping project? Spring is a great time to start irrigation systems to have them ready for summer. Sod installation, garden beds and landscaping in general are also great projects for spring. Summer is usually when we are the busiest; however, it’s a great time to start your paver and retaining wall projects. But winter is when you will get the best deals since work slows down and we offer great discounts.

How can landscaping increase my home’s value? A very clean front yard is very attractive and improves first impressions. A beautiful outdoor living area gives buyers a usable outdoor space, and having a drainage system in place gives you peace of mind and protects your home and yard.

What types of plants do you recommend for this climate? If you’re looking for privacy, the Emerald Green trees are your go-to, and rhododendrons and hydrangeas are fantastic for residential landscaping.

Depending on your project, you may need to apply a primer and account for one, two or even three coats of paint. Ensure you buy the correct amount of paint, especially if it’s a custom blend. Understanding Roofing Lingo etting a roofing estimate can feel G like reading a document in another language. Terms like “counterflashing,” “net free area” and “tear-off” get tossed around casually, but knowing what they mean can be the difference between a fair deal and an expensive surprise. Here’s a plain-English breakdown of the terms most likely to show up on your next proposal. Tear-Off vs. Overlay A tear-off means removing your existing shingles down to the decking before installing new ones — often recommended when there are multiple layers or the decking needs inspection. An overlay installs new shingles over the old ones. It’s cheaper upfront but adds weight and can hide underlying problems that a tear-off would expose. Projects For Your Budget N

20

$5,000 and under: Small updates A modest budget still goes a long way on focused projects. Small powder room or half-bath renovations start around $5,000 to $10,000, covering a new vanity and sink, updated toilet, fresh paint, a new lighting fixture and either retiling or refinishing existing surfaces, according to a 2026 renovation guide from Amerisave. At this level, cosmetic refreshes — paint, fixtures and flooring — are the priority, since light updates run $15 to $35 per square foot, per RSMeansbased cost data from CostToBuildHouse.com.

$10,000-$30,000: Full Bathroom or Kitchen Refresh Stepping up in budget opens the door to a complete bathroom remodel, which typically runs $6,500 to $28,000, according to HomeAdvisor. A midrange kitchen update, without moving plumbing or knocking out walls, also fits comfortably in this range.

Set Beautiful Boundaries

order gardens are the backdrop for B the rest of the yard and, properly done, add depth, dimension and color

to make the garden come alive. Ask your garden center experts about what works best in your growing zone and then look for these beauties to add to your borders. Pansies Pansies are the annual stars of the fall garden. They thrive in USDA zones 6-10 and come in just about any color you can imagine. Plus, they’re frost hardy. Plant them together for a mass of color or put individual plants into bare spots at the front for pops of color. Deadhead the plants regularly to keep them blooming.

Lupines If you’re looking for tall, structural color, look no further than the lupine. It’s a diverse family of more than 500 flowering perennials that bloom from spring to summer with fragrant blossoms. They’re hardy from zones 4-9, but may turn annual in warmer climates.

Black-Eyed Susans This native wildflower belongs to the sunflower family and looks like it with bright yellow petals around a strikingly dark center. It’s a droughttolerant plant that loves full sun and attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. They’re hardy in zones 3-9 and readily selfseed, meaning they’ll be back.

Agapanthus Agapanthus feature bright, purple or white blooms that arch up out of lime green leaves and are good for the middle tier of the border. They love heat and are hardy in zones 8-11 and prefer partial sunlight, especially in warmer, southern climates. They can stay evergreen through winter, adding interest even in colder months.

22

HOMEstyle & GARDEN AUTUMN 2026

Dahlias Dahlias come in a range of colors and branch out from tuberous roots that can be overwintered in place as long as the climate isn’t too cold (think zone 7 and up). They grow upright and, depending on the variation, can have contrasting foliage in addition to bright blooms. Plant them in a site with good drainage that gets full sun. They’re also container friendly.

Coneflower Otherwise known as echinacea, they have large, showy blooms with petals that push away from a large, vibrant center. They’re members of the daisy family and are native to North America. The flowers grow at the end of 2-4 foot stems, so put them toward the center or back of a border garden. They’re hardy in zones 3-9 and are adaptable to growing conditions across most of the U.S.

Q&A with Mount Vernon Carpet One Floor & Home Anna Rose | Skagit Publishing

I

s it time to remodel your bathroom? Kitchen ready for a new look? How’s that carpet doing — has it seen better days? At Mount Vernon Carpet One Floor & Home, experts are ready to help you find the perfect fit for your home. Customers can find options for nearly every room and every style, from carpet, luxury vinyl, laminate, hardwood and tile to cabinets, closets and countertops. Owner Nicole Oxos shares her best advice below. How do I choose the right flooring for my home? Start by thinking about how you actually live in each room. Do you have kids or pets? Is the space exposed to water, muddy shoes or heavy traffic? How much maintenance are you realistically willing to do? From there, consider comfort, style and budget. There really isn’t one flooring that is best for every home, or even every room in a home. We love helping customers find the right balance between something beautiful and something that will hold up to their real life. Bringing home samples and looking at them in your own lighting can also make a huge difference.

26

What flooring is best for homes with pets? We love laminate flooring for homes with pets. Today’s quality laminates are incredibly realistic, durable and resistant to scratches, scuffs and everyday wear. Many are also waterproof or water-resistant, which makes cleaning up muddy paws, spilled water bowls and accidents much less stressful. Luxury vinyl and tile are also excellent petfriendly choices. If you prefer carpet, look for a product specifically designed for pets, with strong stain protection and a quality cushion underneath. The best choice ultimately depends on the size and activity level of your pets, the room and how you want the floor to feel underfoot.

HOMEstyle & GARDEN AUTUMN 2026

goskagit.com

What’s the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring? Both can give you the look of wood or stone while being easier to maintain than the natural material, but they are constructed differently. Laminate often has a wood-based core with a highly realistic image and durable protective wear layer. It generally has a firmer feel underfoot and, in our opinion, some of today’s laminates offer one of the most convincing wood looks available. Luxury vinyl is typically made from resilient synthetic materials and is especially well suited for areas where moisture is a major concern. Many vinyl products are completely waterproof, making them popular for bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements. Laminate is often our favorite for its appearance, durability and value, while vinyl can be the better fit when waterproof performance is the top priority. How often should carpet be replaced? There isn’t a firm expiration date for carpet. Most carpet lasts somewhere between five and fifteen years, but quality, traffic, pets, maintenance and the type of carpet all make a big difference. Rather than replacing it based on age alone, look at how it is performing. Permanent stains, odors, matting, worn traffic paths or cushion that no longer feels supportive are better indicators that it may be time. Regular vacuuming and professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months can help extend its life considerably. What type of carpet is best for families? The best carpet for a family is one that balances comfort with durability and easy care. The softest carpet in the showroom is not automatically the best-performing carpet for a busy household. We typically look for a dense, resilient carpet with good stain protection and a strong warranty. Textured styles are also great at disguising footprints, vacuum marks and everyday life. A little tip, don’t overlook the cushion underneath! A quality carpet cushion plays a major role in how the carpet feels, performs and wears over time.

Oatmeal and Pumpkin Cookies Enjoyed with tea, coffee or a glass of milk, these delicious cookies taste perfectly autumnal! Ingredients (Makes 12 cookies) • 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 1 egg • 1 cup pumpkin puree • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/4 cups flour • 1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg • 1 pinch of salt

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Using a hand mixer, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, pumpkin puree and vanilla. Mix until well combined. 3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. 4. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix just enough to form a thick dough. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the baking sheet. Leave a little space between each cookie. 5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until the cookies are lightly golden around the edges. Let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Homemade Apple Butter Slowly simmered with autumnal spices, this apple butter can be spread on bread or enjoyed by the spoonful. Pure delight! Directions 1. Place the apple pieces and water in a large saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very tender. 2. Puree the apples in a food processor until smooth. Return the puree to the saucepan. Then, add the sugar, lemon juice, spices and salt. Mix well. 3. Cook over low heat, uncovered, for about an hour, or until the mixture thickens and turns a nice caramel color. Stir often to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan. 4. Pour the hot apple butter into sterilized jars, leaving a little more than a half inch of space at the top. Close the jars and refrigerate (keeps for about one month). 34
