Fair Time Beaver Tails and Blazing Trails A Message From Our Director

As I walk the worn paths near the livestock barns and breathe in the sweet mosaic of hay bales, pale ales, and beaver tails, I reflect on my 17 years as the director of Parks and Recreation-- recognizing that this is my final year of professional connectivity to the Skagit County Fair. I ruminate on images of the main stage filled with Elliott’s tricks, Wren’s schticks, and Wick’s limericks-- knowing that a turnover of talent will forever fill the air and the flourishing formula for Fair success will carry on, just as it has for more than one hundred years. The cogs may change but the Skagit Fair wheel keeps rolling and evolving. For me, this moment feels less like an ending and more like a respite along a trail. A place to pause, adjust the pack, and take that first uncertain step into something new.

Which brings me to a story about a man named Frank. Frank Smith retired from the National Park Service after three decades of hard-earned dirt under his boots and a coffee mug that proudly read “I survived Region 6.” Instead of buying a recliner or booking a cruise, Frank filled his mug full of coffee, pushed his old dog into his rickety pickup, pointed his hood ornament south, and drove until the dusty roads were filled with holes and the pale sandy beaches turned silent.

He landed in San Pancho, a sleepy fishing village on Mexico’s Pacific coast, where his retirement was supposed to be simple: fish, eat, nap, repeat. But change, like the tide, had other plans.

One night, while walking along the moonlit beach, Frank stumbled across a bale of Olive Ridley turtles laying eggs. Before the last turtle made it back to the surf, locals had already begun scooping up the eggs—a delicacy, hawked in cobblestone markets and ladled into plates at kitchen tables. Frank didn’t scold or shame the outdated customs of yesteryear. Instead, he taught. He visited classrooms, listened to stories, and helped a community rediscover the power of stewardship. Over time, egg by egg, Frank helped turn a quiet beach into a thriving sanctuary. Today, only one in ten nests are disturbed, and a modest plaque at the edge of town honors Frank’s turtle nursery and the millionth saved egg.

Frank didn’t plan to start a conservation movement in retirement. But change rarely asks for permission. It just shows up, sometimes disguised as a turtle in the night.

As I think about the Fair and what it’s meant to me and to this community, I can’t help but feel a bit like Frank. Not in the heroics or the plaque (though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a deepfried Oreo named in my honor), but in the quiet understanding that when one role ends, another might just be waiting to be discovered. It may not come with a title or a paycheck, but you never know what barn door is ready to open when another shuts.

The Skagit County Fair has always been a place where tradition and transition dance together. Where kids grow up showing pigs, then come back with their own kids. Where volunteers serve hot dogs for decades. Where change happens slowly—until it doesn’t.

So as you wander the fairgrounds this year, maybe pause near the old carousel or under the shade bearing trees. Think about your own trails, your own transitions. Because like Frank——you never really know when the next beginning will find you.

Even when the tide changes and the ride ends, the stage will forever churn up new talent and with the Fair spirit in tow, the music plays on.

Anacortes native and world-class magician, Elliott Hunter, is coming back to the Fair in 2025! Elliott is a multi-international award-winning magician and illusionist who headlines some of the most prestigious venues in North America, from the Magic Castle in Hollywood to private celebrity events and some of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships. His personable demeanor, contagious positivity, and undeniable passion make him one of the most versatile and sought-after performers working today. Through visual storytelling, Elliott has mastered the ability to connect with any audience in order to cultivate a meaningful and memorable entertainment experience. Whether you are 5 or 105, you will be wowed by The Magic of Elliott Hunter!

Elliott was just seven years old when he saw his very first magic show in the public library in Anacortes. Immediately after, he searched the book shelves, looking for any book about how to learn magic! He practiced daily and

performed his first magic shows that same year for his fourth-grade class talent show and the Anacortes Senior Center. Elliott graduated high school in 2016 with honors and decided to attend Cal Poly, SLO for their engineering program. He moved to California and took his show on the road! He would perform every weekend, doing his homework backstage between shows by flashlight. While in college, he coined the term “Re-Engineering Magic” as he combined his two passions. In June of 2021, Elliott graduated from Cal Poly with his bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering.

After graduation, he went straight into entertainment, spending 300 days of the year performing all around the world, primarily on cruise ships and 1,000+ seat arenas and theatres. Over the years, Elliott has expanded the show into an experience that appeals to a wide range of people and cultures. His illusion shows are a cast of 10 people from all around the world. “I t’s awesome that people from such different backgrounds can come together in unity to create a great show,” he shared.

His first time performing at the Skagit County Fair was all the way back in 2012, when he was a young

teen. This will be his 6th year performing at the fair (the last time was in 2021.) Elliott shared, “I t’s always a privilege to come home and the summers are unbeatable. I love coming back to spend time with family and every time I am at the Skagit County Fair I get to reconnect with people who came to my shows many years before. It’s the people that make the venue so special.” He continued, “Our shows at the Fair focus on magic that caters to people of all ages with a fast-paced punchy dynamic that will catch their attention as they walk by. We have also created a set of illusions that

allow people to join us part way through and still enjoy the show.”

Elliott spent time in the spring touring in Alaska and right after his performances at the Fair, he will be bringing a full theatrical show to the Lincoln Theatre on August 30th before heading back out to perform on a cruise ship. Said Elliott, “ The show at the Lincoln Theatre will be completely different than the show at the Fair. We’re doing what we can to bring some magic to the valley this summer.” Tickets can be purchased at www. ehuntermagic.com/lincoln or the Lincoln Theatre website.

Featured Latin Artist – Luis Coronel

Main Stage

Saturday: 8:45 p.m.

The Skagit County Fair is thrilled to welcome featured Latin artist, Luis Coronel, to the Main Stage on Saturday! Luis is known for his regional Mexican music style and has been recognized as one of the most successful and youngest artists in this genre in both the United States and Mexico. He is considered an artist who connects with his roots and the immigrant experience, as reflected in songs like Dentro De Mis Ojos, which addresses this theme. In addition to his music career, he has also expressed interest in television hosting.

Luis was born to Mexican parents in Tucson, Arizona, on February 3, 1996. His career in regional Mexican music took off quickly at the age of 16 when a video of him singing a song after a boxing match went viral on YouTube. The video caught the attention of an executive at Del Records who signed him and helped him release his debut album in 2013, Con La Frente En Alto. The album achieved great success, landing a spot on the Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart just three weeks after its release. With the release of his second album in 2014, Quiero Ser Tu Dueño, he became the youngest solo artist to reach number 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.

Luis has won several awards, including a Premio Tu Mundo, a Billboard Latin Music Award, and a Premio Lo Nuestro, among others. He has also received multiple award nominations, including Premios Juventud and Premios de la Calle. In 2020, he launched his own company, which allowed him to continue sharing his music with the world.

This free STEM exhibit offers all day, hands-on entertainment for the whole family with a wide range of fun, exciting games and puzzles! It will also be a space within the Fair that people can slow down, relax and then go back out and enjoy the rest of the Fair. From brain teasers to classic games - there is something for everyone. Puzzlemania is STEM at its best!

This dynamic exhibit offers a fresh twist on traditional puzzles, blending fun, challenge, and creativity for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re untangling a tricky distanglement puzzle or testing your skills with geometric shapes, there’s something here to engage every level of puzzler.

Puzzlemania is more than just fun – it brings STEM concepts to life—encouraging spatial reasoning, geometry, identifying patterns, sequencing, problem solving, visual perception, and critical thinking through hands-on play. Said Owner, Tammie Wood, “Puzzlemania provides the opportunity for families to play and learn together. We often call it “sneaky learning” because it’s so much fun.” And if games aren’t your thing, don’t worry! Grab a seat, relax, and enjoy watching your family dive into some friendly, brain-boosting competition.

Puzzlemania is operated by Tammie under its parent company, Super Science Company, which she founded over 18 years ago. Tammie began her career as a middle school science teacher and worked at a science museum for 18 years before starting Super Science Company and her first exhibit called “Fun with Physics.” She shared, “I enjoy learning by doing and the informal education style of Puzzlemania and the other educational exhibits we have created. We are based out of central Oregon and bring our in-house designed and custom-built family-based attractions to county and state fairs, festivals, and private events mostly up and down the West Coast. We love small hometown fairs! Over the years, we have also conducted educational school assembly programs and outreach museum programs.”

We hope your whole family will get into this exhibit at the Fair! Learn more at https://supersciencecompany. com/puzzlemania or follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/supersciencecompany.

4-H YOUTH PROGRAMS

The 4-H youth program is volunteer driven and community based; it was started at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the future of rural youth. It consists of a community of more than six million members from ages nine through nineteen and 60 million alumni from across America.

Skagit county 4-H celebrated the 100th anniversary in 2022 of having clubs in the county. The clubs emphasize learning, leadership/life skills, healthy living, citizenship and science through classes, hands-on projects, and community service. Youth can choose from a variety of projects in the areas of technology, human sciences, large and small animals, science and engineering, natural resources, and citizenship and leadership.

Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences, travel the world, become involved in their community through service, develop healthy youth/adult partnerships and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting. In Skagit County, 300 youth are organized into 23 clubs and mentored by 60 adult volunteer Leaders. Adult volunteers are screened and trained to mentor youth in the projects the youth is interested in.

Children ages 5- 18 can join 4-H; visiting with leaders and members at the fair is a great way to find a good fit for an individual’s interests. 4-H members can compete with their projects in contests at the local, state, regional, or national levels and also attend conferences and events. 4-H has four Essential Elements: Belonging, Generosity, Mastery, and Independence. These topics give youth a safe place to “Learn as they Do”, generate positive youth/adult partnerships, and feel a part of a bigger community. The 4-H motto is “Making the Best Better”. You will see these values reflected in the youth when you take time to visit and talk with 4-H members at the fair.

Member enrollment begins each fall in October, if you are interested in joining 4-H please contact smoulton@wsu.edu

4-H thrives in Skagit County due to incredible support from

the Skagit County community. The generosity of our community enables Skagit County 4-H to continue our mission in raising responsible, thoughtful and generous leaders for our future.

4-H EXHIBITS AND CONTESTS

The 4-H building (Building A) is full of interesting still-life exhibits and 4-H in Action demonstrations. Building C houses the dog project and show ring, dog projects show in obedience and agility through an obstacle course; handlers exhibit dogs both on and off leash. The Pavilion barn is the home of livestock projects; Dairy, Beef and along with an exhibition of Shooting Sports. Goats and Sheep are housed and shown across the fairgrounds in Building F. Building E is the Small Animal Barn, this barn fills up with Rabbit, Cavy, Cat and Poultry projects. The Horse barns and the Horse arena is busy all day with many different horse performances. The Skagit Junior Livestock Show will be held the Livestock Pavilion on Saturday morning. This is where animals raised for market are auctioned off, anyone can bid! Come early for a bidder number. This is a great opportunity to support 4-H and FFA members.

Take a look at the enclosed schedule for many different activities and contests going on at the Fair this year!

THE SKAGIT COUNTY JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SALE

FFA

Future Farmers of America was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928, their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. Today, now called the National FFA Organization, is not just for students who want to be production farmers, it also welcomes members who aspire to careers in agriculture as teachers, doctors, scientist, business owners and more. For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the industry of agriculture.

The National FFA Organization now has 1,027,273 members in 9,235 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization is part of the high school courses in the food, fiber and natural resources industry including animal science, horticulture, agricultural mechanics and natural resources.

The FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” and the chapter’s activities are planned to help students do all of this.

Skagit County has four FFA chapters:

The Burlington-Edison FFA chapter has a long tradition of involving its members in the many different facets of agriculture that the Skagit Valley area has to offer. Students take pride in exhibiting their various projects at the fair each summer, and during the school year are involved in everything from Trapshooting, Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems, Floriculture and Nursery Landscape, Veterinary Science, Food Science and Leadership training in many different ways.

as veterinary science and trapshooting activities. Their activities are about getting outdoors - whether it’s to tend to animals, practice for competitions, or explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The chapter emphasizes leadership and personal development through action and involvement and we strive to offer members as many new and exciting experiences as possible.

Mount Vernon Christian High School is the newest chapter in Skagit County. Students are involved in Veterinary Science, Dairy Cattle, Milk Quality and Products Evaluation, and Environmental Natural Resources.

Come and see the FFA club members in:

• Dairy Cattle

Mount Vernon FFA is one of the first five chapters in Washington State! We’re also the home to the first female National FFA Officer, Julie Smiley. Throughout the year our chapter is dedicated to community service and leadership; we work on projects with Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, Skagit County Farm Bureau, and other organizations. Besides animal projects, students participate in Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems and Veterinary Science competitions and their activities include many options for students to practice their leadership skills in the community.

Dorothy’s Next Chapter: From 4-H Coordinator to

After nearly 11 years (3,993 days!) as Skagit County’s 4-H Program Coordinator, Dorothy Elsner is starting a new chapter –but don’t worry! She isn’t straying too far as she has joined the reestablished Skagit County Fair Advisory Board.

Dorothy’s roots in 4-H go deep. Raised on a cattle ranch in Yavapai County, Arizona, she showed swine and beef and pursued every leadership opportunity she could, including a trip to National 4-H Congress in Chicago. That early passion for youth development stayed with her through decades of service in Skagit County.

She first joined the Skagit County Fair community in 1999 as a 4-H mom, then became a club leader for the Valley Green Acres club in 2002. As coordinator, she guided thousands of youth, some from their first Cloverbud years through high school graduation—and many of those former members are now 4-H leaders themselves.

“Watching kids grow from Cloverbuds through their senior year is something special,” she says. “Some of those same kids are now leading clubs of their own. That kind of full-circle moment—it’s what 4-H is all about.”

Now, she’s bringing her experience to the Fair Advisory Board. “Skagit County has something really special,” she says. “The teamwork, the families, the support—it’s a community I’m proud to keep serving.”

This year, she’s especially excited to watch her successor, Nicole Jones, step into the coordinator role and, of course, to enjoy her Fair favorites: Ice cream and sharing fries with friends!

Though her title may have changed, Dorothy’s dedication hasn’t. The fair is lucky to have her, and she’s not going anywhere.

STOCK DOGS: The Farmer’s Friend

Herding dogs are invaluable on the farm. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs whose natural instincts are to gather a herd and move it to please their human handlers. They have been bred to have incredible endurance and enthusiasm for working stock.

This exhibition will show stock dog working fundamentals as dogs run sheep through obstacles as they herd them into a pen. Jan communicates with her dogs through whistles or voice commands. This is a true showcase of the partnership between the handler and their dog! Jan’s dogs help her demonstrate the different skills that working dogs bring ro the job: strength, biddability, and intelligence.

Jan Wesen has a B.S. in Dairy Science and lives in Bow, Washington where she and husband Rod work their dogs on their organic 600 cow dairy farm. Jan judges, competes and teaches herding clinics internationally and throughout the US.
