Welcome to the

35th Anniversary of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival! Marking the 35th anniversary of this special agricultural event, the 2018 Tulip Festival kicks off on Thursday, March 29, with the Gala presented by Judd & Black Appliance and Peoples Bank. To help celebrate the milestone “We are working on telling the story of 35 years of tulips,” said the festival’s Executive President Cindy Verge. A student intern is producing a video chronicling the festival from foundation to present and the festival’s marketing team is encouraging Tulip Festival enthusiasts to share past favorite posters, memories and pictures on the official Facebook page. Visitors are also encouraged to participate in the 2018 Photo Contest sponsored by North Coast Credit Union; winners in each category will receive a signed 2018 Official Tulip Festival poster. Skagit Valley welcomes tourists from all 50 states and countries all over the world each spring to enjoy hundreds of acres of colorful blooms. Visitors are greeted with a wide array of activities for the whole family, spread throughout the area over the month of April. In 2017, people came from eight Canadian provinces, every state, and 95 other countries! The busigoskagit.com

est day was Easter Sunday when over 1,300 people visited the fields with a weekend total of over 2,500. Over the years the Tulip Festival has received many accolades. Last year SCRAPS, a new A & E show about cooking with what might otherwise be waste, filmed in the tulip fields. The show aired in the summer of 2017. The mission of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is to coordinate and promote a countywide spring celebration of the tulip bloom, in commemoration of the valley’s annual tulip harvest and to be an advocate for Skagit Valley agriculture. “The festival wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers and sponsors,” said Verge. The Tulip Festival depends on hundreds of donated hours from students and other community members and sponsorship money from more than 200 local

businesses and organizations. During April of last year, the festival had 28 community volunteers donate some 500 hours, plus several hours donated by local high school students and staff at 12 Fortiphi, one of the newer sponsors. The volunteer program enjoys moral and financial support from Creekside Continuing Care Community in Burlington. Local media also plays a big role in getting the word out about the festival including Skagit Publishing that doubles as a sponsor.

Tulip Festival History In the early 1980s, then Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce directors Jerry Digerness and Joan Houchen recognized that thousands of people were coming to visit the tulips of Skagit Valley. They decided to form the official Tulip Festival and created a weekend of events and festivities meant to entice and enhance visitors’ trips to the area during the month of April. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was officially inaugurated by the chamber in 1984 and was run through that office until 1994 when the festival became its own entity. In 2002,

separation from the chamber was completed when the organization moved to its own offices. Cindy Verge has been working for the Tulip Festival since 1999 and has been its executive director since 2003, working alongside a 19 person volunteer board of directors. She has a BA in Communications from the UW. In addition, Cindy has earned the title “Certified Festival and Event Executive” from the International Festival & Events Association (IFEA). Over the decades the festival has grown in length. The event began as a three day weekend; jumped to 10 days, then 17 and has been a full 30 days since 2003. With the unpredictability of the weather, the full 30 days means that the tulips have a greater chance of blooming during the festival.

dation and ongoing success of the festival from festival founders, tulip growers and a past president.

Tulip Festival College Internships

Social Media

Tulip Festival college interns play an important role in each festival. “Our student interns take care of projects that we need done while gaining work experience relevant to their studies,” said Cindy Verge. Megan Fox from the Multimedia program at Skagit Valley College worked on designing the Tulip Ambassador Event program. She also took pictures of tulip fields in all their stages (from soil to full bloom) to be posted to the official website. Marissa Conklin from Running Start and the Journalism/Multimedia program at the Burlington-Edison High School produced a video to commemorate 35 years of the Tulip Festival. To accomplish this she interviewed over a dozen people who have been integral to the foun4

Rayleen Hall from the Multimedia program at Skagit Valley College designed the 2018 Gala invitation. The Tulip Festival would welcome a spring intern as well. The official website and Facebook pages have become integral to the festival’s ongoing success. Skagit Publishing supports the Tulip Festival by creating, hosting and maintaining the festival’s mobilefriendly, official website. Activity on the website remains strong, with 443,375 unique users generating just over 1.6 million page views in the past year. Visits from mobile devices continue to rise, accounting for over 70 percent of the traffic. Said Cindy, “We have had a tremendous response to our new mobile-friendly website so we are working on adding more points to the interactive map and keeping the website fresh and relevant with updated pictures and events.” Sponsored by Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railway, the map has points linking users to loca-

tions, hours and websites of some of the event’s sponsors. Facebook exposure continues to grow, with over 53,000 followers to the official page. The page is used throughout the year to welcome new sponsors, share information about events in the Skagit Valley and keep festival enthusiasts informed about the flower fields. During April the page is very active as fans post pictures, respond to posts and check in with the Tulip Festival. Particularly popular during the 2017 festival were almost daily updates on how the blooms were doing, changes to the hours for tulip fields and travel tips.

What to See & Do The 2018 Tulip Festival will run from April 1-30 but with warmer temperatures back the tulips could begin blooming the last week of March. Tulipfestival.org has a wide range of information to help you navigate the festival including a calendar of events, maps and places to stay, eat and shop. Said Cindy, “We are always working to keep the festival current and

2018 Official Poster The Tulip Festival officially begins in November; at the official poster unveiling celebration at Skagit Valley Gardens. Sponsored by Heritage Bank, the event is the first opportunity to see the new poster and products for the upcoming Tulip Festival. Each year a committee of community volunteers selects a local artist to create an official poster, which is unique to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Local artists submit their applications and the winner is free to choose their medium and style in a way that will interpret their vision of the festival and the tulips of Skagit Valley. In a testament to the quality of the art, the 2017 poster received the Gold Pinnacle award from the International Festival & Events Association. Woodinvile artist Melissa Jander was chosen to create the 2018 official poster. I do quick sketches and paintings out in the fields; and take photos as well in all kinds of weather. The sunny days are great for the contrasts in light and shadow, but overcast days can’t be beat for seeing the powerful, rich color of those blooms. Then at home I combine my resource material into an idea for a painting. It starts with several sketches and composition ideas, then after deciding on a favorite I do a larger sketch and move it onto a larger canvas or panel.” When asked how she felt about being chosen to paint the poster for the 35th anniversary she replied, “Gosh, continued on page 12

I was so thrilled to be invited to paint the 35th anniversary poster! I have hoped to contribute to the SVTF poster in some way for many years… but it took a long time of learning skills, practice, and life experience before the time was right to pursue it further. The tulips are spread throughout the Skagit Valley in rotating fields a few miles apart so you will want to take a driving tour to see them all. With warmer temperatures returning this year, tulips may begin blooming the last week of March but generally there are tulips blooming through the month of April. The festival’s biggest tulip suppliers, RoozenGaarde/Washington Bulb Co., Inc. and Tulip Town, both offer artistic tulip displays in their show gardens and carry deep roots in tulip growing stemming back to their family ancestries in Holland.

RoozenGaarde grows tulips year round inside 15 acres of greenhouses with tours open all year. Tulip Festival hours are 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily through April or when the tulips stop blooming. and the always popular flowering rivers of deep blue muscari! A 25-acre tulip field and 22-acre daffodil field sit next to the display garden. Festival admission is $7 per person, $6 with military I.D., free for kids five and under. Parking is free: the lot is on Beaver Marsh Road. RoozenGaarde also operates official pay parking located by the tulip fields. Parking in official pay lots is included with a paid RoozenGaarde admission (show your ticket stub) OR if you park in an Official PAY lot, the ticket stub is good for one admission to RoozenGaarde. (Admission/parking must all occur on the same day.) Don’t forget the gift shop and fresh cut flowers. Please visit tulips.com for more company information.

RoozenGaarde History Washington Bulb Company was purchased by William Roozen in 1955 from two of the area’s original bulb growers. He had emigrated from Holland in 1947 with years of tulip bulb experience and dreams of growing a flourishing bulb business in America. William’s skills were a family tradition;

the Roozens had been tulip farmers for at least six generations dating back to the 1700s. In 1985, William Roozen handed the business down to his five sons and a daughter, who passed away in 1996. William Roozen passed away on July 13, 2002, with five sons and 35 grandchildren to keep the business in the family. His five sons are the company principles.

The company ships over 70 million cut flowers and tens of millions of tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and other specialty

Today the business farms about 2,000 acres of land including other crops such as daffodils, iris and wheat.

Tulip Town Owned and operated by longtime Skagit Valley tulip growers Tom and Jeannette DeGoede, Tulip Town is the second largest tulip supplier for the Tulip Festival. The 2018 show gardens will officially open to the public Saturday, April 1, but with indications that blooms may be ready the last week of March the gardens could open early. Tulip Town History Tom DeGoede emigrated from Holland to Canada in 1956. He moved to Mount Vernon in 1957 where he joined his brothers Henry and John; Tom married his wife Jeannette in 1960. DeGoede managed the Neal Noorlag Bulb Farm until 1983 when he and Jeannette purchased the business; now known as ‘Lil Tulip Town. Tulip Town sold the first official Skagit Valley tulips to the public shortly afterward with a borrowed strawberry stand. Over the years, more and more people took notice of their flowers and began driving

from Seattle and beyond to walk the fields and buy the colorful blooms. As traffic grew, law enforcement gave the business a push to build a parking lot. A 500 car parking lot full of beautiful agriculture was built on the farm in

2001; espalier apple, pear and cherry trees serve as car dividers. The DeGoede’s have four grown children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; many of whom participate in Tulip Town.

Economic Boost to County The local tourism industry looks forward to the month of April with crowds of 250,000 to 400,000 coming to see the tulip blooms each year; an estimated 75 percent come from outside the area. With an average group size of three people, local restaurants, lodging and shops all benefit. In order to assess the economic impact that the Tulip Festival has on the businesses in Skagit County, festival officials contracted with the International Festival and Events Association to conduct a study of the 2012 festival. These results combined with yearly sales tax revenue indicate a sizeable economic boost to the county over the month of April. The main takeaway

is that 84 percent of surveyed respondents reported that the Tulip Festival was the primary reason for their trip to Skagit County in April. Each year

the sales tax collected over the month of April increases dramatically from other months in the year. In 2017, sales tax collected in April jumped by 26

percent. Another important takeaway was that eight percent of festival guests spent an average of two nights in local lodging. This translated to large gains in lodging tax revenues, with SedroWoolley and Anacortes showing a 44% and 47% gain respectively. “This study highlights some things we’ve long known; that the Tulip Festival is a major player in bringing new revenue to our area. We anticipate even greater attendance in 2018 as we celebrate our 35th annual festival,” said Cindy Verge, Executive Director of the Festival. Skagit County business owners sometimes refer to the accompanying economic boost as “Christmas in April”; cross promotion is common as local businesses and organizations use the festival’s draw to attract people to

their events. Local charitable organizations also greatly benefit from their ties to the Tulip Festival. Charities such as the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon who hosts an annual Salmon Barbecue and the La Conner Rotary Club who sells tulips during the festival raise impressive amounts of money each year. Research by board

member Alice Collingwood found that non-profits collectively raised approximately $200,000 over the 2017 festival; all money that gets re-invested right back into the community in the form of scholarships and funding for important local organizations such as Friendship House, Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA and literacy programs.
