Making changes to meet the need Skagit Regional Health continues to evolve and grow to meet the needs of the people of our communities and to change with the rigors presented by the COVID-19 virus.

I am proud of the efforts our providers and staff have made since the March 2020 arrival of this new virus. The situation has created a new reality for us and moved us in new directions to benefit our patients.

One new option we are working on is driven by the voice of our patients who have been telling us that they want a different way to see a provider and communicate with us using technology. We are in the early stages of developing a full telehealth program to better meet the needs of our patients.

We started on a smaller scale, offering telemedicine using MyChart Video Visits for primary and specialty care. Patients may use a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer for a provider visit and can do so from the comfort of their own home, which, today, may also serve as their office. It’s convenient and safe.

As I noted, this is just the beginning. We look forward to bringing you a full program in the months to come.

Even with all of the changes and challenges, we are still moving forward on plans for growth and expansion to meet the needs of our communities. We are pleased to add the established practice of five providers at Cascade Ear, Nose and Throat to the Skagit Regional Health system. We are opening a new Internal Medicine clinic on Division Street in Mount Vernon.

We have reopened the Arlington Surgery Center where we offer outpatient endoscopy procedures three days a week. We will once again occupy the entire clinic facility in Smokey Point in November, adding primary care to our list of specialties, along with Urgent Care and cancer care at that busy location. And, we are looking to the future with more projects in mind.

Meanwhile, we are focused, as always, on the health and safety of our patients, staff and providers as we work through the everchanging landscape of COVID-19.

I encourage patients to be sure to seek care, whether it’s a routine checkup, a child’s vaccination or an urgent or emergent situation.

I am here to assure you that our hospitals and clinics are safe and we are here to provide you with the quality care you need, when and where you need it.

Skagit Regional Health launches new telemedicine program Skagit Regional Health providers and clinics are offering new ways to keep up with patient needs for care by launching a new telemedicine program. The addition of MyChart Video Visits mean appointments are available from the comfort and safety of a patient’s home.

MyChart Video Visits is a new service at Skagit Regional Health, launched to provide patients with options as the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in the region. The service offers clinical visits with the expert healthcare providers patients know and trust.

“MyChart Video Visits are a form of telemedicine that improves access to healthcare and also provides an element of safety for patient distancing,” said Rheumatologist Kevin Welk, MD. “Video visits provide the convenience and comfort of having medical care within a person’s own home.”

With MyChart Video Visits, patients can meet with their primary care provider and many of Skagit Regional Health’s specialists over video chat, from nearly anywhere.

Patients can use a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. They just need stable internet connectivity and

a web camera that is enabled during the visit.

“It’s a great way to visit your doctor without leaving work,” said Jennifer Benson, MD, a Family Medicine provider in Mount Vernon. “You could schedule a visit on a lunch break or between meetings. It might be great for someone who doesn’t have transportation right now or if you’re home with kids and can’t get a babysitter.”

Many patients travel a great distance to meet with a specialist and may have to navigate ferry schedules or other challenges.

“We get patients who drive 20, 30, sometimes 40 miles to meet with a specialist,” said Electrophysiologist Ramy Hanna, MD, who practices at Skagit Regional Health Cardiology. “For those folks, this has really transformed their way of thinking about doctor visits. They can have basically all of the same benefits of coming into the clinic without ever leaving their living room or their home office.”

“For patients who are already established, I can provide almost the same, if not the same level of care as if they were in person,” added Orthopedic Surgeon Christopher Sheu, MD, FAAOS. “I’ve been able to do shoulder, hip and knee exams. Those types of visits, I think, are a little more efficient using the MyChart Video Visit platform.”

MyChart Video Visits are great for discussing ongoing medical problems or new symptoms and can be a convenient way to manage ongoing chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Providers can formulate a plan for patients during a MyChart Video Visit and schedule any necessary follow ups.

“It’s surprising how much you can manage or take care of over a video visit,” said Dr. Benson. “There is a lot we can do by just watching a patient and listening to them talk.”

Patients can request a MyChart Video Visit by calling their provider’s office directly or calling the Patient Resource Center at 360-428-2500. Patients can also request a MyChart Video Visit directly from inside their MyChart patient portal account.

“As long as a patient is set up through MyChart, it’s extremely easy,” said Dr. Sheu. “It’s literally just clicking a button and everything pops up automatically.”

“It seems to work really well,” added Dr. Welk. “It’s an appointment, just like every other appointment and it seems to have, for a lot of patients, been a really positive experience.”

Try Direct Scheduling in MyChart Making an appointment for primary care is now easier than ever with the introduction of direct scheduling in MyChart.

Patients who need to visit their primary care physician, including internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics – in person or via MyChart video visit - can use the MyChart app to schedule an appointment directly onto their provider’s calendar.

Surgery Center open in Arlington The Skagit Regional Health Arlington Surgery Center provides a private, safe and comfortable environment for outpatient procedures.

General surgeons provide EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy), which is an endoscopic procedure to examine the esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine, and colonoscopies, a procedure to examine the large intestine, at the surgery center.

The center is located at 875 Wesley Street, Suite 160, adjacent to Cascade Valley Hospital, in Arlington and is open Monday through Wednesday.

“We have a fantastic team and a great facility,” said Kelly Bradford, Regional Director of Surgical Services for Skagit Regional Health. “The facility is very private and it provides patients easy access to routine preventative healthcare.”

Direct Access: Streamlines screening endoscopy Skagit Regional Health’s Endoscopy Department offers a Direct Access program allowing patients to register, schedule and receive a screening colonoscopy without a doctor’s referral.

Healthy adults over the age of 50 who have not had any colon-related symptoms (rectal bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc.) or any other major health problems are eligible.

The Direct Access program began in 2010 at Skagit Valley Hospital and was recently expanded to the Arlington Surgery Center. Clinical Manager of Endoscopy Stacy Gonzales, RN, noted that her team sees an average of 50 patients each month who have used the selfreferral program.

Patients who have used Direct Access describe the process as “easy” and “simple to use,” and it means just one trip for an appointment. Patients begin the process with a simple phone call or email to the Endoscopy Department’s Direct Access team.

A nurse will contact the patient to review their health history, assist in the registration process and will coordinate an appointment time for the exam. This part of the process can take up to 30 minutes to complete on the phone. The colonoscopy appointment is typically scheduled to occur within two weeks.

Patients who do not qualify for Direct Access due to their health history or current symptoms will be connected with Skagit Regional Health’s Gastroenterology Department or Arlington General Surgery for a consult.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all men and women aged 50 and older talk with their doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer. After age 50, colonoscopies are recommended every 10 years to detect precancerous polyps and earlystage colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. Regular screening colonoscopy is one of the most powerful means of prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer. Studies show that when colorectal cancer is caught early, it is easier to treat.

Dr. Barger grew up in the Lynnwood area, attended Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa and completed his general surgery residency, including robotics training, at Doctors Hospital / Grant Medical Center – Ohio Health in Columbus, Ohio, where he was honored as Resident of the Year. For the past three years, he worked as a general surgeon at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview, Washington. He is board certified in general surgery and serves as an associate professor at Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, the newest medical school in Washington.

“I have had my sights set on moving back to northwest Washington. I consider this home,” he said. “I am looking forward to becoming more integrated in the community and settling here, so I can provide this community with excellent quality surgical care.”

Orthopedic surgeon brings experience from the playing field to the OR Orthopedic Surgeon Christopher Thomas, DO understands the lumps, bumps and injuries that can occur on the gridiron after playing football as a full-ride scholarship athlete at Eastern Washington University.

Watching his teammates in the training room and struggling with injuries himself solidified his plan to attend medical school.

“I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a physician,” Dr. Thomas said. “My time in the training room working through my personal musculoskeletal injuries and observing those of my teammates helped project me on a path towards orthopedics. It is a field that allows me to get people back to the activities they enjoy.”

Dr. Thomas, who played left tackle on the offensive line and stands 6’ 5” tall, describes himself as “A big guy, who is soft spoken and has a calming presence.”

Dr. Thomas joined the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine practice at Skagit Regional Health in July 2020. The group of seven physicians and six Physician Assistants provide a wide range of services from fracture care and joint replacements to specialized hand and upper extremity care.

activities.” Dr. Thomas also enjoys treating arthritis and restoring mobility to his patients, as well as treating injuries that occur in our active lifestyle population.

After graduating from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Dr. Thomas attended medical school locally at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima.

During clinical rotations in medical school, Dr. Thomas immediately knew he found his calling. “The moment I stepped into the OR, I knew it was what I wanted to do and it was the right fit,” he said. “It felt like home, where I was meant to be. The people.

The atmosphere. The technology. It all matched up.”

He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Community Memorial Health System – OPTI West Consortium in Ventura, California in 2020 before returning to the Northwest and joining Skagit Regional Health.

Dr. Thomas married his high school sweetheart, Jessica, and they have been married for 13 years. The couple has a young son with a second child on the way. Away from work, he and his family enjoy the outdoors, camping, hiking, skiing and cooking meals together.

Radiologist: “3D is even better than we anticipated”

3D breast tomosynthesis has been up and running at the Women’s Imaging Center in Mount Vernon for a full year and was recently added at Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington. Radiologist Leah Kiviat, MD is impressed every day with the vast improvement the technology is making in identifying potential cancers with 3D mammography.

“I am still amazed at the cancers we are seeing, it is really incredible,” said Dr. Kiviat, who is with Skagit Radiology and serves as the Women’s Imaging Center Medical Director.

“It’s even better than we anticipated and it’s still amazing to me every day.”

A 3D mammogram combines several breast X-rays to produce a three-dimensional image of the breast, offering more detail and precision that previous 2D technology.

3D technology generates highresolution images of the breast, improves detection of cancer, works well for women with denser breast tissue, lessens the uncomfortable compression time and lowers the number of recalls for additional tests.

As the technology shows even smaller cancers for early detection, patients may not require the invasive treatments often connected to breast cancer.

“A lot of these are treatable or curable and many women may not even need extensive treatment,” Dr. Kiviat said. “The important thing for women to do is to have a screening mammogram. Just go do it. We know it can be anxiety provoking, and we understand. We will walk our patients through it. So many women often say ‘that wasn’t so bad’ and they are happy they got it done.”

For those who require surgery, radiologists and surgeons at Skagit

Regional Health are now using a breast seed implant to localize the tumor. The procedure, which can be done as much as a month before surgery, involves implanting a tiny seed into the breast that responds to a radio frequency. When it’s time for the procedure, the surgeon will use the responsive seed to locate the tumor. The seed implant process replaces the prior wire-guided localization procedure and is an advancement that will improve care and comfort for the patient, Dr. Kiviat said.

The Women’s Imaging Center and the Skagit Imaging Pavilion serves as

a central location for comprehensive diagnostic imaging modalities to benefit patients. If a patient is facing a potential cancer diagnosis, additional tests including breast ultrasound, biopsy and breast MRI, are offered in the same convenient location.

If a diagnosis of cancer is made, the patient will be provided with a seamless hand off to The Breast Institute program at the Regional Cancer Care Center. This patient navigator based program provides wrap-around support for the newly diagnosed patient. The navigator guides patients through the cancer care system to ensure timely care, comprehensive treatment and support through every aspect of their journey.

The patient navigator serves as the patient’s go-to person for all questions and concerns, offering guidance and assistance from the beginning of cancer care throughout the entire treatment plan and into survivorship.

It’s flu season and COVID-19 continues: Be prepared The Fall flu season approaches as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The Centers of Disease Control (CDC) notes, “Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like flu, this fall and winter is more important than ever.” The CDC states getting a flu vaccine is very important in helping to protect yourself, your family and the community from the flu.

• Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle pain or body aches • Headache • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults

Skagit Regional Health to expand services at Smokey Point clinic In November, Skagit Regional Health will expand services at the Smokey Point clinic previously shared with UW Neighborhood Clinic. The 40,000-square foot building is located at 3823 172nd Street NE in Arlington and features primary care, urgent care, a variety of specialties, imaging and cancer care.

The facility opened in 2011 and since January 2016 has been a partnership between UW Neighborhood Clinics and Skagit Regional Health. Leaders with both organizations state that they believe patients will be well served by having local management of the entire clinic.

“We are building strong relationships with patients in north Snohomish County and are very pleased to once again take on full operations of this clinic and expand services for the people of the community,” said Brian Ivie, Chief Executive Officer of Skagit Regional Health. “We are fully committed to providing excellence in primary and specialty care to continue to meet the needs of our patients.”

For the past five years, Skagit Regional Health has provided urgent care, cancer care and specialty services. The organization will now expand to primary care in this conveniently located, modern facility.

Many familiar faces will remain in the clinic as Skagit Regional Health offered opportunities for continued employment to all UW Neighborhood Clinic staff and providers who want to remain with the clinic after the transition.

The ongoing partnership between UW Medicine and Skagit Regional Health remains strong and the two organizations will continue to collaborate on healthcare strategies.

In 2015, the two organizations signed a long-term clinical affiliation agreement to allow for joint partnerships and ventures to meet the healthcare needs for the north Snohomish community.

In north Snohomish County, Skagit Regional Health also operates Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington and a variety of clinics in Arlington, Marysville, Stanwood, Granite Falls and Darrington.

DIVISION STREET CLINIC OPENS Skagit Regional Health – Division Street Clinic opened in September.

The building, located at 1801 E. Division Street in Mount Vernon, has been the home of several independent clinics in the past and will be home to Skagit Regional Health Internal Medicine providers.

As of September, Madeline Button, PA-C and Alexa Celerian, DO will see patients at SRH – Division Street Clinic for routine check-ups and screenings as well as acute illnesses or injuries.

Cascade Ear, Nose and Throat joined Skagit Regional Health in July.

A well-established specialty group of physicians, Cascade Ear, Nose and Throat has served the communities of Mount Vernon and Anacortes for more than 40 years.

Existing patients with Cascade Ear, Nose and Throat continue to see the same familiar faces at their appointments at the same locations in Mount Vernon (118 S. 12th Street) and Anacortes (1019 24th Street, Suite B).

The five highly skilled physicians continue to provide compassionate and personal care, offering diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, for a full continuum of ear, nose and throat conditions.

Otolaryngologists Gary Johnson, MD, Gary Brown, MD, James Gross, MD, Kevin Harris, MD and Christopher England, MD continue to practice in the Mount Vernon and Anacortes offices. Both facilities retained the same office hours after the transition.

I enjoy working with a broad range of patients, from children to the elderly, and I enjoy treating a wide variety of medical issues from sinus issues to hearing to endocrine disorders to head and neck cancer.

What are your special interests within your practice?

I have a particular interest in thyroid and salivary disease and head and neck cancer. Sinus issues are also very interesting. These issues tend to have effective treatments that really help people improve their quality of life.

My father was a general practitioner in Sedro-Woolley for 40 years. I grew up observing him serve the community and develop close long-lasting relationships with his patients. After doing a sixth grade demonstration speech on how to do suturing I pretty much had decided I wanted to pursue a career in medicine.

Although I didn’t recognize it fully until I had already begun college, the chance to help heal, including using my hands in surgery was appealing to me. Encouragement from family and generous mentors helped steer me to a career in medicine, and ultimately Otolaryngology.

What are your special interests within your practice?

I enjoy the opportunity to treat patients of all ages, helping them improve their quality of life. I have been practicing in the community since 1985 and am treating children and grandchildren of my patients. I love coming to work each day!

I enjoy all facets of our specialty, but particularly enjoy challenging ear surgery, helping restore health and hearing.

Dr. Gross earned his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, WA. Dr. Gross completed his general surgical residency at the University of Washington and his Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery residency at Harvard. He enjoys swimming, hiking, skiing and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest as a grandparent. Otolaryngology as a surgical subspecialty allows for care of all ages, newborn to elderly, which I greatly enjoy. It offers the opportunity to help a patient both medically and surgically--at times with immediate and life-changing benefits. The variety requires lifelong learning and is both satisfying and humbling. I also appreciate the extended patient relationships and comradery with colleagues.

I enjoy the variety of a general ENT surgical practice, and have additional training in Otolaryngic Allergy, which contributes to many of the most common ear, nose and throat issues encountered in primary care as well.

After falling from a tree when I was 12, I felt chest and back pain. Our family doctor came to our home and helped me with an injection. As a farm boy with many wounds, that was the first time that I had quick relief from pain! It was amazing. So later, that was a stimulus for being able to relieve pain in other people.

I was motivated, even in high school, to become a physician. I was influenced by our family physician who was filled not only with excellent medical knowledge but was also a very caring person. Often he would charge my grandmother a dollar for a home visit.

When I was a young student in school I learned about Environmental Theory. This is the belief that the environment affects our health just as much as our genetics.

This includes food, exercise and stress management. Even the air we breathe and the people around us can affect our health. I really connected with this theory, and because of this my interests gravitate towards areas of health where I can use environmental interventions as well as traditional medicine to make a positive impact.

Areas like diabetic management, cardiac heath and women’s health are a few fields of study where we can incorporate the patient environment into the care plan and make not only short term gains, but also look to the future and adapt the patient environment for better long term results as well.

What are your special interests within your practice?

ENT serves all ages and contains common problems of hearing loss, sinus issues, breathing difficulty and more complex issues like nasal obstruction, twisted noses and septal deviation. Board certification in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery allows surgical treatment, when indicated, with less down time utilizing advanced techniques and instrumentation.

What would you like your patients to know about you?

I am looking forward to being part of a large stable organization with a wide reach, still practicing locally, and being able to treat all patients who need help.

I chose ear, nose and throat because the surgeries were challenging and varied, from intricate ear surgery to head and neck cancer removal, and the patients are of all ages. I really enjoy children and considered becoming a pediatrician early in my training.

I enjoy diagnostic work, difficult symptoms that make me think. I particularly enjoy facial reconstruction, secondary to skin cancer surgery.

Growing up in rural Alaska opened my eyes to the unique role of primary health care providers in a small town.

The breadth of the specialty is incredible. Whether it be cervical and breast cancer screenings, choosing a birth control method, trying to conceive, prenatal care, delivering babies, managing gynecologic issues, performing surgery and caring for patients through menopause and beyond, I have the privilege of helping women at every stage of their lives.

What do you enjoy the most about your chosen field/specialty?

I enjoy internal medicine due to the opportunity to connect with my patients, and manage complex cases. I am grateful for the opportunity to have a positive impact on their health, and get to learn from my patients each day!

What are you most passionate about professionally?

Airlift Northwest: Helicopters play key role in trauma system In this photo, an Airlift Northwest helicopter takes off, transporting a patient to a higher level of trauma care at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s and other destinations. These flying intensive care units are staffed by two critical care trained nurses on board each flight. Skagit Valley Hospital has a helipad on the roof where Airlift has flown out 157 times in the past two years. Cascade Valley Hospital has a helistop across the street from the hospital’s Emergency Department where Airlift has provided 43 flights out of Arlington in the past two years. Airlift Northwest bases aircraft in Bellingham, Arlington, Seattle, Olympia, Yakima, Bremerton, Wenatchee and Juneau.

MD, DO, ARNP, PA-C: What do all these letters mean?

When patients are searching for a provider they want to know what all those letters after their names mean and what are the differences?

Skagit Regional Health benefits from the skills and expertise of a variety of healthcare providers to care for patients. Here is a quick summary of four types of providers who may care for you at a Skagit Regional Health hospital or clinic:

Physician Both medical doctors (MDs) and doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) work in hospital and clinic settings. Both are licensed doctors who have completed four years of medical school and additional residency training to prepare for practice in a specific care area. MDs and DOs must pass comparable exams to obtain a state license.

One of the main differences between MDs and DOs is the osteopathic philosophy of care which emphasizes the integration of all the body’s systems and healing the body through use of osteopathic manipulation techniques.

Resident Physician A Resident is a licensed physician who has graduated from medical school and practices under the supervision of a fully licensed physician during their training. He or she spends several years focusing care in a specialized area during residency training. Skagit Regional Health offers residency training in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Residents provide care in both the hospital and outpatient setting. The Graduate Medical education program at Skagit Regional Health currently includes 19 Internal Medicine residents and nine Family Medicine residents.

ARNP Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) are registered nurses (RN) who have additional education and training at the Masters (MSN) or Doctorate (DNP) level. Nurse practitioners care for patients by assessing health risks, employing preventative health measures, diagnosing and managing diseases, ordering diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications. The work with patients across the age spectrum in a variety of primary and specialty care settings. They practice independently in many states, including Washington. “Nurse practitioners’ nursing background fundamentally shapes their approach to patient care,” said Kelli Kraft, ARNP at Skagit Regional Health – Darrington. “With a focus on seeing patients in the context of their environment, NPs help patients minimize their health risks and best manage their diseases. This patientcentered approach and nursing background helps NPs empower patients to live their healthiest lives.” Nurse Practitioners practice in primary care, specialty care departments and in both urgent and emergency care at Skagit Regional Health.

PA-C and PA PA-C stands for certified Physician Assistant. Physician Assistants have graduated from an accredited educational program which typically takes three years to complete.

They have also been certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Their skills are used in a full range of clinical areas including primary care, medical and surgical specialties,

as well as in urgent or emergency care settings. Their role is to serve as an extension of the supervising physician. Physician Assistants are valuable assets to many clinics where they practice in collaboration with physicians to educate patients about their diagnosis and can help set reasonable expectations for any planned surgery or treatment.

PAs diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, perform office procedures, assist surgeons in the operating room and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. “With thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative,” said Jon Ruff, PAC. PAs practice in all states and in every medical setting and specialty.

“As an orthopedic PA, I enjoy listening to patients and formulating a plan to help them increase their quality of life,” said PA Ruff. “It is great to see patients improve as they are educated about their health concerns and ways we can work together to better help them.”

Khadij Assani, DO was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and majored in Physiology and Religion at the University of California in Los Angeles. After graduating, she spent a few months in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, working on medical school admissions processes and bringing the best practices of modern medicine to East Africa. Dr. Assani was introduced to medicine at a young age through accompanying her grandmother to her doctor’s appointments after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Assani said she hopes to treat her patients holistically and provide empathetic, compassionate care.

Dr. Assani is excited to move to the Pacific Northwest and learn all about what it has to offer, starting off with the food.

Savannah Broadlick, DO is a Pacific Northwest native and grew up spending her weekdays in Edmonds and weekends on San Juan Island.

She attended Washington State University to study neuroscience.

While there, she learned to embrace her love of science and decided to pursue medicine. She attended Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Washington. Her third- and fourth-years of medical school were spent in Mount Vernon, where preceptors, residents, and mentors at Skagit Regional Health inspired her to pursue Internal Medicine. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family’s dogs, fresh water fishing, reading mystery novels, crosswords and riding horses.

Rhandy Ceballos, DO was raised in the Dominican Republic where he lived until the age of 13 before moving to Florida. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the

University of Florida and a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida before completing medical school at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. He likes attending music festivals, watching the Seahawks play and relaxing at home with his girlfriend and cat.

Matthew Kon, DO a first generation Polish-American who grew up in Florida and North Carolina. He studied Marine Biology and Jazz at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington before going on to pursue Osteopathic Medicine at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Dr. Kon enjoys travel, hiking, biking, surfing, climbing and good food. With a passion for rural primary care, Dr. Kon said he is elated to be moving to the Pacific Northwest to begin an exciting career in medicine.

Melinda Mantooth, DO was raised north of Seattle and learned the value of hard work through her mother’s example and growing up as a competitive dancer. She studied Spanish throughout college.

As an osteopathic physician, she strives to provide excellent care to all of her patients including historically underserved and marginalized populations. Dr. Mantooth and her partner are extreme animal lovers and enjoy spending time with their pack of rescue dogs, family and friends.

Sarah Zubair, MD grew up in New Brunswick, Canada with her parents and three siblings. Her family then moved to Ontario. His partner, Dr. Katherine J. Anderson, is a Professor of Victorian Literature and Culture at Western Washington University. Their daughter, Kaitlin, is starting her junior year at the University of California-Davis. Dr. Hafen said he enjoys having delicious food with the company of his family and friends, puttering about in his garden/yard, walking his dog, Sherlock, and attending concerts.

Emergency Department Medical Director Krishnaraj “Raj” Jayarama, DO recalls quite a few patients in recent months who delayed care and arrived at the Skagit Valley Hospital ER with much more serious symptoms.

“When these patients finally do come in, they are sicker than they would have been had they taken action with the onset of symptoms,” he said. “Please don’t let COVID scare you from the hospital and the ER. It’s a safe place to come for care.”

Examples include a person who had chest pain for several days and had suffered a heart attack that now creates lifelong health issues; a patient who presented so sick with an infection they needed to be treated in the ICU after waiting to come to the hospital; and a person who had “belly pain” for a period of days who arrived with a ruptured appendix.

“We are seeing a lot of very sick patients and the acuity has gone way up,” Dr. Jayarama said. “We are taking all the right precautions. We are wearing the appropriate PPE. We ask all patients and visitors to wear masks. We can care for you safely.”

As a system, as of September 1, Skagit Regional Health staff and providers have treated dozens of inpatients with COVID-19, however, the number of positive inpatients at any given time has averaged in the single digits at Skagit Valley Hospital, licensed for 137 beds, and averaged one or less at Cascade Valley Hospital, licensed for 48 beds. Patients who test positive are cared for by staff with expertise in respiratory illness in rooms within specific areas of the hospitals with all appropriate precautions in place.

“We are continually monitoring the medical science and our community infection status. We are in close contact with Public Health.

“Keeping your children’s vaccinations up-to-date is very important now more than ever especially during this time of uncertainty. Vaccines will help children fight off viral and bacterial infections and continue to keep them healthy!” Dr. Go said.

General Surgeon Jimmy Barger, DO, FACOS, who joined Skagit Regional Health in April 2020, as the virus was increasing in prevalence, has been impressed from the beginning with the organization’s safety standards and adherence to local, state and national guidelines.

“Skagit has taken excellent precautions every step of the way,” Dr. Barger said, noting ample PPE is available and staff, patients and visitors wear masks.

With the presence of the virus in the community, Dr. Barger emphasized that people should take the right precautions and seek care as needed.

“The risk of contracting the virus is not any higher in our clinics and hospitals than it is going to the grocery store,” he said. “It is safe.

We have screening and masking measures in place and it’s very important to see your physician for concerns and maintenance of routine and chronic issues.”

Coronavirus and Children:

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

By Erin Charles, MD Pediatric Hospitalist, Skagit Regional Health, in partnership with Seattle Children’s We have all been hearing about COVID-19 and how it mostly affects adults. What about our children?

While, in general, children have not been as sick with COVID-19 as adults, there are pediatric patients who have had COVID-19.

Children can also be infected with COVID-19 without being sick and then weeks later develop severe symptoms. A small number of children, including some in Northwest Washington, have developed a serious illness which may be linked to COVID-19 called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).

What is MIS-C? MIS-C is a very rare condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs. Children with MIS-C may have a fever and various symptoms including abdominal (belly) pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes or feeling extra tired.

It is not yet known what causes MIS-C. However, many children with MIS-C have had the virus that causes COVID-19 or had been around someone with COVID-19.

Early studies suggest that MIS-C may involve how the body’s immune system reacts to the virus. The body’s defense system may overreact and cause harm to the body it is trying to protect.

MIS-C may be part of a disease spectrum including Kawasaki Disease, which also may involve the heart, rash and high fever among other problems. Kawasaki Disease typically affects children younger than age 5, however, MIS-C has been seen in patients ages 6 months to 21 years. The peak age of MIS-C is 8 years. Children with MIS-C are admitted to a children’s hospital with

multispecialty care and a pediatric intensive care unit. There are several kinds of treatments and, in spite of the severe symptoms, most children recover.

Contact your child’s doctor, nurse or clinic right away if your child has symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever or chills, cough, fatigue or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, mild nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

If your child has trouble breathing, pain or pressure in the chest that does not go away, new confusion or sleepiness, bluish lips or face, or severe abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, go to the Emergency Room or call 911.

At Skagit Regional Health, the pediatricians working at Skagit Valley Hospital are part of the Regional Hospital Medicine Program at Seattle Children’s. Skagit’s Pediatric Hospitalist Team works closely with Seattle Children’s, just as pediatricians in our community have for decades.

The Pediatric Team at Skagit Regional Health and Seattle Children’s are prepared to care for children with MIS-C. Experts at Seattle Children’s have created guidelines to help diagnose and treat our patients who may have MIS-C. If a child needs to be transferred to Seattle Children’s, the Emergency Medicine and Transport Communication Center connects us quickly to the intensive care and transport teams to ensure our patients are transferred swiftly and safely.

Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation Pays Off $2 million Pledge to Women’s Imaging Center The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation was pleased to present a check for $2 million to Skagit Regional Health in support of the Skagit Imaging Pavilion project. The $2 million goal was reached after a 20-month capital campaign.

Proceeds helped to support the purchase of diagnostic imaging equipment for the Women’s Imaging Center, including 3D mammography. The Skagit Imaging Pavilion, a partnership between Skagit Regional Health and Skagit Radiology, opened in Fall 2019 and features the latest in diagnostic imaging including 3D mammography, MRI, Ultrasound, CT and Stereotactic Biopsy.

CARES Act Includes Tax Deduction Benefit Thank you, as always, for supporting the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation. You may be aware that Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) in March 2020. Several provisions were included for those who give to charity: For many people who no longer itemize their charitable giving and instead take the standard deduction, the CARES Act will now also allow individual taxpayers to additionally deduct up to $300 per taxpayer ($600 for married couples) on their 2020 federal tax return.

The new deduction is only for cash gifts given to a public charity. There are new provisions for corporate donors as well.

For the past four summers, former oncology nurse Tammy McNeil of La Conner has grown and sold tomato plants with the proceeds benefitting the Skagit Regional Health Cancer Care Center. The Foundation thanks Tammy for sharing her green thumb and for the $1,100 she has donated to support patient care!

Bouquets of Appreciation Mount Vernon resident and La Venture Middle School 8th grade student Darian Whiton presented several bouquets to the Emergency Department Nursing staff on Monday, July 20 as a thank you for their work.

Darian grew these beautiful blooms with the purpose of giving gratitude to the dedicated nursing staff at Skagit Valley Hospital. Emergency Department Charge Nurse Brenda Hubin-Price happily accepted the fresh bouquets on behalf of her staff. “The staff was so grateful,” said Hubin-Price.

32nd Annual Festival of Trees Celebrates Although the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s 2020 Festival of Trees will look a little different this year, one thing that isn’t changing is our commitment to keeping it just as special.

The Festival’s annual “Breakfast at the North Pole” will not be held this year.

As with many fund-raising events this year, the Foundation Board of Trustees and staff had to pivot and replan to assure the safety of our guests, donors and volunteers.

ParTee Classic canceled due to Coronavirus Pandemic, but support still strong!

Out of concern for the health and safety of our golfers and volunteers, the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation made the difficult decision to cancel the ParTee Golf Classic, scheduled to take place at the Skagit Golf and Country Club on August 14th.

SIGNS OF GRATITUDE

Early in the morning of April 20, a sea of signs sharing messages of gratitude and encouragement arrived in the landscape of many Skagit Regional Health facilities from Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon to Darrington and Arlington.

The signs and banners, designed to lift the spirits of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, were the brainchild of a newly minted organization called Skagit Attitudes of Gratitude.

CVH MEDICAL STAFF PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL SENIORS

The Cascade Valley Hospital Medical Staff presented $1,000 scholarships to three local high school seniors. Connie Davis, MD, Skagit Regional Health’s Chief Medical Officer was named to the Skagit County Board of Health in April 2020.

The appointment followed approval in December 2019 by the Skagit County Board of Commissioners of an ordinance to adopt Skagit County Code Chapter 12.01, expanding the size of the Board of Health from three to five members.

Dr. Davis, who joined Skagit Regional Health as the Chief Medical Officer in 2012, has more than 30 years of health care experience. Dr. Davis previously served as Director of the Kidney Care Line and Co-Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant program at the University of Washington. She received her medical degree at the University of Washington and went on to residencies and a nephrology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Schools Hospitals and Clinics. She also participated in a research fellowship at Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich.

Dr. Davis has served on the Population Health Trust of Skagit County since its inception and has critical firsthand knowledge of the health issues in Skagit County.

“I have a passion in my work as a healthcare provider for improving the health and wellness of the people of our communities through data analytics, cultural understanding, policy and positive change,” Dr. Davis said. “I am truly honored to bring my expertise and energy to the Skagit County Board of Health.”

Until this year, the Board of Health had solely been comprised of the Skagit County Commissioners, who regularly sought advice from the Population Health Trust Advisory Committee.

“The timing is perfect to add Dr. Davis to the Board of Health as we retool public health policy,” said Commissioner Lisa Janicki. “She has a distinguished medical career and genuinely cares about the people of Skagit County. We are grateful she is willing to serve on the Board of Health.”

HONORS FROM LIFECENTER NORTHWEST Skagit Valley Hospital was recently honored with the Organ Donation Achievement Award and the Collaboration Achievement Award from LifeCenter Northwest.

According to LifeCenter Northwest’s annual report, hospitals with high donation rates excel at recognizing donation referral criteria, making timely calls, maintaining the opportunity for donation and collaborating with LifeCenter Northwest for planned donation discussions. Achieving a high donation rate requires an ongoing

commitment to ensuring every donation opportunity is realized.

Organ donation requires collaboration between the hospital and LifeCenter Northwest staff. LifeCenter Northwest noted, “One of the most important areas for collaboration is at the time of family conversation regarding donation.” The Collaboration Achievement Award honors hospitals that excel in planning a collaborative family conversation with LifeCenter Northwest. LifeCenter Northwest is a federally designated non profit organ procurement organization.

STROKE CARE HONORS FOR SKAGIT VALLEY, CASCADE VALLEY HOSPITALS Both Skagit Regional Health acute care hospitals have received stroke care honors from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association 2020 Get with the Guidelines® program.

Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington received the 2020 Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Silver Quality Achievement Award and also qualified for the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition.

Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon received the 2020 Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus with Honor Roll Elite achievement award and Target: Stroke honors.

The awards recognize the commitment and success by hospital staff and leadership in implementing a high standard of stroke care by ensuring that their stroke patients receive treatment that meets nationally accepted, evidence-based standards and recommendations.

SKAGIT REGIONAL HEALTH OFFERS NURSE RESIDENCY PROGRAM The first group of newly graduated nurses to enter Skagit Regional Health’s Nurse Residency Program started on the job in summer 2020 and will benefit from an additional year of training and mentorship.

During the one-year program, nurse residents will complete monthly education, including classroom sessions, simulation and patient experiences, to advance their knowledge, skills and confidence in the complex healthcare setting. Each nurse resident will also have a skilled preceptor to help provide support.

“We are so excited to have a program that will support our Nurse Residents as they transition from student nurse to Registered Nurse,” said Michelle Marty, Director of Clinical Practice and Education / Acute Care at Skagit Regional Health.

Participants must be post-baccalaureate and associate degree nurses with less than six months experience and be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington. They will participate in a curriculum and program structure following the Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nurses model.

JANICKI INDUSTRIES DONATES PATIENT TREATMENT BOOTH Janicki Industries in Sedro-Woolley typically designs and builds carbonfiber aerospace parts and production tools, but when COVID-19 began impacting the local community, they quickly turned their attention to helping area hospitals.

In early April, Janicki Industries was asked to help find a way to better isolate COVID-19 patients during oxygen-nebulizer treatments. Janicki announced an internal contest with product designs due in three days. Bryan Harris, Program Manager at Janicki Industries, won the design contest with a 4-foot by 4-foot clear polycarbonate booth that was 8 feet tall. Transparent walls allow for patient monitoring and comfort. The booth was sized to allow for wheelchair access and includes a ceiling fan with a 0.3-micron HEPA filtration system that creates a slight vacuum to prevent air that may carry COVID-19 from leaving the booth.

The Janicki team completed the entire design and fabrication process in nine days. The booth was delivered to Skagit Valley Hospital on April 21.

“All clinicians know that right beside them is a great engineer who can actually make dreams happen,” said Chief Medical Officer Connie Davis, MD, who advised on the project.

“Doctors identify a need and then have the creativity of the people who know materials, form and mechanics. Janicki has been a leader in innovation for years and we are grateful for their creation!”

Dispose of them properly According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon installed a new drop box in the main lobby in 2019 to provide residents with a convenient place to properly and safely dispose of unneeded medications free of charge.

In a partnership with Med-Project, the kiosk provides a location to dispose of unwanted or expired medication, including controlled substances. The

kiosk is in full view of the main desk, is visible on lobby security cameras and is bolted to the floor.

Many pharmacies and law enforcement agencies also participate and the State of Washington will launch a Safe Medication Return Program as well later this year.

Skagit Regional Health now offers 3D mammography in Mount Vernon and Arlington Mammography is a specific type of breast imaging that uses lowdose X-rays to detect breast cancer early – before women experience symptoms – when it is most treatable.

Mammography plays an integral part in the early detection of breast cancer because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before you or your physician can feel a noticeable lump. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women should begin having yearly mammograms by age 45. At the age of 55, women should talk with their doctor about the option to have mammograms done every other year, or continue with annual exams. Women can also choose to start screening with yearly mammograms as early as age 40, if they would like.

Regularly Scheduled Screenings Can Detect Cancer Early According to the American Cancer Society, “screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be treated successfully.” Several reliable, cost-effective, screening tests are approved and available to help us detect breast, prostate, colon, lung and cervical cancers. Cervical Cancer Screening The American Cancer Society, along with the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, recommend the following for women at low to average risk: • 21 - 29 years old – Pap test every 3 years.

• 30 - 65 years old – HPV and Pap every 5 years or Pap alone every 3 years.

• 65+ years old – No screening if previous negative screening results.

Lung Cancer Screening The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that healthy adults at high risk for lung cancer should talk to their provider about screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT).

An adult at high risk is defined as the following: • 55 - 74 years old and smoking on average one pack per day for 30+ years.

• Currently smoke or quit smoking in the past 15 years.

• 50 years old or older and smoking on average one pack per day.

• 20 years old or older who has contact with radon or asbestos, history of lung disease, other cancers or a family history of lung cancer.

Prostate Cancer Screening for Men at Various Risk Levels Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and it can often be found even before symptoms occur. Based on the recommendations of the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer baseline screening for men includes talking with their healthcare provider to determine their risk level. There are two ways to determine if a man has prostate cancer: • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA): Blood test to determine if higher than normal levels of this antigen are present.

• Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): Physical examination through the rectum to evaluate the size of the prostate gland.

If either of these tests is abnormal, further testing is necessary to make an accurate prostate cancer diagnosis and monitor treatment. Usually, a core needle biopsy is the method used to diagnose prostate cancer.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program This intensive program can help patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other chronic lung diseases to reduce respiratory symptoms, improve functional independence and complications and reduce hospitalizations. The program is provided by a multi-disciplinary team plus individualized education to help patients understand and learn how to manage and cope with daily activities.

Participants learn self-management and relaxation techniques to improve emotional well-being, skills to help regain control of their breathing and pursue activities to the fullest extent of their abilities. CPR Classes Online Classes from the American Red Cross take only a few short hours, but can help you save a life when every second counts. Designed for coaches, parents, adults and teenagers, our online CPR classes make it easy to gain the skills needed to respond during cardiac or breathing emergencies.

Taken entirely online, these courses do not include the opportunity for you to demonstrate skill proficiency to a certified instructor, and therefore may not meet requirements for workplace safety certification. PROGRAMS FOR PARKINSON’S Parkinson’s BIG® Program

Skagit Regional Health Occupational Therapist Jenna Williams, OTR/L and Physical Therapists Dana Sturtz, DPT, Bree Corbin, MPT and Kaitlyn Ambrose, PTA have completed the required comprehensive hands-on training and testing through LSVT Global to become certified LSVT BIG® clinicians. LSVT BIG® is a researchbased exercise program focused on amplitude (bigger movement) training for individuals with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease often results in the slowing of movements and decreased size of movements leaving the individual struggling with daily tasks and walking. The LSVT BIG® program focuses on teaching the amount of effort needed to produce normal movements through intensive and high-effort practice. The protocol consists of 16, one-hour sessions, four days a week for four weeks. This program is appropriate for all stages of

Parkinson’s LOUD® Program Skagit Regional Health Speech Language Pathologist Kristin Conzo, MS, CCC-SLP and Mallory Metzger, M.S., CCC-SLP have completed the required comprehensive hands-on training and testing through LSVT Global to become certified LSVT LOUD® clinicians. LSVT LOUD® is a research-based exercise program focused on amplitude (loud voice) training for individuals with Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s disease often results in a slowing of movements and decreased size of movements leaving the individual struggling with daily tasks related to communication and swallowing. The LSVT LOUD® program focuses on teaching the amount of effort needed to produce normal loudness through intensive and high-effort practice. The protocol consists of 16, one-hour sessions, four days a week for four weeks. This program is appropriate for all stages of Parkinson’s disease and is offered at Skagit Valley Hospital. MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SERVICES Connections Support Group

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Connections Support Groups are for people living with a mental illness. These groups are free, confidential and peer led. Gain insight from hearing about the challenges and successes of others and leave knowing that you are not alone in living with a mental illness. These groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators.

Meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month from 7 - 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. Registration required by calling Sandy at 360-420-6595.

Mental Health Support Groups NAMI Skagit Open Support Group is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. Family members, partners and those living with mental illness are welcome. Registration is required by calling Marti at 360-770-5666.

NAMI Family Support Group is for families who have a loved one living with a mental illness. This group meets via Zoom on the first and third Monday of every month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is required by calling Julie at 360-941-0996.

NAMI Skagit Open Daytime Support Group is held every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. online through Zoom. It is for both family and the person living with mental illness. Registration is required by calling Julie at 360-941-0996.

Family-to-Family EvidenceBased Education Program Free eight-session course for families of adults with mental illness or a brain disorder. The course focuses on helping family members understand the major mental illnesses and maintain their own well-being while providing needed support to their ill family members. This program is provided at no cost by NAMI Skagit, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Registration is required; class is limited in size. Peer-to-Peer Education Program Free eight-week course for adults living with mental illness or brain disorders to help them better understand their illness and maintain and improve their recovery. Honoring Veterans with expert end-of-life care

A generation of World War II and Korean War Veterans are facing endof-life care decisions now. They are quickly being followed by younger Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans, many of whom are confronting serious illnesses at an even earlier age.

It surprises many Americans to learn that 25 percent of all the people who die in this country annually have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

With more than 700,000 Veterans living in the Hospice of the Northwest service area, it is imperative that our staff and clinicians are equipped to address the unique needs of our communities’ Veterans. To that end, Hospice of the Northwest is taking part in an innovative program called, We Honor Veterans. The program was developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The primary purpose of incorporating We Honor Veterans at Hospice of the Northwest is to provide patient centric education to staff and volunteers, build

organizational capacity to provide care for Veterans and their families, develop and strengthen relationships with the Veterans Health Administration medical centers and other Veteran organizations and increase access and improve quality of care for Veterans in our community.

Throughout the year, Hospice of the Northwest staff and volunteers participate in the We Honor Veterans program by learning about patients’ service histories, connecting Veteran patients with Veteran volunteers, recognizing Veterans with pinning ceremonies and challenge coins and connecting them with Veteranspecific resources in the community.

In this way, we make sure every Veteran is served with compassion and dignity every moment of life.

Sincere kudos to our healthcare team

“We are here. We are ready.” You may have seen these words used to describe Skagit Regional Health in recent months as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed. These words are so very true. As a Board of Commissioners, we are so proud of the effort our staff and providers have made to put patients first and provide outstanding care.

You can be confident in the safe, quality care you will receive at Skagit Regional Health. Staff, providers, patients and visitors must wear masks and are screened upon entry. Our Environmental Services team keeps all our facilities clean and we have a regimen of disinfecting surfaces in our hospitals and clinics throughout every day. We have limited visitors, which we know can be hard on a patient and family members, however, it’s the right thing to do to minimize the number of people in our facilities.

COVID-19 has presented challenges at every turn for our healthcare team, our community and beyond. We prepared well using our incident command system. We work hard to ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is available. We follow all appropriate protocols and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control. We have a close partnership with Public Health officials, which has been critical during the pandemic. We are here. We are ready.

You can be confident in knowing that our team is well versed in caring for patients with respiratory

and infectious diseases and they are showing their expertise and compassion every day. Our hospital teams have skillfully cared for COVID-positive patients over the past six months. Skagit Regional Health has been fortunate that our numbers of hospitalized patients have not overwhelmed our system and we’ve been able to safely provide necessary procedures and care to others. We have talented staff, equipment and capacity to take care of the people of our community – for all their needs, from joint replacement to having a baby.

For those in our community who have lost loved ones, we offer our deepest condolences and empathy to you and your family. We encourage everyone to take the precautions necessary to halt the spread of the virus: Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, maintain social distancing and stay home when sick. By working together, we can make a difference.

Our team at Skagit Regional Health has truly risen to the occasion and will continue to do so. As a Board, we want to thank each member of our team and express our deep appreciation for your hard work.

New committee to focus on community health The Board of Commissioners in August approved the launch of a Community Health Committee, dedicated to the health and wellness needs of the communities served by Skagit Regional Health. The panel, including Board and community members, will look at how Skagit Regional Health addresses services, equity and access to care, our partnerships with the community and look at population health metrics and other data to evaluate existing gaps and recommend improvements.
