General Surgeon Morrie Johnson, MD recently wrote a thank you note to Skagit Regional Health staff stating “We all know that providing health care is a team sport. We’re not in a race by ourselves, but all together working for the same goal of providing quality health care for this community.”

Dr. Johnson’s comments are so true. Health care involves a team and our team is committed to providing a great experience for every patient, every day with every encounter.

To do so, we have embraced what we call the “Big Three” initiatives.

Culture of Safety + Employees + Providers = A positive patient experience. This equation represents Skagit Regional Health’s commitment to the hard work it takes at every level to embrace safety, to engage employees and gain provider participation to create positive patient experiences.

Safety is first on our “Big Three” list because we know that providing safety and quality, for our patients, our staff, our providers, and our visitors, is the essential foundation in all we do.

Employee engagement is central to building on that foundation. We have outstanding staff and highly skilled caregivers. Leadership is putting extra time and attention to listening to staff through forums

and rounding and putting new ideas into action. We are encouraging ramped-up communications, training and providing tools to make sure all members of the health care team maximize their role in the patient experience.

SPRINGINTOACTION Tips for Safe Cycling

There are millions of Americans who ride bikes and those numbers are increasing all the time. Regular bicycling can help protect you from serious diseases such as stroke, heart attack, some cancers, diabetes and obesity.

Riding a bike is healthy fun, and a low impact form of exercise for all ages.

Cycling is easy to fit into your daily routine by riding to the shops, park, school or work. With more and more riders on the trails and roads, these tips for beginner cyclists will help you ride better and more safely.

PROTECT YOUR HEAD

Head injuries are the cause of 60 percent of all cycling deaths in the U.S. every year. Many of these deaths could be avoided if everyone wore a helmet while cycling. Always wear a properly fitted helmet when riding and make sure your kids do as well. For

FIT YOUR BIKE

Having your bike set up to fit your body will make riding much easier, comfortable and safe. When standing over a straight tube, there should be one to two inches between you and the frame for a road bike and three to four inches on a mountain/hybrid. While seated, you should have a slight bend in your knee when the pedal is pushed down all the way. On a step-through bike, your leg should be slightly bent when the pedal is pushed down all the way.

READY TO RIDE

Do a basic bike check or the ABC Quick Check each time you ride to make sure your bike is in good working order.

• A stands for AIR: Check to see that the tires are inflated to the pressure listed on the side of the tire using a pressure gauge.

• B is for BRAKES: Look to see that you can fit your thumb between the brake lever and handlebar when the brakes are squeezed all the way. Check pad adjustments to make sure they do not rub the tire and replace brake pads when there is less than ¼ - inch of pad left.

• C is for CRANKS and CHAINS: Pull on the cranks and pedals to make sure they are tight. Clean the chain and apply chain lubricant regularly to keep it free of rust and gunk.

• Quick is for QUICK RELEASE: Make sure your quick releases on both wheels and possibly the seat stem are tightly closed.

They should be pointing to the back of the bike so they don’t get caught on anything.

• Check is for CHECK IT OVER: Take a quick spin in your driveway or neighborhood to make sure everything sounds and feels ready to roll.

signal, make complete stops at signs and wait for red lights for your turn to ride through. Yield to pedestrians. Ride to the right and ride with traffic.

WHAT TO WEAR

Start slowly. If you are out of shape or it has been a while since you have ridden your bike, it is best to start slowly. Pick a place where you feel comfortable; a trail, a quiet neighborhood or a school parking lot on the weekend may be great places to build your confidence and build up endurance. Gradually increase time on the saddle, increase the intensity and distance of your rides and explore more challenging terrain, adding hills for more of a workout.

To be healthy, you need to be physically active. Riding your bicycle regularly or in combination with walking and other activities that you enjoy can be part of your winning health formula.

Besides a helmet, you don’t have to wear special cycling gear in order to ride a bike. Everyday clothes work fine.

If your bike doesn’t have a chain guard keep your pants away from the chain by rolling up your pant leg or using a leg band. It is always a good idea to wear bright colors and reflective gear. If it’s going to get dark, have a good headlight and Washington law requires a red rear reflector or red light.

Tips for getting children moving – with you!

Emily Bianconi, ARNP, a nurse practitioner at Skagit Pediatrics and a resident of Mount Vernon, enjoys spending time doing active things with her husband, Matt who works in Information Systems at Skagit Regional Health and their two children.

Start by picking an activity that is enjoyable and sustainable.

“I think the first part of incorporating children into physical activity is to model physical activity,” Bianconi said. “Kids are watching, and mimicking everything we do, the bad and the good. Picking a physical activity that is enjoyable will make it sustainable and then the kids will see their favorite adults being active as part of life.”

Add the kids into the things you enjoy.

“Runners will likely want to invest in a jogger stroller to bring the kids along when they are little, then later have the kids do ‘fun runs’ and after that run-walk some 2ks or 5ks together.

If the family enjoys soccer, then carry a ball in the car to kick around at a park or at a road trip pit stop.”

Sometimes it’s about change of scenery.

“I've had times where it wasn't so much about exercise but about a change in scenery to help us all improve our mood,” she said. “A walk around the block at a toddler's pace, getting caught up in all the little things they notice (a worm, an ordinary rock, a flower) can be joyful.”

Focus on the fun.

“Throughout it’s important to focus on the fun rather than the exercise.

Play ‘I spy,’ look for heart-shaped rocks, or do a ‘trash walk’ where you carry a bag and pick up trash.”

Be prepared.

“The part that my husband, Matt, is far better at remembering is to be prepared: Allow plenty of time because any activity can be longer than you think. Bring appropriate clothing for the weather. Bring a change of clothes if you'll be anywhere near water.

Don’t forget the snacks and water.”

‘Sim’

speaks, bleeds, blinks

Staff, residents receive training in new simulation lab A cluster of caregivers gather at the bedside. Fast-paced discussion, questions and decisions are made by the care team gathered to manage a code call for a stroke. Vital signs are tracked. The monitor beeps. Drugs are administered through IVs. Time is of the essence. Teamwork is critical.

The team gathered in the Skagit Regional Health Simulation Lab this morning are students, residents, nurses, pharmacists and other staff who are training on the latest in high-tech patient simulators – a lifelike, full-body, high-fidelity mannequin that can speak, bleed, blink, sweat, have seizures, make lung and heart sounds and exhibit a wide array of other human characteristics.

The team members know their roles, go through the very real scenario for the stroke “patient” whose blood pressure and pulse are soaring. Once the vitals are somewhat stabilized and the

decision is made to administer the clotbusting drug tPA, the code ends. The team discusses what has taken place over the last 10 minutes: What went well? What did they learn from the experience? What could be done better?

Next, they do it again.

“Simulation promotes safety and training. The simulators allow you to practice emergency situations and procedures in a low-stress environment.

They allow you to get the procedure ‘down’ so that when it comes up in a real life situation, it is second nature and the outcome for a person is improved,” said David Kanze, DO, who heads up the Family Medicine Residency Program at Skagit Regional Health.

Funded by a grant Dr. Kanze applied for through the Family Medicine Residency Network based at the University of Washington, the new simulation lab at Skagit Valley Hospital is now equipped with a “sim” adult, baby and child, along with other apparatus for practicing IV starts, intubation and other procedural techniques.

“Simulations promote standardization in communication and procedures that improves safety and outcomes,” said Chief Medical Officer Connie Davis, MD. “It is all about being familiar with your teammates, it is done in teams that would normally be working together.”

The initial focus for training has been on running codes – called in emergency situations for patients who are showing symptoms of a stroke, cardiac arrest or are having difficulty breathing.

“You can read about a code all you want, but until you do it, you are not going to be good at it,” Pediatric Hospitalist Barbara Geraghty, MD said after wrapping up a code on the baby simulator that featured use of CPR, administration of medications and intubation of an infant. “This means everyone is familiar and

Participants in the simulation are coached through the event and prompted to ask questions, evaluate and think.

“Go with what you feel and what you see,” trainer and Clinical Nurse Specialist Lisa Rodgers-Potter, MSN, RN, CEN said to a resident working to insert a breathing tube for the baby simulator.

“This really is hands-on learning.”

“It’s all about everyone having the experience of doing clinical skills in a safe learning environment. The hands-on opportunity combined with the mannequin response to treatment is learning, which transitions into providing safe and competent care for all our patients,” said M. J. Tyler, MN, RN, Director of Nursing Support Services.

As the pediatric simulation wrapped up, residents in attendance expressed appreciation for the opportunity and the chance to get more practice in such a realistic environment.

“The feedback from the residents, staff and providers has been great,” said Emily Wilder, MN, RN, BSN, Medical Surgical Clinical Educator. “We feel very lucky to get to teach with it.”

The simulation lab equipment, which cost more than $1 million and is grant funded, is the culmination of more than two years of work and training.

“This is a major investment in the development of our simulationbased training programs. It’s just phenomenal,” said Joseph Wilson, MD, Director of Medical Education. “The simulation lab benefits not only our residents and other Skagit Regional Health caregivers who utilize simulation training to optimize team performance, but ultimately it’s about providing the best possible care for our patients.”

Funding secured by the Graduate Medical Education Program at Skagit Regional Health has resulted in the purchase of a state-of-the-art SonoSite digital ultrasound unit and a GlideScope for the Critical Care Unit at Skagit Valley Hospital. Both pieces of equipment will serve to enhance patient care in the unit as well as to help educate residents in training.

The scope is used for placing a breathing tube for patients who are having difficulty breathing and need the support of a ventilator. The GlideScope uses a small digital camera at the end of the scope which provides the physician with a much clearer view of the patient’s vocal cords during the procedure.

Using soundwaves, the ultrasound effectively allows a physician to see structures under the surface of the body. This tool is particularly helpful in the performance of some bedside procedures and placement of venous or arterial catheters necessary to treat critically ill patients.

“Ultrasound guidance is the standard of care for these life-saving procedures and that’s what we teach our residents,” said Joseph Wilson, MD, Director of Medical Education.

“We see medical education as a driver of increased quality, patient safety and innovation. Here we have two great benefits out of one acquisition: a positive contribution to both education and to actual patient care.”

What’s new with Graduate Medical Education?

Skagit Regional Health’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program continues to take steps required to be part of a single accreditation system in the United States. The 2014 agreement between the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) means that all residency training programs in the U.S. fall under a single set of accreditation standards effective June 30, 2020.

Founded in 2012, the GME residency programs at Skagit Regional Health are fully accredited by the AOA through 2020. As the first step in the transition process, Skagit Regional Health received institutional accreditation in April 2016 retroactive to July 2015.

“Everything is on track in our transition to the single accreditation system,” said Joseph Wilson, MD, Director of Medical Education. The change will significantly expand the candidate pool for residency positions

at Skagit Regional Health from less than 5,000 to more than 55,000 potential applicants.

Skagit Regional Health currently hosts a total of 30 residents in two, three-year training programs in both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. Since admitting its first residents in 2012, the programs have both seen consistent increases in the number of applications and interviews for prospective participants in the programs.

With the single accreditation system, separate clinic space for the Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residency clinics is required. Family Medicine residents will continue to see patients at the current clinic location at 819 South 13th Street, across the street from Skagit Valley Hospital.

When remodeling is complete in June, Internal Medicine residents will see patients in clinic space on the first floor of Skagit Valley Hospital.

No one wants to be in the hospital, but sometimes patients need the kind of care that only a hospital can provide. The Skagit Regional Health Care Management team of registered nurses supports patients in many different ways by partnering with patients, the hospital team and primary care providers. The team may visit patients during a hospital stay if patients need help with the transition home or reach out by phone after a hospital stay to help patients get back to optimal health, avoid unnecessary trips back to the hospital or emergency room and improve overall patient wellbeing.

In 2017, Skagit Regional Health is participating in a statewide program that helps address end-of-life decisions. Many people may assume their family knows what they want, but have not talked to them about it. Recommendations are that anyone over the age of 18 has an advance directive in their health file.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Advance directives aren't just for older adults.

Unexpected end-of-life situations can happen at any age, so it's important for all adults to prepare these documents.”

Many people with depression are undiagnosed and untreated. When battling with depression, people may not even know the signs. In 2017, Skagit Regional Health is working to ensure patients receive the support and care they need, by having providers ask

A blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher indicates high blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association. First, make sure that reading is correct. Do not smoke, drink caffeine, eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol before you get your blood pressure checked since these factors can make your reading inaccurate. Consult with your primary care provider, use one of the conveniently located blood pressure machines at Skagit Regional Clinics – Mount Vernon, Skagit Regional Clinics - Stanwood or Skagit Valley Hospital main lobby and Kincaid Lobby, or check with a local pharmacy.

Face – uneven smile, facial droop or numbness, sudden change in the way you see

ARM SPEECH TIME

Arm and leg – weakness, numbness, difficulty walking

Speech – slurred, wrong words, or unable to speak

Time – Call 911 immediately; then, check the time so you will know when the first symptoms started.

What are the treatable risk factors for stroke?

High blood pressure. Know your blood pressure. It should be lower than 140/90.

Tobacco use. Cigarette smoking is the No. 1 preventable risk factor.

Heart disease. Common heart disorders: atrial fibrillation, coronary heart disease or heart failure have a higher risk for stroke than hearts that work normally. Working with your doctor to manage heart disease decreases your risk for stroke.

Diabetes. Diabetes causes destructive changes to the vessels throughout the body, including the brain. Treating diabetes can delay the onset of complications that increase the risk of stroke.

Carotid or other vascular disease.

Arteries narrowed by fatty deposits from atherosclerosis may become blocked by a blood clot.

Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).

TIA is a “warning stroke”, sometimes called a “mini-stroke”. Warning signs are the same as stroke but last only a short time and symptoms disappear. They are good at predicting if a stroke will appear but not when it will happen. Call 911 for TIAs as well as strokes.

Physical inactivity and obesity.

Go for a walk, take the stairs and do whatever you can to make your life more active for at least 30 minutes total on all or most days of the week.

Nephrology

Comprehensive care for kidney disease Kidney disease can sneak up on people. It’s not an illness that has a lot of symptoms and is sometimes called a “silent disease.” And yet, about 14 percent of the general population has chronic kidney disease, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Skagit Regional Health is expanding services to assist patients in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease, including the addition of two board certified nephrologists.

“Many people don’t know they have kidney disease unless they have a blood test,” said Nephrologist Mark Baldwin, DO, recommending that patients ask their primary care provider to check their blood pressure and run lab work on a regular basis.

People with family history, high blood pressure or diabetes are at higher risk of developing kidney diseases – risk factors that are prevalent in Northwest Washington, said Nephrologist Wanwarat Ananthapanyasut, MD. “Our goal is to catch patients in the early stages. If we are aware of what’s happening, we can slow down the disease,” Dr. Ananthapanyasut said.

High blood pressure, fluid retention, swelling, blood in the urine or shortness of breath can be symptoms of kidney disease.

Christina Logalbo, MSN, RN, Program Director at the Skagit Valley Kidney Center encourages patients to watch for early warnings, especially around hypertension and diabetes.

“With proper care and proper diet, you can slow the progression or even halt the progression of kidney disease,” she said.

Skagit Regional Health is building a comprehensive program including the outpatient nephrology clinic at Skagit Regional Clinics – Mount Vernon, outpatient kidney dialysis services at the Skagit Valley Kidney Center, support for home peritoneal dialysis and is the regional hub for inpatient dialysis at Skagit Valley Hospital, serving acute care patients from around the region. The nephrology team is also training resident physicians about kidney disease.

“We are really trying to focus on how we can improve our patients’ quality of life,” said Chief Medical Officer Connie Davis, MD, a nephrologist who previously served as Director of the Kidney Care Line and CoDirector of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant program at the University of Washington. “People need to get in to see a nephrologist as soon as they can once kidney disease is recognized.”

Nephrologists can help patients make treatment decisions, including preparing for dialysis or an organ transplant. At Skagit Regional Clinics, Debra Woodard, BSN, RN, CNN, provides triage services for self-referred patients and referring providers along with education, coordination of care and coaching for clinic patients.

Drs. Baldwin and Ananthapanyasut see patients in the clinic and round on patients at the kidney center and in the hospital. They also work a great deal with the team of cardiologists at Skagit Regional Clinics, as heart disease, including congestive heart failure and stroke, can often go hand in hand with kidney disease.

“The same mechanism that causes heart disease has the same effects on the kidneys,” Dr. Baldwin said. “We want to provide comprehensive care for kidney disease.”

Nephrologists also work with patients with lupus, which is also prevalent in our region, when it involves the kidneys, Dr. Baldwin said.

Prevention and selfcare are key to avoiding kidney disease, including exercise, diet, weight management and sleep.

“Healthy food. Exercise. Sleep.

It’s all about the physiology and diseases of the kidneys.

It only takes two to four hours a week to achieve a general improvement to your health. Cycling is:

What do the kidneys do?

• Low impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise.

• A good muscle workout – cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal.

• Easy – unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget.

• Good for strength and stamina – cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist.

They are located just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. The kidneys keep the water content of the body normal and every day, they filter about 120 to 150 quarts of blood to produce about 1 to 2 quarts of urine, composed of wastes and extra fluid.

Why are the kidneys important?

The kidneys are important because they keep the composition, or makeup, of the blood stable, which lets the body function. They prevent the buildup of wastes and extra fluid in the body; keep levels of electrolytes stable and phosphate; and make hormones that help regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells and bones stay strong.

Frankie Elam is back in action Eighty-four year old Frances “Frankie” Elam is back to swimming a half mile several days a week in the YMCA pool, with her sights set on a full mile. The longtime swimming enthusiast was away from the Y for more than two years as she dealt with surgeries and treatment to heal damage to the skin on her right lower leg.

A fair, redhead as a child in New Mexico, she loved to swim, taught swimming lessons to children and spent a great deal of time in the sun.

In her adult years, that sun exposure resulted in skin cancer and damage requiring extensive wound care.

“The big goal was to get me back in the swimming pool,” the now whitehaired resident of Sedro-Woolley said.

The team at the Skagit Wound Healing Center shared her goal and oversaw her treatment from July 2014 through November 2016 to repair a particularly difficult wound on her leg that required surgery by James Edwards, MD, skin grafts, amniotic membrane stem cell dressings, IV antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

“It took every one of our team members to get her better. The Skagit Wound Healing Center goals were aligned with Frankie’s, which were to get her healed and back in the pool,” said center Manager Dennis Reilly, PT, CWS. “Goals are varied among the patients we treat in wound care. Patient involvement in choosing goals drives treatment and ensures patient dignity

and satisfaction. There were some dark days during the pursuit of these goals when treatment seemed futile, but back to the drawing board we went and with minds collaborating together the whole team solved the puzzle. Everyone should be so lucky.”

Medical Director Robert Zwick, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, was among Frankie’s fans to greet her on a visit to the center for a photo session.

“Taking care of someone like Frankie is why you go into medicine,” Dr. Zwick said. “What more could you ask for than to pull off something nice for someone like her. Amazing.”

Frankie readily expresses appreciation for the team.

“This is a wonderful place to come,” she said. “I felt at home here.”

Two sites for wound care

Multidisciplinary teams of providers and staff offer wound care and hyperbaric oxygen treatment at state-of-the-art facilities in Arlington and Mount Vernon.

Skagit Wound Healing Center and Sonya Beard Hyperbaric Oxygen Program in Mount Vernon and the Cascade Valley Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center in Arlington provide comprehensive services for patients with chronic and non-healing wounds. A normal wound will heal in one to two weeks.

A wound that has not healed after this period of time should prompt a visit to your physician and is considered abnormal and chronic.

The teams of providers include surgeons, podiatrists, nurse practitioners, ostomy nurses, RNs, LPNs, CNAs and Certified Wound Specialists.

“We are a team of dedicated providers caring for patients who have challenging wounds,” said Rob Zwick, MD, medical director of the Skagit Wound Healing Center in Mount Vernon. “We have compassion and a vast armamentarium and experience from which to draw to get our patients healed.”

“I am proud to say that Cascade Valley Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center uses a nationally recognized approach to wound healing,” said Teri Burt, RN, CWS, Clinical Coordinator of the Arlington center. “Our award-winning team of providers and clinical staff utilize the most advanced treatments available to get patients literally back on their feet.”

Wounds treated at the centers may include burns, diabetic ulcers, venous stasis, arterial pressure ulcers, lacerations, post-surgical wounds and ostomy care.

Don’t wait to talk about hospice It’s an all too common situation.

A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill and nearing the end of life. Each member of the family has a different idea of what should be done and what the patient would have wanted.

“Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking about what options are available or what care they or their loved ones would have wanted,” said Bob Laws, Executive Director of Hospice of the Northwest.

“Often, by waiting too long to learn about possible options, like hospice care, people end up spending difficult

days in the hospital or the emergency room and opportunities to be with loved ones at home are lost.”

When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, hospice provides the type of care most people say they want at the end of life: comfort and dignity.

Considered to be the model for highquality, compassionate care for people with a life-limiting illness, hospice care includes expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. Care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and trained volunteers.

The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care.

Most hospice care is provided in the home – where data shows the majority of Americans have said they would want to be at this time. Care

is also provided in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and wherever the patient calls home. Care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans and HMOs. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reports that more than 1.5 million people received care from our nation’s hospices last year.

Hospice of the Northwest provides information about care options and choices focused on making sure patients live as fully as possible throughout their entire life, while making sure loved ones receive support as well.

“One of the best ways to make sure to get the full benefit from hospice is to talk about it before it becomes an issue,” Laws said.

A celebration of generosity Staff and trustees of Hospice of the Northwest and the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation gathered on February 23 to thank donors and supporters for the impact their gifts have on patient care.

Hospice staff shared examples of how donor funding helped them to enhance patients' quality of life.

In one example, a social worker shared how donor funding helped her work with a homeless patient to find resources and housing for his final weeks of life.

the funding needed to translate patient and family guidebooks into Spanish and for providing grief and bereavement resources, like the Grief Recovery Method, in Spanish.

Spiritual Counselor, Deana Strom, shared a story about a woman who was hastily moved by her caregivers into a skilled nursing facility without any of her treasured books or clothing. Deana explained that donor funds helped buy this patient some clothing, books and small bedside table. Most importantly, the donor funding provided this woman with dignity and helped her to feel like she mattered, Deana said.

Hospice of the Northwest Assistant Medical Director Dr. Leslie Estep spoke eloquently about how donor funding impacts a whole community of people – patient, people who love the patient, clinicians who work with the patient – and makes all of us stronger.

Hospice of the Northwest Foundation Executive Director Wendy Rohrbacher closed the program by thanking donors and reminding them “your generosity touches more lives than you can imagine.”

• A child or teen is killed by a firearm every eight days in Washington, according to the Children’s Defense Fund.

• Firearms are the primary method of suicide in Washington. A study of adolescent suicides found that more than half were carried out with firearms from their own homes, according to the Washington state Department of Health (DOH).

Safe Firearm Storage event set for Mount Vernon Practicing safe firearm storage is a proven method in keeping children safe from firearm suicide and unintentional shootings, according to Dr. Mark Del Beccaro, Chief Medical Director at Seattle Children’s.

“Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility and storing your firearms safely is just another way to keep kids safe from harm,” Dr. Beccaro said.

Seattle Children’s has been hosting a series of events around the state and will bring a Safe Firearm Storage Giveaway to Mount Vernon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at Coastal Farm and Ranch, 2021 Market Street.

“These events are solely focused on the safety of kids and our communities,” Dr. Beccaro said. “Just like we talk about life jackets, booster seats and sports helmets, we hope to normalize the culture of safety associated with storing firearms safely.”

Manual combination lock boxes, that fit most hand guns, and manual combination trigger locks will be available free of charge, along with training and education.

Seattle Children’s has held 10 events since 2014 and has given away more than 3,000 lock boxes and trigger locks.

“We know that the easy access to firearms in a home is a risk factor for firearm-related death and injury. By providing the tools to safely store firearms in the home, we hope to reduce this risk factor and help prevent firearm-related incidents or firearm violence,” Dr. Beccaro said.

Getting back in the game

When we think about sports injuries, we generally think of professional athletes who compete for a living – the Russell Wilson and Felix Hernandez type athletes. In reality, athletes come in all shapes and sizes, from the runner training for a half marathon to a retiree who enjoys golf. Whether a recreational or a competitive athlete, an injury can be a devastating and difficult journey to navigate.

At Skagit Regional Health, athletes of all levels have a variety of resources and injury treatments available for them at the Skagit Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Department.

“Physical therapy can be a conservative intervention when surgery isn’t necessary,” says Dave Bond, PT, DPT. “Depending on the injury, physical therapy can reduce symptoms and help the patient return to their sport – whether that’s cycling, golfing or any activity they love.”

Bond said he sees a lot of shoulder injuries, as well as lower extremity injuries such as knees, ankles and hamstrings. including ultrasound and soft tissue manipulation.

“We act as a coach, working alongside the patient to help them move safely,” Bond said. “Physical therapy is all about movement. We want to help them be the best version of themselves so they can safely perform over the long term.”

Patients sometimes arrive in rehab post-surgery. In those cases, physical therapists work closely with the surgeon to provide a coordinated care plan. Therapists also look for underlying issues that could make the patient predisposed to future injuries, like imbalances or overcorrections post-injury.

Skagit Regional Health recently built a new sports medicine gym in the Garden Level of Skagit Valley Hospital.

This new facility is a great location for therapy, featuring new equipment and plenty of space for functional movements, balance training, agility and other return-to-play activities.

Therapists also offer runner injury rehabilitation, utilizing video gait analysis to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Jim Geist joins Skagit Regional Health Jim Geist, an experienced health care executive, has joined Skagit Regional Health as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

Geist started on January 16, taking the position previously held by current Skagit Regional Health President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Liepman.

“I see this as a dynamic health care system serving several great communities,” Geist said. “It’s very exciting for me to come work for a public hospital district with two hospitals and a large provider group, where the decisions are all made by the team locally.”

Geist previously served as the Chief Executive Officer at Capital Medical Center in Olympia, a facility with 110 acute care beds, a physician joint venture and 607 employees.

Capital Medical Center has received several recent quality honors, including becoming the third hospital in Washington to achieve a Joint and Spine Center of Excellence, along with rising patient satisfaction scores including a 91st percentile for top box in patients’ “willingness to recommend” the hospital.

“Jim is a proven leader and problem solver with a focus on quality, people, patient satisfaction and financial performance,” Liepman said. “We have served together on the Washington State Hospital Association board and committees and I have found him to be an outstanding leader in health care in our region.”

Geist’s additional previous experience includes serving as interim Chief Executive Officer at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma; Chief Executive Officer for Mountain View Regional Medical Center in New Mexico; and service as Chief Operating Officer for Havasu Regional Medical Center in Arizona, and Valley View Medical Center in Arizona and Colorado River Medical Center in California.

Geist holds a Finance degree and a Master’s in Public Administration, both from the University of Texas, and a Master’s in Health Services Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.

SUCCESS of residency programs Skagit Regional Health’s residency programs have seen remarkable growth and success since the inaugural group of eight residents arrived in June 2012.

Residency is the stage of training following graduation from medical school. It includes a comprehensive three-year learning curriculum, scholarly activities, original research and supervised clinical practice, explained Dr. Joseph Wilson, Director of Medical Education at Skagit Regional Health. At the completion of their three years, each resident sits for a Board certification exam.

Skagit Regional Health’s Graduate Medical Education program has grown to total 30 residents in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine and is an important factor in improving local access to medical care. “Any patient looking for a primary care physician can tell how hard it can be to get an appointment. We’re working hard to change that reality,” said Dr. Wilson.

In addition to growth within the residency programs, multiple graduates have accepted permanent positions on the Skagit Regional Health medical staff and will remain in the local community to build their practice, further improving access to care.

The answer is usually "no." Even after I explain, it seems like a chaotic mix of many different parts of the body. The unifying theme of Endocrinology is "homeostasis" which means, roughly, "keeping things steady."

Whether managing blood sugar, blood pressure, bone density, or body weight, "keeping things steady" is the key to enabling patients to have healthy, productive lives.

Dr. Miller is a graduate of SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and completed residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in New York. Outside of the office, Dr. Miller enjoys sailing, playing the guitar and carpentry projects.

Special Interests: My special interests include Hepatology and Hepatitis C. Why did you choose a career in medicine? I chose a career in medicine because I wanted to help people in a direct manner. Aerospace engineering was my first career, but I did not enjoy it since I did not feel that I was helping people directly.

What do you enjoy most about your practice? I enjoy all aspects of Gastroenterology, but I do particularly enjoy Hepatology. I find it quite gratifying to help someone be cured of a disease, such as Hepatitis C. PA Ramirez is a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. What do you enjoy most about your practice? Without a doubt it is establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with both my patients and their families.

Dr. Litton has lived in the Skagit Valley since 2002. He is a graduate of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima. He spent his third and fourth years of medical school at Skagit Regional Health and remained at SRH for his residency. Do you have any special interests in your practice? I chose Family Medicine because I enjoy working with patients in all phases of life; however, I have special interest in osteopathic manipulative treatments.

Special Interests: I am very excited to work with patients with Hepatitis C as we

now have curative medications with far fewer side effects than those I had available in my former GI practice.

What do you enjoy most about your practice? I find the specialty interesting and challenging.

PA Zellner completed her physician assistant training at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing, kayaking and spending time with her rescue canine companion, Toby.

The 14th annual Have a Heart for Kids benefit dinner held February 27 at Il Granaio Italian Restaurant in Mount Vernon raised more than $15,000 for the Children’s Therapy Program at Skagit Valley Hospital. The Foundation is extremely grateful to Alberto Candivi, chef and owner of Il Granaio, who has hosted the multi-course dinner for all 14 years. The event is sponsored by long-standing Foundation donor TRICO Companies, LLC. The evening included a program overview by Children’s Therapy staff and a video presentation of gratitude for the tremendous support the program receives from this annual special event. Dinner patrons had fun buying chances for unique raffle prizes, mystery box gifts and gorgeous floral centerpieces. Heartfelt thanks also to event chairs Mary June Curtis, Katie Jungquist, Dee Berglin and Jaynie Roozen, raffle prize sponsors and décor sponsors – CF Business Park and Washington Bulb Co., Inc. The Children’s Therapy Program is a clinically based, family-focused program providing one-on-one and small group physical, occupational and speech-language therapy to children with special needs. Services include family education and home programs. Therapists provide more than 600 treatments a month on average for young patients infant to 18 years of age.

MOUNT VERNON Total Joint Replacement Class This two-hour class helps to prepare patients for their upcoming joint replacement surgery. We have incorporated classroom instruction with procedurespecific therapy. You will learn what to expect before, during and after joint replacement surgery.

The class meets the first and third Monday of the month from 1 – 3 p.m. at Cascade Valley Hospital in the Rainier Conference Room.

Patients are scheduled for this class by their Orthopedic provider prior to their planned surgery. There is no charge for this program.

Managing Sports Injuries Whether you are a weekend warrior, a regular exerciser, or a seasoned athlete, you can suffer a sports injury that may limit your ability to be active or compete in your sport. Fortunately, most injuries can be treated effectively, and most people who suffer injuries can return to a satisfying level of physical activity after appropriate treatment, including rehabilitation and surgery.

Christopher Sheu, MD, sports medicine fellowship trainedorthopedic surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics, has extensive experience working with recreational, high school, collegiate and professional athletes who have been injured. His primary goal is to treat the athlete so they are able to safely return to sports and activities as quickly as possible.

Certified Diabetes Education Program Skagit Regional Health offers a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive education program for adults with diabetes, either newly diagnosed or for those patients who want additional guidance to help reduce the risks of long-term complications. The program includes individual and group education.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is available through the program. A small sensor, worn in the abdominal area, measures and stores data for four to five days.

A1C testing is also available.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program This intensive program can help patients with a wide variety of chronic lung disorders including, but not limited to, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic bronchitis or asthma, to reduce respiratory symptoms, improve functional independence and complications and reduce hospitalizations. The Skagit Healthy Beginnings Line is a new information and referral line to help families of pregnant women and young children find helpful activities and services that promote health, development and well-being. PCAP (Parent-Child Assistance Program) PCAP is a research-based program who assists women who have abused drugs and/or alcohol while pregnant to access services in the community. Women who meet the eligibility criteria will receive three years of intensive case management, which includes home visitation, intervention and transportation. PCAP will help clients build and maintain healthy, independent family lives, assuring that children are in safe and stable homes and work with the client to prevent future births of drug and alcohol exposed children.

Cancer Support Group Kidney Failure Treatment Options This Skagit Valley Kidney Center program is for people with reduced kidney function who would like to explore treatment options for renal replacement therapy.

Hospice Program Seeks Volunteers Grief Support Services Hospice of the Northwest provides support to anyone in our communities coping with grief and loss after the death of a loved one. We have trained counselors who have counseling hours from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. We offer drop in groups two times a month. We provide the Grief Recovery Method Support Group throughout the year. The Grief Recovery Method Program provides action choices that help people move beyond the pain caused by loss. It is an eight-week program that creates a safe environment helping one gain new tools for dealing with loss and grief. It is appropriate for any type of loss. Volunteer Services at Skagit Regional Health The Volunteer Services Department at Skagit Regional Health coordinates the activities of over 400 volunteers throughout the organization.

Today’s volunteers are doing work, in core areas, that is vital to the success of our organization.

Whether you’re retired looking to use your experience to give back to your community, looking for job experience, or just wanting to learn more about what the world of healthcare has to offer, volunteering can be rewarding and satisfying.

Some of the volunteer opportunities at Skagit Regional Health include: Information Desk Volunteers

In addition to information desks at Skagit Valley Hospital, Skagit Valley Regional Cancer Care Center and Skagit Regional Clinics Mount Vernon, Volunteer Services also operates a volunteer information desk at SRC in Stanwood and at SRC Smokey Point.

Mail Delivery

Volunteers make a twice-daily circuit to pick up and deliver mail throughout the hospital.

Pianists

We are always looking for new piano players to join the group of volunteers and staff who play our grand piano on a regular basis. If you are an accomplished pianist who would like to share your talent for others to enjoy, call 360-814-2142.

Junior Medical Volunteers

The Junior Medical Volunteer program is for students age 15-18.

The program allows young people an excellent opportunity to explore the culture of a health care organization while giving service to their community. Junior Medical Volunteers work in many areas of Skagit Regional Health.

For Students and Job Seekers

While volunteering can be a great way to explore job opportunities, network or get required school credits, we do ask volunteers to complete a minimum of 100 hours before requesting recommendations or receiving credit for hours volunteered.

As the number of positions is limited, prospective volunteers should apply at least a year in advance of any school deadlines that may be applicable.

High school students seeking course or club credit should apply and begin volunteering before their senior year.

Guilds and Auxiliaries

Many volunteers choose to serve through membership in one of our volunteer service and fundraising groups including the Grace Cochrum Guild, J.E.M. Guild, SVH Auxiliary and SVH Guild.

Gift Shop

The Skagit Valley Hospital Gift Shop has many wonderful retail gift items for sale. The gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.

– 5 p.m. All proceeds from the Gift Shop are returned back to help Skagit Regional Health in areas of need.

New Board member: Julie Blazek Skagit County resident Julie Blazek was appointed in March to fill the vacant position on the Public Hospital District No. 1, Skagit Regional Health Board of Commissioners.

Blazek fills the vacancy on the board left by the January 2017 resignation of 20-year board member Stan Olson who has moved out of state.

Board members expressed appreciation to all five applicants for their high level of interest in Skagit Regional Health and for taking the time to participate in the selection process.

“Given this opportunity to fill a vacancy, the Board followed our

process to make a selection based on the needs of the organization and the community,” said Board member Jim Hobbs. “The Board’s decision to select Julie Blazek as commissioner is based on her unique skill set, keen interest in healthy communities, expertise in planning and design and a strong record of community service.”

Blazek is a partner in HKP Architects based in Mount Vernon. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning and earned a Design Firm Leadership and Management Certificate from the University of Washington.

“I am honored and feel privileged to serve on the Board and I look forward to the opportunity to help guide the hospitals and clinics,” Blazek said. “With the myriad of challenges facing health care, I am interested in working to keep access to quality care available to our entire community.”

Blazek is a board member and the immediate past president of the Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County and has served with many local organizations including Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, Skagit Women’s Alliance Network and the City of Mount Vernon Mainstreet design committee.

Change is a constant at Skagit Regional Health. We have a change in membership on the Board of Commissioners and welcome Julie Blazek. We are also in the midst of a major change to launch a single Electronic Health Record to benefit patients.

At the end of January, we bid farewell to Stan Olson, a 20-year member of the Public Hospital District No. 1 Board of Commissioners. Stan has moved to Montana to pursue new ventures. Stan was appointed in 1997 and was later elected to fill the seat held for 42 years by his father, Rodney Olson, who was one of the three original hospital commissioners when the district formed in 1954.

Stan served with distinction for two decades. He brought an inquiring mind and an approach to the Board that often questioned the status quo and shed light on questions that needed an answer.

He was approachable and seen

by the citizens of the district and greater community as someone who was a great listener and was trusted to represent his constituents well. We look forward to working with Julie as we move forward.

A great deal of hard work is going on around the build and October go live for the new Electronic Health Record. In late 2015, the board approved this major investment to benefit patients in the region. This strategic project supports efforts by Skagit Regional Health to advance medicine and affirms the organization’s goals for patient safety, quality care, system growth and population health.

This new clinical tool will provide a single platform for access to information and data sharing and connectivity with patients across

Skagit Regional Health’s continuum of care, including Skagit Valley Hospital, Cascade Valley Hospital and Skagit Regional Clinics. This is an exciting and significant project to benefit our communities.

We will keep you posted on these and other positive changes going forward.
