The pages of this edition of HealthQuest magazine are absolutely filled with amazing news about people, programs, services, growth and generosity at Skagit Regional Health. Launching a surgical robotic program. Breaking ground on a state-of-the-art imaging center.

Recruiting new providers. Adding a third cardiac cath lab. To say we are excited to share this news with the people and patients we serve is an understatement.

This month, we will begin to offer robotic surgery, using the da Vinci® Xi system. We are fortunate to have several general surgeons who are trained to use this equipment, including our recently fellowshiptrained colorectal surgeon Joel Dean, MD, along with surgeons Allison Porter, MD and Josh Hawkins, MD. Providers in additional specialties, including urology and gynecology, will be among those to use robotics in the near future as our program grows. We also have potential to recruit providers in new specialties using the robotic system, such as thoracic surgery.

The beauty of the program is the benefit to patients who will no longer have to travel outside of our community to receive care when a robotic surgery is right for them. In addition to the benefit of staying close to home, robotic surgical procedures are minimally invasive and patients have less pain, faster recovery times and a shorter stay in the hospital.

Another exciting project we have going is the start to construction for the new Skagit Imaging Pavilion which will be home to the latest in diagnostic imaging, including breast

tomosynthesis (3D mammography).

This project is a partnership between Skagit Regional Health and Skagit Radiology and will also feature MRI, CT, ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsy. The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation is also a partner in this project as the Foundation’s Board of Trustees has pledged to raise $2 million to help equip this facility that will open in fall 2019.

In addition, we are growing services in the north Snohomish County area including orthopedic surgery, midwifery and rehabilitation services, all offered at Cascade Valley Hospital.

We are having a banner year in recruiting new providers, signing 18 through the end of June, who will serve our Arlington and Mount Vernon campuses. However, we know we have more work to do. In this issue, we are introducing you to a new general surgeon, new providers in orthopedics and cardiology, two new oncologists and an orthopedic/spine surgeon.

We are always working to bring on more primary care providers and, of course, we are training 20 future providers, who are currently medical students, and 30 resident physicians in internal and family medicine.

We will keep you updated on all of these projects and developments as we move forward and continue working hard to meet the healthcare needs of the communities we serve.

Skagit Regional Health launches surgical robotics Skagit Regional Health opens a new chapter in the advancement of surgical services this month with the addition of a da Vinci surgical robotic system.

The da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System is used across a broad spectrum of surgical specialties including general surgery, urology, gynecology and other specialties.

Skagit Regional Health will become the first healthcare system north of Everett to offer this advanced, Xi robotic-assisted technology.

Dr. Dean just returned to Skagit Regional Health in August following a one-year Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City. Since 2014, he practiced general surgery at Skagit Regional Health. He said he saw a gap in the specialties available locally and decided to pursue a fellowship in colorectal care with a focus on robotic surgery.

“This community needs a colorectal surgeon. The hardest cases that I encountered when I was practicing here at Skagit as a general surgeon were usually those within the purview of a colorectal surgeon.

Fellow general surgeons Drs. Porter and Hawkins are also trained to use the robotic surgical system and said they are pleased to be part of rolling out the technology to benefit patients.

Dr. Porter, who brought specialty expertise to the Skagit Valley in 2015 after completing an Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgical Fellowship at the University of Washington has special interest in the foregut – which is the esophagus and stomach, the beginning of the digestive tract.

Thus there is synergy in the department with Dr. Dean’s new expertise in colorectal care, which focuses on the hindgut, the end of the digestive tract.

“We already have the skill set and interest from providers that will parlay into a strong program. This will be a huge benefit to patients and will fit well into our practice.

I’m glad to be a part of it,” Dr. Porter said.

Dr. Hawkins noted that the addition of a robotics program demonstrates the evolution and elevation of services available at Skagit Regional Health.

“The surgical services here are evolving and we are becoming more than a community hospital, we are becoming a local referral center that offers specialized surgical services,” Dr. Hawkins said. “This represents an outstanding opportunity for

continuing our evolution and recruitment of additional specialties to meet our community’s needs.

This is a higher level of care that we are excited to bring.”

General Surgery is among the specialties to see the most growth in use of robotics for minimally invasive procedures. Hernia repair, gallbladder removal, cancer surgery and colon resections are among the procedures that benefit from the system’s three-dimensional cameras.

“The image is so crisp. The robot gives me complete control of the camera, rather than having to rely on an assistant, and the instruments are precisely articulated to allow very fine, detailed surgery.” Dr. Dean said.

“It’s exciting to see all these benefits and see the patients do so well.”

Dr. Porter described the improved image as the difference between watching a 2-D and a 3-D movie. “It is much easier to determine the distance of movement when watching on a three-dimensional, rather than two-dimensional, screen. This will be a definite improvement beyond standard laparoscopy,” she said.

“Plus, there are things the robot can do that human hands cannot.”

Dr. Hawkins said the view brings a safety component as well.

“The 3-D camera is amazing,” he said. “I have visualization of structures that were impossible to see with our previous technology.

This allows for safer surgery.”

The camera allows views of tight spaces in the body to allow for precision, safety, and the ability to protect nerves and preserve bowel and bladder control following some colorectal procedures.

“Robot-assisted surgery unquestionably gives superior visualization, especially when working deep down in the pelvis,” Dr. Dean said. “The articulating instruments also allow me, when working in tight spaces such as the pelvis, to accomplish things that I would otherwise not be able to do in a minimally invasive approach.”

The da Vinci system features three main pieces: • The Surgeon Console where a physician is seated in the operating room and views high-definition, 3-D images on a monitor while using foot pedals and finger instruments to remotely control the camera and surgical instruments.

• The Patient-side Cart with overhead arms, mounted on a boom, is designed to hold threedimensional cameras and surgical instruments at the surgical site.

• The computer “tower” to support the robotic system.

Drs. Porter and Hawkins have recently completed additional training in robotic surgery and say they find they are enjoying the opportunity to learn new techniques.

“The robot is intuitive and it makes sense to me as a surgeon,” Dr. Hawkins said. “It’s like using a new tool to do things we already do.”

“I want to avoid stagnation over the course of my career, and have an open mind to a better way to perform surgery,” Dr. Porter said.

“Medicine is constantly improving through change, and as surgeons, we should too. It is very exciting to have technology with better visualization and ergonomics.”

Surgeons sit at a console that adjusts to the individual provider’s settings during robotic surgery to control the intricate instruments and camera, which is easier on the surgeon’s body as well.

All three surgeons agree that they are pleased to bring a new, higher level of technology and surgical procedures to the people of the region.

“I am really excited that Skagit decided to pursue a robotics program. We are bringing in the newest and the best equipment so we do it right,” Dr. Dean said. “I don’t think patients should have to go to Seattle.

This allows us to close that gap. There’s very little they can do in Seattle that we can’t do in Skagit.”

All three are open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

Those suffering from flu symptoms who are over age 65, pregnant or who have a chronic illness and need medical attention, should be directed to go to the nearest Emergency Room.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends people “Take 3” actions to fight the flu: 1. Take time to get a flu vaccination.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against the flu virus.

2. Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Stay home from work if you have symptoms – at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• Wash hands frequently and thoroughly (two verses of “Happy Birthday” is the right duration).

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects – at home and work – that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

3. Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can be used to treat your illness. Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics.

They are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) and are not available over-the-counter.

Nurse helps fellow shopper

Janelle Saville, RN was doing some shopping recently at Bellingham’s WinCo with two of her three children when she heard a strange yell.

“I heard someone yell and the sound gave me goosebumps,” she said.

“Then I heard the sound again.”

A Registered Nurse who works in the Medical and Pediatric Care unit at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Janelle gave her children instructions to stay put while she investigated what was going on. She found a group of people gathered around a gentleman who was on the floor, bleeding from his mouth and unresponsive.

Janelle’s compassion for others and health care training kicked into gear.

She started by performing CPR and stayed with the man until paramedics arrived.

“People didn’t know what to do and no one was helping him,” she said. “In that moment, you don’t think, you just do.”

CPR quickly worked and the man, who did not speak English, started breathing again and he looked into Janelle’s eyes. She knew she had just played a role in saving a life.

“You have no idea what that feels like,” she said. “That’s a nice gentle reminder of my purpose and why I am a nurse. It was a very big eye opener for me. I am glad I was there that day.”

Janelle also encourages everyone to get CPR training.

“We need to get our community members into CPR training,” she said.

“It’s something we should all know how to do.”

launches spine service Skagit Regional Health will launch a new service with the September arrival of orthopedic and spine fellowship trained surgeon Richard Manos, MD. Dr. Manos, who has a special interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery, built spine programs at two facilities in Idaho and said he looks forward to the opportunity to do so in northwest Washington.

“The goal is to build the program so we do not have to refer patients elsewhere and can care for them here in our community,” Dr. Manos said, noting the infrastructure, primary care provider base and patient population are all here to support a program. “This feels like a great fit and I love building and growing programs. When I visited, I could see that this is a healthcare system that is here to take care of our loved ones and the community.”

Dr. Manos said he looks forward to a comprehensive program working with patients who have scoliosis, degenerative conditions of the spine, failed spinal surgery, cervical spine issues and trauma.

While Dr. Manos is a spine surgeon, he has a keen focus on nonoperative care options for patients with spine issues or injuries, including

physical therapy, chiropractic care, pain management and injections.

“Surgery really becomes a small part of the picture,” he said. “I embrace the non-operative end and understand that those care options must be well coordinated so the patient receives the full continuum of care with the goal of returning to an active and pain-free lifestyle.”

Dr. Manos was most recently a partner at the Spine Institute of Idaho, a four-surgeon private practice with two locations. He helped launch spine programs at Boise Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in Boise and West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell, Idaho.

Dr. Manos received his Doctor of Medicine at Michigan State University and performed an internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He completed a neurospine fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Manos served 16 years in the U.S. Navy.

Away from work, Dr. Manos is an avid outdoorsman. He and his wife, who is originally from Bellingham, have two children ages 4 and 6.

Orthopedic surgeon loves “fixing” people

Experienced sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon Gerard Benecki, MD joins Skagit Regional Health – Arlington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine this month.

Dr. Benecki and Stephen Roesler, MD provide services in the clinic located at 328 S. Stillaguamish Avenue, adjacent to Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington.

Dr. Benecki has more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy and said he is looking forward to building a sports medicine surgical practice with a focus on comprehensive shoulder care, general orthopedics and trauma care.

Dr. Benecki graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a general surgery internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri and a sports medicine fellowship at Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital and the University of Cincinnati. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Benecki said the decision to specialize in orthopedics was developed over time during medical school where “I found myself very comfortable in the operating room and enjoyed the pace and work involved in surgery” followed by his internship.

During a stint at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, he worked as a Battalion Surgeon embedded with the Marines. “I went everywhere they went, providing primary care to the Marine units I was assigned to in all environments. It was there that I made the decision to specialize in orthopedic surgery,” he said. “I was responsible for the primary evaluation and treatment

Stephen Roesler, MD, became a permanent part of Skagit Regional Health’s Arlington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine program in April.

Dr. Roesler is a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine.

He completed a Family Practice internship at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center, both in California.

His interest in medicine was sparked by an uncle’s career. “I had an uncle who was a missionary doctor in Nigeria and he came back with stories of his work that inspired me to want to do the same,” Dr. Roesler said. “That was when I was 8 years old and it has stuck with me ever since. I still talk with him occasionally and he has been my inspiration.”

As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Roesler said he enjoys the opportunity to help people return to activity.

“I love fixing people when they are injured,” he said. “People come when they are hurt and I can make it better.

It’s the coolest job ever.”

Dr. Roesler has special interests in fracture repair and joint replacement, especially fixing joint replacements that have failed.

Outside of the office, Dr. Roesler enjoys Motocross, biking, hiking and spending time with his two boys.

Orthopedic surgeon enjoys serving athletes

for all medical conditions, but the musculoskeletal injuries made up the largest proportion of work.

Having done rotations in ortho as a student and intern, it was something I felt confident with. The application of mechanics in the realm of surgery worked well in my mind, so the concepts appealed to me.”

A special interest for Dr. Benecki is providing sideline coverage for local sports teams. He has experience with high school football and wrestling and Division 1 college level football, basketball, baseball, soccer and boxing.

“My fellowship in sports medicine in Cincinnati was one of the most rewarding years of my professional career to date,” he said. “In addition to a very busy clinical and surgical experience, I was able to participate in covering the University of Cincinnati football, basketball and baseball teams. I witnessed some amazing come backs and fantastic finishes.”

He was a member of the medical crew providing court-side coverage for the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Cincinnati which draws many star tennis players in advance of the US Open, as well as supporting a professional beach volleyball event.

“I enjoy being on the sidelines.

There’s something rejuvenating about the atmosphere, a sense of belonging to the team that is rewarding,” he said. “I’m hoping to make that a part of my practice in Arlington. I’d like to develop relationships with the local schools and do my best to provide coverage when and where I can.”

Away from work, he is a sports enthusiast and enjoys golf, fishing, camping, visiting national parks and music performances.

Darcy Wells of La Conner, a patient at Skagit Regional Health’s Cancer Care Center, returned to rowing and good health.

Finish Strong Darcy Wells’ story of cancer and care At age 72, Darcy Wells of La Conner had a triple negative breast cancer diagnosis and a decision to make. This form of cancer could be aggressive, fast growing and difficult to treat. Time was of the essence.

Almost to the day, she’d been a widow for one year and was just getting her life back. The news in 2016 came as a frightening shock.

First, she wanted a second opinion. Familiar with both Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), she weighed her options carefully. Knowing that Skagit Regional Health’s Cancer Care Center in Mount Vernon has a network membership with SCCA and is located in her own area at Skagit Valley Hospital, a world away from Seattle’s urban hub, she embraced the care she found closer to the comforts of home.

An essential component to Wells’ healing process was the proximity Skagit Regional Health provides.

“One of the most important factors of cancer care being here in Skagit Valley is the fact that it allowed me to be at home with the full support of family and friends,” she recalled.

Wells immediately reached out to Dominique Dailly, Program Manager and former Patient Navigator at The Breast Institute. Dailly came aboard Skagit Regional Health’s team in 2006, where she identified patients’ needs and co-created the Patient Navigator position with Oncologist Theodore Kim, DO. According to Dailly, “Darcy contacted me immediately and said: ‘I’ve just been diagnosed with breast cancer: what do I do?’ ” Dailly was able to explain the multi-disciplinary approach to breast cancer and how The Breast Institute works. Directly after their initial call, Dailly went to work assembling Wells’ physician team and their conversations continued. “We walked hand in hand during her treatment,” Dailly recounted.

After committing to Skagit Regional Health, within one week, Wells had five body scans and a whirl of doctor’s appointments (including a second opinion at Seattle’s Swedish Medical Center).

“The doctors here (at Skagit Regional Health), after diagnosis, moved so rapidly,” she recalled. She was relieved to be so close to quality care she trusted. “I used to do business in Seattle and drive, sometimes, five times a week. The realization that I live in La Conner and can drive across the valley for nine miles and be here, connected to this facility that is linked to Fred Hutch and the University of Washington - that’s as good as it gets,” she said.

A formula of familiarity with her surroundings, logistical ease around transportation, a strategized physical and mental routine, as well as a solid personal support system, promoted her confidence as she faced a series of strong chemotherapy treatments.

“My daughter, Stacy, would often sit through infusions with me and take me home and my son, Steven, would join me at my appointments.

Stacy also orchestrated family and friends to bring dinner to me for the first two months when I was in the midst of really heavy chemo,” Wells said with gratitude.

There wasn’t a time when she found herself alone. Her neighbor, Katy Jensen always drove her to appointments and her children were great sources of strength, as well as her sister, cousin and close friends. Based on her doctor’s recommendation, due to the high dosage of chemotherapy she received, someone always stayed with her for the first four days after each treatment.

Walking three miles with her neighbors each morning was another powerful touchstone.

Fortunate to have, “a fabulous network of friends,” Wells was encouraged to use CaringBridge, (a free online personalized health journal service for people facing health challenges), as a way of generating more strength and support for what lie ahead. She found solace in being able to openly and honestly express and document what happened throughout all the major steps of her cancer journey.

In addition, the resource provided a cancer network component, where friends were able to share specific cancer information and a wide range of suggestions.

A close family friend’s daughter from Calgary, Canada, shared she’d just had another friend diagnosed with the same type of cancer. She sent a list of suggestions, inclusive of a suggested treatment for neuropathy (identified as a potential side effect of the chemotherapy drug Taxol). The information emboldened Wells to take proactive measures with her own care.

During infusions, she asked her Oncologist Mehrdad Jafari, MD to have her hands and feet put on ice in an attempt to prevent neuropathy from occurring. Although it wasn’t a practice he’d implemented

previously, Dr. Jafari explained the potential benefits and helped facilitate the procedure. “I can tell you today, I have no neuropathy in my hands and feet,” Wells attested.

“The nurses, every single nurse I saw each Monday, would help facilitate and were in total support of what I did,” she added.

Staying active was her creed throughout her treatment. “If this counts as an activity . . . attending my six grandchildren’s sporting events also kept me going, and I tried to attend everything I could,” she said with a laugh.

Wells is also an avid rower.

Since 1948, she and her family have retreated to Idaho’s Priest Lake every summer. She keeps her rowing shell stored there, a place where memory and beauty converge, patiently awaiting her seasonal return. “My goal, even though I was in the middle of five months of chemotherapy treatment, was to be there a number of days, so early in the morning, I could be on that beautiful, pristine lake, in my rowing shell, and just see those oars dip in the water,” she remembered.

Dr. Jafari was supportive of his patient seeking the lifeaffirming calm of distant waters.

The inspiration she found in her boat reflected the tenacity she demonstrated in returning to finish her chemo. Moving forward toward the horizon of a cancer-free diagnosis was her destination.

“The doctors truly helped me accomplish that goal, and Dr. Jafari was wonderful in that regard, in all regards really; I just adore him,” she confided.

“I don’t think I could’ve gotten better care and support anywhere.”

After nine months of treatment, just two days shy of 2017, Wells was cancer free.

Pair of experienced oncologists to serve Skagit Regional Health patients Two experienced oncologists, one from Bellingham and the other from Memphis, arrived in August 2018 to serve patients at Skagit Regional Health’s Cancer Care Center.

Patrick Nestor, MD and Junfeng Wang, MD, PhD, are both board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine.

They join Mehrdad Jafari, MD, Kiarash Kojouri, MD and Bruce Mathey, MD in providing care to medical oncology patients at the Cancer Care Center in Mount Vernon and Smokey Point.

Dr. Nestor has been practicing oncology and hematology at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center in Bellingham since 2003. Originally from the Midwest, lab work on the molecular genetics of lung cancer and his mother’s job as an oncology nurse piqued his interest in specializing in cancer care.

He is a graduate of the University of Chicago, earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and completed a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Nestor said he likes the community cancer center model and notes that he is joining a “fantastic group” of providers and staff at the Skagit Regional Health Cancer Care Center.

“This is a really good situation for me. It’s a fantastic group, everyone is nice, friendly and professional and I will be providing the same broad range of care for patients,” Dr. Nestor said.

Dr. Nestor said working with oncology patients means setting goals and developing a plan to reach them.

“I really look at it as being honest with myself and my patient to look at what we are trying to achieve. Is it a cure? Is it prolonging survival? Is it to make people comfortable? As long as I am honest and in agreement with the patient in what we want to achieve together, we will get there,” Dr. Nestor said.

Dr. Nestor is married and has four children. He enjoys many Pacific Northwest activities including kayaking, running, skiing and hiking.

Dr. Wang grew up in China and moved to the United States in 1997. For the past three years, he has been a medical oncologist and hematologist at The West Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, with previous experience at VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, Huntsman Cancer Hospital in Salt Lake City and the University of Washington.

He is a graduate of West China University of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, both in China. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Greenwich Hospital, part of the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and studied hematology and oncology at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington.

Dr. Wang said the field of oncology is advancing quickly, especially in the past five years.

“With the current state of medicine and the new developments in oncology, it’s very exciting,” he said. “For some cancers, we are learning so much more about oral medications while in others new check point inhibitors have provided hope for long-term remission and possible cure.”

Dr. Wang enjoyed his three-year Fellowship training at Fred Hutch in Seattle and he has maintained ties to colleagues there in the years since. Some of his same-year fellows are now actively conducting research and providing medical care. He said it is good to know that Skagit Regional Health is a network member of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance which includes Fred Hutch, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s.

“I am happy to have that relationship with Fred Hutch and SCCA,” Dr. Wang said. “If I know someone in an academic center, it’s easier to discuss cases and make referrals. It’s very helpful for our patients.”

Dr. Wang said he sees Skagit Regional Health as the “perfect place for me,” because of the community’s size, access to metropolitan areas and the mix of patient cases. “I enjoy seeing a variety of different cancers,” he said.

Dr. Wang, his wife, and one son will make the trip west, while a second son attends college in Michigan. Away from work, Dr. Wang enjoys travel and makes regular visits to see his parents in China.

He enjoys history and reading.

Amazing imaging of the heart New cardiac catheterization equipment brings latest technology When Interventional Cardiologist Sanjeev Vaderah, MD performs a procedure to diagnose and treat a heart problem, he wants to have clear, focused images of the arteries and veins. Those images are key to his ability to identify a blockage or narrowing of an artery and take the next step to fix the problem.

Installation of new equipment, a Siemens model Artis Zee, will wrap up later this month in the cardiac catheterization lab at Skagit Valley Hospital and brings the latest in cardiac imaging for heart patients.

“The technology for imaging has improved a great deal,” said Dr. Vaderah. “Good imaging allows us the ability to see better and work with greater precision.”

Dr. Vaderah is joined by Kamol Lohavanichbutr, MD and Elizabeth Gauer, MD as interventional cardiologists who work in the cath labs to open patients’ clogged arteries. The labs are also used by interventional radiologists and electrophysiologist Ramy Hanna, MD, who focuses on electrical issues of the heart and implants pacemakers.

Skagit Valley Hospital has three cardiac catheterization labs and serves as a referral center for stable and emergent heart patients in Skagit, Island and north Snohomish counties. Approximately 800 patients per year are seen in the cath labs.

“As an interventional cardiologist, this new technology will allow me to better visualize a blockage so I can diagnose and remedy the problem and provide excellent care to our patients,” said Kamol Lohavanichbutr, MD. “Skagit Valley Hospital is the only facility in the area equipped with cardiac cath labs and we continue to advance care for heart patients in the region.”

In addition to improved images, the new equipment requires less radiation for the patient and allows the providers to perform more technical procedures.

“Our case complexity continues to go up and we are tackling cases here that we previously sent elsewhere because we have the latest equipment and our providers are highly skilled,” Dr. Vaderah said.

Cardiac catheterization is used for a variety of procedures including angioplasty, when a tiny balloon is inserted at the site of a blockage, or an angioplasty with a stent, which involves the insertion of a small metal coil into the artery to keep it open. Skagit Valley Hospital has a very strong program with a “door to balloon” time in the Emergency Department of 70 minutes, well below the national target of 90 minutes, Dr. Vaderah said.

Ten new residents join Skagit Regional Health Skagit Regional Health now hosts 30 resident physicians in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Ten first-year residents arrived in late June bringing the total to 12 Family Medicine and 18 Internal Medicine providers.

Residents are physicians who have graduated from medical school and have entered into a three-year period of advanced training in a medical specialty. Residents see patients, under the guidance of a supervising physician, and many are accepting new patients.

2 - Christopher Crudder, DO hails from Ann Arbor, MI and graduated from Colorado State University with a dual degree in microbiology and biological sciences. In 1997, he moved to Seattle where he began his molecular biology career. In 2002, he moved to Nairobi, Kenya to study the immunology of neonates exposed to HIV. He earned a Master’s in Infectious Disease Control from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and returned to Kenya to work on a malaria clinical trial in school-based health programs. In 2006, he returned to Seattle to work for a global health non-profit. He attended Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) in Yakima and completed his clinical training at Skagit Regional Health.

5 - Mary Ezeanuna, DO was born in Macon, Georgia, grew up in Nigeria and moved back to the United States at the age of 13 to continue her education in California. She is a graduate of UCLA and worked as a certified nursing assistant in various hospitals in the Los Angeles area while attending college. After graduating, she worked as a research associate in bio-pharmaceutical companies in California and Ohio prior to medical school at Lincoln Memorial University-Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Before graduating from college, he became a certified personal trainer, which is what sparked his interest to become a physician. He graduated from University of Pikeville - Kentucky College of Medicine with a degree in osteopathic medicine.

What sparked your interest in medicine as a career? I became interested in medicine after reading a book called “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” by Anne Fadiman.

The book is about the difficulties navigating cultural differences in health care – it’s never just about the medical or technical knowledge; to treat someone, you have to take into consideration the whole person.

What do you enjoy most about urology? The interesting aspect in the field of Urology is the diversity of patients and pathology that one can encounter on a daily basis. One can encounter patients through any stage of life beginning with the newborn, to the young man/woman, to even the elderly patient. We have the unique opportunity to develop relationships throughout our patient’s life and be a part of their medical care.

I first learned of the physician assistant profession while in the military. I always enjoyed medicine and had great respect for the role that the PAs had in the military. Arlington podiatrist joins Skagit Regional Health With a passion for educating patients and a love of new techniques, Michael Riojas, DPM has been practicing podiatry for 21 years.

His interest was piqued early on in high school when his sister underwent a bunion surgery. After studying chemistry and physical anthropology at the University of Washington, Dr. Riojas attended Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.

His training continued with a rotating Podiatric Residency at Anaheim General Hospital in Anaheim, California.

He was then fortunate enough to be accepted into the post graduate Podiatric Surgical Residency program at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Affiliate Hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Riojas, who has had a longtime private practice in Arlington, joins Skagit Regional Health this month as part of Arlington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

“I hope to bring a whole different perspective to how the foot affects every joint of the body,” Dr. Riojas said. “A fresh set of eyes looking at the foot and the ankle as a pathway to other orthopedic problems. It’s going to be a collaborative team effort, seeing the whole body from the ground up.”

As former University of Washington football player and with a high school son following in his footsteps, Dr. Riojas is no stranger to sports injuries such as ankle reconstructions, ankle scopes and stabilizations.

Although he loves getting players back on the field, he says his truly favorite cases have to be flat feet.

If diagnosed early on, flat feet can be treated with interventional methods, however, if these cases are ignored they can lead to lifelong problems that surgical intervention would be necessary to correct.

Along with his clinical days at Skagit Regional Health – Arlington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Dr. Riojas performs surgeries at Cascade Valley Hospital and rotates to the Cascade Valley Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center on Wednesday mornings to treat foot and ankle wounds.

Dr. Riojas said he likes to spend time with patients educating them on how feet can affect all aspects of a person’s health. His goal is to help them prevent future injuries and get them back to living their lives.

Fear of falling Know the risks and prevention tips Anyone can fall and become injured; however, as people age they are more likely to fall and are more likely to suffer serious injuries from a fall.

The most common type of fall is a ground-level fall, which happen when a person is doing normal activities such as walking, getting in or out of the shower or bending over to pick something up off the floor.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (2017), more than one out of four people 65 years and older fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Worse yet, for people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency room visits and accidental deaths.

Risk Factors The risk factors for a fall vary widely from person to person.

However, older age, poor health, osteoporosis and a history of falls are common risk factors. Further, if a person does not have a lot of muscle strength, especially in their legs, the person is likely to suffer from bad balance, which can cause a fall. Taking certain medications for blood pressure, heart issues, diuretic or water pills and muscle relaxers can also increase a person’s risk for falls. Those who take any of these medications should talk to their provider about how it may contribute to your risk of falling.

What can you do to prevent falls?

1. PREVENTIVE CARE: By keeping upto-date on your annual physicals, eye exams, hearing tests and bone-density screenings, you can better understand your risk and prevent falls.

2. HOUSE READY: Falls often occur in the home because that is where we feel most comfortable and we might not be as careful when walking near obstacles. It is common to trip over items such as area rugs, ottomans, pets and open dishwasher doors.

3. ASSISTIVE DEVICES: There are many types of assistive devices, such as bench transfers, raised toilet seats, and sit/stand transfer aids, which can help to reduce your risk of falling.

Those who feel unsteady getting in and out of the shower, up and down off the toilet, or in and out of bed, should tell their doctor and ask about an assistive device.

4. COMMUNITY CLASSES: Local community groups offer many classes to help people strengthen their muscles and improve balance. Look for classes that focus on those elements.

Some examples are yoga, tai chi and water aerobics.

How to Fall Injuries suffered from a fall can severely affect a person’s quality of life. Many people who suffer a serious fall do not recover the same quality of life they had before the fall. The following tips are from the AARP article “The Art of Falling” (2017), to help avoid injury while falling: 1. STAY BENT: If you feel you are beginning to fall, bend the knees and elbows to help soften the impact of the fall. Going rigid increases the impact and the risk of injury.

2. PROTECT YOUR HEAD: If you are falling forward, turn your face to the side. If you are falling backward, tuck your chin to your chest.

3. LAND ON THE MEATY PARTS OF YOUR BODY: If you can position yourself to fall on your butt or thighs, you are less likely to break a bone.

4. KEEP FALLING: It is an instinct to prevent yourself from falling. However, if you feel yourself falling, it is safer to give into the fall. While this might not seem safer, when you try to prevent your fall your body goes rigid, which increases your risk of injury. Try rolling with the fall in order to spread the impact across your whole body rather than to one concentrated location.

Skagit Regional Health partners with YMCA Skagit Regional Health will offer sports medicine and orthopedic physical therapy in the new Skagit Valley Family YMCA when the facility opens in spring 2019.

The new 57,000 square foot YMCA is under construction at 1901 Hoag Road in Mount Vernon. The new YMCA will feature an aquatic center, gym, community room, learning kitchen, “Kids Zone,” changing rooms and a wellness center with a running track and exercise equipment.

Skagit Regional Health will occupy approximately 1,600 square feet on the first floor for physical therapy services.

“This setting really suits the needs of our patients as it offers a convenient space where our physical therapists can work with patients, who can then also access the equipment and facilities of the YMCA in the same building,” said Candace Wittenberg, Director of Rehabilitation Services for Skagit Regional Health.

“There is a natural connection between our two programs that benefits the patients we serve.”

More than 60 percent of patients seen for physical therapy do so for sports or orthopedic injuries, Wittenberg said.

In the future, Skagit Regional Health is looking to expand services at the site by starting an aquatics program using the YMCA pool facilities, Wittenberg said.

YMCA officials say they are delighted with the partnership and future potential opportunities to work together.

“What a privilege it is to serve our Skagit communities together in partnership with Skagit Regional Health. The Skagit Valley Family YMCA is grateful for the many partnerships that have made this new building possible,” said Dean Snider, the YMCA’s new Chief Executive Officer. “Teaming together in this new fabulous building will facilitate a seamless transition from injury rehabilitation through to healthy lifestyle fitness routines and effective injury or re-injury prevention. There may be other ways that, in working together, we can benefit residents of Skagit Valley.

We look forward to exploring those possibilities.”

Skagit Regional Health Employees Give Back!

The incredible employees of Skagit Regional Health gave back generously during the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s 2018 Employee Giving Campaign titled “Lend A Hand.”

Employees gave donations and pledges, totaling $21,626. Many contributed by participating in the Foundation’s special events – a Kettle Corn Day at Skagit Valley Hospital and a BBQ lunch at Cascade Valley Hospital.

Others gave gifts through payroll deductions, cashed out vacation time and direct gifts.

All funds raised were designated to various areas of Skagit Regional Health, providing program support and equipment purchases. These gifts support the Foundation’s mission, assuring the availability of quality health care and programs for the patients we serve.

The Foundation is grateful to Skagit Regional Health employees for their continued generosity.

Burlington-Edison High School Students from the Burlington-Edison High School ASB class (above) recently toured Skagit Regional Health’s Cancer Care Center and presented a check for $720 to the Foundation’s Cancer Care Patient Assistance Fund. The American Cancer Society estimates there were 6,000 new breast cancer diagnoses in Washington State in 2017, and in that same year, Skagit Regional Health’s Cancer Care Center treated 224 women for breast cancer.

CASCADE VALLEY HOSPITAL WOUND CARE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS The Cascade Valley Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center in Arlington celebrated 20 years of service to patients with an open house in April. In addition to the anniversary, center staff was celebrating receiving the 2017 Center of Distinction Award from Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. The center achieved outstanding clinical outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent, to earn the award.

SKAGIT REGIONAL HEALTH SUPPORTS CAMP KOREY Skagit Regional Health volunteers are supporting Camp Korey in many ways.

The Skagit Valley Hospital Gift Shop volunteers made a gift of $5,000 in May to Camp Korey. The gift is from proceeds from sales in the Gift Shop. Director of Volunteer Services Steve Schultz noted that the volunteers heard about Skagit Regional Health’s efforts to raise funds for Camp Korey during Healthcare Week and wanted to be part of the effort. CEO Brian Ivie, right, was among those to gather in celebration of the donation and to say thank you to the volunteers.

Skagit Regional Health staff also raised funds and purchased items on Camp Korey’s “wish list” for Healthcare Week.

Several staff members, including Kandi DeVenere, MN, RN, Director of Urgent Care and Rayan Carter, third year Pacific Northwest University medical student, spent a weekend volunteering at the camp designed for children living with severe medical conditions.

Camp Korey, which recently relocated to Skagit County, “empowers children and families living with serious medical conditions through year-round, lifechanging experiences, always free of charge.”

COLOR VIBE DRAWS CROWD IN ARLINGTON NURSE EARNS EMERGING NURSE LEADER AWARD Skagit Valley Hospital Nurse Manager Tiffany Russell, MSN, RN, CCRN-CSC received the Emerging Nurse Leader award from the Northwest Organization of Nurse Executives (NWone) in Stevenson, Washington in May. NWone represents nurse leaders throughout Washington and Oregon and is affiliated with the American Organization of Nurse Executives.

Russell was honored with this prestigious award at the NWone Annual Conference, recognizing her transformational approach to leadership on a 31-bed medical telemetry unit at Skagit Valley Hospital. Russell has 17 years of experience as an RN and obtained

her Masters in Nursing in 1996.

She became Nurse Manager of the Medical and Pediatric Care (MPC) unit in July of 2017, a unit caring for patients with diverse and complex medical issues “Tiffany has a vitality that has refreshed and energized those she manages. The focus she has on providing a safe, quality patient experience is transforming her unit,” said M.J. Tyler, VP Chief Nursing Officer of Skagit Valley Hospital.

Fellow Nurse Manager Bryce Dickie, MN, RN, CMSRN was nominated for the Emerging Nurse Leader Award and Karen Watkins, MSN, RN, CCRN was nominated for the Authentic Leadership Award.

Dozens of Skagit Regional Health employees from across the system joined in the Arlington Color Vibe 5K in April. Runners and walkers were covered in colored powders by the end of the route, which passed by Cascade Valley Hospital. The event was supported by the Skagit Regional Health Wellness Advisory Team.

SIX CLINICS RECEIVE IMMUNIZATION AWARDS

DISASTER DRILL TESTS PREPAREDNESS Employees at Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington and Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon joined in a disaster drill training exercise in May in conjunction with

Naval Station Everett. Staff at both hospitals activated decontamination protocols when mock patients were received following a chemical exposure at the military base.

Six of Skagit Regional Health’s outpatient clinics received awards through the 2018 Immunize Washington provider recognition program. The criteria for the childhood immunization honors were the percentage of a clinic’s 24to 35-month old patients who are current with seven immunization schedules. Skagit Regional Clinics Family Medicine Residency Clinic had the highest immunization rate at 75 percent and Granite Falls Family Medicine, Darrington Family Medicine, Arlington Pediatrics, Riverbend Pediatrics and Benson Family Medicine were all above 70 percent.

Pet Peace of Mind

New program cares for hospice patients’ beloved pets Barbara woke up and turned slowly to look at the other side of the bed.

Tango was curled under the covers with her head resting on the pillow, purring. Moving slowly, Barbara painfully reached over with arthritic fingers to rub between Tango’s ears, reminiscing about their time together.

Eight months after her second husband died, this young kitten had shown up on the porch, demanding attention. In the last six years they’d been through a lot and with this recent cancer diagnosis Barbara was troubled about the uncertain future. Tears gathered in her eyes as she worried about what would happen to her precious Tango.

People bond with pets in much the same way they bond with family.

It is not surprising that during the most important and challenging life stage – the end-of-life journey – that pets can play a critical role.

“For many patients, keeping a beloved pet nearby during this journey with hospice is a significant part of providing compassionate

and dignified care,” said Bob Laws, Executive Director of Hospice of the Northwest. “Finding the pet a home after they pass may be one of the most important pieces of unfinished business that worries a patient.”

Now, thanks to the combined efforts of Erin Long, Volunteer Manager of Hospice of the Northwest, key members of the management team and support from donors in our community, Hospice of the Northwest is launching a new program aimed at helping hospice patients care for their pets.

Pet Peace of Mind recognizes and actively supports the unique human-animal bond like the one Barbara and Tango share.

Hospice of the Northwest’s mission is to provide compassion and dignity every moment of life and aligns with the goal of keeping pets and people together during hospice care, the driving force behind Pet Peace of Mind.

“Oftentimes, the connection between a pet and their

owner is the most comforting relationship at end of life because there are no judgements, only unconditional love,” Long said.

A national nonprofit headquartered in Salem, Oregon, Pet Peace of Mind accepts only qualifying hospice organizations into their program. The initiative provides volunteer pet care services for patients who are unable to care for their animal companions while on hospice. Services include assistance with pet food, routine veterinary care, feeding and walking pets. The tools and training from Pet Peace of Mind provide a framework for volunteers to help patients care for their four-legged family members.

The program enables patients like Barbara to have their closest companion with them at the end of their life. Now, through Pet Peace of Mind, Hospice of the Northwest is able to honor and support that goal.

Enhancing life with Reverie Harps

was not satisfied with randomly plucking the strings and wanted to “play a real song.” Thankfully, the harp came with sheet music (easy to follow diagrams) and Margaret dove right in. This spunky 94-year-old woman mastered “Amazing Grace” and “Camptown Races” within 15 minutes and her joy was evident.

Although Margaret’s memory is very poor and she has never remembered staff names from visit to visit – or even beginning of visit to end of visit - after playing the harp for 30 minutes she said, “thank you, Deana, for bringing the harp.”

Her daughter and I looked at each other with jaws dropped. Learning something new and engaging her brain with music not only improved her self-esteem, reminding her of how capable she is, it improved her memory and quality of life.

So I’m passing on Margaret’s thanks for the gift of a Reverie Harp showing up in her living room every two weeks. I’m tremendously grateful to donors for the ability to purchase them as they are providing delightful opportunities for hospice patients like Margaret to try something new and be amazed by their own capabilities.

Their brains may no longer have the dexterity for assimilating new languages and their bodies have lost the flexibility for new dance moves. And yet, learning or experiencing something new can bring tremendous delight, sense of accomplishment and wonder – those qualities that remind us of who we are and how good it is to be alive.

This sense of wonder and delight was fully evident in Margaret’s face as she learned to play the Reverie Harp.

Thanks to donors, Hospice of the Northwest non-denominational

spiritual counselors have several of these wonderful little harps available to take on patient visits. The counselors either play the harp for the patient or allow the patient to literally “play around” and make some music.

The first time a harp was taken to a visit with Margaret, I thought I would play it softly, providing background music for the simple life review we enjoy. Margaret, however, had other ideas. She smiled and chirped, “Let me try that.” As a former accountant, Margaret is very precise and

Stop the Bleed®: What Everyone Should Know to Stop Bleeding After an Injury

During this free, hands-on training you will learn various ways to control life threatening bleeding after an individual has sustained an injury from an everyday emergency, manmade or from a natural disaster.

You will be given a list of items to create your own Stop the Bleed® emergency kit. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching the civilian population to provide vital initial response to stop uncontrollable bleeding in emergency situations. DIABETES EDUCATION “I have had diabetes for many years, but only in the last eight months has insulin been added to my meds. I would have to think that if I had gone through the Diabetes Education Program earlier in my diagnosis, that perhaps I would not have gotten to this point. My A1c has dropped from 11 in October of 2017 to 6.3 as of Spring 2018.

I am far more conscious now of my eating, water consumption, exercise and medications. I make no claim of 100% adherence to the things I have learned, but the awareness of each element does impact my choices, so that is progress in my mind. (I did buy a resistance band after meeting with Michelle, and so far it looks nice on the couch in my offce....but I do have plans to move it from its resting spot into my hands in the very near future!).

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is available through the program. A small sensor, worn in the abdominal area, measures and

With more than a dozen different “job descriptions,” volunteers offer their skills, support and companionship to staff, families and individuals who are receiving hospice services.

Volunteer training is scheduled a few times a year, with some training available online. A link to the on-line application is available on the website at www.hospicenw.org, then select “How You Can Help” then “Become a Volunteer” and scroll to the “Volunteer Application Packet” at the bottom of the page. In-Service Education We provide continuing education for clinicians and staff on many topics relating to hospice needs. MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SERVICES COMMUNITY RESOURCES Mental Health Support Group NAMI Skagit Open Support Group meets each month on the 4th Tuesday, from 7 - 8:30pm in the Sauk Room at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. Both family members/partners and those living with mental illness are welcome. For more information, contact Marti at 360-770-5666.

Family-to-Family EvidenceBased Education Program Free 12-session (six-week) course for families of adults with mental illness or a brain disorder. The course focuses on helping family members understand the major mental illnesses and maintain their own well-being while providing needed support to their ill family members. This program is provided by NAMI Skagit, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The next course starts Monday, September 17, from 6:30 - 9 p.m. It runs each Monday and Thursday evening through October 25. Peer-to-Peer Education Program FREE 8-week course for adults living with mental illness or brain disorders to help them better understand their illness and maintain and improve their recovery. NAMI Skagit provides this program at no cost. The next course starts Monday, September 10 and goes through Monday, October 29. Parkinson’s BIG® Program

People come to Skagit Valley REACH Center to build confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth, being proactive in their mental health, substance use recovery and personal wellness. This peer-run center provides volunteer opportunities, community resources, housing education, employment education, public computer access, computer classes, goal development, self-supporting recovery and life skills classes and activities. REACH works with individuals age 16 and older. SVRC is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 1413 E. College Way in Mount Vernon.

Skagit Valley Hospital physical therapist Bree Corbin, MPT has completed the required comprehensive hands-on training and testing through LSVT Global to become a certified LSVT BIG clinician. LSVT BIG is a researchbased exercise program focused on amplitude (bigger movement) training for individuals with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease often results in slowing of movements and decreased size of movements leaving the individual struggling with daily tasks and walking. The BIG program focuses on teaching the amount of effort needed to produce normal movements through intensive and high-effort practice. The protocol consists of 16 one-hour sessions, four days a week for four weeks.

WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Workshops The Wellness Recovery Action Plan, or WRAP, is an evidence-based system that is used world-wide by people who are dealing with mental health, substance use and homelessness challenges, and by people who want to attain the highest possible level of well-being. MAKE A DIFFERENCE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Volunteer Services at Skagit Regional Health The Volunteer Services Department at Skagit Regional Health coordinates the activities of more than 400 volunteers.

Today’s volunteers are doing work, in core areas, that is vital to the success of our organization.

Whether you’re retired and looking to use your experience to give back to your community, looking for job experience, or just wanting to learn more about what the world of healthcare has to offer, volunteering can be rewarding and satisfying.

SOME OF THE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT SKAGIT REGIONAL HEALTH INCLUDE: INFORMATION DESK VOLUNTEERS Volunteer Services operates information desks at both Skagit Valley Hospital and Cascade Valley Hospital.

MAIL DELIVERY Volunteers at Skagit Valley Hospital make a daily circuit to pick up and deliver mail.

GIFT SHOP The Skagit Valley Hospital Gift Shop has many wonderful retail gift items for sale. The gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

All proceeds from the Gift Shop are returned back to help Skagit Regional Health in areas of need. Volunteers assist with sales and merchandising.

PIANISTS Music can help to create a healing environment. Accomplished pianists are invited to join the group of volunteers who share their talent playing the grand piano in the Skagit Valley Hospital lobby.

JUNIOR MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS The Junior Medical Volunteer program is for students age 1618. The program allows young people an excellent opportunity to explore the culture of a healthcare organization while giving service to their community. Junior Medical Volunteers work in many areas of Skagit Regional Health. Each year, Skagit Regional Health awards scholarships to outstanding Junior Medical Volunteers.

FOR STUDENTS AND JOB SEEKERS While volunteering can be a great way to explore job opportunities, network or get required school credits, we ask volunteers to complete a minimum of 100 hours before requesting recommendations or receiving credit for hours volunteered.

As the number of positions is limited, prospective volunteers should apply at least a year in advance of any school deadlines that may be applicable.

High school students seeking course or club credit should apply and begin volunteering before their senior year.

Tour highlights

opportunities, patient focus On a sunny day in April, six members of the Public Hospital District Board of Commissioners hopped on one of Skagit Regional Health’s shuttle buses to take a tour of the system’s healthcare facilities in Snohomish and Island counties.

The tour took us all day as we made stops in Darrington, Granite Falls, Arlington, Smokey Point, Stanwood and Camano Island. In all, our healthcare system has grown to include two hospitals, Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington and Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, and 19 outpatient clinics.

The purpose of this tour was for the Board to see each facility, to chat with staff and providers and to get a sense of the healthcare needs of the communities we serve. For some of us, it was our first visit to these facilities which made for an illuminating day. The experience was a great one as we asked a lot of questions and learned a great deal about our people, facilities and beautiful geography. As a result, we see many opportunities in our future to serve the people of this region.

To a person, the doctors, frontline staff and others we spoke to expressed a dedication to providing excellence in healthcare services, a passion for the work they do and a firm focus on the patient.

This patient-centered approach is central to all we are doing as we move forward at Skagit Regional Health. Our tour gave us the chance to see and feel what is going on in our facilities and to talk about ideas to grow and expand our ability to serve our patients. We are working hard to recruit additional providers including primary care and specialists. We are nearly one year into our launch of our new, powerful Electronic Health Record and are beginning to see the benefits of having one unified computer

system for our patients. We have started some exciting projects including construction of the new Skagit Imaging Pavilion with Skagit Radiology, the new da Vinci® Xi robotic surgical system and the new cardiac cath lab that bring new technology to the region.

As a Board, we can say with confidence that from Arlington to Anacortes and Smokey Point to Stanwood, we have a solid foundation and commitment to grow and invest in excellence in healthcare services in the communities we serve. Our patient focus means our priorities are around quality care, access to the services people need and creating positive patient experiences.
