Surgeons General

Group of five physicians brings expertise to the OR

You may find them meeting with patients in the office, consulting with physicians in the Emergency Department, or following up with family or staff – but most often, you will find the general surgeon in the operating room.

Skagit Regional Clinics’ team of five general surgeons perform a wide range of surgical procedures at Skagit Valley Hospital, responding to the daily needs of patients across the region and answering the call in the event of trauma.

“As a general surgeon, I have a more complete opportunity to practice medicine,” said Mark Johnson, MD, who returned to his hometown of Mount Vernon to practice in 1979. “We see patients, evaluate symptoms, help make a determination on what’s causing the symptoms and seek out what is the best treatment to manage the disease.”

Major advancements in surgery The five physicians agree that surgical techniques, treatment and medication options and diagnostic tools have improved over the years, changing how they do their work.

“Many of the common procedures we learned in medical school are now done in a completely different way,” said Dr. Mark Johnson. “We’ve shifted to minimally invasive, arthroscopic and laparoscopic methods.”

Minimally invasive techniques mean smaller incisions, less pain and faster patient recovery. Clear images from ultrasound, CT and MRI more fully isolate the problem and help determine the course of action, which may or may not involve surgery.

“There are a lot of ways to check it out, using diagnostics, without doing an operation today,” Dr. Ochiai said.

CT and MRI were not as commonly available and PET scans didn’t exist when Dr. Bruce Skinner started in practice, while images from ultrasound and other technologies have improved dramatically in diagnosing the problem and planning treatment.

Close relationships with other specialists are also key, such as the multi-disciplinary approach to cancer care involving radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists.

The breadth of the opportunity to practice general surgery in a smaller community is what brought Tom Ochiai, MD to Mount Vernon in 2006. “This is rare and one of the big reasons I came here,” Dr. Ochiai said.

“It’s a dynamic field, it’s not boring,” Dr. Morrie Johnson said of general surgery, noting it takes reading journals, attending meetings and educational events and getting involved with fellow physicians to remain current.

The five physicians at Skagit Regional Clinics also depend on one another, assisting each other with cases and comparing notes.

“That’s critical. Sometimes you just need to be reassured that you are doing it right,” said Dr. Skinner. “It’s very helpful to have partners to share experiences with and to pick their brain for advice.”

New health care resources and expansion of programs in the region and at Skagit Valley Hospital have added in improving quality,

Dr. Morrie Johnson said, noting the availability of comprehensive cancer care, heart and vascular programs, pulmonology, kidney dialysis and the hospitalist program.

“All of these things have been a big boost to the quality of care here,” he said. “We have a consistency of excellent medical care and many doctors here who have devoted their careers to this community.”

Dr. Erie enjoys learning and being part of change.

“We have made big strides in general surgery over the last few decades,” he said. “I am proud to have been a part of that.”

On call Part of the job for the five surgeons is to take turns on call, responding to the urgent and emergent needs of patients in the hospital and arriving at the Emergency Department. It is a challenging part of the job, far less exciting than what is often portrayed in television programs, the doctors say.

“It is very stressful,” Dr. Mark Johnson said.

About General Surgery The specialty: According to the American Board of Surgery, General Surgery is a discipline that requires knowledge of and familiarity with a broad spectrum of diseases that may require surgical treatment. Below is a list of the most common general surgery procedures:

Surgical specialties benefit patients In addition to general surgery, many specialists provide services in the six spacious operating rooms at Skagit Valley Hospital, including: Gynecology: Gynecologic medicine focuses on the female reproductive system. Gynecologists most often treat conditions involving the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder or cervix. They perform procedures for cancer, infertility, incontinence and other conditions.

Orthopedics: Orthopedic medicine focuses on the body’s musculoskeletal system. This may include preventative therapy or treatment of injuries or diseases involving bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Plastic and reconstructive surgery refers to a variety of highly specialized operations performed to repair or restore function or to improve appearance.

Spine: Spine surgeons specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of back and neck pain. Medical and surgical techniques are utilized to treat areas of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

Urology: Urology focuses on the urinary tracts of both sexes and on the reproductive system of males. Urologists diagnose and treat disorders of the kidneys, prostate, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs.

General surgeons Michael Erie, MD, is a general, vascular and thoracic surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics. He graduated from New York Medical College and served a surgery residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine. He arrived here in 1989.

Mark Johnson, MD, is a general, thoracic and vascular surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics. He is the Surgical Medical Director for the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Washington Medical School. He served a general surgery residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center where he also was Chief Resident in general surgery. A native of Mount Vernon, he joined the medical staff here in 1979.

Morris Johnson, MD, is a general, thoracic and vascular surgeon with advanced training in laparoscopic surgery at Skagit Regional Clinics. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

He served an internal medicine residency at University of Utah and a general surgery residency at Virginia Mason Hospital, where he was Chief Resident. A native of Mount Vernon, and brother to Mark, he joined the medical staff here in 1987.

Tom Ochiai, MD, is a general surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics. He has advanced expertise in laparoscopic, thoracic and vascular techniques. Dr. Ochiai is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He served his residency at New York Methodist Hospital.

The most recent addition to the group, Dr. Ochiai came here in 2006.

Bruce Skinner, MD, is a general vascular and thoracic surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics. He is a graduate of University of Louisville School of Medicine and served a general surgery residency at Virginia Mason Hospital, where he was Chief Resident. He was the second surgeon on staff when he arrived in 1982.

Memorial Day weekend two years ago, Dr. Ochiai spent 36 hours straight in the OR. “It does happen that way sometimes, but that’s the job,” he said.

The general surgeons are most frequently called to the Emergency Department. When Dr. Skinner started, he was one of two -meaning he was on call 50 percent of the time.

“We’re it. We are the guys who are called the most, in part, because we do the widest variety of things and can help with all sorts of problems that occur,” Dr. Skinner said.

patients get well.

“I feel lucky to do a job like this, it’s fun and it is really useful,” said Dr. Ochiai, who first went into Family Practice and discovered surgery while working in mission hospitals in third world countries. “It’s nice when a patient says ‘you changed my life.’”

“Each patient is unique and important,” Dr. Mark Johnson said. “There is a lot of variety to my days. I like all of general surgery. It’s fun.”

Dr. Morrie Johnson has found great pleasure in serving the people of his home community. “It is really an honor when a former teacher or friend seeks me out,” he said.

Dr. Skinner, drawn to the medical field because he like anatomy, especially enjoys being in the operating room and the reward of positive outcomes.

Dr. Erie said for all of the surgeons in the group it comes back to the patients.

“You need to have a passion in what you do. We are fortunate as a group because we have a nice broad-based practice and we all have a love for this,” Dr. Erie said. “If you love taking care of patients and the idea of fixing a problem, combined with the art and science of general surgery, then this is for you.”

Morrie Johnson, MD elected to lead state group Morrie Johnson, MD, general surgeon with Skagit Regional Clinics in Mount Vernon, was recently elected president of the Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

For the past several years, Dr. Johnson has served as Associate Medical Director of the statewide Surgical Care and Outcomes Assessment Program (SCOAP), an offshoot of ACS that oversees efforts in Washington to improve quality care in surgery. Dr. Johnson has also served on the organization’s membership committee for the past 15 years.

“I believe it is important to continue to be engaged in surgical issues and quality efforts at the state level and this is another

way I have stayed involved in my field,” Dr. Johnson said. “To have someone from a more rural hospital elected president is unusual and it’s a real honor.”

The Washington Chapter was established in 1951 and members represent a wide variety of specialties including general, vascular, thoracic, plastic and reconstructive surgery along with urologists, ENT and other specialists.

Dr. Johnson’s goals for his tenure as president are to increase involvement in ACS by surgeons across the state and encourage cooperation among physician groups and hospitals to enhance the quality and safety of health care in Washington.

W orkshop

Chronic disease program Having a chronic condition or disease can bring about many life changes. But a new workshop at Skagit Valley Hospital can help you take charge of those changes, and your life.

• Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance

The “Living Well Workshop” is a six-week self-management program, developed at Stanford University, designed to help people gain self-confidence in their ability to manage any type of ongoing health problem. The program focuses on building skills, sharing experiences and support.

• Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals

“The wonderful aspect of this class is that it works broadly for people who have chronic diseases,” said Liz McNett Crowl, a master trainer with the program. “It provides participants with an opportunity to reflect on the impact of having a chronic disease on their life; it introduces them to information about chronic disease that they may not have been aware of.”

The program is meant for individuals with any array of chronic health issues including heart disease, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, obesity, fibromyalgia and others. It also can include caregivers of people with chronic diseases.

The program covers several issues and struggles that go along with living with a chronic disease, including:

• Ways to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation

• Appropriate use of medications

• How to evaluate new treatments.

The program is highly interactive and participative, “where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives,” according to the Stanford Patient Research Center at Stanford Medical Center, which developed the program.

The local program has been under way for nearly a year. Each session has generally eight to 15 participants. The program has a group of Master Trainers who complete an intensive training where they learn how to conduct the program. Usually at least one of the leaders conducting the program has a chronic disease they live with themselves. Master Trainers also recruit lay leaders, which allows the program to be offered in more locations throughout Skagit County.

The program was designed by the Division of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine at Stanford University. After evaluating the program, the university found that people

who took the program, when compared to those who did not, demonstrated significant improvements in exercise, symptom management, and fewer social limitations. They also spent fewer days in the hospital, and there was a trend toward fewer outpatient visits and hospitalizations.

Crowl says the program gives participants the tools and resources that empower them to take charge of their disease. They receive a workbook that gives them a framework to do weekly action plans and a relaxation CD. But Crowl says she also knows firsthand how beneficial the program can be. She and other family members live with various chronic diseases or issues that have forced her family to make some lifestyle changes.

“And this program is a wonderful framework for working slowly to make changes that make our lives better and manage our diseases,” she said.

Pediatrician joins Cascade Skagit Health Alliance in “I came to practice medicine in a roundabout way,” admits pediatrician Dr. Krista Galitsis who joined Cascade Skagit Health Alliance in Smokey Point in April, the new partnership of Skagit Valley Hospital and Cascade Valley Hospital.

Dr. Galitsis attended the University of South Alabama where she received her Ph.D. in cellular biology.

She became involved in diabetes research, but

ultimately found she was interested in a field with more human interaction.

“I found that my interest was with people, not just bench-top research,” said Dr. Galitsis. She returned to the University of South Alabama and completed her medical degree in three years.

During residency training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Dr. Galitsis fell in love with pediatrics.

“I found joy in dealing with kids,” she said. “You have to go where

your heart is.”

Pediatricians care for newborn patients through age eighteen. They are trained to provide routine, preventative and acute care to children.

“Pediatrics is unique in that the kids grow up with you. You get to know each other and they bond with you, which is amazing,” Galitsis said. “Kids learn to trust me as their doctor. It is important to develop that bond and it’s really an honor.”

As a seasoned pediatrician, Dr. Galitsis has found that a good ear is essential to be successful in her specialty. “You have to really listen because no one knows a

Construction begins at new Smokey Point multi-specialty facility Construction is well under way at the new Cascade Skagit Health Alliance facility in Smokey Point. The 42,000-square foot multi-specialty health care facility is a partnership between Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon and Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics in Arlington.

The new project, set for completion in early 2012, will bring the two hospitals together in a joint venture to operate a multi-specialty clinic with the goal of improving access to care for residents of north Snohomish County. Physicians

will include primary care providers such as pediatricians, internal medicine, family practice, women’s health and occupational medicine, along with specialists such as cardiologists, and gastroenterologists.

In addition to physician clinics, the new facility will include the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center at Arlington, moving the facility to Smokey Point from the current site within Cascade Valley Hospital.

The facility will host diagnostic imaging services, such as MRI, X-Ray, CT and ultrasound, along with laboratory services, a pharmacy and urgent care with extended hours for patient convenience.

Physicians are already providing services in the Smokey Point area including Cardiologist Yelena Rosenberg, MD, with an office at 16410 Smokey Point Blvd., Suite 200 and can be reached by calling 360-336-9757.

In addition, Dr. Galitsis has learned the importance of partnering with a child’s parents. “I take the time to work as a team with the parents in order to provide the best care to their children. I can provide medical care, but kids need full support, both physical and mental, to be healthy and strong.”

Dr. Galitsis develops personalized care plans for her patients after listening to the needs of both the child and parents. “I work with parents to find what is best for their child. I am open to discussion and enjoy helping parents make a healthy life plan for their children,” she said.

After practicing for more than 15 years, Dr. Galitsis knows she made the right decision to pursue a career in medicine.

“I love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else,” she said.

Dr. Galitsis and her husband moved to the Northwest from North Carolina. “We always found this area to be so beautiful and knew we wanted to live here one day,” Dr. Galitsis said.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, gardening, knitting, creating fiber art projects and spending time with her husband, cat, Sibby, and African Grey parrot, Porche.

Physician brings special interest in sports medicine Prior to becoming a physician, Ryan Koonce, MD worked as construction engineer in the Seattle and Portland areas. After two years in the field, he determined that his job was not satisfying professionally.

His interest in science and his desire to help others led him to return to school to pursue a medical degree.

Dr. Koonce’s experience working with traditional and non-traditional athletes.

“I learned from this fellowship that ‘athletes’ come in all ages, shapes and sizes. My patient population includes recreational ballroom dancers with knee pain, hikers with ankle pain and home improvers with shoulder pain,” Dr. Koonce said. “The common factors among my patient population are that they are active and they want to feel better. My goal is to help facilitate getting back to whatever activities my patients most enjoy.”

While attending the University of Colorado, Dr. Koonce found similarities between the skeletal system in the human body and his work in construction engineering. He found orthopedic surgeries piqued his interest in medical school. As a long-time athlete, Dr. Koonce found enjoyment working with other athletes. This made orthopedics a great fit professionally.

Dr. Koonce cares for a full range of orthopedic needs at Skagit Regional Clinics. He has a special interest in shoulder and knee surgeries, which were the focus of significant training in his sports medicine fellowship. These include everything from minimally invasive procedures to total joint replacement.

“I was drawn to the variety that orthopedics offers. Even though we focus on the musculoskeletal system, I am able to perform a wide variety of surgeries.

An operation on the foot or ankle is very different than operating on a person’s shoulder. It keeps my practice very interesting,” said Dr. Koonce.

He has found that there are two qualities that make a good orthopedic surgeon. “You need to be able to talk to your patients in the clinic to determine their problem and to really relate to them.

Secondly, you need to have good technical skills in the operating room,” said Dr. Koonce.

Prior to joining Skagit Regional Clinics in August, Dr. Koonce completed specialized training at the San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship program in California. During his year-long fellowship, he was able to work with a variety of athletes, including serving as a team physician for the San Diego Padres baseball team and for local college and high school teams.

Dr. Koonce is pleased to return the Pacific Northwest, where he worked after graduating from college. He finds the small-town feeling of the local community appealing and reminiscent of the town in Colorado where he grew up. In addition, moving to the Skagit Valley brings Dr. Koonce and his wife closer to family in Canada.

Randy Revelle to bring personal story of fighting the stigma of mental illness Randy Revelle was 36 years old in 1977 and in the midst of a political campaign to retain his seat on the Seattle City Council when he experienced a mental health crisis.

Daily episodes and psychotic hallucinations, some causing him to act in threatening ways to his family and himself, went on for three weeks before he was admitted to a hospital and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Revelle’s illness stabilized in two days with the medication lithium, which he continues to take today.

Revelle won the election in 1977, went on to serve as King County Executive, has spent the past 16 years as an executive with the Washington State Hospital Association and, in what has become his most important role, is a nationally recognized advocate to remove the stigma surrounding people living with mental illness and bring parity to insurance coverage for mental health care.

“For 33 years, I have been living with a mental illness,” Revelle said. “It took two months to diagnose and treat my illness, but it took more than four years to overcome the stigma.”

Revelle, who is among about 5.7 million adults in the United States with bipolar disorder, will bring his compelling personal story and message of advocacy to Mount Vernon on September 19 at McIntyre Hall. An engaging speaker, Revelle is direct, honest, and passionate about sharing his story as a way to help others and promote awareness about mental illness.

“I have two fundamental lessons based on my own experience with mental illness for the past 33 years and my father’s advice: Never be ashamed of mental illness and don’t hide it, always tell the truth,” he said.

Those strategies have proven helpful in Revelle overcoming the stigma of mental illness, all the while working in a highly public work environment as an elected official and public policy advocate. Too often, people see those living with mental illness as having personal weaknesses or flaws, a pattern that is not exhibited with other chronic illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease, he said.

“No one should be ashamed of having a mental illness,” Revelle emphasized. “We need to be open about it, discuss it, and support those living with mental illness.”

Recognizing the symptoms of mental illness is important, along with taking the proactive step of seeking professional help, Revelle said. Support from family, friends, and community is also a key to understanding, recovery, and advocacy.

Joshua Griggs, MD to practice Family Medicine Pursuing a career in the field of Family Medicine was the clear choice for Joshua Griggs, MD, who joined Skagit Regional Clinics’ Mount Vernon location in September.

“I was drawn to Family Medicine because it affords me the opportunity to care for patients of all ages and multiple family members at one time,” said Dr. Griggs.

“I wanted a career where I could help people and use critical thinking skills.”

Family Medicine also provides the opportunity to develop relationships with patients.

“I like the continuity of care in my practice,” he said. “I see patients for multiple visits over the course of many

years. You establish trust and develop a relationship with that patient and, often, the whole family.”

Dr. Griggs comes to the area from Osage Beach, Missouri where he worked in a bustling outpatient practice for the last five years. During his time there, he honed his skills as a family physician.

“A good Family Medicine practitioner needs to know how to listen, have good medical knowledge, be approachable and work collaboratively with patients,” said Dr. Griggs. He strives to treat each of his patients in the same way he would like to be treated, which means taking the time to listen to each individual and to care for the whole person, not just addressing their symptoms.

Much of Dr. Griggs’ practice is focused on preventative medicine. “If you can stop a disease before it happens, the patient is healthier overall and we can keep costs down, which patients appreciate,” he said.

Dr. Griggs graduated from Loma Linda Medical School in Loma Linda, Calif. He completed his Family Medicine residency training at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Ana, Calif. and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Griggs and his wife are pleased to have relocated to the Skagit Valley, which brought them closer to family on Whidbey Island and in the greater Seattle area.

Dr. Griggs is looking forward to spending time outdoors, enjoying the Pacific Northwest. In particular, he is interested in hiking, biking, kayaking and spending time with his horses. He also enjoys photography, writing music and playing guitar.

for Mental Health Center project

Skagit Valley Hospital’s plan to expand and remodel the hospital’s Mental Health Center is a major step closer with the announcement of $750,000 in state capital funding for the project.

As a part of the Biennial Capital Budget for 2011 – 2013 approved by state lawmakers, Skagit Valley Hospital was awarded $750,000 to remodel and relocate the Mental Health Center at its Mount Vernon campus.

“We are grateful to Gov. Christine Gregoire and the outstanding support of our state legislative delegation for this effort to gain funding for this essential community project,” said Gregg Davidson, Chief Executive Officer of Skagit Valley Hospital. “Our lawmakers from the 10th, 39th and 40th Districts fully recognize the need for advancing mental health services in the region and the key role the unit at Skagit Valley Hospital plays in providing appropriate, inpatient services to the mentally ill.”

The state funds complement money dedicated to the project by the federal government.

As a part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010, Skagit Valley Hospital was awarded $800,000 for the project, a request supported by U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.

The project will replace and expand the current 15-bed Mental Health Center at Skagit Valley Hospital, which is the only inpatient facility in Skagit County. The remodeled center will accommodate private rooms, two seclusion rooms and increased security in a healing environment. The remodel will also allow the unit to operate at its 15-bed capacity, improving access to mental health care in the community.

The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation is partnering with the hospital to assist in closing the $1 million funding gap to complete the expansion. The Foundation is continuing fund-raising efforts to benefit the project.

“The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees understands the need for mental health services for the people of our community and are proud to be a part of the fund-raising effort for this essential project,” said Corey Mendoza, Foundation Board President.

SPORTS Injury Prevention The leaves are turning vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow. The morning air feels crisp and cool. Kids are back in school and fall sports are under way. This is the time of year when physicians see an influx of student-athletes for sports physicals and sports-related injuries.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 30 million American adolescents participate in organized sports. High school athletes account for approximately two million injuries, 500,000 visits to the doctor and 30,000 hospitalizations each year. More than 3.5 million kids under the age of 14 receive medical treatment for sports injuries annually.

bones or joints. Common examples of overuse injuries include tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints and stress fractures.

Area residents benefit from the expertise of local physicians who have received advanced training for treating sports-related injuries. Kenneth Oates, MD of Northwest Orthopaedic and Daniel Hanesworth, MD of Skagit Island Orthopedic Surgeons, have received sub-specialty training in sports medicine and Patrick Lyons, MD of Northwest Orthopaedic and Ryan Koonce, MD of Skagit Regional Clinics have completed sports medicine fellowship programs.

These physicians have undergone rigorous training that includes taking care of athletes to gain more experience in surgical techniques and treatment for a variety of sports injuries.

According to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, injuries can occur for a variety of reasons including improper training or technique, equipment failure or biomechanical issues of the athlete.

Dr. Ryan Koonce, orthopaedic surgeon at Skagit Regional Clinics who has experience working with an array of professional, college and high school sports teams, notes that athletes at any level can sustain acute or overuse injuries.

Acute injuries occur from a single event.

Examples of acute injuries include bone fractures, sprains, dislocations or ligament tears. Overuse injuries occur from repetitive activities and can affect tendons,

Curtis Rodin, MD, who has practiced at Skagit Island Orthopedic Surgeons for 13 years, says that he most often sees acute injuries in his practice. Overuse injuries are more commonly treated by a family physician or physical therapist.

The CDC notes that more than half of all childhood and adolescent sports injuries are preventable. The American Othopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) recommends the following tips to help prevent sports injuries: Athletes should receive a preparticipation physical to screen for and treat any underlying conditions.

Sports physicals can be obtained in most primary care offices or in urgent care clinics. Athletes of all ages should consider a pre-participation check-up with their doctor. “For older people who want to start a strenuous exercise program, or who want to resume exercise after a prolonged period of inactivity, it is probably appropriate that they see their primary care giver to be sure that they don’t have any cardiac issues that would be made worse by strenuous exercise,” said Dr. Kenneth

Dr. Rodin, who has been an avid athlete all his life, echoes the same sentiment, “Lots of people enjoy sports, but not everyone is in great physical shape. My number one tip for both young and old athletes is to make sure they are well-conditioned for the activity they would like to participate in.”

Athletes should always warm up before practice or competition. This brings the heart rate up from the resting level and helps stretch muscles before more intense activity begins.

Athletes should cool down at the end of practice or competition to allow their heart rate to gradually return to resting level. Stretching again may be helpful in avoiding injuries.

Work with a coach or athletic trainer to ensure proper technique is being used. Dr. Rodin recommends meeting with a personal trainer who can provide strength training, particularly core training, and prevention techniques. “We would much rather prevent injuries than treat them after they occur,” he said.

Increase training gradually. Dr. Oates suggests that athletes get in shape well before competition season begins. AOSSM recommends following the 10 percent rule: Do not increase training activity, weight, mileage or pace by more than 10 percent per week in order to provide the body with time to recover.

Wear proper fitting equipment, including helmets, sports-appropriate pads and shoes. Dr. Koonce agrees, “It is important to abide by the rules of the game and this includes the use of proper equipment.”

Back to School: Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy

The new school year is an exciting time for children. Parents can help start the year off on the right foot by taking simple steps to support their children’s health.

Athletes should drink water every 30 minutes while participating in any physical activity. Adequate hydration allows muscles to work properly and to avoid cramps or spasms.

Take a break. Dr. Koonce recommends resting between practices and games.

“Injuries can occur when the body is fatigued from overplay,” he said. The AOSSM notes that athletes who play sports year-round are more likely to experience overuse injuries because their bodies don’t have time between seasons to recover. For those athletes who choose to participate in sports all year, playing different sports can help avoid using the same muscle groups continuously which can lead to overuse injuries.

If an injury does occur, seek assistance from a certified athletic trainer or physician, depending on the severity of the injury. Dr. Oates cautions his patients, “Don’t try to push on and play hurt.” The sooner an injury is diagnosed, the more effectively it can be treated.

“Young kids can have anxiety about starting a new program or at a new school.

Parents can help diffuse some of their anxiety by visiting the school before the first day of class,” suggests local pediatrician Dr. Richard Levine of Skagit Pediatrics in Mount Vernon.

Additional preparation should include updating all school medication forms ahead of the school year. This is especially important for kids with chronic health issues. “I also encourage parents of children with chronic issues to talk with the school nurse prior to the school year beginning,” said Dr. Mark Barr, a pediatrician with Skagit Pediatrics.

Parents should also pay attention to immunization recommendations.

“Children who are considered ‘on schedule’ for immunizations have most complete by age five, or the time they start kindergarten,” said Dr. Gil Traylor, family practice physician at North Cascade Family Physicians. “They won’t need any more until age eleven when they receive immunizations for meningitis, tetanus, pertussis and girls may consider the HPV (cervical cancer) series of shots.

There are more and more shots now, but for good reason: Immunizations prevent disease.”

Dr. Barr recommends annual checkups for healthy patients age five through their teen years. More frequent visits may be necessary if a child has ongoing health concerns. “This schedule gives us a chance to review growth, both physically and mentally,” he said.

Dr. Traylor notes the importance of establishing a relationship with your child’s care provider. “It is important to have a primary care provider follow your

child for preventative health visits, not just acute care. This gives the parents, kids and physician the chance to talk about health and growth issues as they come up.” In addition, regular visits provide an opportunity to receive an annual flu shot.

Kids are considered to be a high-risk group for contracting the flu and physicians recommend that children six months of age and older receive an annual flu shot.

“We encourage patients to contact us in October to determine when the flu vaccine will be available. We offer flu clinics during the week and on Saturdays during flu season,” said Dr. Barr.

Beyond well-child check-ups, immunizations and flu shots, there are a variety of ways to keep kids healthy between visits to the doctor’s office.

“It’s good for kids to maintain a regular routine that includes school, sleep and meals. Trying to maintain a daily schedule helps ensure that kids are getting healthy meals and a good degree of sleep. Maintaining a schedule on the weekend helps make sure kids aren’t exhausted for school the following week,” recommends Dr. Barr.

Dr. Levine notes that breakfast is a meal that is often forgotten. He said, “Breakfast doesn’t need to be a big deal, just something to eat in the morning to help kids perform at their best.”

Pediatrician Dr. Esen Zentner, with Skagit Pediatrics, encourages her patients to get plenty of exercise. “This doesn’t necessarily mean participating in organized sports, but just staying active. Limiting screen time on cell phones, computers, TVs and hand held games to less than an hour per day is a good way for parents to encourage physical activity.”

Cosmetic surgery, other treatments available close to home Residents of the greater Skagit Valley no longer need to journey out of the area to find cutting-edge cosmetic surgeries or treatments. Today, there are several cosmetic practices conveniently located in our community that collectively offer a wide range of procedures to patients. Whether it is a facelift, a breast augmentation or body lipo contouring, traveling south to Seattle, California or farther away is no longer necessary.

One local practice is the Cascade Cosmetic Center in Mount Vernon. showed that 75 percent of all procedures performed by academy surgeons in 2010 were non-surgical. The most common non-surgical procedures done were Botox® treatments for wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet areas.

Filler treatments, with products such as Restylane® and Radiesse®, are also on the rise in addressing facial lines and the volume loss associated with aging. Filler and Botox treatments generally take 20 to 60 minutes and can be used for various facial areas.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month This fall pink ribbons are visible nearly everywhere you go - from shopping bags at the grocery store to the uniforms of NFL players.

The pink ribbon is a well-known symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed every October.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women (excluding all types of skin cancer) and accounts for nearly 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in U.S. women.

The seriousness of the disease is influenced by the stage it is in when diagnosed. Because there is no way to prevent breast cancer, and the disease has virtually no symptoms when the tumor is small and easiest to treat, health care providers encourage women to have regular mammograms.

During the month of October, local women have added opportunities to schedule their annual mammogram. The Breast Care Center in Mount Vernon offers extended hours, including Saturday appointments, throughout the month and offers incentives for women to have their mammogram. “We try to make appointments during Breast Cancer Awareness month fun for women. We offer complimentary massage, finger foods and goodie bags,” said Julia Davenport, marketing director for the Breast Care Center.

Appointments for screening mammograms, which are appropriate for women over 40 years of age and who are not experiencing any symptoms (pain, lumps, discharge etc.), take only 15 minutes to complete.

“Our goal is to make women as comfortable as possible during their appointment,” said Davenport. The Breast Care Center’s experienced technologists carefully explain each stage of the exam to the patient, review patient and family history and the results of any previous mammograms. Pediatricians are now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Skagit Valley Hospital as part of a new pediatric hospitalist program partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Known as pediatric hospitalists, these Seattle Children’s physicians will work in Skagit Valley Hospital, caring for young patients throughout the hospital, from newborns in the Family Birth Center to older children who come to the Emergency Department.

The partnership with Seattle Children’s to provide pediatric hospitalist coverage 24 hours every day of the year started in July and expands on a part-time program started by Skagit Pediatrics and Skagit Regional Clinics to share physician coverage.

“For many years, Seattle Children’s has provided our clinical staff with education, sharing policies and procedures and training in high risk neonatal stabilization.

It seemed only natural to look to Seattle Children’s to oversee our pediatric hospitalist program,” said Jan Iverson, Chief Nurse Executive at Skagit Valley Hospital.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Skagit Regional Health and Seattle Children’s to work more closely together, ensuring access to a higher level of care when needed. It is the right thing for our children in Skagit County and surrounding areas.”

Seattle Children’s now employs several local pediatricians to work at Skagit Valley Hospital including Barbara Geraghty, MD, Jenny Taylor, MD, Lyall Bishop, MD, Erin Charles, MD, Mark Barr, MD, Rick Levine,

MD, Rowena Pusateri, MD, Brad Berg, MD and Donna Schoonover, MD. “We are pleased to be expanding our partnership with Skagit Valley Hospital with a team of Seattle Children’s physicians who are very familiar to the Skagit Valley community,” said Carlos Villavicencio, MD, Medical Director of the Regional Hospitalist Program for Seattle Children’s. “Now, there will always be a pediatrician present at the hospital, 24/7.”

Pediatric hospitalists care for hospitalized patients and work with the child’s regular pediatrician and other physicians involved in the child’s care to provide updates during the hospital stay and an overview when the child is discharged from the hospital.

“We look to engage all community physicians and partner with them to take care of their patients,” Dr. Villavicencio said. “This allows us to extend Seattle Children’s expertise into the community to help deliver a high level of care, close to home.”

Skagit Valley Hospital is the third regional hospital to join the Seattle Children’s Hospitalist program. Additional participants include Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland and Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett.

In addition to a model of having a pediatrician present around the clock, another component for the new partnership with Seattle Children’s will be to raise the level of nursery care over the next several months, allowing Skagit Valley Hospital to expand its neonatal care levels.

Six students earn Skagit Valley Hospital Guild scholarships The Skagit Valley Hospital Guild announces the award of $500 scholarships to six deserving students who participated in the Junior Medical Volunteer program at Skagit Valley Hospital and Skagit Regional Clinics.

Mount Vernon High School students Jasper Dinh, Mataja Davidson, Jessica Conejo-Castro and Whitney Dickey, Mount Vernon Christian School student Emily Boudreau, and Sedro-Woolley High School student Jessica Wright were honored by Guild members at the hospital on May 11 for their academic success and service as volunteers.

Jasper Dinh has a 3.7 grade point average (GPA) and plans to study medicine or engineering at the University of Washington. Away from school, he participated in martial arts, basketball, soccer, tennis and swimming. He volunteered in Day Surgery and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at the hospital, totaling 200 hours of service.

Mataja Davidson has a 3.7 GPA and plans to pursue a teaching or business degree at Pacific Lutheran University. She is co-president of DECA, a member of the National Honor Society and French Club and has participated in several theater productions. She provided 400 hours of service working at the hospital information desk and volunteering on hospital Guild and Auxiliary projects.

Emily Boudreau has a 3.7 GPA and plans to study nursing or business at Seattle University. She has been involved in volleyball, track, cross country, choir and theater productions in high school. She has volunteered 180 hours at the hospital main information and surgery information desks.

Jessica Wright has a 3.8 GPA and plans to study pharmacy at the University of Washington. She is involved in National Honor Society, swimming, basketball, Spanish Club, Math Club and Choir Club in high school. She volunteered in Day Surgery at the hospital and at the information desk of Skagit Regional Clinics, totaling more than 440 hours of service.

Jessica Conejo-Castro has a 3.4 GPA and plans to study nursing or nutrition at Skagit Valley College. She is involved in a variety of volunteer roles using her bilingual skills to assist others in migrant programs, reading and math nights and summer camps. She is the first member of her family to graduate from high school and attend college. She has volunteered more than 210 hours at the information desk.

Whitney Dickey has a 3.5 GPA with plans to study biology or education at Seattle Pacific University. During high school, she has been involved in debate, softball, FCCLA, DECA, National Honor Society, Key Club and service as the Mount Vernon School Board student representative. She has volunteered at the information desks totaling more than 150 hours of service.

Jeffrey Miller appointed commissioner Mount Vernon resident Jeffrey Miller, Ph.D, JD was appointed in April, to fill the vacant position on the Skagit Valley Hospital Board of Commissioners.

The vacancy on the seven-member board was created by the resignation in February of Tim Raschko, a member of the board since 1996.

Miller, a resident of Mount Vernon since 2006, has a career spanning more than 30 years in business and legal experience in biotechnology and internet commerce. He has served as an executive officer with three public companies and as chief executive officer for two private companies. He is an attorney with Perkins Coie, a multinational law firm headquartered in Seattle and is a member of the Board of Directors for Koronis Pharmaceuticals in Seattle, a firm specializing in developing therapeutics for HIV and hepatitis C. He earned a Ph.D in biophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

Miller said he was interested in the Skagit Valley Hospital Board position because of his experience in health care and a desire to get more involved in the community. “Access to health care and cost containment are two overarching goals for the health care industry in general. My goals include providing strategic assistance to Skagit Valley Hospital to achieve these goals locally,� Miller said.

Welcoming our new medical students Eleven third-year medical students from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences arrived at Skagit Valley Hospital in July, joining the inaugural class of 12 students who are now one year closer to graduation.

Medical students spend two years at the PNWU campus in Yakima, followed by two years at a graduate medical education site such as Skagit Valley Hospital, where they participate in rotations including family practice, pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine and obstetrics at the hospital and in clinics throughout the area.

Here is a brief introduction of the 11 new arrivals: Scott Blanchet was born in California, but moved frequently with his pilot father and family, landing in Tacoma to attend Bellarmine Prep High School and the University of Puget Sound where he majored in chemistry. He enjoys soccer, skateboarding and surfing. He serves as national liaison for the PNWU chapter of the Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (UAAO).

Kerri Chung was born in Richland and raised in Edmonds. She graduated from the University of Washington and worked for several years as a special education and substitute teacher in California. She enjoys sports and serves as president of the Eastern Medicine Club at PNWU. Daniel Coffin was born and raised in Kirkland where he developed an early interest in medicine and attended Seattle Pacific University. He serves as Student Government Association Class President at PNWU and enjoys photography and a variety of outdoor activities.

Miranda Eiseman was born in Iowa and graduated from Inglemoor High School in Kenmore. She attended the University of Washington, earning degrees in cell and molecular biology and Spanish.

She worked as a medical assistant in family practice and cardiology before attending medical school. She is married and lives in Snohomish. She is president of the OBGYN/Women’s Health Club at PNWU and volunteers with the teen parenting class at Davis High School in Yakima.

Angela Kalil was born in Iowa and graduated with degrees in biology and studio art from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn. She worked for four years in the lab at the Department of Neurology at the University of Washington. She is married, enjoys art and serves as secretary of the PNWU chapter of the UAAO. Mark Litton graduated from Skagit Valley College and Western Washington University, where he received a degree in biology and anthropology. For 12 years, he traveled to developing countries as a volunteer for a non-profit organization, and developed his interest in medicine along the way in Kenya. He is married and has two children.

Elaine Peterson was born and raised in North Seattle and graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in biochemistry. She worked as a coach, researcher and EMT, traveled to various countries and volunteered 400 hours at Seattle Children’s, before focusing her attention on medicine. She is vice president of the Global Health and Pediatrics clubs at PNWU. Caroline Roeder was raised in Carson, Wash. and graduated from the University of Washington where she majored in physiology. Help available for tired legs, vein problems Tired, aching legs. Thick, ropey varicose veins. Swelling and skin color changes in the lower legs. These symptoms are not just a part of getting older. They may indicate that veins are damaged and you are not efficiently maintaining blood flow in your legs and body.

More than 25 million people in the United States suffer from venous reflux – or backward flow of blood in the legs and seven million will have serious symptoms of swelling, skin changes or ulcers.

For those who work on their feet all day, the fatigue and pain associated with venous reflux can cause trouble walking, standing and even sleeping.

For years, vein problems were accepted as a part of the aging process. Physicians relied on use of compression stockings for temporary relief or a surgical procedure known as vein stripping that was effective, but could cause pain and had an extended healing process.

Today, there is a less invasive, in-office procedure to help patients with these symptoms. It is called radiofrequency ablation and is offered by local surgeons Mark Johnson, MD and Bruce Skinner, MD, who see approximately 30 patients a month for vein-related concerns. They have been involved in this newer treatment of varicose veins since 2003.

An initial appointment begins with the patient describing their symptoms. Dr. Johnson, a general, thoracic and vascular surgeon at Skagit Regional Clinics, has found that patients often express their symptoms or concerns in very different ways.

“I have had patients tell me their legs feel heavy, achy and swollen; others report a burning or itching sensation. One patient, who managed a department store, told me that she limped at the end of her work day,” said Dr. Johnson.

Following a discussion of symptoms is a visual inspection of the legs and an ultrasound. The ultrasound will show if the valves in the patient’s legs are functioning properly. Patients who have venous reflux have faulty valves that allow blood to flow backward.

“If left unchecked, patients with venous reflux can get progressive symptoms

including pain, swelling, cellulitis and ultimately cutaneous ulcers. Some patients may also get superficial phlebitis and rarely some may bleed from their dilated veins,” Dr. Johnson said.

Most insurance companies require patients to wear compression stockings for three months prior to the surgery.

The procedure only takes about 45 minutes and is completed under local anesthesia.

“I am very pleased at how well patients do and how quickly patients respond,” said Dr. Johnson. “This procedure is relatively non-invasive, there is little pain afterward and patients are back to work and routine activity with little downtime.”

Helga Schink, a patient of Dr. Johnson’s, didn’t know she had venous reflux. She had noticed a change in her balance, but attributed it to getting older. Dr. Johnson detected signs of venous reflux at an unrelated appointment.

After months of preparation, including wearing compression stockings for three months, Schink had radiofrequency ablation surgery on one leg in 2010. She was amazed at how easy the procedure was and how good she felt afterwards.

“There were little stings when they gave me the shots to numb my legs, but that was it. There was no other discomfort during the procedure. Following the surgery, I was able to get right back to work. The surgery didn’t restrict any of my activities,” said Schink.

Schink was pleasantly surprised by the results.

“After the surgery, I noticed a world of difference -- especially in the way my balance improved,” she said. “I am so thankful for the surgery. I have more bounce in my step now.”

Today, Schink remains vigilant about taking good care of her legs and veins by continuing to wear compression stockings and has even considered having the procedure on her other leg.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this procedure to a friend or have it done again,” she said.

PillCam Patients benefit from wireless video capsule endoscopy

Local professionals in the medical field aim to be on the front lines of scientific and technological advancements. One example is the use of a tiny wireless video capsule, the PillCam, offered in Skagit Regional Clinics’ gastroenterology department to help detect disorders of the small intestine.

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a noninvasive technique used to identify obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, suspected Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, vascular malformations, small intestinal tumors, NSAID-related injuries and other small bowel disorders which affect 70 million Americans. The small ingestible capsule, which is about the size of a vitamin pill, contains a camera, light source, batteries, radio transmitter and antenna. Once swallowed, it transmits two images every second to the data recorder. The information from the data recorder is then downloaded into a computer allowing the physician to visualize the small intestine.

Skagit Regional Clinics Gastroenterologists Kalyan Wadwa, MD and Donald Wakelin, MD have overseen nearly 150 capsule endoscopy procedures since they began using the technology in 2008.

Dr. Wadwa has enjoyed the positive impact this technology has had on managing his patients with small bowel disorders.

“This procedure allows us to identify small bowel abnormalities in most of the

patients. Once you identify the problem, you often know whether the best treatment is medical or surgical,” said Dr. Wadwa.

Prior to having this tool, patients would undergo a series of tests, including small bowel follow through and push enteroscopy, to evaluate to small bowel. Video capsule endoscopy, or PillCam, is more accurate and very safe, allowing the physician to diagnose conditions of the small bowel more easily, Dr. Wadwa said.

The patient swallows the disposable PillCam with water. Over the course of eight hours, the camera will take approximately 55,000 images of the patient’s small intestines while he or she continues with normal daily activities, including going to work, if desired. The images are transmitted to a small recording device on the belt.

After eight hours, the patient returns to the doctor’s office where the images are downloaded onto a computer and reviewed by the physician in order to make a diagnosis. The PillCam passes naturally within 24 to 48 hours.

“The procedure is very safe and gives us so much valuable information,” said Dr. Wadwa. It is non-invasive and does not require any sedation or any specific preparation. Patients who have experienced a PillCam study at SRC give it high marks, said Dr. Wadwa.

The PillCam SB (small bowel) received FDA approval in 2001 and it is considered the standard of care for the evaluation of small bowel diseases. An esophageal PillCam ESO received FDA clearance in 2004. A new PillCam COLON is used in Europe for the study of colon. Dr. Wadwa said he hopes to offer local patients additional PillCam options in the future.

Wireless video capsule endoscopy: A patient guide Once the indication for a video capsule endoscopy procedure is established, SRC staff goes through the pre-authorization process to have the study approved by the patient’s insurance carrier. Patients then receive a detailed explanation of the procedure and the study is scheduled.

Patients are not required to use a purgative, but they are asked to fast for 10 to 12 hours prior to ingesting the pill in order to obtain the clearest images of the small bowel.

The patient will arrive at the doctor’s office on the morning of the study. A belt with sensors is placed around the patient’s waist. The belt holds a small data-recording device and the test is ready to begin.

Anyone who has met Alfie Hill knows she puts her interests into action. The long-time Skagit County resident has been an involved community member in the success of the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation since its beginning in 1988.

“My interest in what the Foundation was going to do made me want to get involved,” says Hill. In 1992, Foundation board president Susan McAnnally invited Hill to join the board. With a smile, Alfie says, “I was excited and didn’t even mind that the meetings were held at 7 a.m.”

Like so many of the Foundation’s long-time supporters, the Festival of Trees has served as a conduit to inspire involvement in the organization. Alfie, then owner of the former Skagit Station Gallery in downtown Mount Vernon, initially served as a tree décor sponsor.

In 1993 she co-chaired the Festival with then board member Dale Ragan and again the following year co-chaired with dear friend and fellow board member Sharon Hayes. “I have been active or led just about every Festival of Trees sub-committee, from co-captain of the hospital team tree to wreaths,” she said. Alfie marks her participation in the national Festival

of Trees conference in Sun Valley as a highlight of her tenure on the board. She brought back to the Foundation’s Festival the idea of a “Kids’ Corner” – entertaining activities from cookie decorating to games - which today is still a hallmark of Saturday’s community day during Festival weekend.

“Team Banta” was formed to participate in the “Golfers Against Cancer” benefit at the Skagit County Golf and Country Club in 2001. Today, “Team Banta” shows its prominence at the tournament in fun and service. Alfie, her step children Tom Banta and his wife Monique, and Debbie Banta Nootenboom and her husband Larry sit on the Foundation’s Par Tee Golf Classic tournament committee recruiting sponsors, procuring prizes and working, plus playing, on tournament day. Raising awareness and money for such a great cause (cancer care) is the support that means most to Hill.

“Her extraordinary support never ceases to amaze the Foundation,” says Foundation Executive Director Linda Frizzell. Even the hospital’s fine art program has benefited from Alfie’s “gifts.” Her donation of fine art prints has stretched from artwork in patient rooms to serving as fabulous auction items at fundraisers.

Virtually every Foundation event and campaign has been touched by the support of Alfie Hill. With her family and friends, she has created a legacy of leadership, service, fun and generosity that Skagit Valley Hospital – its patients and employees – and the Foundation will forever be grateful.

Polo Event Raises Funds for Wound Healing Center

More than $21,820 was raised at July’s “Under the Big Top” polo fundraiser organized by the Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends and the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation to benefit the Skagit Wound Healing Center.

About 150 guests, sporting bejeweled sunglasses and Polo Club hats, enjoyed big top festivities, including hot air balloon rides and watching exhibition polo matches at the La Conner-Whitney Polo fields. A multi-item raffle and live auction featured artwork by Skagit Valley artists Al Currier and Joel Brock, a week in Hawaii, a Whidbey Island Beach House getaway and a bowling party at Coupeville’s Ebey Bowl.

The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees is thankful to the Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends, Mark Iverson and George and Rhoda Dill for their gifts of time, creativity and resources to make this event a success for the Skagit Wound Healing Center.

The Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends, founded in 2008, raises funds throughout the year to purchase new and improved equipment for the Center.

Proceeds of this year’s event will help finish the remodel of the wound center’s lobby providing an updated, comfortable ambience with more seating for patients and their families.

The Skagit Wound Healing Center treats patients with wounds that are not healing and need special attention and ongoing monitoring. MVHS Service Projects Class raises funds for Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation is grateful to the students of the Mount Vernon High School Bulldog Service Projects Class for their efforts to raise funds for the Regional Cancer Care Center at Skagit Valley Hospital. Senior Haley Williams selected the “Coaches vs.

Cancer” initiative to raise monies for local cancer care as her senior culminating project. Fundraising efforts were supported by high school basketball fans

during January home games and Mount Vernon businesses.

Twenty-seven students from the leadership class presented a check for $2,326.72 to Skagit Regional Health CEO Gregg Davidson, Regional Cancer Care Center Director Barbara Jensen and Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation Director Linda Frizzell during a tour of the facility in early April.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a common condition that affects approximately 8 million adults in the US. About 5 percent of people over the age of 50 are believed to suffer from PAD. PAD is more common is men and most often occurs in older persons (over the age of 50). The same risk factors associated with heart disease are also linked with PAD. Attend this screening to find out your risk of PAD, cardiovascular disease and stroke and learn how to reduce it. The screening includes the following tests and results are immediate:

Vitamin D Level Screening

Why should you have your Vitamin D levels tested? Studies have shown a strong link between an individual’s Vitamin D levels and the risk of developing cancer.

New research shows a direct link between Vitamin D deficiency and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis in people with a genetic predisposition for the disease. Vitamin D also plays an integral role in bone health. Other studies have linked low levels of Vitamin D to diabetes and high blood pressure.

From Stigma to Hope – Mental Health Symposium

Approximately 5.7 million adults in the United States suffer from bipolar disorder; millions more struggle with a wide variety of other mental illnesses.

In this evening symposium, keynote speaker Randy Revelle, Senior Vice President of the Washington State Hospital Association and former King County Executive, will share his personal story of struggles with bipolar disorder and communicate a message of advocacy.

Local mental health experts and organizations will provide information about local resources for mental health. Time will be allowed for questions, as well as discussion about “next steps” to enhance services in Skagit County for individuals and families with mental illness.

This event is provided as part of a statewide campaign to help people better understand what mental illness is and to realize there is hope for recovery and mental “wellness.”

Peripheral artery disease is also likely to be a sign of a more widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries (atherosclerosis). This condition may be reducing blood flow to the heart and brain, as well as the legs. About 8 million Americans in the U.S. have PAD.

Maintain an Active and Fulfilling Life with a Chronic Health Problem

Living Well Workshop is a six-week selfmanagement workshop designed to help people gain self-confidence in their ability to manage any type of ongoing health problem. These health problems may include heart disease, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure, being overweight, fibromyalgia, and others.

Designed at Stanford University, research studies have shown that the workshop is extremely effective in helping people manage their health. People with different ongoing health problems, or caregivers to someone with chronic conditions, attend together in this highly interactive program, focusing on building skills, sharing experiences, and support.

Classes are facilitated by two certified leaders, one or both of whom are nonhealth professionals with a chronic disease themselves.

Certified Diabetes Education Program

Skagit Valley Hospital offers a comprehensive education program for adults with diabetes, either newly diagnosed or for those patients needing extra guidance with diabetes control. The program includes an introductory oneon-one appointment, six hours of group sessions (two three-hour classes) covering the basics of diabetes management, and at least two hours of one-on-one education in nutrition. Individual appointments to review medication issues related to diabetes self- management, including maximizing the use of insulin, are also available.

Program instructors include Amy Navarre Cantrell, PA-C, Certified Diabetic Educator, Exercise Specialist Michelle Frey and Registered Dieticians Christina Sackman and Kara Siedman. Dr. Geoffrey Spielmann with Skagit Regional Clinics – Mount Vernon serves as Medical Director for the program.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Do you suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and want to improve the quality of your life? This intensive program can help patients with chronic lung disorders including emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthma, decrease respiratory symptoms and complications and reduce hospitalizations.

The program teaches participants selfmanagement and relaxation techniques to improve emotional well-being, skills to help regain control of their breathing, and pursue activities to the fullest extent of their abilities.

This two-hour class helps to prepare patients for their upcoming joint replacement surgery. We have incorporated classroom instruction with procedurespecific therapy. The Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABI) is a measure of the reduction in arterial blood pressure of the legs and is used to detect evidence of blockages from plaque buildup (PAD.) Abnormal ABI’s are associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease.

• Elevated levels of body fat may lead to problems such as hypertension, elevated blood lipids (fats and cholesterol), diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease, all related to obesity.

Vitamin D Level Screening

Why should you have your Vitamin D levels tests? Studies have shown a strong link between an individual’s Vitamin D levels and the risk of developing cancer.

New research shows a direct link between Vitamin D deficiency and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis in people with a genetic predisposition for the disease. Vitamin D also plays an integral role in bone health. Other studies have linked low levels of Vitamin D to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Stroke and Aneurysm Screening

No need to wait for a special promotion to come to town or stand in line at a crowded community center. You can schedule your screening exams year around and have the exams performed using state-of-the-art equipment, conducted by board certified diagnostic technologists and reviewed by a board certified radiologist.

Skagit Valley Ultrasound Associates provides vascular health screenings that include evaluation of the carotid arteries to screen for disease or narrowing and of the abdominal aorta to screen for aneurysms.

This ultrasound screening test is noninvasive, quick and painless, and will help you identify whether you are at increased risk for stroke and vascular disease and provide information so your physician may begin preventive treatment if necessary.

A physician referral is not necessary, although we ask that you provide the name of a primary care provider, so results can be forwarded. The cost is only $59 for the combined carotid and aorta screening and is payable by cash or check only. This exam is not billable to insurance. Individuals whose screening results suggest the need for further evaluation will be referred to follow-up care with their physician.

One-day Saturday and two-day weekend intensive childbirth preparation classes are available. The fee is $95. Full payment or a copy of your medical coupon is required two weeks before class begins.

Pre-registration is required. A $5 discount is available on the Breastfeeding and Newborn Care class when registering for it at the same time as the Childbirth Express class, making it only $20.

Breastfeeding and Newborn Care In this two and one-half hour program, one of Skagit Valley Hospital’s Family Birth Center’s nurse Lactation Consultants will aid parents in gaining the knowledge necessary to make feeding decisions regarding their new baby. In addition, a local pediatrician will be available to provide information on newborn care – time for questions will be allowed. Preregistration required. The class fee is $25.

This six-week course for expectant parents includes information about emotional changes during pregnancy, the labor process, breathing techniques, the role of the support person, breastfeeding, and a local pediatrician to discuss your baby’s first three months. The fee is $110.

Medical coupons are accepted. Full payment or a copy of your medical coupon is required two weeks before the class begins. Classes are offered at Skagit Valley Hospital. Pre-registration required.

Here at the Family Birth Center, we are dedicated to you and your baby’s health. That is why we provide one of the most inclusive lactation services programs in the region. There are six Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant Registered Nurses available to visit you during your hospital stay and help you experience a successful start to breastfeeding your baby.

The Lactation Services’ office serves also as an Ameda rental station, where breast pumps and accessories are available to rent or purchase. Cancer Transitions will answer many of your questions about cancer survivorship post-cancer treatment.

CLIMB®: Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery CLIMB is a special support program for children ages 6-12 who have a parent or guardian undergoing cancer treatment.

The CLIMB program was developed by the Children’s Treehouse Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to the emotional support of children who have parents with cancer. Our facilitators have received special training and resources to provide this program.

The CLIMB program offers two-hour group meetings every week for a period of six weeks and dinner is provided for participants. Each child is provided with their own workbook to capture their progress, which they can share with their family at home. Additional resources are provided to the parent or guardian for education and support.

This program is being offered free of charge and is funded by the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation. As an organization, we recognize that cancer affects the entire family, and desire to provide support at multiple levels. Receiving treatment at Skagit Valley Hospital is not a requirement to participate.

Tai Chi/Qigong Class New Schedule Tai Chi and Qigong are traditional Chinese exercises that have been a daily prescription for health and longevity for hundreds of years. This class focuses on balance, posture, relaxation, breathing, and visual and mental concentration. The elements of Tai Chi and Qigong help the immune system, central nervous system, blood supply, and circulation, as well as strengthen bones, joints, and tendons.

The movements are slow in tempo, very low impact on the body, and can be done standing or seated. Please join us on Tuesdays from 2 – 3:15 p.m. Fall session will meet once a week for six weeks and pre-registration is required. Please call 360-814-8287 to sign up. Look Good, Feel Better

Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. This program teaches beauty techniques to women in active treatment or those who are about to start treatment. It helps them combat the appearance-related side effects of treatment.

The Look Good, Feel Better sessions are led by trained, volunteer cosmetologists who teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry. Women also learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves, and other accessories. Pre-registration is required; please call 360-814-8287.

Art and Healing Group

Creating art can promote healing by reducing anxiety and stress and improving emotional well-being.

Grief Support Services Hospice of the Northwest provides support to anyone in our communities coping with grief and loss after the death of a loved one. The Department of Volunteer Services at Skagit Regional Health coordinates the activities of over 500 volunteers in support of the hospital’s/clinics’ operations. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and communities throughout the Skagit Valley area. Many volunteers work in the hospital and clinics, wearing the familiar blue vests and smocks that have become a fixture here. They may work in areas such as endoscopy, rehabilitation, nuclear medicine, oncology, radiology, day surgery, at one of our information desks, as an escort, or helping in one of the many supporting roles. When a patient checks in for surgery at Skagit Valley Hospital, our surgical services volunteers check in the patient’s family. Throughout the day, our volunteers keep families apprised of their loved one’s progress and provide a caring ear (and a cup of coffee).

Mail Delivery Volunteers make a twice-daily circuit to pick up and deliver mail throughout the hospital.

Junior Medical Volunteers The Junior Medical Volunteer program is for 14 to 18-year-olds who want to volunteer in a health care setting. The program allows young people an excellent opportunity to explore the culture of a health care organization while giving service to their community. Junior Medical Volunteers work in Admitting, Radiology, Volunteer Services, Acute Care Nursing Units, Oncology, Community Outreach, Rehab Services and many more areas of Skagit Valley Hospital. Each year, Skagit Valley Hospital awards scholarships to outstanding Junior Medical Volunteers.
