In our quest to best serve the people of the region, we are engaging with other community hospitals to best meet the needs of patients, we have partnered with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to offer the latest in cancer care and we are in the final stages of discussing integration with Skagit Valley Medical Center. This kind of collaboration inspires teamwork.

For example, Skagit Valley Hospital runs the oncology program at Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics in Arlington by invitation from Cascade. We just moved our Regional Cancer Care Center at Arlington into the hospital’s new facilities and offer patients the chance to see their oncologist and receive chemotherapy in the center, supplemented by radiation therapy available at the Regional Cancer Care Center in Mount Vernon. This is a partnership that truly benefits the patients of our communities.

In addition, Skagit Valley and Cascade Valley hospitals are collaborating on a new 40,000-square foot facility in Smokey Point to provide primary and specialty health care services. The new project, set for completion in summer 2011, will bring the two hospitals together in a joint venture to provide a multi-specialty clinic and diagnostic imaging services with the goal of improving access to care for residents of north Snohomish County.

Community Health Clinic, offering access to primary care. The clinic has been so well received, plans are under way to raise funds to build a new, expanded clinic on county-owned property.

Our strong partnership as a network member of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) serves as another illustration of how collaboration brings value to the patients we serve. SCCA is a partnership of three world-renowned organizations: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s. As the only network member north of Seattle, our relationship with SCCA allows our patients easy access to second opinions and participation in the latest clinical trials in the battle against cancer.

Integration with physicians is another important step in creating the team approach. At press time, the details were nearing completion of Skagit Valley Hospital’s acquisition of Skagit Valley Medical Center, a multi-specialty clinic with 105 providers and 373 staff at six locations in Skagit, Island and north Snohomish counties. It is our goal to enhance access to health care services and bring stability by continuing to recruit and retain physicians.

To that end, we also continue to work with independent providers and clinics to support efforts to bring additional health care professionals to the community.

All of these efforts are focused on our commitment to the community and to a team approach to meet the needs of each patient with the confidence of knowing that advanced, quality, compassionate care is available close to home.

Leading breast cancer physician urges women to

takecharge Nationally known medical oncologist and author Dr. Julie Gralow of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance acknowledges that women have a couple of things working against them in avoiding breast cancer: Gender and age.

“We just can’t do much about either of those,” she said of the top two risk factors for breast cancer.

However, the Director of Breast Medical Oncology at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and professor in the oncology division of the University of Washington School of Medicine, urged the 150 attendees of Skagit Valley Hospital’s Women’s Health Luncheon to take control of the things they can influence.

“Take charge of the factors over which you have control,” she told the February gathering at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. “Lifestyle choices. This is an area we can change.”

Dr. Gralow’s presentation coincided with the official launch of The Breast Institute at Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center, a multidisciplinary program for patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer; to offer wellness

surveillance visits for breast cancer survivors; and to focus on education for our community in all aspects of breast health to include prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

Dr. Gralow is an advocate of education, good nutrition, positive attitude and exercise, co-authoring a book on the relationship between breast cancer and exercise as a way to enhance quality of life during and following treatment.

During the presentation, she cited a study that shows 2.5 hours of exercise per week brings an 18 percent decrease in the risk of breast cancer.

“Now, most of us think we get more exercise than we actually do,” she said.

“But I bet everybody here could get 2.5 hours of walking in a week.”

Maintaining a healthy diet and weight along with moderation in alcohol consumption are all lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

“Overweight women are twice as likely to die from breast cancer,” she said, noting obesity in Washington state has risen from less than 10 percent in 1991 to more than 20 percent in 2002.

Vitamin D may also play a positive role and may be protective against some cancers, including breast cancer, she said.

“There is no reason not to have an appropriate Vitamin D level,” she said.

Breast cancer is number one for incidence and number two in deaths among cancers in women while lung cancer is the number two for incidence and the top killer.

Overall, 70 to 80 percent of breast cancer cases are “sporadic” while 15 to 30 percent are in family clusters and 5 to 10 percent involve heredity, she said.

She encourages women to stick with the American Cancer Society’s recommendation that starting at age 40, women should get an annual breast examination and screening mammogram.

program features latest in radiation therapy Skagit Valley Hospital’s comprehensive Regional Cancer Care Center is among a handful of centers in the state to bring the latest in radiation therapy to patients.

Regional Cancer Care Center at Arlington moves into

new space

The Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center at Arlington recently moved to new, spacious quarters at Cascade Valley Hospital.

The Regional Cancer Care Center is located on the second floor of the hospital’s new 40,000-square foot building.

The center in Mount Vernon is only the fourth site in the country to install the new Elekta Axesse linear accelerator, which is the most modern linear accelerator available today for the delivery of targeted radiation therapy in the battle against cancer.

The new system delivers the radiation in a singular rotational movement of the linear accelerator, reducing treatment times to two to three minutes with improved accuracy allowing reduction of the dose to neighboring normal structures.

A built-in CT scanner on the linear accelerator performs a quick check of the patient before each treatment to ensure perfect positioning and targeting of the cancer cells.

“We have the latest technology to ensure that we are on target,” said Medical Director of Radiation Oncology David Kantorowitz, MD, PhD. “We offer precise, on-target treatment in a shorter treatment time with less toxicity and on target.”

Dr. Kantorowitz also uses the equipment to perform stereotactic radiosurgery at the Regional Cancer Care Center, one of the few locations in Washington where the procedures are performed. Stereotactic radiosurgery involves the use of higher radiation doses to vaporize cancer cells and is useful in treating brain tumors, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate cancer and tumors found along the spine.

The Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center is accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Cascade’s new building also features a 16-bed Emergency Department, sevenbed Critical Decision Unit (observation), fully-digital Imaging Department, Cardiopulmonary Services, a roof garden; meeting rooms and Café.

Nearly 1,000 people toured the facility during an open house and dedication on January 24, 2010.

Survivor finds new role to

Becky Voelkel of Concrete says faith, family, friends and great care are carrying her through treatment for multiple myeloma.

Voelkel was diagnosed with the disease in September 2008 and immediately started treatment at the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center in preparation for a bone marrow transplant on Sept. 30, 2009 at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA).

Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center is a network member of the SCCA, a partnership of the world-renowned Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s, providing patients with access to research, clinical trials and the latest in diagnosis and treatment.

According to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, the incurable but treatable disease is a cancer of the plasma cells in the blood. The Foundation estimates nearly 20,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the United States.

For Voelkel, who also has Type 2 diabetes, the illness was spotted before she had any obvious symptoms during routine checks with her primary care physician who noted an elevated protein in her blood in May 2008.

others “I wasn’t feeling sick. I wasn’t feeling any pain,” she said. “What I’ve learned is most people go undiagnosed, so, by the time it’s found, it’s much more serious.”

Voelkel completed all of the preparatory chemotherapy and treatments and headed to Seattle in August 2009 where she would stay for nearly three months during the bone marrow transplant process.

A family friend stayed with her in an apartment near SCCA for the treatment, performed on an outpatient basis.

There were two weeks of diagnostic testing and then a high dose of chemotherapy. Voelkel was also given a drug to promote stem-cell growth and several days later was hooked up to a machine to remove her stem cells for her transplant which followed on Sept. 30.

“The whole process was just amazing. The people are so caring and there was a whole team of people I could talk to,” she said. “I feel blessed living so close to have access to a world-renowned, top research hospital.”

While she had to be especially careful during some periods to avoid exposure to people or germs, other times allowed her

great opportunities in Seattle. She went to a Mariners game, the theater, symphony and to the top of the Space Needle for the first time in her life.

“They try to make your time enjoyable.

There are times when you can’t go out, but when you can, they encourage you to be active,” she said.

In a seamless transition of care, she returned to Mount Vernon on October 30 and started maintenance therapy at the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center in November. She is participating in a clinical trial through SCCA for one year on the use of Vorinostat for multiple myeloma patients post transplant. She is feeling good, and knows the continuing treatment will help.

“I have to remember that I had an aggressive form of cancer and this may help prevent it from coming back,” she said.

Becky received great news in February when doctors told her following a bone marrow biopsy that her disease is in remission.

“People tell me ‘you’re a cancer survivor,’” she said. “I never thought I wasn’t going to be!”

She returned to work part time in January and full time in February at the Tree of Life Christian Outlet in Burlington.

Along the way, the self-described timid Voelkel has found a voice to talk to people about her cancer and her faith in God, which gave her peace, removed her fears and gave her hope.

“I think I have more people to talk to and to reach out to and that’s why I’m still here,” she said.

Skagit County native Michal Whiton, MD joins cancer care team Skagit County native Michal Anne Whiton, MD returns home this summer as the newest member of the physician team at the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center.

A radiation oncologist, Dr. Whiton joins David Kantorowitz, MD, PhD in providing radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.

“I am thrilled to be returning to my hometown to join the dynamic team of oncologists at the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center,” Dr. Whiton said. “It will be a privilege to provide radiation services to the community in which I grew up. I look forward to continuing the tradition of providing compassionate oncology services at this progressive local cancer care center.”

Dr. Whiton has a special interest in community education and plans to provide various workshops and lectures for patients who are interested in learning about the biology of cancer, the various treatment methods available, and the components of a cancer prevention lifestyle.

Dr. Whiton, who grew up in the Edison area, received a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington and a residency in Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Her training has also included clinical rotations at Washington University in St. Louis with a focus on gynecological malignancies and brachytherapy and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis with a focus on pediatric malignancies.

She will complete her residency training and her term as Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in June and joins the Regional Cancer Care Center in July.

“In the past, it has been rare to see a woman about incontinence who was under her late-60s,” he said. “Today, there is more awareness, more openness and a willingness to talk about it among women in their 30s and 40s who are experiencing leakage with activities as simple as a sneeze or running.”

Risk factors for women include age, weight, the number of full-term pregnancies they have experienced and hysterectomy. Dr. Kevwitch said more than 90 percent of his patients have a marked, permanent improvement after having the sling procedure.

“The most rewarding part of my practice is improving a patient’s quality of life,” he said. “It’s really a neat thing to see them get their life back.”

Urologist moves office to Mount Vernon; offers new procedure for men Urologist Mansel Kevwitch, MD opened a new office in Mount Vernon in February, moving his practice south from Bellingham to serve patients of the region and work with the surgical staff in the state-of-the-art operating rooms at Skagit Valley Hospital.

“I really love the community and think our new location will allow us to be even more interactive with patients and make ourselves more available,” Dr. Kevwitch said. “Patients rave about Skagit Valley Hospital and the people here. It’s a community-based hospital that is here for the people.”

Dr. Kevwitch provides the full range of urology services including procedures for both men and women who struggle with incontinence.

While a “sling” procedure has been common for women for more than 20 years, it has been only the past year or two that a similar procedure has been offered to men, Dr. Kevwitch said.

The sling is a synthetic mesh that is inserted as a support mechanism for the neck of the bladder. A variation of the female sling can be helpful to men who have had prostrate surgery or removal of the prostate.

“This is fairly new for men,” Dr. Kevwitch said. “Patients have been pleased with the results.”

The issue of incontinence for men and women has garnered additional attention in recent years and younger patients are seeking help.

In practice for 17 years, Dr. Kevwitch is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and completed an internship and residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. While completing his residency he was awarded a grant for a Urology Oncology Fellowship from the American Cancer Society. He is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Always interested in staying on the leading-edge of urologic procedures, Dr. Kevwitch also offers cryotherapy on the prostate and selected kidney tumors. This minimally invasive treatment eradicates cancer by freezing and thawing cells to destroy the cancer cells. Patients experience some swelling, but have minimal discomfort, a quick recovery and few side effects.

Dr. Kevwitch said he enjoys the tangible results of surgery.

“I like to identify the problem, set a game plan and fix it,” he said.

Additional services provided by Dr. Kevwitch, who has a special interest in urologic oncology, include treatment of bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancer; incontinence; stone disease; urinary obstruction and vasectomy.

Skagit Valley Hospital joins forces with PNWU

Skagit Valley Hospital is on the way to becoming a teaching hospital in conjunction with Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU), a medical school in Yakima which opened in 2008 with a goal to train 75 primary care physicians each year.

Skagit Valley Hospital will apply for accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association to begin residencies in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine in July 2012.

In July 2010, Skagit Valley Hospital will host 10 to 15 third- and fourthyear student rotations for medical students from PNWU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition, future rotations may be provided for the university’s physician assistant, physical therapy, and social worker programs.

“Becoming a teaching hospital allows Skagit Valley Hospital, and our medical staff, to play an integral role in training new physicians and improving access to primary care,” said Diane Morton,

Assistant Administrator of Outreach and Development. “This is an exciting project and one that will truly benefit the people and patients of the communities we serve.”

The students will spend the majority of their final two years of medical school as members of the community; living, working and serving the people of the region PNWU‘s mission is to “train, educate and encourage scientific research for health professionals who will provide quality care to all communities of the Pacific Northwest, particularly underserved populations.”

Robert Sutton, Ph.D., PNWU’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for the College of Osteopathic Medicine, is an advocate for students to train at Skagit Valley Hospital.

“From the first time I visited Skagit Valley Hospital it was clear they possessed the kind of culture that we wanted to expose to our students,” he said. “I have visited a large majority of the hospitals in the Northwest and Skagit Valley Hospital

Skagit Valley Hospital

gets Skagit Valley Hospital started on a path in 2009 to get Lean by eliminating waste and redundancy with the ultimate goal of improving the patient experience.

Lean is a set of concepts, principles and tools embraced by the hospital to identify potential cost savings, ways to improve safety, increase staff and physician satisfaction and focus on the patient.

“This is all from the patient perspective and patient centered,” said Tami Gilbert, Performance Project Manager for Skagit Valley Hospital, who leads training on Lean.

“Even though we had been doing performance improvement work for a long time, we were looking for a more successful model,” said Joyce Cardinal, Director of Quality for Skagit Valley Hospital. “This process brings in the people who do the work to help solve the problems, which really makes sense.”

To date, nearly 200 people have received training, including several physicians along with staff from medical practices in the community. The training focuses on involving people who perform a task, mapping the process and the challenges or delays along the way, identifying waste and potential for savings, and developing a solution. The problem-solving process is based on 80 percent planning and 20 percent implementing.

“This is driven by the people who are uniquely qualified because they are the people who do the work,” Cardinal said.

“We observe, watch, record the process and understand what the current work is and how it can be improved. We are working across departments and getting people to walk in other people’s shoes.”

As a result, hundreds of Lean projects are under way or have already been completed at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Savings are adding up into the tens of thousands of dollars as employees across the organization embrace Lean.

Examples include the savings of time and improved patient satisfaction in the Emergency Department (see story, page 13); cost savings on rental specialty beds; eliminating redundant work in pharmacy; reduced waste

of paper in reproducing board reports or safety committee documents; decreasing “no shows” in the sleep lab and reducing cancellations in diagnostic imaging.

The process continues to be well received and enthusiastically embraced across the hospital and in clinics in the community, said Gilbert.

“This is community oriented and we are open to sharing our training with other groups because we have seen the results and know the value,” Gilbert said.

“Quick Look” speeds patients through Emergency Department Patients suffering from bumps, bruises, coughs and colds as well as those with more serious potential problems will benefit from Skagit Valley Hospital’s new “Quick Look” process in the Emergency Department.

“Everybody is impressed they get seen quickly,” said Dr. Worth Everett, Assistant Medical Director of the Skagit Valley Hospital Emergency Department. “They come away with a positive feeling.”

Lower acuity patients with minor injuries or illnesses are quickly registered – just name and birth date to start – and given a patient account number, clearing the way for quick care.

The program is the result of a Lean project (see article, page 12) in the Emergency Department to evaluate the process.

The patient is then seen by an intake nurse followed by a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner who can order tests and treatments. As the patient is getting treatment or awaiting results, the registration staff completes the registration process.

Since starting the program in January, the data shows these patients are often in and out in 30 minutes.

“We realized that patients were waiting too long,” said Dr. Kirk Brownell, Medical Director of the Emergency Department.

“Every ER has trouble with volume and our problem seemed to focus around patients with lower-acuity problems.”

While 90 to 100 patients come through Skagit Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department on an average day, it can be as high as 125. Approximately 25 to 35 percent of patients qualify for “Quick Look.” The

highest patient volume occurs from noon to 10 p.m., which are the hours for the new program.

The design of Skagit Valley Hospital’s modern Emergency Department, which opened in 2007 with all private patient rooms, is well suited to the new process.

“It’s our goal and the patient’s goal to see a medical provider, not our waiting room,” said Donna McCabe, Director of the Emergency Department.

Feedback from patients has been very positive.

“Almost uniformly we hear “wow, it’s much faster than I have ever been seen in the ER before,’ ” Dr. Brownell said.

skagit valley hospital Nurses AND Doctor lend a hand Surrounded in Haiti by building rubble, tent cities spreading as far as the eye can see and concerns about the coming rainy season, four nurses and a physician from Skagit Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department experienced the camaraderie of working side by side with medical professionals from many nations and the appreciation of a desperate people.

Kandi Devenere, RN, Brianna Knettle, RN, Christina Jepperson, RN and JoAnna Pattison, RN left on Feb. 4 for a 10-day stint near Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, joining medical personnel from across the globe in responding to the massive earthquake that struck on Jan. 12. A few days later, after a call from Devenere seeking more physician help, Emergency Department physician Kirk Brownell, MD, joined the group.

The five were either on strike teams assigned to go with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to set up daily clinics in areas of the city or stayed at the main hospital – a series of tents – to care for patients. Conditions were rough and supplies were limited but people of many nations and medical specialties worked together to assist the people of Haiti.

Hundreds of people would line up outside clinic locations. On his first full day in Haiti, Dr. Brownell saw 400 people in a seven-hour day, many experiencing infection, scabies, diarrhea or stress-related problems.

“They feel bad and sad. They are desperate and hungry,” he said.

Devenere was especially touched in driving by the collapsed nursing school where officials say more than 100 nursing students remain entombed in the rubble.

“They were the future of health care in Haiti,” she said.

Brownell wrote daily e-mails describing the day’s work and his impressions. On Feb. 12 he wrote “To consider the bodies indefinitely buried in these buildings as I passed made me feel an ache for these people that defies description.”

All involved found the Haitian people to be appreciative and spirited, despite the difficult situation and loss.

“They knew we were there to help them and they were always saying thank you,” said Devenere, who worked most days in the Army hospital. “I figure we each came into contact with 2,000 to 3,000 people and we know we can’t save everyone, but we can save many.”

Pattison worked a night shift to assist with a one-month-old baby who needed extra attention and regular feedings.

During the night, soldiers approached the clinic in a rush saying a woman was about to give birth. Before she knew it, the soldiers were running up and handing her a bundle – a newborn baby boy. She cleaned and stimulated the baby to get regular breathing established and soon baby Christopher and his mom were doing well and were thankful for the help.

“It was quite an exciting night,” Pattison said. “The people were just really grateful for the care.”

One of Dr. Brownell’s favorite experiences was helping a one-year-old girl who had fractured her femur in the quake and had a cast that needed to be removed as it had caused a wound on her leg. With no equipment to take the cast off, he set out with the child for the hospital where he found a Swiss orthopedic team who had the right equipment to help.

“They took great care of the girl and it was really wonderful to see some real healing from the earthquake,” Dr. Brownell said.

The team wore simple name tags made from tape. After assisting a woman with the birth of her daughter, the mother chose to name the little girl Brianna – the name she saw on the nametag of the nurse who cared for her during delivery.

“Brianna was over the moon,” said Pattison. “She was so honored by that.”

There were more bright spots. In the midst of the tent city, Devenere photographed a woman who was getting a manicure, pedicure and having her hair done.

“To me, it was a symbol that life goes on,” Devenere said.

Children were fascinated by the shiny “magic box” that the volunteers used to take photographs and clamored to see their images on the digital camera’s screen.

The Haitians held national days of mourning while the team was there and also had nightly worship.

“They were grateful for what they have,” Devenere said.

Another team of Emergency Department nurses, technicians and ER physician Howard Leibrand, MD were also headed to Haiti in late February.

Skagit Valley Hospital awarded $800,000 to expand mental health center Skagit Valley Hospital’s plan to expand and remodel the hospital’s mental health center is a major step closer with the recent announcement of $800,000 in federal funding for the project.

As a part of H.R. 3288, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010, Skagit Valley Hospital was awarded $800,000 to construct a behavioral health facility at its Mount Vernon campus. The bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Dec. 10, and by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 13, and was signed into law

by President Obama.

Funding for the project was requested

by U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.

“We are grateful to our outstanding congressional delegation for ushering through funding for this essential community project,” said Gregg Davidson, Chief Executive Officer of Skagit Valley Hospital. “Rep. Larsen and Senators Murray and Cantwell fully recognize the need for advancing mental health services in the region and the key role the unit at Skagit Valley Hospital plays in providing appropriate, inpatient services to the mentally ill.”

The project will replace and expand the current 15-bed mental health care center at Skagit Valley Hospital where more than

540 voluntary and involuntary admissions were accepted in 2008. The majority of patients suffer from depression, suicidality and bipolar disorders, requiring shortterm inpatient care for development of a treatment plan and return to the community.

“I was proud to work with members of the community to secure funding for this critical investment in Skagit Valley Hospital’s new behavioral health center,” said Sen. Murray. “The new behavioral health center will create jobs, boost the local economy, and help support mental health care needs throughout Northwest Washington.”

“The community, health care professionals and elected officials in Skagit County have banded together to identify ways to enhance access and quality of care for the mentally ill,” said Cantwell. “I am pleased with this crucial step towards improving behavioral health care.”

“This project reflects the priorities set by the community for Skagit Valley Hospital to provide mental health care in a safe, quality environment. I am pleased to support this funding that will help create jobs and further the efforts to advance the level of mental health services in our community,” Rep. Larsen said.

As Devenere notes: “The need will go on.”

United Way honors Skagit Valley Hospital employees Skagit Valley Hospital employees were honored during the United Way of Skagit County’s campaign celebration in January.

The total raised in Skagit County was $972,651.

Skagit Valley Hospital employees donated $24,825.64 in the 2009 campaign, an increase of more than $2,000 over the previous year. Skagit Valley Hospital was among a handful of organizations to increase our giving in 2009 and as a “Pacesetter” organization was honored for outstanding support of United Way.

SCENAR:

New modality helps reduce pain, improve healing SCENAR – which stands for Self Controlling Energo-Neuro Adaptive Regulation – is a new treatment modality used along with physical and occupational therapy to assist patients with pain relief and healing.

The hand-held device, about the size of a television remote control, operates on the principle of biofeedback. It is applied to the skin to stimulate the nevous system.

The device sends out a series of signals and measures the response. When a change in the electrical properties of the skin is detected the SCENAR sends out a different signal.

Therapists at Skagit Valley Hospital are using SCENAR in conjunction with standard therapies and have found it helpful in reducing inflammation and pain while enhancing soft tissue healing and range of motion.

“It has been quite successful. I believe people are getting better faster,” said Laurie Willard-Mathews, Occupational Therapist at Skagit Valley Hospital.

SCENAR was developed by Russian scientists in the late 1970s and has slowly spread across the globe. Willard-Mathews and Physical Therapist Anne Bratun attended training last November offered

by Whatcom-based Physical Therapist Alan Finston, who received SCENAR certification training in Australia.

Russian studies have shown SCENAR to be helpful in enabling the body to heal itself (most types of disease or injuries) and reducing recovery time. Skagit Valley Hospital therapists are using it for musculo-skeletal disorders primarily in both occupational and physical therapy.

The SCENAR stimulates the C-fibres (comprising 85 percent of all nerves in the body) which act as regulatory peptides to reestablish the body’s natural physiologic state responsible for healing. These peptides last up to several hours and aid in other chemical imbalances, correcting sleeplessness, appetite and behavioral dysfunctions.

Urologist enjoys variety of patient care, surgical advancements Dr. Laurence Lee, MD recently joined Northwest Urology Clinic bringing 16 years of clinical experience at Wenatchee Valley Clinic and 11 years of academic experience as an associate professor at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Lee says urologists “have the most fun” job among medical specialties because of the variety of procedures and opportunities to work with patients.

“The variety of surgery we do makes it fun,” Dr. Lee said. “It’s a busy office practice and it’s a busy surgical practice. I get to do a wide variety of things.”

Dr. Lee received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), followed by an internship at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C. and residency in general surgery and urology at UBC.

He completed a fellowship at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and served as a clinical associate professor in urology at UBC until 1993 when he joined the Wenatchee Valley Clinic.

Urologists have the opportunity to get to know their patients, something Dr. Lee enjoys.

“We tend to be more holistic than most surgical specialties and hang on to our patients,” he said.

“We also tend to get involved in other aspects of their health and get to know them pretty well.”

Advancements in technology and equipment have improved the procedures that Dr. Lee now performs with minimally invasive laparoscopic methods for patients, ranging from prostate procedures to reconstructive surgery.

“We have improved the quality of equipment that allows me to look inside with tiny, digital scopes,” he said. “The picture is just phenomenal.”

For more complex procedures, patients who once spent five to seven days in the hospital and three months recovering are now just two days in the hospital and two weeks to recover.

Procedures to aid women with incontinence have also improved dramatically, he said.

“The surgery has gotten simpler, and better,” Dr. Lee said.

Internal Medicine specialist encourages patient involvement in health care Sandeep Bal, MD likes to see patients play a role in their own health. The Internal Medicine specialist who joined Skagit Valley Medical Center in January works with patients 18 and older and encourages all ages to be an engaged participant in prevention and good health.

“I try to involve my patients in their care so that they are an active part of all the health care they are receiving,” Dr. Bal said. “I treat the patient as a whole, not only their medical needs but their emotional needs and their social needs. I love doing that.”

A native of India, Dr. Bal said a love of science and learning about the human body in her early school years led her to choose medicine. She received her medical degree at Government Medical College in Patiala, Punjab, India and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Dr. Bal said she enjoys the challenge of figuring out how to assist a patient who is not feeling well or is struggling with a chronic disease.

“It’s like a puzzle as you work to make a diagnosis,” she said.

“Medicine is an art and you are always learning something new.”

“You deal with the patient as a whole, not just a system,” she said. I like to establish a relationship with the patient and the family as well.”

Dr. Bal has a special interest in Hepatitis C, a liver disease that can range in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most people become infected with the Hepatitis C virus by sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs, Dr. Bal noted.

“Sometimes patients don’t know they have it, it’s silent,” she said. “There

is no vaccine, but there are some new treatments now, treatments that have been successful.”

Dr. Bal’s husband, Harbinder Bal, DMD, MSD, is a periodontist in Mount Vernon and the couple has an infant daughter.

Physician shifts to solo practice in family medicine Dr. Carl Berliner doubled his commute to work by opening a solo practice office on North Fourth Street in Mount Vernon.

After seven years with Skagit Valley Medical Center, located one mile from Dr. Berliner’s Mount Vernon home, his new clinic expands the bike ride to two miles.

“I am kind of known for riding my bicycle to work,” said Dr. Berliner, whose new office opened in April. “When kids see my bike parked in the office, I tell them it’s the doctor’s car.”

Dr. Berliner is a past president of the Unified Medical Staff of Skagit Valley and a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine who completed a residency with Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound.

Opening his own clinic has been an idea in the back of his mind for some time as he enjoys the full-spectrum of health care for all ages.

“I like everything. I enjoy delivering babies, that is really fun. I love newborn

care. And I like the older generations,” he said. “I have several multi-generation families that I take care of. The continuity and the relationships that you have are really enjoyable.”

Dr. Berliner is bucking a nationwide trend among physicians who today are more likely to seek a group setting or hospital employment. He will also round on inpatients at Skagit Valley Hospital.

“I think I’m more hands on. I like all of the management aspects of the clinic,” Dr. Berliner said. “And, I really like coming and seeing my patients, getting to know them and being their advocate.”

The clinic is located in a 1922 Craftsman house that has been completely remodeled

by Axthelm Construction Inc. The clinic includes a reception area, separate waiting rooms for adults and families with children and three exam rooms. Staff will include two receptionists and a medical assistant. The clinic will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Total ankle: Orthopedic surgeon brings new procedure to Skagit Valley Hospital Orthopedic surgeon Lance Ho, MD joined Skagit Valley Medical Center in January and brings expertise in a total ankle replacement procedure not previously offered at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Dr. Ho said the procedure is similar to joint replacements for hips and knees, using metal and plastic implants to replace an arthritic or injured ankle.

“The ankle replacement is an attractive alternative for someone who wants some mobility,” he said, noting it’s most commonly used for patients over 60.

“Patients can do low-impact activities such as hiking and walking, but no running or jumping. It improves the quality of life.”

Dr. Ho was first trained as a physical therapist, graduating from Tennessee State

University in Nashville. He also spent six years in the Army National Guard and is trained as an air medic. He worked as a physical therapist for five years before deciding to take on a new challenge by going to medical school. He graduated from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and completed an orthopedic internship and residency at Los Angeles County Hospital + University of Southern California Medical Center.

“I have always liked to work with my hands and put things together.

Orthopedics is a good fit for me,” he said.

“With all the technology, education and experience we have, we can actually get people back on their feet, restore function and anatomy better and faster.”

“Having a physical therapy background and being an orthopedist is a plus,” he said. “You have almost a one-stop-shop with me.”

Dr. Ho and his wife, Victoria, have also experienced Skagit Valley Hospital from the patient perspective as their second child, Lucas, was born in January, joining a three-year old sister, Evelyn.

In addition to ankles, Dr. Ho offers knee, hip and shoulder replacements, general orthopedic services for all ages, sports medicine, treats chronic injuries and trauma.

Dr. Ho chose to come to Skagit Valley Medical Center because of the quality of life offered in the Pacific Northwest, the strength of the practice, the facilities and staff at Skagit Valley Hospital and an overall “great feeling” in the community.

Internal Medicine specialist brings variety of experience to new job Ryan Guanzon, MD has taken a fascinating path on his way to practicing Internal Medicine at Skagit Valley Medical Center – Stanwood.

A native of the Philippines where he graduated from the University of the Philippines in Manila, Dr. Guanzon left his homeland where resources and technologies were scarce and headed out to study medicine at the State University of New York in Brooklyn. After earning his degree, he and his wife, a pediatrician, spent three years working in a primary care clinic, hospital and nursing home in the underserved communities of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee.

Each stop in such contrasting environments involved hardships and learning experiences.

“Every single place that I have practiced has impacted me in a good way and shaped me into the person and doctor I am today,” Dr. Guanzon said.

In the Philippines, he worked in a hospital built by the United States that still bears the scars from World War II. With little access to health care, patients only came to the hospital when they were very ill, so he learned to deal with high acuity without access to the latest in technology.

Next stop, Brooklyn, which proved to be a “very stressful move” with gang and police activity a norm in the vicinity of the hospital in a city that “never stops,” he said.

“One of the strengths I have is to be malleable. If a situation arises and I have to adapt to it, I will adapt to it,” he said.

In Tennessee, he witnessed the hardships of isolation and poverty in the United States and the “real world” away from academia.

Throughout the journey, he found a passion for Internal Medicine.

“I actually found Internal Medicine to be the most challenging mentally,” he said. “In Internal Medicine, you have to

essentially be a detective. You have to know a lot of things to solve a problem.

I like the challenge and the ongoing learning.”

Dr. Guanzon also knows the value of listening to a patient and taking time with each person.

“I am a very easy-going person and am not difficult to approach at all,” he said.

“But I am also serious about what I do and am meticulous in what I do. Part of that is listening to my patients.”

Two of Dr. Guanzon’s medical school classmates, Drs. Jhoanna Santos and Rico Romano, both work at Skagit Valley Medical Center and told the Guanzons about the Northwest.

“We wanted to be in a place where we could raise kids and be happy,” he said.

“And we like the outdoors.”

Dr. Guanzon’s wife, Dr. Mariel CastilloGuanzon, a pediatrician, started with the medical center in late March (after the HealthQuest deadline).

Physician assistant enjoys chance to work in the operating room Brittany Rowan, PA-C discovered her interest in medicine at a very young age and pursued her goal by becoming a Surgical Physician Assistant who serves a key role before, during and following surgery.

Rowan joined Skagit Valley Medical Center in January and, along with Fred Renco, PA-C, assists the six general surgeons on the center’s staff.

Rowan meets with patients before surgery to answer questions. In the operating room, she positions, drapes and prepares the patient for surgery, then assists during the case and closes. She then follows the patient to recovery and makes rounds on post-op patients.

“There is something really amazing about someone coming in with a problem

and being able to fix it,” she said. “I find that really rewarding.”

Rowan received a Bachelor of Science in molecular and cell biology from Texas A&M University. She worked as a medical assistant at Whidbey Island Internal Medicine to gain the required experience before entering the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program at Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon, graduating in 2009.

The Physician Assistant program included one year of classroom work and three semesters of rotations in clinics and hospitals in areas including surgery, emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine and OB/ GYN.

“I found I really love being in the operating room,” she said. “As a PA, we fill a gap so the surgeon can spend more time using the expertise they have.”

She was drawn to Skagit Valley Medical Center for the physician group, staff, the hospital and the community.

“The group of surgeons, they are quality surgeons and really nice people,” she said. “Coming here, I really felt like the quality of the medical center and the hospital was really good. And the community is a little smaller and I want to be a part of the community.”

Our Mission The mission of the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation is to raise, manage and distribute funds to assure the continued availability of quality health care services and programs at Skagit Valley Hospital. The Foundation will foster awareness of, and community support for Skagit Valley Hospital through the involvement of the people it serves.

A Letter from the President To reminisce over the past year, I am amazed at the generosity and support that we, the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation, have received from this community. We are keenly aware of the economically challenging time and the hardships it poses on so many. Yet, we continue to see incredible progress in so many areas of our mission to promote excellence in healthcare for our region through Skagit Valley Hospital.

Our fundraising has allowed us to accomplish some major goals recently.

Foremost, we have attained our $4 million pledge to our Regional Cancer Care Center. We are well on our way to fulfilling our commitment to the Mental Health Center. Special groups and donors have allowed us to fund a hyperbaric chamber treatment program and continued support for the Wound Healing Center. Our many other exciting programs and projects roll along.

It is with great pride that we are able to announce that we have passed a major milestone for this Foundation – the $10,000,000 mark since our inception! This is an incredible accomplishment which we owe to the many volunteers and loyal supporters from this community. We are humbled, we thank you, and we welcome you to join our Foundation efforts as we move forward.

In closing, I wish to say a huge “thank you!” to our former president, Judi Seegert. She has given this Foundation ten years of remarkable service, energy, leadership and she just keeps on giving.

June Lulu’s Luau, an event that sold for $11,000 at the 2008 Festival of Trees, was held. It was a beautiful night full of great food and music!

July More than $46,000 was raised at the sixth annual ParTee Golf Classic at Eaglemont Golf course. All proceeds were earmarked for the Cancer Care Patient Assistance Fund.

A New Donor Recognition Wall and $10 Million Reasons to Celebrate!

The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation will install a new donor recognition wall this spring. This wall will present the list of Foundation donors, a photo of the current Foundation president, a list of trustees and current event information. The new wall will be located in the main hallway near Whidbey Coffee.

The Foundation plans a celebration this spring to officially unveil the wall and commemorate the milestone of raising more than $10 million dollars over the course of the Foundation’s 21-year history.

Raises Funds for Children’s Therapy Program Guests celebrated the 7th annual “Have A Heart for Kids” benefit dinner on February 22, 2010 at Il Granaio restaurant in Mount Vernon raising more than $11,500 for the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s Children’s Therapy Program Fund.

The Foundation is deeply appreciative of the on-going support of chef-owner Alberto Candivi who is the founding sponsor of this charitable event that began in 2004.

The intimate 70-patron dinner featured the culinary talents of Chef Candivi and his staff who prepared a delicious six-course menu. Members of the Grace Cochrum Guild, whose mission is to support this program through their annual fund-raising events, volunteered their time as

servers. Children’s Therapy Program physical therapist Cara Federspiel educated guests on the program’s multi-faceted therapy regime. The program provides services to nearly 600 children each month in specialized facilities located within Skagit Valley Hospital.

Guests enjoyed purchasing secret prize boxes and bidding on silent auction items, including a Seattle “chocolate” tour, original artwork and handcrafted jewelry, while listening to the smooth sounds of acoustic guitarist Larry Anderson.

This annual fund-raising event supports the costs of therapy equipment used by patients. In its seven-year history, the event has raised nearly $65,000.

Plans are in place for annual Join us for the seventh annual ParTee Golf Classic July 9, 2010 at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon. The tournament, played in scramble format, begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.

The $125 registration fee includes green fees, lunch, snacks, dinner, use of a golf cart and activities at each hole. Other features include putting contests, hole-inone prizes, a raffle and many give-aways!

This event raises funds to support quality health care services and programs at Skagit Valley Hospital. More than $46,000 was raised last year, and proceeds from this year’s event will support the Foundation’s Cancer Care Patient Assistance Fund.

“I think most people, if they had the wherewithal to do it, would be generous in giving,” Sonya said. “I have been blessed and I want to do something that will benefit others. Don’t we all want to do that?”

In addition to Sonya’s generous gift, the Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends is raising funds to complete the project.

Sonya Beard likes to talk about the many blessings in her life. She talks family, a love of travel, dear neighbors and her two lively dogs “Maddy” and “Beaujolais.”

She talks about a successful career, life lessons learned and her desire to give to the community.

What she doesn’t talk about as much is the cancer that has come back six times in her jaw over the past 15 years and the numerous surgeries and treatments she has faced with such grace and determination. In some ways, it is this battle with cancer that has inspired her.

During the course of cancer treatments in 2007, her doctors recommended hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to inspire more rapid recovery of bone and tissue following surgery so she could get dental implants. She had to travel to Seattle for the treatment and live there for six weeks, which she describes as a hardship and expense.

As she recovered last year from yet another major cancer surgery, Sonya pondered what she could do to help others. She confided in her neighbor, Pam Methner, that she had an idea and asked her to help her gather more

information about making a donation to bring hyperbaric oxygen facilities to Skagit Valley Hospital.

Born and raised in Kansas City, at age 18 Sonya faced the death of her mother and her stepfather just four years later, which forced her to become self sufficient and independent. It gave her a special will to live and determination.

“This is the foundation of who I am today,” she said. “Those early life lessons enable you to handle difficult situations. It enabled me to make it through my life.”

Sonya had a career working for stockbrokers and real estate bankers, plus a short stint with the U.S. State Department.

career with 3M. He retired in 1985 and the couple moved to Orcas Island where they enjoyed seven years of boating, traveling as far north as Juneau. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1992 as Leonard’s health declined. He passed away in March 1999.

After moving to Mount Vernon, Sonya volunteered for 10 years at the Day Surgery information desk at Skagit Valley Hospital, often bringing in bright bouquets of flowers from her garden.

“Having gone through many surgeries, I knew exactly what it meant to the families to fill them in on the status of their loved ones,” she said. “That was the right job for me.”

Due to her recent round of cancer treatment, Sonya hasn’t been volunteering lately, but she still holds the hospital and people of the community close.

“I’m not through yet,” she said, noting she has more plans in mind beyond her gift of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

“I figure I am here for a reason and maybe this is why,” she said. “If I can do more good in the community, then I will.

That will mean a lot to me to know that I left a legacy of caring for others.”

Safeway contributes generous grant to support The Breast Institute The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation has received a $200,000 grant from Safeway Inc. to launch The Breast Institute at the Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center.

The Breast Institute is dedicated to providing the breast cancer patients of our community with excellent care through every phase of their experience from diagnosis to survivorship.

Nearly 100 new breast cancer patients are treated each year at the Regional Cancer Care Center.

“We appreciate this incredible gift,” said Dr. Theodore Kim, Medical Director of The Breast Institute. “The Safeway grant allows us to continue our mission of providing the best medical care for our community.”

This is the second $200,000 gift that Safeway has given to the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation to support the project.

A dedicated group of physicians, including oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and surgeons are engaged in the program, supported by a new patient navigator, oncology certified nurses, a dedicated pharmacist, social worker, physical therapists and dietician.

The Breast Institute will enhance existing programs and add community education and outreach throughout Skagit and north Snohomish counties.

Camano Clinic gains popularity; effort begins to build new facility The popularity of Camano Community Health Clinic, operated by Skagit Valley Hospital, means the only healthcare facility on Camano Island needs to grow.

The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation is accepting gifts to benefit construction of a new, larger clinic.

The new 4,700-square-foot clinic would more than double the size of the current facility. The new facility will feature eight examination rooms, one treatment room and a larger waiting area.

The spacious Sechrist Industries Model 3200 hyperbaric oxygen chamber provides patients with convenient two-way communications, adjustable backrest and mattress and the opportunity to watch television during treatment. The Breast Institute at Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center has a three-fold purpose: To provide and expedite a multidisciplinary care approach for patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer; to offer wellness surveillance visits for breast cancer survivors; and to focus on education for our community in all aspects of breast health to include prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

The new clinic will also allow the addition of two full-time medical staff including a second physician and a second mid-level provider such as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. A goal for the larger facility and added staff will be to provide an urgent care setting for same-day care.

“People on the island are accepting us and we have a good response from the community,” said Gary Draper, PA-C, a provider at Camano Community Health Clinic. “We just don’t have enough facilities to see the patients who want to come see us.”

The ability to provide care for more walk-in patients and services for more complex patients are goals for Dr. Christina Morris, a family practice physician, who works at the clinic.

“We are a very busy clinic with limited space,” Dr. Morris said. “I am really looking forward to having the larger clinic with the ability to see more patients.”

Vitamin D Level Screening

Why should you have your Vitamin D levels tested? Studies have shown a strong link between an individual’s Vitamin D levels and the risk of developing cancer.

New research shows a direct link between Vitamin D deficiency and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis in people with a genetic predisposition for the disease. Vitamin D also plays an integral role in bone health. Other studies have linked low levels of Vitamin D to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Basketball coach to make two presentations Women’s Health Luncheon How I Survived Cardiac Arrest In 2007 at the age of 50 June Daugherty, high-profile women’s basketball coach with Washington State University, suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to a physical. She was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

June has since made a full recovery and become a major advocate for healthy heart awareness.

She is now one of the nation’s most visible spokespersons, filming a nationally-aired commercial, speaking at fund-raisers for the Hope Heart Institute and the American Red Cross and helping WSU sponsor the inaugural “Cougs Have Heart” basketball game to raise awareness for heart disease. Daugherty was named the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association’s National Coach of the Year in 2008.

Daugherty was hired to lead WSU’s women’s basketball program in 2007 and has begun turning around the WSU women’s program, bringing in top-ranked recruiting classes, improving attendance numbers and overseeing student-athletes who place premiums on academics and community service. Last season Daugherty guided the Cougars to an eighth-place finish in the Pac-10, WSU’s highest ranking in the conference since also finishing eighth in 1998-99. WSU also posted double-digit wins for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

During her career, June Daugherty, Washington State University’s women’s basketball coach, has worked with thousands of young athletes.

Why should you have your Vitamin D levels tests? Studies have shown a strong link between an individual’s Vitamin D levels and the risk of developing cancer.

New research shows a direct link between Vitamin D deficiency and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis in people with a genetic predisposition for the disease. Vitamin D also plays an integral role in bone health. Other studies have linked low levels of Vitamin D to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Skagit Valley Ultrasound Associates provides vascular health screenings that include evaluation of the carotid arteries to screen for disease or narrowing and of the abdominal aorta to screen for aneurysms. This ultrasound screening test is non-invasive, quick and painless, and will help you identify whether you are at increased risk for stroke and vascular disease and provide information so your physician may begin preventive treatment if necessary.

Lactation Services at Skagit Valley Hospital

Pregnancy and Childbirth

This six-week course for expectant parents includes information about emotional changes during pregnancy, the labor process, breathing techniques, the role of the support person, breastfeeding and newborn care. The fee is $90 and medical coupons are accepted. Full payment or a copy of your medical coupon is required two weeks before the class begins. A seven-week option includes breastfeeding and a local pediatrician to discuss your baby’s first three months for an additional $20 (not covered by medical coupons.) Classes are offered at Skagit Valley Hospital. Pre-registration required.

Here at the Family Birth Center, we are dedicated to you and your baby’s health.

That is why we provide one of the most inclusive lactation services programs in the region. There are six Internationally BoardCertified Lactation Consultant Registered Nurses available to visit you during your hospital stay and help you experience a successful start to breastfeeding your baby.

The Lactation Services’ office serves also as an Ameda rental station, where breast pumps and accessories are available to rent or purchase. Childbirth Express: One-day Saturday or Two-day Weekend

One-day Saturday and two-day weekend intensive childbirth preparation classes are available. The fee is $95. Full payment or a copy of your medical coupon is required two weeks before class begins.

Pre-registration is required. A $5 discount is available on the Breastfeeding and Newborn Care class when registering for it at the same time as the Childbirth Express class, making it only $20.

This Skagit Valley Kidney Center program is for people with reduced kidney function who would like to explore treatment options for renal replacement therapy. Mental Health Peer-to-Peer Education Program

Free nine-week class for adults with mental illness or brain disorders to help them better understand their illness and maintain and improve their recovery.

CLIMB is a new support group specifically designed for children whose parent or guardian is diagnosed with cancer. This structured program is helpful in normalizing feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and anger in the children, while improving positive communication between the children and their parents.

The goal is to open up the lines of communication between the child and the parent through:

1. Building upon the child’s strengths and enhancing his/her ability to cope with stress associated with the parent’s illness 2. Increasing the child’s ability to understand and express feelings about the parent’s cancer 3. Learning how to communicate feelings to others 4. Facilitating coping with feelings CLIMB is a six-week closed group support program that meets once a week for two hours. Dinner will be provided for the parents and children at the beginning of each session. The group will be cofacilitated by Amber Ford, MSW, Oncology Social Worker, and Alisha Eastman, MSW Intern. There is no cost to participate in CLIMB. CLIMB is set to launch in summer 2010, with an orientation/tour of the cancer center one week prior to the first session.

HealthQuest TV has a new host! The new host, Linda Frizzell, a Mount Vernon native and Burlington resident, graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1982 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Washington State University, graduating in 1986.

Frizzell has a 19-year career at Skagit Valley Hospital. After a brief position as the GoldenCare program coordinator, she accepted the role of Executive Director of the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation. During her tenure, the Foundation has raised more than $10 million for Skagit Valley Hospital.

“I am really looking forward to this new addition to my work! After 19 years, it is still a joy to come to work at Skagit Valley Hospital each day. It is a compassionate, professional atmosphere and every day is a new adventure. I look forward to telling the community our story.”
