Outcast teenagers Jamie and Grace have one thing in common: they are both plagued by The Voice in their heads.
Aspiring musician Jamie is loud and obnoxious and strives to impress the father who made his life a misery.
Poet Grace is shy and insecure, fighting to survive the high school bullies and trying to keep up with the demands of a social media world.
The pair are sinking in their daily battles, but when their paths cross, can music, travel, friendship and a sprinkling of romance bring them back to life?
When I came up with the idea for Skin & Bone on the train to work two years ago, I could never have imagined the voyage I was about to embark upon as I set about writing my fourth published book!
Having battled anorexia myself, I found the process of penning Skin & Bone both emotionally draining and beautifully liberating.
I wove elements of my own struggle into the dialogue of the characters; the unexpected therapy of the outlet releasing and diluting the inner turmoil that I had kept bottled up for so long.
I wanted Skin & Bone to challenge the stereotypes and stigma that surround mental health. Mental health is not ‘one size fits all.’ Everybody has a vastly differing set of triggers, symptoms, behaviours and ways of coping, which unfortunately defines the complexity. Awareness of mental health is increasing, but there is still so much that remains misunderstood.
My favourite chapter in Skin & Bone details a striking moment of power for Grace, whereby she finally stands up to The Voice. It was an absolute joy to write and reminded me very much of a pivotal moment in my own ascent to recovery.
I had just moved to Spain, and instead of being out making friends and exploring my new home, I was lying on the stone floor of my apartment, painstakingly forcing myself through 100 sit-ups.
In a sudden wave of defiance, I stopped. The Voice spat its disgust, insisting that I carried on, adding another 100 sit-ups for my disobedience.
I took a tentative step onto my balcony. The screaming accusations of The Voice grew fainter. I breathed in the balmy evening air and hungrily digested the views afore me.
In that very moment, I made my first move in breaking out of the chains that anorexia tightly bound me with.
