of thankfulness. We face difficulties and there is much to be

1 CORINTHIANS 1:23 Evangelism can be wonderful, humbling, difficult and

messy. In 2019, we wanted to try something different, so we ran Life Explored (a course developed by the folks who made Christianity Explored). After some

feedback from attendees, we have decided to run it again with modifications to make it somewhat simpler and see how that goes.

Our plan is for courses like this to be run every year, centrally at church, as well as in small groups and other ministries. So a big question for us is “which course is the best fit for our church and city?”

This last year, we also decided to hire a full time evangelist. This person would do the work of an evangelist as well as support the congregation in outreach, and

advocate for evangelism across the other ministries.

It’s proven to be difficult to find the right person for the role. Please pray for this vital position to be filled.

In May 2019, we asked ourselves the question: Have we, in fact, been

preaching the whole counsel of God? We needed stats. So, the remarkable Rachel Wilkowski looked into this for us. She went back over the

last 20 years of sermons and produced an incredible report filled with pages and pages of information, pie charts, and a thorough analysis of the data.

Based on that, we have been working on planning out the sermon series for the next three years. Over that time, we will be filling in

some gaps that Rachel discovered, addressing some cultural hot topics, and working through some fantastic Old Testament books that

sometimes don’t get much church attention (e.g. Job, Deuteronomy, 1

THE TREASURER’S REPORT It is with great joy and thanksgiving for the Lord’s kindness and provisions to our church family at St. John’s Vancouver, to report that we ended the year on December 31, 2019 with a total surplus of $77,815 in our General Fund.

Thank you for your partnership in the gospel at St. John’s.

Thank you for generously giving of your time, talent and resources. Thanks for responding to the work of the Holy Spirit as we individually and collectively participate in the privilege of worshiping our risen Lord Jesus through our financial giving.

In 2019, actual offerings before bequests amounted to $2,072,529, which was below budget by $152,471; while actual expenses came in below budget by $190,000. Offerings received from bequests in 2019 amounted to $170,344, which was a great source of encouragement.

It was also a great testament to the impact of a legacy gift in furthering the work of declaring the gospel to those who do not yet know the love of Christ Jesus in our city, our country and the world. Let us remember those who have gone before us

into glory, for their lives were marked by their faithful service to our King of Glory, and their testimony continues.

In addition, our core operations were augmented in 2019 by interest income of $35,262 as well as $100,000 allocated from the Bequest Fund. This fund was established from a single bequest for which 90% ($3,150,000) was designated to an internally restricted General Bequest Fund and which has been set aside to augment our core operations over approximately ten years to enable us to advance initiatives associated with our three pillars that we would otherwise be unable to fund within our annual core operating budget. With the allocations from the Bequest Fund we were able to add staff in the areas of gospel application and hire two curates enabling us to do more to enhance our programs and outreach and other initiatives.

The trustees are grateful for the work of the Investment Committee (Andrew Konnert, Dick Richards, Ewan Wilding, myself and Krista Friebel) for their guidance over the investment of the Bequest Fund which will be

managed under the broad mandate of capital preservation and income or growth with a stated return objective set at CPI + 2%.

May the Lord continue to strengthen us all for a life of faithful and steadfast service as we seek to do His will being ever mindful of our dependence on our heavenly father, the giver of every good and perfect gift. Since he is Lord of the universe, our lives, our hopes and our faith are characterized by abundance and not scarcity.
