A MESSAGE FROM THE 2021 STUDENTS’ ELECTION COMMISSION Dear Fellow Spartans, We, the Students’ Election Commission (SEC), are very proud to announce Virtual A.S. Elections 2021 for the incoming A.S. Board of Directors 2021-2022!

The board directors are the official representatives of over 35000 students at San José State University. They actively advocate for you and create spaces to discuss campus, statewide, and national issues that affect students. Student government is committed to provide quality programs and resources to enhance your student experience!

Despite unprecedented challenges and adversities that have affected, and still affect, many of us, the SEC is passionate about executing an equitable, transparent and enjoyable election in a virtual format. Anoop Kaur for A.S. President What’s good Spartans!

My name is Anoop Kaur (pronouns: she/her/hers). I am honored and humbled to announce my candidacy to represent you as your Associated Students President.

Serving as your Director of Academic Affairs for the past two years, it has been my privilege to learn the power of advocacy and inclusively voicing the concerns of all students. These past years I’ve been able to prioritize and advocate for your educational needs in many spaces, by working on efforts including credit/no credit, online proctoring, anti-Blackness and systemic racism at SJSU. I am also involved in student organizations; such as VDAY@SJSU and The Multiracial/Multiethnic Collective. With this experience, I’ve learned the importance of community building. I know I will be able to serve you as we face the unique challenges during this time. As President, I will work to represent your interests and improve our campus climate.

Thank you for allowing me to serve, if elected, I will continue to drive my advocacy efforts with my passion for social justice and equity, mobilizing our community, and empowering your voice. I will continue to advocate to build a better, safer, and more inclusive community to unite all Spartans!

Nina Chuang

for A.S. Vice President Hello Spartans! My name is Nina Chuang (she/her/hers), and I am honored to be running to be your Associated Students Vice President and Chair.

I am a Bay Area native and a third-year undergraduate pursuing Nutritional Science with a concentration in Dietetics. I value empowerment, student advocacy, and representation. Whether it be media content creation for events, campus involvement, or coordinating service efforts of my own, I am prepared to help better our campus community.

This year, I had the privilege of serving as your Director of Student Resources Affairs.

This position has allowed me to chair the Campus Life Affairs Committee and serve as a Senator in SJSU Academic Senate. These positions have allowed me to learn the importance of amplifying community voices and fostering a positive campus experience at SJSU. I also serve on the APID/A Taskforce and president of the Spartan Wushu club.

If elected, I will work towards increasing transparency of Associated Students and building a strong, united circle of compassionate student leaders to represent our community of 35,000 Spartans. As a fellow student, I look forward to serving you by not only supporting your success and accessibility on campus but also elevating your voice to transform this campus.

Andres Murillo for A.S. Controller

Hello Spartans! My name is Andres Murillo. I am currently a second year International Business Major and I plan on acquiring a minor in Computer Science.

It is with great honor that I announce my candidacy for A.S. Controller for the 2021 – 2022 Academic School year.

During my freshman year, I had the privilege of serving as the treasurer of Campus Village C (CVC). As the treasurer, I worked with my Hall Government and CVC Resident Advisors to create memorable events for residents. I currently have the honor of serving as the Vice President of Administration & Finance for the Residence Hall Association (RHA). As Vice President of Administration & Finance, I make sure that there is adequate funding for RHA events, maintain transparency on the budget by giving monthly account updates to members, and work in tandem with RHA’s sister organization, National Residence Hall Honorary, to create engaging events for all the residents.

SJSU has provided me with a fostering yet challenging environment that has positively impacted my academic and personal life on many levels. As such, I want to provide similar opportunities for the next generation of students as well as help them in their endeavors. I enjoy working with the SJSU community and I hope to serve you as the A.S. Controller.

Maritza Molina for A.S. Controller Hi Spartans!

My name is Maritza Molina and I’m a 4th-year student at San José State University.

I’m pursuing a degree in Hospitality, Tourism, and Event Management. A fun fact about me is I have 1 dog, 2 cats, and 12 chickens. I’m excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Associated Student’s (A.S.) Controller!

I have had the pleasure of working as the Student Assistant at the A.S. General Services Center since 2017. While working at the A.S. General Services Center, I assisted with coordinating and processing the funds for over 400 accounts of Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) at San José State University. I serve as the liaison for RSO’s who have been approved for A.S. funding. I have helped in implementing and managing the A.S. Affordable Textbook Program, which grants students a $200 voucher to buy or rent textbooks, purchase school supplies, and technology at the SJSU Spartan Bookstore.

As a student who works for A.S. and used these resources, I would like to make these resources available to the greater student population. I believe my experience in working at the A.S. General Services Center will aid me in supporting and representing the students of San José State University by continuing the organization’s legacy of student advocacy and leadership. Benz Phan

for A.S. Controller Hi Spartans! My name is Benz Phan and I am honored to announce my candidacy to serve as your Controller/CFO for the 2021-2022 academic year. I’m currently a 4th-year student pursuing a degree in Statistics with a minor in Computer Science.

My parents were Vietnamese refugees from the Vietnam war, who were held in refugee camps in Southeast Asia for several years before legally immigrating to San Francisco, California. I am a proud Vietnamese-American college student and have been relentless in my pursuit of higher education while my parents have been grinding every day to support our family. For the last two years, I’ve had the privilege to serve on SJSU’s AS Finance Committee. I held responsibility for reviewing quarterly financials, investments, risk management, and the annual budget and audit for presentation to the Board of Directors. By the start of the next academic year, I hope that SJSU students and organizations will be able to return to campus and make the most of the funds that we provide.

Additionally, I served on the Associated Students Programming Committee where we created, organized, and executed programs that spark the desire in students to get involved with the campus community.

SJSU has impacted my life in so many ways and my mission is to give back. I hope to count on your vote and be elected Controller for the upcoming year so that I can continue to enhance your student experience at SJSU. Spartan Up!

Hello Spartans! My name is Soumya Trivedi and I am honored to announce my candidacy to serve as your Controller for the 2021-2022 academic year. I’m currently a 3rd-year student pursuing a degree in Software Engineering.

A wise man once said : TIME IS MONEY, but has anyone ever told you the exchange rate? I am pretty sure its skyrocketing! Talking about money, finance, budget….. don’t worry because I am here to help you out!

Now the obvious question : Why me?

Well you would be expecting a reply , wherein I tell you how extraordinary I am, but rather let me tell you how ordinary I am : just like any other student I too have dealt with problems like, paying tuition and managing my household expenses at the same time. I totally understand it becomes very difficult when you have to manage all of this, with your studies going on. But it was because of such experiences that I became good in this area of life. Whether it be making a simple budget sheet for day to day expenses, or whether it be making an infinitely long budget report for a firm, I feel that it just requires dedication and diligence to work things out .

Equipped with skills gained from such experiences and a fire in my heart to serve the fellow Spartans, I hope to count on your vote and be elected Controller for the upcoming year.

Chloe Quyên Cramer

for A.S. Director of Academic Affairs Hey Spartans! My name is Chloe Quyên Cramer (pronouns: she/her/hers) and I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for A.S. Director of Academic Affairs.

I started working as a Student Assistant in the A.S. Government Department in January 2020. During my time here, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching the past Boards work on improving the Spartan experience. I came to realize that this is something I would love to be a part of, and out of all the committees I’ve sat in on, Academic Affairs struck my interest the most.

As your Director of Academic Affairs, I want to be an advocate for you. I believe that there is strength in community, and I would love to continue fostering an environment that embraces inclusivity and allows student voices to be heard.

I recognize that there is frustration about the academic experience here at SJSU, and I understand that the pandemic has heightened concerns surrounding accessibility to resources, student-faculty interactions, and current academic policies.

If elected, I will commit to addressing these issues and more, by presenting student concerns to the university and working closely with faculty and fellow students to find solutions.

While higher education is a privilege, it’s by no means an easy path to navigate.

for A.S. Director of Academic Affairs What’s up Spartans!! I am Ananth Upadhya, pursuing my master’s degree in Software Engineering at San Jose State University. Having followed SJSU’s success for around a year, I would welcome the privilege of contributing to future growth and success as the new Director of Academic Affairs. I am confident that my academic history and aptitude for creative problem-solving will be an invaluable addition to Associate Students Director of Academic Affairs.

I thrive in environments where innovation and experimentation are encouraged and I love to explore new concepts. I am known for bringing about new inspiration and thought-provoking ideas. My diverse background has served me well in cultivating communicating organizational policies, conducting training programs and developing information systems strengths. These abilities, coupled with a passion for the field, are well-aligned with the requirements for the Director of Academic Affairs role. I perform best in a work culture that promotes high-energy teamwork balanced with positivity and collaboration.

I am dependable and creative with a strong work ethic and an artistic eye, but also bring a fun-loving and enthusiastic attitude. Christopher Wong

for A.S. Director of Business Affairs Hey Spartans! My name is Christopher Wong (he/him) and I’m a first year accounting major and a brother of Delta Sigma Phi. During my first year at SJSU, I have come to appreciate my campus and fellow students. I was introduced to unique individuals with diverse perspectives through my experience as a new student seeking community. The connections I have made with fellow spartans, freshman to seniors, have inspired me to represent an amazing community through Associated Students (A.S.). If elected, as Director of Business Affairs, I will work towards fostering transparency between A.S and the student community at large. I am committed to creating a tangible difference in the lives of students and their finances. I will promote inclusion, equity, and the financial well-being of all students at SJSU. I will strive to improve the lives of students and their finances while also exploring ways of enacting projects that reach beyond the scope of the role’s description to ensure that the students emerge from the challenges of this past year.

I plan to accomplish these efforts by investing in endeavors that can further aid students in their return to normalcy. I have met countless amazing individuals who deserve a supportive A.S. board of directors for the bright turnaround we have ahead of us. I hope to be a driving factor within A.S as we all recover and grow from the challenges of 2020.

Antonio Isael Maldonado for A.S. Director of Business Affairs

Hello Spartans! My name is Antonio Isael Maldonado and I am a Sophomore at San Jose State University. I am majoring in Finance and I also serve as Treasurer for my Fraternity which further drives me to pursue this position.

I am a first generation Latino student originally from Hayward, California. I am also the eldest of two siblings who taught me how to be a leader as well as a responsible figure that embraces challenges and creates opportunities out of them. In my family, I have been acknowledged for being very organized and very disciplined with my duties especially regarding Finance. Being raised in a low income household taught me the value of money and the great things that can be done when it is allocated with organization and intention and this position will give me the perfect opportunity to showcase my developed skills while proudly serving my community.

Those around me consider me an extremely hardworking individual, having worked over 7 jobs during High School and still being the captain of my school soccer team.

While hard work is important, I learned that it is not valuable if it is not intertwined with smart thinking. I have overcome obstacles in my past and learned valuable lessons from them that stuck with me and gave me wisdom for future challenges.

I plan on being the perfect combination of hard work and smart thinking for my position and with this mentality I will deliver results that exceed expectations.

Giselle Espinoza-Hernandez for A.S. Director of Communications Hey, Spartans!

My name is Giselle Espinoza and I am a junior here at SJSU majoring in communication studies. I was a transfer student from the College of San Mateo, where I spent one year involved in student life and advocacy. I am honored to announce that I am running to be your Associated Students (A.S.) Director of Communications. As I have made a virtual transition from my previous college to San Jose State University, I am looking forward to meeting you all in person and experiencing the beautiful, diverse campus.

As a first-generation Latinx student, my experiences growing up in public education have revolved around not having access to many academic resources. Over time, I have learned how to navigate my way through life and school while gaining a passion for helping others through leadership. During my time at the College of San Mateo, I was a Student Senator and the Public Relations Co-Chair and Co-Founder for the Associated Students. I had the opportunity to work with several groups on campus and I also lead a team of creative individuals to help promote all that the Associated Students had to offer.

College is filled with so many possibilities for all students, but I understand how difficult it may be to look for them. If elected, I hope to work cross-functionally with groups all over campus to ensure that every student feels supported and motivated throughout their college journeys.

for A.S. Director of Communications Hello Spartans, my name is Colin Foley, a 2nd year Business major from Oakland and I am running to be your next Communications Director.

If elected, I will advocate to raise further awareness of Associated Students student resources through implementing new marketing methods to directly communicate with students and campus partners. Additionally, I look to provide further transparency in regards to the tasks carried out by the Office of Communications if elected. Specifically through the creation of much more accessible reports to students in regards to the status and activities of the Office of Strategic Communications and Public Affairs, the CommUnivercity, the Center for Community Learning & Leadership (CCCL), the Alumni Association and other ASI Boards sat on buy the Communications Director.

Together, we can ensure students are maximizing their collegiate experience through the use of ASI provided resources and that we all are informed in the developments taking place and set to take place at San Jose State this upcoming academic year.

Martha Michelle Mata

My name is Martha Mata, and I’m honored to announce my candidacy for next year’s A.S. Director of Communications! I’m a second-year majoring in Business Management Information Systems, and currently serve as this year’s A.S. Director of Communications.

This year I was given the opportunity to bridge the gap between the student body and Associated Students through our most vital forms of communication right now, which are social media and online resources. While in office, I have learned so much about our students and what they really need, and what they need is to be heard.

Surviving a pandemic, marching in BLM protests, and increasing voter turnout in the 2020 Presidential Election has shown the enormous effort of our students, and I’m proud to be working alongside you.

In the coming year, the transition from online to in person classes will be challenging as many of us have become accustomed to utilizing online resources. My highest priority is to maintain the accessibility of resources to ensure all students are getting the necessary updates and information from A.S. I see first hand how important it is that everyone can fully utilize all the resources A.S. offers and I will continue to work towards a more unified community where we can all make our campus a better place, full of opportunities.

Gerard Pablo

for A.S. Director of Communications Hello fellow Spartans! My name is Pablo and I am proud to announce my candidacy as your Director of Communications. As a third-year Public Relations major with a general business minor, I have developed a genuine passion for the ways that we communicate as a community here on campus. During these unprecedented times and with the classes being held online, it is now important more than ever that SJSU can easily communicate with its students. This is where I can play a pivotal role in this process from the university to its students. As a proud member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, I have served leadership roles such as the Academic Chairman. I have also served as the Vice President of the Infraternity Council so I have had experience in professional settings that require me to contribute to important discussions that involve decisions that affect the Spartan community.

As someone who prioritizes relationships through rapport building, I can be a great liaison for the student body in the creation of communities around our campus. Additionally, I believe that my ability to communicate with diverse campus stakeholders will be beneficial in establishing connections among student leaders and groups.

More importantly, my passion for the SJSU community will push me to create quality deliverables with the SJSU students at the center of every task handed to me.

Ashley Guerrero

for A.S. Director of Intercultural Affairs What’s good Spartans? My name is Ashley Guerrero (pronouns she/ella), and I’m a third-year Political Science major with a minor in Legal Studies.

I’m honored to announce my candidacy to serve as your Associated Students’ Director of Intercultural Affairs.

Although I grew up in the East Bay, coming to San Jose my Freshman year was a real culture shock. I had gone from being the only Latinx student in some of my high school classes to being surrounded by individuals from so many different cultures and backgrounds. I quickly settled into the community and grew to embrace the rich culture San Jose has to offer.

My journey and endeavors outside of my academics have given me many opportunities for growth. I’m currently serving as a Student Success Leader with the Chicanx/Latinx Student Success Center (Centro), working to curate events for our Chicanx/Latinx population. Through my position with Centro, I also work alongside the Solidarity Network, an affiliation of different campus organizations working towards enriching student life.

Serving as a Student-at-large with A.S. Lobby Corps has allowed me to further understand the power we as students have. Lobby Corps advocates for students by researching and recommending legislation, and also bringing awareness to issues that impact students. I want to further advocate for students and ensure their voices are being heard. Through this position, I intend on fostering a space for Spartans to feel secure in sharing their needs and concerns.

Rodrigo Saucedo

for A.S. Director of Intercultural Affairs Hello Spartans! My name is Rodrigo Saucedo (pronouns: he/him/his) and I am a third-year transfer student from Las Positas College, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Chicanx Studies. Being a first-generation college student and military veteran has provided me a unique insight throughout my college journey.

Like other student veterans, I had a struggle transitioning from my lifestyle and mentality when I began my first year of college immediately after my first deployment overseas with the US Army. Thankfully, I had a very supportive Veterans Resource Center at my community college that became a key component to my academic success. Due to my experiences, I believe I would be a great asset to serve on theVeterans Advisory Committee.

I am grateful to be part of SJSU’s diverse population and I know how valuable it is to have community spaces for students. I want to use my platform to uplift student voices and concerns from all categories regarding race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, disability, immigration status, military status etc. I will prioritize gathering students from our community centers to collectively resolve DEI initiatives from the student perspective.

Additionally, I have prior experience advocating for students when I held the Director of Communications role last year in Las Positas College Student Government and have always been actively involved on campus. With my leadership ability, you can have confidence in me to serve you! Everyone deserves the right to feel a sense of belonging and support at SJSU.

JaeLyn Sandoval-Rios

for A.S. Director of Internal Affairs Hey Spartans! My name is JaeLyn Sandoval-Rios and I am currently in my first year pursuing a degree in Business Management Information Systems. I am honored to be able to run for Director of Internal Affairs.

I am living here on the SJSU campus and have been involved in different organizations. In the two semesters I have been on campus I have been able to have the opportunity to serve as President of the First Years Residence Hall Association Government. Also in my second semester here at SJSU I have had the opportunity to join National Residence Hall Honorary. From these organizations, I have learned the importance of students’ voices and the importance of collaboration.

In account of these organizations I am glad to say I have been able to develop not only as a person but also a leader. I only hope I can continue to improve my leadership development.

With this role my goal is to create a safe environment and advocate for students.

Students’ voice and role matters and it is important for me to understand my peers’ needs and wants. Running for Director of Internal Affairs inclusivity is a key concept. It is important that everyone in the community’s voices are heard. With this opportunity I would like to be able to serve the community and demonstrate my leadership skills.

Kadence Sky Walker

for A.S. Director of Legislative Affairs Hello, my fellow Spartans! My name is Kadence Sky Walker I’m a third-year political science major with a minor in Legal Studies. I also serve as the current Director of Legislative Affairs. My time serving you, the students of SJSU has been a privilege that I hope to continue. Given my experience of the position and my three years in A.S. shows my absolute dedication to my role. I ask for your consideration in electing me Director of Legislative Affairs once again.

I plan to continue to fight for more comprehensive financial aid reform that reflects the true cost of attending college and uplifting our homeless and housing insecure students. The struggles and difficulties we all face on campus have only been exacerbated due to COVID. Now as we enter into a new time potentially COVID free it would be easy to forget about those most vulnerable on our campus.

I will continue to fight for legislation that addresses these issues.

As a seasoned and experienced member of the Board of Directors, I possess the unique ability to fully utilize this position. I have served on numerous committees acting as an advocate for student’s interests. I attend CSSA meetings, Academic Senate meetings, and meetings with legislators, all while forming valuable relationships along the way. If given the opportunity I would hope to continue to build on this framework and further my advocacy efforts for the students of SJSU.

My name is Jalen Allen, my pronouns are he/him. I am pleased to announce that I am running for the Director of Student Resource Affairs (SRA). I am a second-year Marketing major with a Public Administration and Public Policy minor.

During my SJSU career thus far, I have been an SJSU Orientation Leader, A.S. committee member, Academic Senate committee member, Inter-fraternity Vice President of Programming, and a brother of Delta Sigma Phi. I currently serve on the campus life affairs committee, working closely with the current Director of Student Resource Affair. The combination of these opportunities has ignited my passion for leadership.

The pandemic has taken a toll on SJSU as a whole but most notably the students.

As SRA, one of my goals is to create a web series that will provide students with the tools necessary to transition back to the in-person experience. This will be aimed at newer students to help them learn the campus and available resources.

Our campus is admirably diverse, but an inclusive community calls for equitable access to resources and accountability. I am planning to host workshops that address all the needs and identities of students. Among these will be a workshop for Black students and other crucial demographics of students.

I am committed to amplifying the educational and transformative opportunities at SJSU. Regardless if students are first-generation or a continuing student legacy, I will be vigorously devoted to making sure every student has the opportunity to be successful.

for A.S. Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities Hi Spartans! My name is Sharanya Kumar, and I am so excited to be running for the position of Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities this year!

I am a Political Science Major with a minor in Economics and Computer Science.

By being a part of three different colleges, I can understand the academic needs of my fellow Spartans. Not only is my educational journey wide-reaching, so was my upbringing. Being raised in the Bay Area exposed me to many socio-cultural and economic differences. Through these experiences, I understand the diversity of our student body and am ready to be your voice.

I’ve always had a passion for clear communication and student advocacy.

Throughout my time at SJSU, I’ve been an executive of Her Campus and an advocate for women’s rights in our community. Also as a new orientation leader, I’ve worked hard to create an inclusive environment for all of our incoming Spartans.

If elected, I will do my best to give students a voice in all matters concerning our rights. As we hopefully transition back to in-person learning, I want to represent the concerns and questions we have as a post-pandemic student body.

I intend to help build our campus back up from the effects of the pandemic, and I hope to protect our rights as students and promote equality.

for A.S. Director of Sustainability Affairs Greetings Spartans! I hope you all are staying healthy and continuing to stay resilient during these difficult times. My name is Arellius Medina and my pronouns are (he/him/his). I am a proud Spartan and a brother of Delta Sigma Phi. I am from the North bay area, specifically Stockton, California and eager to announce that I am running for the Director of Sustainability Affairs.

As someone who has always been passionate about the condition of the environment, I am extremely driven in my area of study, marine biology. After an eye-opening year, I became determined to make environmentally conscious changes within my community.

I am running because I want to advocate for the well-being of students and the community at large. My objective is to be transparent with the SJSU community so all matters regarding sustainability, student success, and student accessibility are addressed to the furthest extent possible. I am firmly committed to promoting projects that will lead our campus into becoming close to zero waste. Additionally, I want to push SJSU in the direction of neighboring universities who have retracted from the usage of fossil fuels.

Students at San Jose State deserve a clean, safe, and inclusive environment to attain an education and consequently mold ourselves into respectable individuals.

I am committed to empowering change within the university and speaking up for crucial issues affecting students.
