What are shipping container conversions?

Shipping container conversions are units that have been refitted with features and accessories, such as access doors, windows, shelving, specialist line-outs and other custom elements.

They are a great solution for businesses that need bespoke storage spaces, such as battery storage rooms, switchgear rooms, office spaces and workshops that have robust safety systems built into their design from the outset.

Through our extensive experience building complex solutions, we’ll work with you to create your custom converted shipping container. Due to their compact design, shipping container conversions can be easily transported to various locations, even following their modification. We have stock container conversions available immediately, ready to ship across the UK.

Our conversions solutions include:

Client: CEMA Ltd

Project: Switchgear Containers for HS2 Project Sector: Electrical Engineering

CEMA Ltd was founded in 1987 and is now one of the leading electrical engineering companies in the UK, supplying and installing the highest quality and most advanced plant control systems.

The Challenge

To assist rapid redevelopment of a water abstraction and treatment site necessitated by the HS2 project, CEMA worked with the S Jones Conversions team to house and deliver two Intelligent Motor Control Centres (IMCC) to allow greater levels of control and support to the water treatment site.

“S Jones presented themselves and their capability far in excess of their competitors. Their understanding of the client requirements and the attention to detail was paramount to the success of the project.”

Special Measures and Customised Designs

Unique appliances and specific design work had to be incorporated to build an innovative final product. This was important to control worse-case temperature scenarios and allow nonstandard height equipment to be installed.

Demonstrating the capabilities of our in-house experts, the final switchgear room was everything CEMA required. It was equipped with unique appliances including a fire alarm system designed to cut the power, bespoke housing for specific interior equipment and environmental monitoring systems necessary to provide effective heating and cooling for the equipment.

Specialist lifting and transport equipment was employed to enable the completed units to be delivered to site on schedule.

Client: UNDO

Project: Containerised Research Laboratories

Sector: Environmental Protection

UNDO, a sister company to The Future Forest Company, are pioneers in tackling the detrimental effects of climate change by developing new techniques for permanent carbon removal from the atmosphere.

Rooted in nature, backed by science

S Jones Containers was tasked with creating two bespoke laboratory spaces that would enable the UNDO carbon team to carry out new soil tests in Fauldhouse, Scotland.

These tests assist in their development of using enhanced rock weathering to capture CO2 from the atmosphere at a much quicker rate than in the natural world. This would help to achieve their mission to permanently remove 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere and make carbon removal accessible to all.

Our Solution

We successfully created two containerised laboratories, equipped with shelving, work benches, personnel doors and windows, electrics and a water drainage system.

All requirements were delivered to outstanding quality specifications, empowering the UNDO carbon team to expand their research capabilities on-site. Using shipping containers has facilitated easy transportation to different forest sites for a variety of sustainable research projects.

UNDO’s mobile labs and monitoring sites across Scotland are the first of their kind. By working with S Jones to create a fully containerised solution, the mobile labs allow the team’s specialists to analyse soil and pore water samples in-situ.

Client: Coventry University

Project: Fire-Resistant Lithium Battery Store Sector: Combustion Engines

In 2019, Coventry University collaborated with global engineering specialist FEV Group to develop a state-ofthe-art technology centre. The £50m centre enables leading international automotive and aerospace organisations to develop the next generation of electric, hybrid and internal combustion engines.

The Challenge

As part of their mission to build and test new powertrain concepts, Coventry University reached out to S Jones to create a 20ft fire-resistant battery store.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, despite their many benefits, can be extremely flammable in the wrong environment. With the evolution of li-ion applications such as electric cars, there is an ever increasing demand for safe battery storage facilities that could contain mass explosions and reduce the risk of serious damage on-site in the event of a fire.

Our Solution

We used our Computer Aided Design (CAD) expertise to generate an accurate visual representation of our bespoke shipping container that would ensure full functionality as a battery store prior to build.

Building from this design, we then fabricated the battery store in our purpose built workshop. The final product came complete with ATEX Zone II interior electrical and HVAC installations, explosion venting and fire protected storage shelving.

“Having the ability to store our Lithium-ion batteries safely plays a key part in the operations of our research centre. I am very pleased to see the design of the container has evolved over the years to meet the latest safety requirements, making it the industry’s best practice for battery storage.”

Client: Culligan Water Solutions

Project: Temperature Controlled Plant Room Sector: Water Treatment

Culligan, a leading water treatment supplier, is committed to delivering state-of-the-art, water treatment solutions while minimising the impact on the environment.

The Challenge

Culligan contacted S Jones with a requirement for secure, temperature controlled containers for their equipment to be housed in. The design needed to enable easy deployment to Afghanistan so army members could access clean water.

Our Solution

After discussions with our conversions specialists, two 20ft double door containers were chosen. Vinyl floor was fitted for easy cleaning and HVAC and gland plate pipes were built in to protected recesses. To finish, specific paint was used to enhance the UV protection due to the higher local climates.

‘Plug and Play’

S Jones provided Culligan with a ‘plug and play’ solution which customers are increasingly requiring for their water treatment systems. This model is cost-effective, requires minimal planning permission and gives the customers a fully mobile system to be located wherever required.

Housing water treatment systems in an S Jones container also eliminates any operational problems, as customers can completely manufacture and test all products on-site at our specialist workshop before being put to use.

“S Jones demonstrated early on in the project that they could deliver the design and finish quality we required. Their technical expertise is extensive, which means if we have a problem, they will have a solution!”
