Welcome to the July Murdoch Monthly.
COVID-19 update As new sub-variants emerge, case numbers and hospitalisations are rising rapidly across the country. At Murdoch, after several weeks of caregiver COVID absence at less than 50 people per day, we are now seeing a rise in numbers again, including several caregivers contracting the virus for a second time. In response to this, we are recruiting to staffing levels higher than our budgeted levels. This is a financial risk, but one we believe is worth taking in order to get the Hospital busy again; which we really need to do from a Hospital sustainability perspective. To date, surgical activity has been most impacted; as a result we now have surgical patients with long wait times for their procedure. In response we are balancing out our medical and surgical capacity by temporarily closing St Luke’s Ward. We were expecting the WA Government to review some of the intra-hospital restrictions but it appears that these changes are

The Government has not mandated this for healthcare workers but I have had mine and recommend you do too. If you haven’t had your flu shot – it is still recommended you go and get it. You can get your vaccination done at the Infection Control Office on Tuesday’s and Friday’s between 9am and 3pm.
Scrubs You asked and we delivered. In very exciting news, over 1000 clinical caregivers will be receiving their scrubs this week. This has been a long time coming and we are excited for everyone to experience some pyjama-level comfort every day.
Our furgiver, Sunny! If you don’t already know, our new Furgiver’s name is Sunny! This name was chosen because of her bright and sunny nature, which absolutely matches our culture here at Murdoch. At the moment, Sunny is settling in at home and there are a number of caregivers being trained as handlers. We look forward to welcoming Sunny to the Murdoch team and can’t wait for you all to meet her.

Am I OK Day Am I OK Day is happening at Murdoch on Friday 5 August. This day is an initiative born here at Murdoch, encouraging us to check in with ourselves and reflect on self-care and compassion. This year you are challenged to think about how you are feeling and what you can do to have a positive impact on your own wellbeing and health. On Am I OK Day, I will be starting my day with an intense gym session because I know for me; this is what sets me up for a great, productive and positive day. (I will be undoing all that good work later with some wine, but I’ll be happy). I look forward to hearing what you all do to check in with yourselves. Take care, Ben

Excellence
Excellence is our new formation value for the coming financial year and as I start to compile materials, I am challenged by how to clearly define this value. The dictionary defines excellence as “the quality of being outstanding or extremely good” but this seems a little subjective. When searching for examples of excellence, sporting achievements rank high,
followed by business advice on how to outperform competitors, then suggestions about personal excellence. Some authors define excellence as “striving to be the best you can be and to doing the best you can do.” Excellence then is both a quality to refine and a behaviour to develop - Living our best lives and bringing our best selves to every endeavour. As a core value of SJGHC it is at the heart of our service provision and how we care for others. Excellence is an outward expression of our inner integrity, passion and willingness to make a true difference. It is our attitude that translates itself into excellence, reflecting our intention and commitment. At SJGHC, excellence is how we choose to live our vision, mission and values – providing holistic care that treasures the unique dignity of every person. Through our Formation Champions we will be exploring a variety of ways to achieve and celebrate excellence at Murdoch this year. Touching tributes flow, and leaders reflect Last month, team leaders from all Wards and Departments took some time out to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of the past six months. They took in the calming surrounds of Bathers Beach House in Fremantle and shared some of the ups and downs they have experienced at work and home during WA’s COVID-19 peak.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom. In fact, for some of us COVID-19 has forced us to introduce new ways of working, which we want to continue post pandemic. And there were a few misty eyes in the room when a touching video of thanks was shared, from caregivers in almost every corner of the Hospital.

Caregiver of the Month Giuseppe Reina Nomination Comments: Giuseppe recently received excellent patient feedback from an oncology patient and his daughter, who wrote: “I wanted to recognise and acknowledge the outstanding care and commitment of your caregiver Mr Giuseppe Reina towards my father. My dad felt so much better when Giuseppe was next to him singing. He would visit my dad regularly and sing traditional Italian songs from my dad’s home town and take the time to have chats with my dad. This was a tough period for dad and Giuseppe’s presence was instrumental to his health and wellbeing and we cannot thank him enough. Dad is home now and I regularly play the recording of his time in hospital with Giuseppe singing, which really cheers him up. I didn’t want his efforts to go unnoticed and wanted to ensure he received the recognition which he rightly deserves.”
Manager Comments, Liz Gomez “Giuseppe joined Murdoch earlier this year to re-establish
our Music Therapy service at Murdoch. This could not have been a more challenging time for Music Therapy to be reinstated during peak COVID restrictions, but despite these challenges Giuseppe has brought a smile to all patients and caregivers since he arrived. Giuseppe has demonstrated how he contributes to the bigger Hospital picture—making every interaction with every patient, visitor and caregiver count. He has made a significant impact on patient experience and caregiver wellness/ morale during a very difficult period and has achieved great outcomes. He has reestablished the Music Therapy program on Thomas Furlong, St Joseph and St Luke wards, as well as initiating and expanding services to Cancer Centre, ICU and Hospice. Giuseppe has shared his knowledge and expertise with our Music Volunteer and Music Therapy Student and continues
to identify and initiate areas for improvement across the Hospital that promote the SJGHC strategy, vision and mission. An example of this is his grant application to investigate the impact of Music Therapy on caregiver morale and engagement. We are very lucky to have Giuseppe—he makes everyone he interacts with feel fabulous!”

Am I OK Day 2022 We are absolutely thrilled to be running Am I OK Day on the 5th of August. Am I OK is a Murdoch born initiative to encourage caregivers to check in with themselves and reflect on self-care and compassion. Our goal of the day is to inspire caregivers to reflect and embrace the health and
wellbeing resources available at Murdoch and externally. We are challenging everyone to think about how they have been feeling and what they can do to have a positive impact on their wellbeing and health. Throughout the hospital our Wellbeing Champion network will be coordinating activities
for everyone to participate in. It is a great opportunity pause and ask yourself ‘AM I OK?’ If you have any questions or ideas for the day please reach out to your Wellness Champion or Cate Thomas.

Hockeyroos squad member and Murdoch nurse Shanea Tonkin, takes on the international field! Shanea, who is a registered nurse on our St Luke’s ward, was named as part of the Hockeyroos squad for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games back in February this year! The team took home Bronze in the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup, in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games. We chatted to Shanea about her experience of being chosen for the team and what she’s looking forward to most over the coming months.
1. Can you tell me a bit about your background in hockey? “Hockey runs in the family; my whole family has played in their days either socially, state or for Australia. I started playing hockey at the age of seven with my two cousins. I fell in love with the game instantly. I loved how family orientated the sport was but also how competitive and physical it was.
I made my first state team at the age of 12 for the WA u12 school girls team and absolutely loved it. From there, I moved up through the ranks making U15s, U18s, u21s, opens. I played purely for the love of it, it wasn’t until I was 17 and made my first Australia Junior team that I realised I wanted to pursue this further and play for Australia.”
2. How did you feel when you were announced as part of the Hockeyroos Squad? “I just felt really proud that all my hard work and perseverance had paid off and elated that my dream was becoming a reality.”
3. What is life on the road with the team like? “The Hockeyroos have two major tournaments on in July- the World Cup (1-17 July in Spain) and Commonwealth Games (28 July- 8 August), so we packed up and moved our daily training environment to Europe for eight weeks. Being on tour is such a cool experience as you get to travel, site see and represent

your country alongside good friends/team mates. It can also be challenging though, being in an intense environment for a long period, away from family and friends.”
4. What are you most excited about, over the coming months? “The next few months are very exciting and full on. I’m excited to play in the Commonwealth games, to experience village life and to be able to represent my country at such a huge event. Even better if we could bring home the gold!”
5. What has it been like working on the front line during the pandemic (as a young nurse) and being in the Hockeyroos squad? “It’s been extremely full on but it definitely helps when you have such a supportive work family. My manager Michael has been the best and so understanding with it all, so it’s made balancing the two quite easy.”

Hospital ties to South Freo Football Club St John of God Murdoch proudly supports community sport through our sponsorship of East Fremantle and South Fremantle Football Clubs. We have a particularly distinct connection with the South Fremantle Bulldogs, through the Lewington family! There are two Lewingtons who are part of the Murdoch family; Summa Lewington, our Nurse Unit Manager in DPU and Annie Lewington, one of our lovely Volunteers. Summa’s grandfather, Clive Lewington was and continues to be a big deal in the WAFL world. He played over 200 games for South Fremantle, won the 1947 Sandover Medal and was vicecaptain of the South Fremantle team which won the 1947 Premiership. The Sandover medal is the award given to the
best and fairest player in the WAFL each year. Summa's grandfather, Clive, then went on to captain-coach the South Fremantle Football Club which won six premierships in eight years during their golden run. Being a legend of the club, Clive Lewington also has a changeroom named after him. Annie explained that the Lewington family has always lived and breathed South Fremantle. “Two of Clive’s sons played for South, Peter and Barry Lewington. My husband (Summa’s father) was named after Clive’s brother, Neil Lewington, who also played for South." Whilst reminiscing on their ties with South Fremantle, Annie looked back on a funny moment involving a football recruiter and
Summa’s father, Neil. “Neil (Summa’s father) joined the Navy early and was a fantastic football player for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). He was approached by a Football Scout from South Fremantle to see when he was getting out of the Navy as South were interested in signing him up. Neil asked who sent him up from South and it happened to be Neil’s Dad, Clive, who at the time was Chairman of Selectors at South. He then informed the scout of his name. It was hysterical to see the scout’s reaction. Of course, he could not play for them as he had three years left in the Navy.” The Lewington family ties to the South Fremantle Football Club continue with strength and St John of God Murdoch continues to support the local team with excitement.

Another da Vinci milestone for Dr Epari Congratulations to Specialist Upper GI Surgeon Dr Krishna Epari who reached a milestone of 100 surgical cases with da Vinci robot! Dr Krishna Epari is one of several surgeons at Murdoch accredited to use the robot, as the scope of surgeries completed by the da Vinci continues to increase. The whole team were there to celebrate the exciting milestone.

Coming together to learn Aboriginal paintings by Turid Calgaret, entitled Kurongkuri Kaartdijin – which is a Noongar phrase meaning ‘coming together to learn.’ It is hoped the artwork will generate conversation around organ and tissue donation and further our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
Many of us deepened our knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture this month, through our NAIDOC Week celebrations and a range of initiatives within the Hospital. •

Lastly, many teams around the Hospital continue to lead fundraisers for our Charity of the Year, Djaalinj Waakinj. The funds will help our Hospital continue to provide life changing ENT surgery for many Aboriginal children in our community.

Q: Netflix or novel – which do you prefer? Any recommendations? A: Netflix. I like any series where you can tune out and not think –The Umbrella Academy.
Q: What do you love most about nursing? A: Gaining the trust of a frightened child and helping them get better.
Q: Emoji that best represents you? A: Smiley face – Paediatric nurses are a positive breed
Q: Something many of us may not know about you? A: I love bush camping and a good fire.
Q: If you weren’t a nurse, you would be…? A: A school principal.
Q: Greatest piece of advice for nursing colleagues? A: Be kind to yourself, and make time for yourself and your family.
Sandy Knight Sandy Knight joins us as Nurse Manager of Surgicentre, having most recently been the Patient Safety and Quality Coordinator in the Quality and Risk department. Q: What do you love most about nursing? A: I love the variety of roles and career options that are available to nurses – follow your heart, your goals and seek opportunities. There are so many diverse experiences, teams and workplaces to explore. The way nursing teams invite and accept you into their teams, and the ways in which the nursing caregivers support each other and develop working relationships. Q: Something many of us may not know about you? A: I spend most of my spare
time in my craft room. My favourite saying is ‘I’m a crafter, not an artist’. I can’t paint or draw to save my life, but I can create the most detailed designs. I incorporate nature into my craft and love to try new mediums and techniques. I love personalising a gift which is meaningful to the recipient. Q: Netflix or novel – which do you prefer? Any recommendations? A: I love reading a good book – how your imagination creates and captures the image of the character, the landscape and the era. Q: Emoji that best represents you? A: The thinking emoji – always questioning, strategizing, problemsolving.
Q: If you weren’t a nurse, you would be…? A: A detective – I love the way that nursing has led me down this pathway. Q: Greatest piece of advice for nursing colleagues? A: Be kind to yourself - keep your cup topped up, look for ways to make yourself feel good. No one can help you, if you can’t help yourself.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) Sounds of the Eurythmics, Wham!, The Bangles and B-52s filled the air at Murdoch this month, as we moonwalked back to the 80s to celebrate an outstanding patient experience score in May. Our overall Net Promoter Score (NPS) in May was 80.8, so to
mark the achievement dayshift caregivers attended our Patient Experience Party, where the Function Rooms transformed into a gaming arcade and delicious fairground eats were consumed in the Caregiver Courtyard. Word has it, some caregivers are yet to shake the sugar high of our iconic 80s lolly shop.

Our nightshift staff enjoyed a special treat too, with grazing hampers provided for each ward. It was suggested on the day that next time we need to have a 90s themed party. The challenge has been set. Bring on an NPS of 90!
