Dear Alumni and Friends of SJND, Returning to in-person learning as a school community and watching Covid-19 rates decline I find myself filled with many emotions, above all, I am filled with gratitude.

You inspire me and fill me with gratitude! Despite the chaos and uncertainty of the past year, you’ve reached into your hearts and pockets in support of our community. You’ve ensured our students get the academic and social-emotional assistance they need during a tumultuous and defining time. When we moved our annual gala online, you logged on, when we handed out to-go pasta dinners you showed up, and when we transitioned to a 100% virtual Day of Giving, you not only gave, you surpassed our goal! This report is a testament to the resilience, creativity and dedication of our students, faculty, staff and community. Despite pandemic restrictions, we found innovative ways to continue to educate, inspire and stay connected as a family. Thank you for your continued support. Leading through Service: Three Students Who are Making an Impact

“Initially, when I thought of a leader, I thought of someone who can captivate and move people really well,” said Hadiya Williams-Cain, SJND ’19. But, after the marketing major at Loyola Marymount University took a business leadership course, it changed her perspective. “An everyday leader, to me, is really just a person who is empathetic and can listen really well to other people. [They know] how to transform ideas into actual attainable goals for people.” If good leaders serve, then that’s exactly why Williams-Cain, along with Bryan McCray, ’22, and Sarah Lisanti, ’23, are developing into such strong leaders. Williams-Cain, who now volunteers with Girls, Inc. and mentors for Cultivating Young Black Excellence, met McCray as his Link Crew leader. Link Crew is a program across North America that pairs grade 11 and 12 students with incoming freshmen and teaches team building, cooperation, and communication techniques. “My Link Crew leader was the best. She [Hadiya Williams-Cain] was a really good friend to me,” McCray recalled. He came to SJND from a small private school, where he was one of 10 eighth-grade graduates. Coming to SJND, he knew no one. “The best thing that she did for me was she offered to eat breakfast with me every day. That really helped me out, having somebody there for me to talk to. Another senior was on Link Crew. He wasn't in my group, but he also took me under his wing and showed me around.”

McCray credits both as the reason he got involved with Link Crew. Now, at the start of every school year, he is part of a team of student leaders who help new Pilots acclimate to campus. This includes showing them around, fostering friendships, and providing guidance. Beyond Link Crew, McCray also helped lead the grade nine retreat. “I just wanted to give back to the community that helped me out when I didn't know anybody,” McCray said. Lisanti’s passion for service manifests in the many different organizations she is involved with, from WE Club (an impact-focused service organization) to the Ambassador Leadership Team, the Red Cross, and Link Crew. “I really enjoyed it,” she said of all her commitments. “They’re things I care about and that I'm really passionate about. I like being a part of it because it seems that our community needs that. We need resources and outlets.” After having been involved for several years, Lisanti sees a little change in herself. “I feel I am a little bit more sure of who I am; I have a little bit more of a sense of direction,” she said. “[In terms of] what I care about, the kind of energy I try to put into the world, who I want to be. I don't have it all figured out. It's a big thing to figure out. And I feel like it takes a lot of time.”

As Williams-Cain and McCray might say, perhaps the most important thing about being a leader is forging deeper connections. “I think everyone has a universal love for people,” Williams-Cain said. “I love everyone already. Go out and see where you can connect and reach people on their level. Hold on to that; make changes for each other and deepen the relationship that way. I think making meaningful relationships with people...you don't know how far that's going to take you. That's just something I really enjoy pursuing and seeing and how many communities I can be a part of just making a meaningful relationship.” McCray, who had to build a new community and make all new friends when he came to SJND, had this advice about breaking the ice. “I like to say that the easiest way of talking to somebody is to find something that you both hate,” he shared. “When you're complaining about a class or something, somebody else will chime in and be like, ‘dang, I don't want to do that homework either.’ But really, just introduce yourself. Don't be afraid to go out and talk to people because usually they're just as nervous as you are. And you never know, they might become one of your closest friends. I've met some of the best people here.”
Though each student has been involved in their own way at SJND and beyond, what binds them all is the experience they shared as Pilots. The opportunities and support the school provided enabled them to grow—not only as students but as community members and compassionate leaders for the causes they care about.

Hold on to that; make changes for each other and deepen the relationship that way. “SJND does not pigeonhole you, you are not one thing,” Lisanti said. “I feel like SJND sees you as a whole person and lets you discover and explore as many avenues of yourself as you want to. That's why students are able to be so involved in so many things, because those opportunities are given for us, or we're given opportunities to create opportunities. Students are encouraged to start their own club; you're encouraged to try out for sports and I think the ability to do multiple things is pretty unique.”

TALK...
A Walk Down Memory Lane Over the years, we’ve heard many stories, some are inspiring, some humorous and some are even cringe-worthy. The history in these walls is rich, made so by the people who have passed thru them. Since many of our younger alumni may not be aware of the history that came before them, we thought we would create this new section If These Walls Could Talk … A Walk Down Memory Lane. Alumni, we encourage you to send in your stories so we can share with our community. It is our hope these “walks down memory lane” will connect the more than 7,000 alumni worldwide and share your “coming of age” with our community.
Janet Reyerson from the Class of 1971 was unable to attend her 50th high school reunion in person, so she wrote a heartfelt and touching letter to her classmates. We are a tribe – connected through shared experiences which have shaped who we are today. While we huddled together on campus, the country experienced the exuberance of Neil Armstrong’s moon walk, the despair of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, and that of Robert Kennedy; the ravages of the Vietnam war and the threat of the draft; the turmoil of protests and riots across the country; the Kent State shootings; free love, Woodstock, and the social revolution; the first ever Earth Day celebration; the opening of the first Starbucks, and the invention of the first personal computer. We heightened our political awareness with mock debates as the states began to ratify the 26th Amendment to lower the voting age to 18, making us the first US Citizens to vote at that age…. Over the years the pendulum has swung, taking each of us to many highs and lows in life. No matter how varied our experiences have been, we have each met them with passion and resilience that we witnessed and taught each other in our years together. Yes, we now have a greater depth of life experience and maturity, but at the core of it are the seeds we planted together right here. Who we were continues to echo in my heart and throughout these halls. Let the love, light, joy, passion and compassion resonate within each of us today and all who walk here in the years to come. Kenn Scullin from the Class of 1944 who is a spry 95-year-old retired teacher shared some of his favorite memories of his time at SJND. There was Father Praught, the pastor, who had known four of us, Rod Stewart, Lou Grimard, Leno Piazza and myself since first grade and would ask one of us to help him out now and then. He would take us up to the Bell Tower to check out the clock mechanism, a special privilege we thought, as it was the highest structure in Alameda, and you could look out for miles in four directions over to the city, San Francisco, down the Bay, or across Oakland to the foothills in the distance. In our senior year, our track team was invited to participate in the prestigious Modesto Relays. Barry entered the high school 880 and Tom Mollard entered the 100, and our school would enter the 440 relay. I went along for the ride and as an observer. Barry ran a fine 880, but was completely exhausted, so when the relay came up, he told me I’d have to substitute for him! So we went behind the fence where I dropped my pants and took off my shoes and put on his track shorts and shoes, and ran the second leg of the relay with Dick Fahey, Rich Irving and Tom Mollard and we won the relay and took home a fine trophy to St. Joseph’s. Those were wonderful days, important days in the transition from childhood to manhood. I am what I am today thanks to my education at St. Joseph’s schools, thanks to the generosity of Father Praught who let me attend when my poor parents could never afford the tuition, and thank you to the nuns and brothers who, by their personal example, show me the right path to follow throughout my life.
