Our school is strong because our alumni are actively engaged in our school. This past spring, one of our alums, Crystal Faith Cajilog ’07, came back to share with our students the value she placed in becoming an active learner and an effective communicator while here at SJND. One of my favorite interactions with alumni happens each year at our senior Kairos retreat. This year, we were blessed to have 16 alumni return to join the Class of 2014 on their Kairos retreat. I am always touched by the personal stories of triumph and struggle they share with our students. To be able to share in their journey of spiritual and emotional growth as young adults is a privilege.

A strong and dynamic preparation for college – buttressed with the values that we cherish as a Catholic school – requires that we continue to make advances in our program. This school year begins exciting new academic opportunities for students at SJND: • The Biomedical Sciences program, a four-year curriculum that will prepare students for a future in the innovative STEM field • Additional AP courses in English and Statistics, to give students the opportunity to expand the college-level courses they can take at SJND

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, One of the highlights for me each school year is reconnecting with recent alumni who return to SJND to visit with teachers and to see the campus. I like to ask them: “How well did SJND prepare you for success in college?” It’s great to hear alums say they are among the best-prepared students in their college classes, and they tell me they are often called upon as peer tutors. It’s a wonderful affirmation that our efforts at SJND are serving our students well.

And as our alums go on to follow their dreams in their chosen fields, I continue to be impressed with their dedication to making a difference in the world and in their communities. In this issue, we’re excited to bring you SJND’s “30 Under 30.” Meet SJND’s next generation of alumni who are making contributions in mathematics, medicine, the arts, service and global entrepreneurship.

Creating a Brilliant Future Eric Baskett, valedictorian of the Class of 2013, is attending the University of California, Berkeley, to study astrophysics. In his commencement address, he spoke about a bright future and gave a peek at what we can expect in the next 50 years.

W

e are here, this day, the last day of our four-year journey together, to celebrate our accomplishments; to reflect on the good times we’ve had, the friends we’ve made, and the lives we’ve led. We’ve come a very long way to be here today, and we have all of our friends, classmates, teachers, and family, to thank.

But although today is certainly a time to look behind us, it is even more importantly a time to look ahead, to our future.

And what a future it’s going to be.

We are leaving here today to build the world that we want to live in. The future isn’t something we are going to inherit; the future is something we are going to create.

Some of you may know that I’ve always been fascinated with the future and have spent time researching what advances in science, technology and society await us. And I can tell you we have some incredible things in store for us. Things like virtual reality, self-driving cars, Internet glasses, are being worked on by scientists and engineers today, and incision-less surgery and vastly extended lifespans, will be ubiquitous within the next 50 years. And even later on in our lives we may see the likes of anti-matter rockets, matter replicators, and artificial intelligence.

But these advances aren’t just going to happen to us. We aren’t leaving here today to follow any set path or reach any predetermined goals. We are leaving here today to build the world that we want to live in. The future isn’t something we are going to inherit; the future is something we are going to create.

Why, in 50 years, it will be Phoebe Grunt on her way to the Oval Office in a hydrogen-powered jet, invented by Giovanni Cuevas and piloted by Brian Perez. In this new frontier, we will create the art, compose the music, write the laws, solve the mysteries, challenge the preconceptions, and most importantly, uphold the virtues.

And that is the most important thing. Because we are not only responsible for creating the culture we will be part of, but for seeding its ideals, its beliefs, its values. What better place to prepare us for this responsibility than Saint Joseph Notre Dame. Our teachers have taught us more than how to pass our tests. Mr. Lippi taught us how to get a date, Mr. Shelton taught us how to laugh at our mistakes, and Mr. Rhattigan taught us how not to be a shmuck. From Mr. Willams in our freshman year to Ms. Micheli in our senior year, all of our teachers have helped us grow into the people we are today. Along with our parents, and our community they have given us the moral compass necessary to become the leaders of tomorrow.

We, the class of 2013, are blessed not only with the intelligence and ability to be successful; but with the strength, compassion, tolerance, and love; to be significant. And I have the greatest of confidence that every one of us in the class of 2013 will be integral in creating a brilliant future. n

Marianist Hall:

The Vision Becomes a Reality The summer of 2013 saw the completion of three years worth of work to bring the classrooms of Marianist Hall into the 21st century and to make the rest of the historic building sound for another century — or two.

In addition to completing the retrofitting and windowinstallation at Marianist this summer, all of the student bathrooms in Marianist Hall and on the Notre Dame campus were renovated.

All of the windows in Marianist were replaced and one remaining classroom was upgraded while the building was closed for the summer and crews oversaw the project.

The funds to pay for the Marianist windows, retrofitting and the bathroom project came from the Capstone Project, which followed the Smart Classrooms Capital Campaign. The combined projects have resulted in modern learning facilities across the campus.

This was the third summer the century-old building was closed for renovations. Last summer, construction crews improved seismic safety using the most up-to-date retrofitting techniques.

New Musical Theater Curriculum at SJND

This fall, SJND introduces new musical theater classes so that students can explore the tools of acting, singing and dance in a classroom setting. More than 50 students registered to take courses in the new program.

Students will learn improvisation, scene study, Stanislavski & Meisner technique, basic music theory, vocal techniques and basic dance technique and choreography. SJND is offering Musical Theatre and Advanced Musical Theatre, both of which are year-long courses that focus on acting, singing and technique, as well as different aspects of theater production.

SAVE THE DATE 2014 Spring Musical

In the Heights The spring musical in March will be In the Heights, the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. It’s the story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, a place where people gather for coffee from the corner bodega and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Student auditions will be Nov. 20 through 22.

Bishop Barber Visits for Installation of New Pastor “We are a trinity: the church, the elementary school and the high school.” ~ Rev. George Alengadan Students assisted in the Mass of installation of the Rev. George Alengadan as the new pastor of St. Joseph Basilica, and Bishop Michael C. Barber commended the parish and its schools.

“I look out and see a happy and healthy parish here at St. Joseph Basilica,” Bishop Barber said at the Mass on August 31. “This is one of the only parishes in the entire country that has a

church, an elementary school and a high school, and they are all thriving.”

The overflowing church welcomed Father George as the new leader of the parish. He, too, said the parish’s strength lay in its partnership with the schools.

He is joined at St. Joseph’s by the Rev. Thi Van Hoang, the new associate pastor of St. Joseph Basilica.

“We are a trinity: the church, the elementary school and the high school,” Father George said. After the Mass, students, families and parishioners gathered for a huge community potluck and entertainment in the Kelly Gym. n

Volleyball Players Dig Deep.

In the Sand!

Located just a few blocks from the beach, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School is building a growing co-ed beach volleyball program, the first of its kind at the prep level.

Both men and women players from the high school’s indoor program are taking to the sand to practice and play at summertime club tournaments throughout California.

“Playing sand makes indoor better and easier,” said Kobi Allston, a freshman from San Leandro. “I love playing sand.”

Sure, it’s a great workout and it can improve a player’s indoor game, but the real allure for the high school players? It’s

summer, there’s a beach just around the corner, volleyball’s fun and it’s co-ed.

“We practice in the sand at Alameda Beach, and our girls and boys go and play in NCVA sand tournaments,” said SJND volleyball coach Eddie Chen, who would like to get other schools involved.

“It’s all about the volleyball and having fun.”

Kobi is one of two young SJND players who qualified for the USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championship tournament in Hermosa Beach in July. Emma Doud, a sophomore from Alameda, also went.

“I think it’s really fun, and I also think it’s really humbled me,” she said. “I talked to a lot of girls we played in the championships, and some of these girls have been playing since 5th grade, and I just started this year.”

Emma said she’s excited to keep playing and to keep getting better.

“I think it helps on your vertical jump, and it also makes it easier to jump indoors,” she said. “I really enjoy it. I always like trying something new.”

Both Kobi and Emma, as well as the other players, may have bright futures in beach volleyball. The NCAA recognized beach volleyball as a women’s collegiate sport two years ago, and that, combined with some amazing beach games in last summer’s Olympics, has made the sport popular with high school players.

At SJND, beach volleyball is a club sport and the boys and girls travel to Saratoga, home of beach star Kerri Walsh Jennings, and elsewhere to play in tournaments.

“Volleyball’s pretty unique,” said Chen.

“Recreationally, there are co-ed teams. It’s always nice that the boys and girls teams can both participate in it, and they seem to enjoy hanging out together.”

Playing sand volleyball has its advantages, too, he said.

Several players at SJND are looking at the possibility of trying to play volleyball in college, and they are all familiar with the

NCAA’s recognition of the new collegiate sport.

“Kids and their parents are talking about it, talking about getting scholarships to play beach volleyball,” said Chen.

The University of Southern California and Pepperdine University are well-known for their beach volleyball programs and offer scholarships for the women to play. Stanford University, Cal, St. Mary’s and University of San Francisco are adding beach programs, Chen said, although often players are coming from the indoor program at those schools.

“It’s definitely growing,” said Kobi, as she practiced recently --indoors-- in the Kelly Gym at a volleyball open gym.

“Volleyball is volleyball. I like both, but with sand you just have to make sure you play smart.” n Fall 2013 Update 13

Exploring the Galapagos: One Student’s Travel Journal Alessandra Zambrano ’13 joined a group of SJND students and faculty who traveled to the Galapagos and Ecuador over spring break. Here are some of her observations, which she also translated into Spanish for her AP Spanish class.

Day 1: Travel Day, SFO > Miami > Quito

In Miami, we had a one-hour layover, and Guilia and I had Cuban food. We ate chicken empanadas. Yum! The plan ride from Miami to Quito was only four hours. The guy I sat next to was from Ecuador, the Riobamba region, where we are going. Tomorrow we tour Quito.

Day 2: Quito

We saw many churches, and at the Church of San Francisco, the people were preparing for Good Friday procession. I learned Quito was the first place to expor t bananas and the second to expor t roses. The Ecuadorian economy totally depends on oil and tourism.

Day 3: Galapagos

Getting to the Galapagos was crazy.

It took three buses, two planes and a boat! We walked to the Darwin Research Center and the National Park, and we got to see all the really unique wildlife of Galapagos. We learned about the tor toise program and how the people of Galapagos preserve the natural beauty here.

On the way back to the beach, we tried fresh plums and guavas, and once at the beach, went snorkeling and swimming. We swam with fish, and I saw a penguin in the water! When we returned to Santa Cruz, we went to Easter Sunday Mass at the local church. Floriana is my favorite island.

Day 9: Riobamba

At lunch, we ate llama. I thought it was OK. We then went to the city of Riobamba, and a truck showed up with a band on its roof. We got in the truck and took a tour around Riobamba. It was a ton of fun.

When we returned to the hotel, the band played one more song, and we danced in the streets. In two days, we go home.

Day 4: Floriana

Happy Easter! Today we traveled to the island of Floriana. There are only 150 people on the island.

The boat ride to get there was awful, and people star ted to get sick. We took a truck ride and then hiked and learned that Floriana has very little fresh 14 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

Day 10: Last Day, Riobamba

We traveled to the village outside Riobamba and went to the local school, where there are only 27 children, in first through seventh grade. I visited the first and second grades. One little girl, Cynthia, was my buddy the whole day. We played a game of soccer with the kids, and we lost. After visiting the school, we headed out on a bus back to Quito. At 3 in the morning, we got up to go to the airpor t to head home.

Students reached out to a local school and also learned how to grill local delicacies.

ith a broad collection of talents in scientific research, the arts, athletics and technology, SJND’s young alumni in our listing of 30 Under 30 are becoming leaders of their generation, taking with them the values that represent our school so well.

This group of promising young alumni is a diverse and interesting set and includes a highly regarded foreign policy expert in Washington, D.C., a talented college golfer, and the creator of an original web-based comedy series on YouTube.

I remember my mom telling me how much she enjoyed Ms. Rod’s algebra class. My mom loved mathematics and teaching math to others. My mom developed mathematical and computer models of the atmosphere at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. As a young girl, I remember being fascinated by her computer codes and by how mathematics could be applied to a variety of scientific and engineering problems. She truly inspired me.”

You’ll also meet an environmentalist who sees a way to use technology to solve the world’s energy problems, a professional basketball player who has traveled the world and a biomedical researcher who hopes to help develop a vaccine to halt the spread of meningitis.

Collectively, they represent the best of their generation. A common thread for many of these alumni is their desire to help others, whether it is helping to defend the rights of Boston’s poorest residents or teaching South Africa’s next generation to become their nation’s leaders.

Here, we invite you to get to know 30 SJND alums under 30 who are making a difference. And we start with the story of a brilliant young mathematician following in her mother’s footsteps.

Danielle Maddix ’08 Mathematics, Computational Research 1

Danielle graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley, with highest honors in Applied Mathematics, after working as a calculus teaching assistant as an undergraduate. She is employed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a Computational Researcher in the Applied Math Group, researching the application of mathematical and computational techniques to accurately model fluid flow and other physical phenomena.

This fall, Danielle begins her studies at Stanford University for a Ph.D. in Computational and Mathematical Engineering.

She credits her mother’s passion for math with inspiring her to become a mathematician.

“The high school feels like a part of my family, since my mom, (Denise Cervelli Maddix ’80), as well as several family members, also graduated from there. When I started at SJND,

After Denise Maddix’s untimely passing on the day after Danielle’s high school graduation in 2008, Danielle’s father, Daniel Maddix, and her uncle, Joe Cervelli Jr. ’82, established the Denise Cervelli Maddix ’80 Mathematics Scholarship. It is awarded annually to the top junior math student at SJND. “I know it is important to both me and my mom to encourage mathematics education in high school,” said Danielle. “The scholarship carries on my mom’s memory at SJND toward a subject that we both love.”

Jon Siapno ’06 Composer, Musical Director In the five years following his debut as a pianist for a new musical at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Jon has pioneered an innovative and energetic approach to music that bridges professional, cultural and educational worlds.

A composer, he has degrees from New York University and Columbia University, as well as musical theater experience from working with a Broadway director while on the national tour of Wicked.

“Looking back, I was fortunate to have been surrounded by the guidance and mentorship of so many brilliant teachers and artists during my time at St. Joe’s.”

The first song Jon ever wrote was a short hymn, while he was a student at SJND. “I don’t know what inspired me to write the hymn, but my friend Gabrielle Soria (see 30 Under 30 list) helped give it meaning,” he says. In the summer before their senior year, the pair created a story, with music and lyrics, about a family in the midst of crisis.

3 Alex Harris ’04 signed to play professional basketball in Germany this season with Walter Tigers Tübingen, after playing professionally previously in Poland and Germany and starting his own summer clinics and coaching program in the U.S. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara as the all-time scoring leader with 1,696 points and was chosen as the 2008 co-Big West Conference Player of the Year.

“We had no idea that over the course of nine months it would become SJND’s first student-written spring musical,” he said.

The musical, Home Sweet Home, was performed over several nights and received strong reviews.

That first musical led to other compositions while Jon was at NYU, where he helped strengthen the Filipino American presence in theater through a series of three groundbreaking musicals produced by New York University.

Today, Jon has returned to his love of liturgical music and is music director at Messiah Lutheran Church in Redwood City.

He continues to compose music and finds intellectual and creative delight in discovering a new hymn in an old decaying hymnal buried deep in the music archives of the church.

6 Nkeiruka Umeh ’10 spent the summer interning at the Stanford Prevention Research Center in the Stanford University School of Medicine, researching the connection between neighborhood features and physical activity in older adult populations. She is a senior at Duke University and is a pre-medical student pursing a major in International

Andy Nguyen ’08 Research, Medicine and Public Policy Andy studied chemistry at Stanford University and, under the mentorship of one of his professors, wrote an honors thesis on the underlying, biochemical mechanisms of cell division, which is important in understanding why diseases like cancer and Down syndrome occur.

He continued his research last year, working at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. Today, as he begins his education at Harvard Medical School, with a goal of earning a medical degree and a joint master’s degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, Andy says his interest in medicine is multi-faceted and not just guided by science.

“My high school education in its totality has guided my journey toward medicine,” he said. “AP Spanish prepared me to interpret in a local community clinic and to do health outreach in Nicaragua and Spain. Justice and Peace gave me a framework for understanding and negotiating issues of ethics and medicine, leading me to lobby for ’Obamacare’ the summer of 2009.”

9 John McCord ’12 was honored this year with the Phil Mickelson Award, presented to the most outstanding freshman golfer in the NCAA Division III. The rookie University of Redlands golfer from Oakland didn’t pick up a golf club until sophomore year at SJND. He received a host of accolades during the 2013 season, including a spot on the All-West Region First Team and selections as the Ken Sherman Freshman of the Year for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

10 Gabrielle Soria ’06 is pursuing a career in advertising “to create materials for the public that not only reflective of the public and their uniqueness, but is celebratory of it as well.” She was one of nine finalists out of thousands of exceptional applicants for the DiversityJobs Scholarship Award, a scholarship for college and graduate students who represent diversity. She said her transition from the Bay Area to going to college in Boston inspired her career choice. “I did my undergraduate studies at

Emerson College. Experiencing Emerson, and the city of Boston itself, was a hearty dose of culture shock for a girl who’d grown up in the California Bay Area, surrounded by diversity.”

11 Allison Meins ’09 graduated from UC Santa Barbara in June, after spending her junior year studying in Granada, Spain, where she became fluent in Spanish while working with a professor on psychological research and translating research articles. This fall, she begins her four-year doctorate in psychology program at Alliant International University’s California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco.

Crystal juggled three jobs as a student at UC Santa Cruz, as well as a full load of classes. She was chosen as the speaker for her college graduation, because of her humanity, kindness and hard work on campus. Today, she works with low-income dual diagnosis patients, and every day is a challenge; however, she still looks to the leadership skills she developed in high school to assist her in setting her patients up for success.

“Learning how to facilitate meetings, how to communicate between different groups of people, how to recognize your audience, and learning how to set healthy and obtainable goals translates into the work that I currently do with mental health patients,” Crystal said.

After co-authoring two scientific publications and presenting at symposiums on the topic, her interest was solidified, and she is pursuing a master’s degree in public health, with a concentration in infectious disease and vaccinology, at UC Berkeley.

15 Zak Loring ’03 is a physician at UCSF, after graduating from Duke University Medical School and having published seven peer-reviewed articles.

A UCLA grad, he has had two papers published by the Journal of Electrocardiology, and he conducted research at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C. He also worked at a pediatric hospital in London. He plans to specialize in cardiology.

18 Nicholas Tubbs ’09 is a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June. He is with the Medical Service Corps and will attend flight school to begin his career as a Medivac pilot for the Army.

His experience as a college athlete, playing basketball at UC Davis after playing at SJND, and his master’s degree in sport management from Columbia University and MBA from University of San Francisco prepared him well for his work. Today, he works with top corporate leaders to raise millions of dollars for the United Way’s Community Schools program.

22 Danielle Campbell ’06 is with the architecture firm Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, Inc. She also is active with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at build sites and organizing Build Days. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and minors in historic preservation and

Italian. She worked at an historic preservation internship with the National Park Service in Alaska, helping to document a Klondike gold-rush building. A member of the University of Oregon equestrian team, she also competed in western equitation competitions.

23 Jesse Swatling Holcomb ’09 has launched an original comedy web series on YouTube called “Friends Without Benefits” that he also stars in.

He’s been compared to Conan O’Brien, and the series just wrapped up its first season to positive reviews.

24 Lorenzo Hutton ’03 is a commercial mortgage credit analyst at Wells Fargo in San Francisco, after working at Ernst & Young following his graduation from UC Santa Cruz, where he played basketball.

25 Joseph Vacca ’09 is entering the field of stem cell research, pursuing a graduate degree in the biomedical sciences at the engineering school at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, after graduating in June with a degree in biochemistry.

Ron sees a direct link between education and leadership, and he is keen on sharing leadership lessons, whether it is in Africa or in the classroom at Stanford. He credits the year he spent as captain of the 2003-2004 state championship basketball team at SJND with teaching him a lot about leadership.

He also worked for the school’s sports law clinic, learning about the intersection of sports, business and law. At his graduation from Santa Clara University in June, he was chosen to introduce former U.S. Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Leon Panetta, the 2013 commencement speaker at Santa Clara. A classics major, he intends to pursue a career in law.

29 Sarah Lewis ’02 has innovative ideas about combining environmental science and tech and creating a renewable energy source from the hardy agave—yes, the succulent from which tequila is made. She just received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in Environmental Science, Policy and Management with

a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite remote sensing, after working for URS Corp. in Oakland, the engineering and tech services firm, where she created geospatial databases. A UCLA grad, with an undergraduate degree in geography and environmental science, she wants to develop applied geospacial technologies, with a focus on the environment.

30 Rachel-Anne Palacios ’04 has made a name for herself in the Bay Area art world.

A self-taught, multicultural artist, she designs pieces that reflect the culture, religion and traditional values she grew up with in Oakland. She is an active member of the Dia de los Muertos Committee at the Oakland Museum, and works as the exhibit guide coordinator for the annual Dia de Los Muertos exhibition. n

t. Joseph High School’s contribution to my educational and spiritual formation far exceeds the financial sacrifice my parents made on my behalf almost 50 years ago. It has seemed the least I could do is give something back to the school for what it has done for me and continues to do for my family.

In 2012, my grandchild, Jaelin McCreary, graduated from Saint Joseph Notre Dame and received a full academic scholarship for four years to the University of Santa Clara. She is enjoying one of the finest collegiate experiences available anywhere, largely because of the serendipitous desire of a very young man in 1962 who thought St. Joseph High School might be a better place for an education than the other, more popular, options of that time – and the willingness of my parents to invest in a future they wouldn’t see.

St. Joseph High School not only has been, but remains, an excellent place to receive a superior academic, ethical and physical education. It truly deserves our investment.

Make a Gift for the Future How to Leave a Legacy at Saint Joseph Notre Dame 1. Prepare a will.

Only 40 percent of those who pass away have one.

Without a will, you won’t have a say where your assets will go.

2. After taking care of your family, leave a gift in your will for Saint Joseph Notre Dame.

Seventy percent of us give to charity each year.

Surprisingly, less than 6 percent have included non-profits in an estate plan. Imagine the impact if everyone who cared about the mission of SJND made a gift from their estates.

3. Leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the assets in your will to SJND. “I give, devise, and bequeath to Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School, Alameda, CA, the sum of $____ or ____ % of my estate (or a description of the specific asset), for the benefit of Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School and its general purposes.”

4. Name SJND as a beneficiary of your pension plan, IRA or retirement plan.

Doing so can avoid estate and income taxes (up to 70 percent) that might otherwise be due when your plan is paid out. Because of the legal and tax complexities of dealing with these types of accounts, be sure to seek the advice of an attorney or accountant when designating SJND as partial beneficiary of a retirement account.

5. Name SJND as the owner and/or beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy.

Properly structured, life insurance policies allow money to grow tax free, and the benefit will be transferred tax-free to SJND. 6. Have you made plans to leave a legacy at SJND? If so, please let us know so we can thank you and ensure your wishes are met.

Scholarship Named for Coach’s Late Wife Coach Tony Fong, in his 17th year coaching cross country and track at SJND, lost his wife to breast cancer in November, two weeks before the state cross country championships. The Pilots went on to win the school’s first cross country championship, with the runners dedicating their victory to Denise Fong.

Now, Coach Fong is dedicating a scholarship in his late wife’s memory to benefit students at SJND who need tuition assistance. He established the scholarship with a $75,000 endowed gift to the school, which will provide scholarships to students each year.

“The SJND kids were like our kids. Denise loved the kids,” said Tony Fong. He plans to host 5K runs and other events so that others can contribute to the scholarship in Denise’s memory.

“Denise Fong was a member of the SJND family,” said Rebecca Bischoff, assistant principal of institutional advancement at SJND. “She was known and loved by many. We’re honored that Tony is memorializing her commitment to education and to SJND students in this way. The scholarship will be a lasting tribute to her memory and will serve students for generations.” n

give to Saint Joseph Notre Dame, because it once gave to me. With the financial aid that I received during my time as a student, my parents were able to send me to SJND, along with my two older sisters.

SJND’s education prepared me for college, which prepared me for graduate school. I could not have gone as far as I have without the education I first received from SJND. I strongly believe in giving back, so that others can take advantage of the same opportunities.

Where Our Pilots Are Flying Now 1950s

The Rev. Bill Delaney ’54, CPPS, of Los Angeles, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood at St. Barnabas Church on August 10. He was also baptized in that church and received his first holy communion there.

Sister Jean Stoner ’59, of New York, had a restful and relaxing summer and is back in New York City as the Sisters of Notre Dame representative to the United Nations. “I’m gearing up for a new UN year beginning in September,” she said. “Two of our sisters are coming this fall to spend a couple of months as interns in the office. One is Japanese and the other Nigerian so we will really be able to bring an extra international flavor to our work.”

1960s

Larry Bellusa ’65, of Lafayette, organized a great afternoon of camaraderie at Golden Gate Fields for the SJND Alumni Day at the races in May. Thirty alums enjoyed the day at the Turf Club with a fabulous buffet, drinks and, of course, horse races. The fifth race was

dedicated to the SJND Alumni Association and the group watched the race from the winner’s circle with Sam Spear ’67, who has worked in horse-racing and broadcasting since 1977.

Marie Marich Tapia ’66, of Mountville, Pa., authored a book, “The Red-Haired Man,” and it is available on Amazon.com and at Books.

Josie ’05 graduated from Holy Names University in ’09, earning her BA in English and Multi-Media Arts and Communication, and, in May 2013, Sophia ’09 graduated from Holy Names University earning her BA in Liberal Studies. Both Josie and Sophia received summa cum laude honors.

Laurence (Laura) DiRuocco ’82 Zambrano and her husband, Alejandro, of Alameda, celebrated their daughter Alessandra’s graduation from SJND on June 1. Emma Cinco ’85 and Gia DeGrano ’83, both of San Leandro, worked as co-chairs of the SJND Crab Feed and Auction and want to offer a big thank you to the parents, volunteers, alumni, faculty, students, sponsors and guests who made the 32nd Annual Crab Feed and Auction a success.

The fundraiser raised $79,000 for tuition assistance and athletics. Mark your calendars! The next Crab Feed is Feb. 1.

Kirk McHenry ’87, of Oakland, has been listed as one of the top ten comedians in the Bay Area, and he dedicated a show in April at the Englander in San Leandro to the memory of two Pilot friends, Terry Yancey ’84 and Terry Fedor ’86.

John Campbell ’88, of Alameda, and his wife, Vickey, welcomed their son Nicholas John, born May 10. He and his mother, as well as his sisters, are doing well.

2000s

Jessica Reader ’05 is in her fourth year pursuing a joint medical degree and master’s degree in public health at Tufts University in Boston. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in biological sciences and has co-authored a research paper on diabetes.

Rachael Montoya ’07, of Davis, was recognized by the Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society at UC Davis for her studies in sociology, and she hopes to enter the master’s degree program at Davis next year.

1990s

Alicia Dlugosh ’95 Trost, of Benicia, was the face of the BART transit agency much of the summer as she worked as spokesperson for the agency, interacting with the media who were covering the transit strike in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Galen Soria ’09, of Oakland, donated a 1974 Hammond organ to SJND for the students in the music program. Galen and his father bought the organ in South Dakota and refurbished it. “Now we have an organ for the students to play,” said Paula Cekola, music director at SJND. With bench and pedals, the organ weighs nearly 500 pounds, with the big sound of the kind of organ that was traditionally played in a theater.

2010s

Taylor Ashford ’10, of Alameda, graduated a year early from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in political science with a global politics emphasis. Her goal is to work for an international corporation. n

Jason Kidd ’92

Retires as a Player from the NBA After 19 seasons in the NBA, Jason Kidd ’92 announced his retirement as a player last spring, having realized the “spectacular promise he displayed as a prep star,” one journalist wrote.

Kidd, 40, was named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, just 10 days after he retired as a player. Many alumni and former faculty congratulated Kidd on his retirement.

“He played with confidence and always with flare, showing his skills on the court but most importantly his leadership and especially his unselfishness,” said former principal Tony Aiello.

“These were qualities very apparent when he was a Pilot, beginning in his freshman year, alongside Calvin Byrd ’89 and in leading the Pilots to consecutive Div. 1 state titles. He raised the level of play and helped his teammates excel.”

“Thank you Jason Kidd for a spectacular career,” added Patrick McAtee ’68. “You represented Pilot Spirit well!”

“He was bound for greatness,” the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “that much was clear.” n

Alumni Come Back and Give Back

A

big group from the Class of 1978 got together for their 35th reunion on August 3 in Alameda. They met up at the 1400 Club on Webster, at Central Avenue, and they had a great time, said Laura Vinella ’78.

Meanwhile, a group of recent SJND alums helped lead the senior retreat in August, taking the entire Class of 2014 on Kairos retreat for a stirring opportunity for reflection, faithbuilding and camaraderie. This was Kairos 54.

And, in April, nearly two dozen former Pilots baseball players came out for the 8th Annual Ray Freitas Memorial Alumni Baseball Game, having fun with current players and sticking around for a BBQ with friends and family. n

SJND Welcomes New Alumni Relations Director “I’m so happy to be here at SJND, working with this community to help make that transformative education experience a reality for more young people.” and an Alameda resident, McFarland said she is looking forward to bringing her development experience to SJND.

Mollie McFarland, a graduate of Santa Clara University and New York University who has worked for more than a decade in arts administration in the Bay Area, is SJND’s new Alumni Relations Director and will also direct the school’s Annual Fund.

“I always loved the school environment and learning,” she said. “My time at Santa Clara University was particularly formative for me, giving me the confidence and skills I needed to go out and achieve my personal best. I’m so happy to be here at SJND, working with this community to help make that transformative education experience a reality for more young people.”

She graduated from Santa Clara University in 1994 with a BFA in Theater and Dance

and a BA in English. In 1996, she received her MFA in Dance from NYU›s Tisch School of the Arts. Following her education, McFarland worked for several performing arts organizations, and she comes to SJND from an 11-year tenure at AXIS Dance Company, an Oakland-based contemporary dance company of dancers with and without physical disabilities, where she served as development director.

Prior to her career in arts administration, Mollie danced with the Second Avenue Dance Company at NYU and The Sabrina Peck Dance Ensemble. n

THANK YOU We thank our teachers.

Aside from our parents, they had a major hand instilling in us the values of hard work, diligence, organization, determination and perseverance. They have been here every day to help us expand our knowledge, and, yes, in some cases, even make learning fun.

For example, who did not get addicted to Mr. Shelton’s online survival game that tested how long you could support a family?

Or how about when Mrs. Norris and Mr. Ritter both did raps to teach about Shakespeare and the Industrial Revolution? Whether it meant blowing up something in the Quad with Mr. Fong during chemistry or having a debate about who is the best president with Mr. Lippi, we did learn a lot.

And also, thanks to Mr. Lippi’s dating and job interview advice, there’s really no question about whether we will succeed in life.

We have been entrusted with the power to leave our imprint on the world and make a difference as graduates of SJND. Every one of us is capable of attaining greatness. Therefore, it is my prayer that we never forget what we learned at SJND and that we approach every task with enthusiasm and a sense of fun and continue to bring joy into people’s lives.
