The next morning, SJND Faculty and Staff came together faithfully to train and adjust to a new model of teaching and learning, all the while leaning on each other for support.

As we continued adapting to distance learning we mourned the loss of two beloved educators, Mrs. Judy KoneffKlatt and Mrs. Kristina Taylor (née Stone). Both women had a special presence that touched the lives of many. They were my colleagues, my friends, my sisters in Christ.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of SJND, Like many of you, these past few months have challenged me, but they have also opened my eyes to all we have to be grateful for, things like our health, our families, and our homes. It has also reinforced my gratitude and love for this special family— the SJND Pilot Family.

In April 2020, I was honored to have been named the first female Principal in Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s history. As a native San Franciscan from the Sunset District, I attended Catholic schools my entire educational career.

My parents, like many of you, valued and were committed to Catholic school education and made many sacrifices in order for my two brothers and I to receive a quality, faith-based education. When I visited SJND, I instantly felt the warmth on campus and saw the deep commitment the faculty and staff had to the school’s mission. I knew in my heart I wanted to be a part of an institution that was “faith-filled, diverse and welcoming.”

Part of our mission is to take action on the ongoing equity and inclusion work necessary to provide every SJND community member a safe place to learn and teach and where each individual is embraced. We need to ensure that our beloved community continues to work together to move forward and make positive changes so that the tradition of our Pilot family spirit continues. This is a priority and the beginning of a long journey that will take time, commitment and focus and I look forward to leading this critical work. It is our goal that the school’s mission be lived out by our students beyond Chestnut Street and contribute to a more just and equitable world. I am confident that current and future Pilots will be change makers and live out God’s purpose.

On March 12, 2020, as cases of the novel coronavirus disease, Covid-19, swept across the U.S., SJND made the voluntary decision to activate our long-term dismissal plan.

Words cannot describe how proud I am of the maturity and resilience our students have shown these past few months— especially the Class of 2020. For some, this may be the biggest challenge they have faced in their life, separated from friends and loved ones, their world turned upside down.

And yet, they held their heads high and remained focused on the future.

In this issue we honor some of our alumni who are first responders in the on-going health crisis that sweeps our country. While this year has not been easy, I am constantly inspired by our community. To our parents, the SJND faculty and staff are always grateful for your partnership. However, now more than ever, we owe you our utmost respect and admiration for your support, as you balanced work, home and other responsibilities, while also helping your student adjust to distance learning. To our teachers, I am in awe of you and the tireless work you put in to meet the needs of our students during this time. You have shown immense creativity, flexibility and positivity. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. And finally, to the essential workers and first responders in our community: thank you, thank you, thank you.

While this upcoming year may look different from years past, we are excited for what it holds; resting assured in our strength as a community, empowered by our mission and hopeful for a brighter future.

Get to Know Father Mario Rizzo Parochial Administrator, St. Joseph Basilica Q: You are not new to the St. Joseph Family; I understand you served as a Deacon here prior to your time at Christ the King.

What stands out to you about the St. Joseph community?

There are many things that stand out to me about the St. Joseph community. One of them is its diversity. St. Joseph is a microcosm of the East Bay, but also of the universal Church. We have parishioners and students from every continent. And yet, far from dividing us, we are a community that comes together to celebrate our different cultures.

Another thing that stands out to me, which is a fruit of the Shelter-in-Place order, is how the community has come together to support each other. Each different entity, the elementary school, the high school, and the Basilica, have all found innovative ways to connect, not because we have to, but because we want to. We find comfort in each others’ presence, which is something that has been fostered here for many years. I feel privileged to be a part of this community that actively extends itself to others.

Q: For our students, you bring a very relatable presence, coming from a mixed-faith family, growing up in the East Bay and attending UC Berkeley.

Take us through your journey from suburban life in Lafayette/ Moraga, to your time at Cal, and now to priesthood. What drew you to this vocation?

My path to priesthood was not what you may think, and yet, if you get to 6 6Saint Saint Joseph Joseph Notre Notre Dame Dame

know other priests, you would see that we have similar stories. Most of these include some participation in the secular world, and a coming to see that what they were doing was not for them. This isn’t to say that the secular world is bad, not at all; most of us are called to live in the world. But for a man with a vocation to the priesthood, it usually takes some trial and error.

For me, I was a theater major in college, and then afterwards was working as a freelance lighting designer. I wasn’t really strong in my faith, but I had a solid foundation, which came from my Catholic father and Jewish mother. My five siblings and I grew up celebrating Christmas and Easter, as well as Hanukkah and Passover. So, I always knew deep within that there was a God, just not that He knew me personally, and loved me personally, and had a unique plan for me, and me alone, that would make me happy.

As I continued my work in theater, instead of feeling a sense of satisfaction, I felt unsatisfied, as if there was something more that I was meant to do. So, I began to explore my Catholic faith a little bit more, which was a result of singing at Church to earn some extra money.

Sharing that gift of singing at Sunday Mass led to singing at funerals, which led me to go to daily Mass, and then Adoration. Slowly but surely, with the help from some good priests, I began to discern the priesthood.

This was a quick process. I visited St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park one day in the summer of 2011, and pretty abruptly decided to apply. I sensed that I could see myself serving

the people of the Church, who had inspired me by their simple examples of holiness.

I entered the seminary in August, and always share with people how from the day I moved in, I felt a peace like I had never felt before. Through a long and winding path of trying different things and different jobs, most of which ended in failure, God led me to a place of real peace and joy.

Q: What is your vision for the future of St. Joseph Basilica and the St. Joseph community?

In thinking about how I got to the seminary and what I learned there, I think it is fair to say that much of what I went through and experienced is something a parish should also do. After all, my home parish of St. Monica saw three men join the seminary in a period of 10 years; before that, in its 50+ years of existence or so, it saw zero.

So, some of these things are a beautiful and reverent liturgy. This includes everything from friendly ushers and greeters, to beautiful music of different genres. I want people to leave Sunday Mass having participated in something, and experienced something, that they cannot get out in the world: a beautiful liturgy with a welcoming community that loves to sing.

This means the parish will also need to be a place of education. We cannot simply ask people to go to Mass, we have to educate continually, especially our adults and parents, because there is so much to learn about our faith and pass on. I would narrow our faith

formation to these areas: Scripture, the Sacraments, especially the Mass and the Eucharist, and Prayer, which includes the lives of the Saints.

If we do these things well, then that will lead us to go out into the world to serve, and to share what we have learned; what has transformed us. Having learned about the story of God’s love for us in Scripture, and having encountered Him in the Sacraments and in prayer, our community cannot be anything but impelled to go out, to share the Gospel - the Good News - which is the meaning of Evangelization. Each member of the St. Joseph community should feel empowered, and equipped to meet the poor, and to talk to their loved ones and strangers about Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church, and be able to invite them to come and experience what the Church has to offer.

Q: As you know, this is a trying time for our community - and the world - as we navigate how to live through a pandemic.

What spiritual guidance can you give to individuals struggling during this time?

A couple of things. First, a passage from John’s Gospel: “...the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). Jesus, of course, is the Light of the World, and he shines brilliantly, especially in the darkness. Naturally, we think, if he is God, why does he allow the darkness in the first place? That’s a good question, without a simple answer.

What gives me hope and courage is knowing that Jesus does not need to prevent every moment of darkness. I believe he allows them so that he can prove to us, who so often forget, that he is stronger than the darkness. He

will overcome this, and he invites us into the struggle so that we can share in the victory with him.

Which means that this is an opportunity for transformation, for growth, for getting outside of ourselves, and putting others first.

We need these opportunities in life because our fallen nature tends to put ourselves first. Yet, this is not what satisfies us. What satisfies us is giving ourselves away in love for another. So, while we may be tempted to look at how our own situations have devolved recently, what we may want to consider is how I can make someone else’s life better. Paradoxically, when I give myself away in love to them, I don’t lose anything at all. On the contrary, I am the one who gains; I find who I am truly meant to be.

Forever in Our Hearts:

Judy KoneffKlatt and Kristina Taylor The SJND community grieves the loss of two beloved faculty members Judy KoneffKlatt Mrs. Judy KonneffKlatt, or Mrs. KK, as many students affectionately called her, passed away unexpectedly on May 30, 2020. Judy was a dedicated teacher and activities director at SJND, as well as a proud mother to her four children Steven '97 (Dec.), Vanessa '99, Nick '02, and Sam '06. She committed her life to Catholic school education throughout the East Bay, serving several different schools, most recently St. Teresa School in Oakland.

Judy was part of our Pilot Family from 1992 to 2006, where she taught Spanish and directed and coordinated the student activities. She had the rare talent of bringing out the best in all her students, training and mentoring her student leaders to be creative, engaged, and present to the student body. Judy had a wonderful ability to excite and inspire the student body: whether it was informative and entertaining assemblies, competitive magazine drives, spirit week, regular student dances, or Culture Day with activities to honor different cultures represented in the student body. She and the student leadership worked 8 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

closely with the campus ministry program, playing an integral role in the creation of the Kairos senior-retreat program for seniors, which has become a SJND tradition and a memorable experience for graduating seniors.

A strong, caring, and compassionate person, Judy had a special presence.

She came to school every day filled with boundless energy that permeated everything she did in and out of the classroom. She was fiercely dedicated to SJND and the young

people to whom we ministered, and in turn, the SJND community loved her back. “Judy loved to travel and to share her love of exploration with others.

In my first year working at SJND (a job she actually told me about and recommended me for), she invited me to join her on a student trip to Spain. At the time I didn't even have a passport! She took me under her wing and showed me how to see the world. Together, during free time,

we wandered the streets popping into random places to sample tapas and drink cafe cortados. We found a random roller coaster on the side of a mountain. I was timid to trust its safety, but not Judy. We laughed as we held onto each other and rushed around the mountain without seatbelts.

Kristina Taylor Mrs. Kristina Taylor, formerly Ms. Stone, passed away on April 13, 2020 after a yearslong battle with cancer.

Kristina served the SJND community for nearly 20 years, during which she taught various science classes, including Biology, AP Biology, Honors

Chemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and AP Environmental Science, among other classes. Shortly after joining SJND, Kristina was named Science Department Chair, and later, STEM Chair. As Science Chair, she helped transform the SJND Science Department and served as a mentor to her fellow teachers. Kristina also spearheaded the annual Diocese of Oakland Science Fair, helping inspire a younger generation of scientists.

In 2012, Kristina helped launch SJND’s celebrated Biomedical Sciences program. She continued to play an integral role in the program over the last eight years, guiding students through the challenging curriculum and requirements. Many of Kristina’s students would go on to study health sciences at the university-level and pursue a career in the medical field.

Kristina was incredibly strong and joyful, with an undeniable zest for life.

She loved adventure and led numerous Academic Immersion Trips, guiding SJND students through unforgettable experiences in Thailand, Peru and the Galapagos Islands, to name just a few

destinations. Most importantly, Kristina was a devoted teacher, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend to many.

Kristina's family has established The Kristina Taylor Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biomedical Science to honor her memory and to award students who excel in SJND's Biomedical Science program. The annual award will be given to an exceptional student in SJND's Biomedical Science program in the form of tuition remission. Under the direction of Lauren Rosi, Director of Theater Programs at SJND, dozens of talented student performers treated audiences to a rollicking performance of Lucky Stiff, an offbeat, hilarious murder mystery farce based on the novel, The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo by Michael Butterworth.

Longtime Cross Country, Track & Field Coach Tony Fong Named NCS Honor Coach “I also try and balance sports with their education to help develop values and life skills that contribute to their success in the future, including in and out of college.”

Coach Fong has coached at SJND for over 20 years, leading SJND Cross Country to become one of the top programs in the state. Under his leadership, the Pilots have earned five state titles since 2012. Additionally, many of Coach Fong’s athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.

Congratulations to coach Tony Fong who was awarded the NCS Honor Coach distinction at the NCS Cross Country Meet of Champions on November 23, 2019. The Honor Coach award is the highest honor a coach can receive in our section and “represents the best of high school education and athletics,” per NCS.

“Cross country is a very demanding sport and I develop a training program that prepares each runner to take on the challenges of racing,” Coach Fong said about his coaching philosophy. “I also try and balance sports with their education to help develop values and life skills that contribute to their success in the future, including in and out of college.”

Cross Country Team Qualifies for State Meet The SJND Men’s Cross Country team had a standout season, placing third at the NCS Meet of Champions to qualify for the CIF State Championships. Congratulations also to Aila Owens '21 who qualified as an individual and represented the Lady Pilots at the State Championships.

Women’s Basketball Team Has History-Making Season Congratulations to our Varsity Women's Basketball team who made history with their 67-58 victory over Cardinal Newman to capture the first-ever North Coast Section Open Division title. Following a hard-fought win over Clovis West of Fresno in the NorCal Open Division Playoffs, the Pilots (24-8) finished the season as 2020 CIF Open Division Semifinalists after falling to Archbishop Mitty in the NorCal Championship.

Pilots Hire Former WNBA Player, Cal Bears Star to Lead Women’s Basketball Program SJND has hired former professional basketball player and Cal Golden Bears star, Oakland-native Alexis Gray-Lawson as Head Coach of the SJND Pilots Women’s Basketball program.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Gray-Lawson was a basketball standout at Oakland Technical High School where she led her team to two California state titles and earned MVP honors. Gray-Lawson continued her basketball career at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving recognitions including All-Pac-10 First Team in 2009 and 2010, and Pac-10 All-Defensive team in 2010, and earning a gold medal with Team USA at the 2009 World University Games. In 2010, she received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith award, which is presented by the WBCA annually

to "the nation's most outstanding NCAA Division I female basketball player who stands 5'8" tall or under.”

In 2010, Gray-Lawson entered the WNBA draft and was selected 30th overall by the Washington Mystics. She later signed with the Phoenix Mercury, and also went on to play professionally in Turkey and Israel.

“Alexis has an impressive track record as a player and most recently, as a high school coach at Como Park Senior High School in St. Paul, Minn. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experiences that will tremendously benefit our student-athletes both on and off the court. We are fortunate to have someone of her caliber return to the Bay Area to lead our program into the future,” said Carlos Arriaga, SJND Athletic Director.

Life

In March 2020, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School students were faced with a challenge most teenagers— and adults— wouldn’t expect to experience in their lifetime: adjusting to life in a global pandemic. Like students throughout the world, SJND Pilots were forced to accept a new reality, which included distancing from family and friends, sheltering in place, and transitioning to a new way of learning.

With co-curricular programs cancelled, classes moved online, and campus doors locked, “Pilot Life” as students knew it changed overnight. Here’s what life looked like for SJND students sheltered-in-place.

Teachers Going the Distance Not only did students have to adjust to a new way of learning, SJND teachers adjusted lesson plans and teaching styles in order to ensure a continuation of learning during the long-term dismissal.

Many teachers, including theater teacher Ms. Rosi and science teacher Ms. Yoon, took advantage of our new, digital-connectedness to arrange video conferences with industry professionals, some based on the other side of the country.

SJND Donates PPEs to Local Healthcare Workers Ms. Adam and Mr. McKee led efforts to donate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and other equipment to local healthcare workers on behalf of SJND. Mr. McKee took advantage of the new SJND IDEA Lab 3D printers to create masks and face shields, while Ms. Adam gathered materials from the science department for donation. Together, they donated over 1,500 gloves, nearly 100 pairs of goggles and safety glasses, eight gallons of hydrogen peroxide, Lysol wipes, and several adult and pediatric masks to local institutions and healthcare workers.

Honoring the Class of 2020 Although graduation events were altered due to the circumstances, that didn’t stop SJND from celebrating its spectacular seniors!

On May 30, SJND held a graduation car procession for the graduates and their families. For the first time in nearly three months, the stretch of Chestnut Street in Alameda between San Antonio and San Jose Avenues lit up in a sea of blue and orange as the SJND community eagerly awaited the Class of 2020. Seniors and their families— in cars decked out to the nines— followed a route through Alameda and concluded at 1011 Chestnut Street amid cheers from their teachers and coaches.

Athletics Goes Virtual Faculty and staff paid each senior a socially-distanced visit to hand-deliver their Class of 2020 yard signs.

Theater Students Give Zoom Performance There’s a first time for everything! On May 14, the SJND Theater Department gave their first-ever Zoom performance, with a reading of the original play, “Personification.” The one-act play was written by Ms. Gunn-Graffy, based on characters conceived and developed by Honors Musical Theater 3 students. Ms. Rosi directed the play, which was performed by Honors Theater: Play Production.

When athletic competitions were cancelled for the remainder of the school year, many teams transitioned to virtual group workouts and team meetings.

The JV Men’s Baseball Team, led by coach Michael Stehr, held virtual team meetings twice a week to stay connected.

“I am very proud of the work we were able to do despite the difficult circumstances,” he said.

SJND Alumni on the Frontlines of a Global Pandemic Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School is immensely grateful to all of the heroes amongst us, those selflessly serving as first responders and essential workers during this global crisis.

From caring for sick patients, to educating our children through distance learning, leading emergency operations, and keeping citizens informed and the supply chain moving, SJND Alumni are serving important roles on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this feature, we speak with a few of those individuals about how their jobs and daily lives have been affected by the virus, and why their drive to serve others hasn’t wavered.

Q: Much of life and work as we’ve known it has changed due to COVID-19. How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19? What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: We have never seen anything like 16 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

COVID-19 before, so that put our hospital on high alert since cases started to grow here in the United States. We did not want to become Italy. We did not want to become New York. Hospital policy changed to limit unwarranted exposure by stopping elective procedures/surgeries and even prohibiting patients’ loved ones and family members from visiting the hospital. Then, shelter-in-place became mandatory, which further lowered our patient census. For what it's worth, it is my belief this saved lives and allowed us to be better prepared for what we all felt was just the calm before the storm.

I took care of my first COVID patient in early March. Much has changed since then in regards to testing, protective personal equipment (PPE), and patient management. At one point, testing took almost one week to get results. Now, most can be resulted by the next day, and in some cases, even 20 minutes.

Abundant PPE remains a constant concern, but fortunately we did not have to resort to garbage bags. We have a better understanding of the

clinical course of COVID-19, so we know what to look for in making an initial diagnosis and even what to look out for should someone traject towards intensive care. Everything is fluid. This is a novel virus and disease. We have to keep up with the current research and literature knowing that what was true weeks ago might not be true today.

"...I have always felt that being a physician is a privilege. This has not changed....I am proud of what I do and I understand that I have a very special role in all of this. " One of the most striking challenges of COVID-19 is the impact of isolation.

It's hard enough to be hospitalized, but harder to go at it alone. Communication with patients, family and loved ones has become that much more key.

My normal day has two different flavors while in the hospital since it's divided into "admit days" where I admit patients from the emergency room to the hospital floors and start the initial care and workup for the patient. On those days, I wear my N95 throughout my shift since I spend the majority of my time in the emergency room. I'll take off my mask to eat and/ or chart. On my "rounding days," I am the attending physician for typically 10-15 patients where my responsibility is to continue the care you need and ultimately get you home safely. For my COVID patients, as long as they are stable, I reserve seeing them last as to limit any potential exposure. After

seeing all my patients, I then spend the rest of the day charting and updating families and loved ones. No matter my admit or rounding days, I change into hospital scrubs prior to my shift. I change out of those scrubs at the end of my shift. When I get home, I don't let my family come near me until I head straight to the shower.

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally?

A: I have been fortunate to have my parents be a source of child care for my three children. Since shelter-inplace, I have separated myself from seeing my parents and my extended family for the real risk of bringing the virus home despite taking all appropriate precautions. The guilt of passing on the virus to my parents or other family members via my children is something I don't think I can handle.

My mom has survived a ruptured brain aneurysm and even breast cancer.

She's told me herself she is not sure she can take a third insult.

Q: Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice, in one way or another?

A: Prior to COVID-19, I have always felt that being a physician is a privilege.

This has not changed. This is a novel disease I never imagined facing in my lifetime as a physician. But I am here for it. I am proud of what I do and I understand that I have a very special role in all of this.

Q: In your own words, what is something we can all do to lift each other up and support one another during this unprecedented time?

A: My profession asks that I be responsible for the health and safety of people I have never met before. You do not have to be a physician or healthcare provider to do the same. Be responsible for each other. Watch out for one another. And please, wear a mask.

Q: How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19?

What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: My job has completely changed due to COVID-19. We have had to go completely virtual and teach from our computers. Teaching seven and eight-year-olds on Zoom and Google Classroom is definitely not the ideal situation. At the elementary level, one-on-one interaction and support is a huge part of the learning process.

Students and teachers have lost this in a sense. I have been trying my best as a teacher to try and create as much of a normal classroom experience as possible.

A normal day now consists of recording lessons on my computer and posting them to Google Classroom for my students to view. My students have daily schedules that mimic what we did in the classroom that they follow. I meet with students individually to give

them one-on-one support with their academics or in small groups to learn new topics.

Just like in the classroom, I provide fun projects for students to complete.

For example, writing their own fiction books and kitchen science experiments. It also is important to provide social Zoom calls and fun opportunities for students to interact with their peers.

The students, especially at the elementary level, have struggled with distance learning.

They miss their friends and their teachers and they need time just to be together. My motto in my classroom is that “Learning is an Adventure,” and adventures should be fun. I have been trying my best to keep the fun and the joy alive in my virtual classroom as well.

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally?

A: I think like many others, it has definitely impacted my mental and emotional health. As a second grade teacher, so much of my life involved Summer 2020 | Update 17

I felt as though I was grieving the loss of my school year and the time with my students, which weighed heavily on my heart. In addition, not being around my family and friends was very hard. I had to take active steps to take care of myself and find the joy in the simple things like Zoom calls, walking my dog, and spending time with my fiancé. I was very lucky to not be financially impacted by the pandemic, as so many others were, and to be able to continue to do what I love even though it was in a different format. I am also blessed with an amazing support system that helped me stay positive throughout this time.

Q: Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice?

A: This crisis has definitely solidified my choice of becoming an educator. I know without a shadow of doubt that being a teacher is what I was meant to do. I did not realize just how much I loved it and how important it was until it was gone in some sense. Many people are now realizing the important job that schools and teachers play.

Not only are we educating students on how to read and write, but we are helping form their social and emotional development, as well as helping teach them how to be kind and loving members of this world. It also has become very clear how much value there is in having students in a classroom learning together. I love being a teacher and I could not imagine myself doing anything else.

Q: How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19?

What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: In late February, I was asked by my boss and friend, Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti to lead the City's day-to-day operations in response to COVID-19. It was an all-consuming mission, literally around the clock, seven days a week. It changed everything about what was "normal" in my life and routine, as it did for everyone on the planet. Rather than City Hall, I began working out of the City's Emergency Operations Center where we coordinated the launch of 10 free COVID test sites for the public; opened COVID shelters in recreation centers for people experiencing homelessness; overhauled the Los Angeles Convention Center into a massive overflow hospital; and oversaw the difficult orders for businesses to shut down and for people to shelter at home. I believe these efforts and interventions save thousands of lives.

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally?

A: For me, it is more than my job, it's personal. My father contracted COVID-19 very early in the pandemic and was sick for about four weeks, including one trip to the ER. I want to do what I can to prevent that experience from happening to other families. Although he survived and is better, it was very scary, especially given that people were not allowed to visit their loved ones in the hospital at that time.

A: I operate well, professionally, during stress and crisis. I suspect that my two tours in Afghanistan as a military officer have given me the ability to remain calm under pressure and jump into the challenge of making hard decisions under extreme conditions. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else than in this role during the pandemic.

Q: In your own words, what is something we can all do to lift each other up and support one another during this unprecedented time?

A: Mental health is critical to our personal health and the health of our communities. Check on one another.

Emotions are high while we tackle three simultaneous global crises: racism, economic and public health.

At a time when we are told to avoid contact with one another, we need that contact more than ever. Express your love and show your support for every single person in your life who has some importance to you, and watch for signs of extreme trauma. You can help the healing and maybe save a life. Q: How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19?

What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: The day to day goal of my job has not changed. I need to have my newscast written and completed for 6:00 p.m. However, the circumstances of how I do that have completely changed. I am now working from home, producing a 6:00 p.m. newscast for FOX40 in Sacramento on a laptop.

All of our meetings are now conducted virtually. I also think our job as journalists has become more important during this pandemic. We went from airing normal newscasts with a variety of news, to every story being COVID19-related in a matter of days.

Q: Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice?

A: I love what I do, and I am very appreciative to still have a job as many others have lost theirs. I got into journalism because I like helping others and like keeping people informed. I take great pride in knowing my work is hopefully helping others stay safe.

Q: In your own words, what is something we can all do to lift each other up and support one another during this unprecedented time?

A: We have to understand we are all in this together. COVID-19 is impacting us all whether we have had the virus or not. I think the best way to support each other is to find ways to stay connected. Reach out to not just the family members and friends you always speak to, but others who you may not have spoken to in a while. You never know how much of an impact a random check-in can have on someone.

What does a normal day at work look like now?

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally?

A: Things have been stressful. It is my job to be informed, which means knowing everything there is to know about COVID-19, including death tolls and the strain the pandemic is having on our economy. As much as I would like to unplug and focus on other things, I can’t. I am also concerned for my wife who works in the medical field, and my two-year-old son who has been staying home with me as I work.

A: My job changed from one day to another. We were briefed by infectious disease [experts] that a new upcoming flu-like, respiratory virus was emerging rapidly in Wuhan, China and that the hospital was keeping a close eye on the disease. Within two weeks or so, we were full-blown quarantining patients left and right, and completely revamped our screening process.

up and wear N-95... it was frustrating.

Changes occurred every single day, revealing a new process, new flow to the screening process, and even reviewing what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was needed in case we needed to intubate a patient. A normal day in today’s age includes my coworkers and I wearing an N-95 particulate respirator pretty much for the entire shift, protecting ourselves from a disease that is easily transmissible. We have enough PPE, which puts me at ease, but that doesn’t mean we had it easy from the beginning! PPE is gold, and we are encouraged to “extend wear” masks which means that once you put your mask on, if you do not touch it, you can keep it on until you take it off, and once you do so, it’s time for a new mask.

Q: Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice?

A: Not at all, quite the contrary, as a matter of fact! During the shelter-inplace order, my hospital’s community gathered together and raised over $75,000 to feed different parts of the hospital for breakfast, lunch, and dinner... all while buying from local businesses to keep them afloat, a task that nobody has ever dealt with before.

Yes, people have died from COVID-19, but it’s not a death sentence if you contract it. Take your necessary precautions, and do the things you normally do in public at ease. I think it’s important during this time of such sorrow, and sadness, and uncertainty to take a second out of our day and to say a quick prayer.

Believing in God during this pandemic has gotten me through with my head up high knowing that at the end of the day, Jesus is there to protect me in my line of work, and that God knows everything. He hears our cries, and he hears our hearts. Let us all be at ease knowing that God is in control, always and forever. He has never, and will not ever forsake us, for He is good. Q: How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19?

What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: As the Director of External Affairs for the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management, my role during “normal times” is to educate and engage the media, elected officials and the general public on the city’s emergency preparedness programs and activities.

Since January 27, 2020, the day San Francisco activated our Emergency Operations Center (EOC), working with my colleagues to coordinate San Francisco’s response to this global pandemic has been my full-time job.

Specifically, I lead the Joint Information Center (JIC) which is part of San Francisco’s EOC. Our role is to develop and push out timely, accurate and accessible emergency information. At the peak of San Francisco’s response to COVID-19, the JIC facilitated daily press conferences, fielded a steady stream of inquiries from local, national and international media, and pushed out health and safety information in

A: The time away from my family and friends is what has impacted me the most. Sixty to seventy-hour weeks was the norm. Leaving the house before my five-year-old woke up and coming home when she was already asleep was my new reality. Not having the 50th anniversary celebration we planned for my parents was heartbreaking. But while I was physically and mentally exhausted, I could not help but feel inspired. My wife, Christine, kept our family strong and our daughter engaged, and coordinated care for our parents from afar— all while working from home. My siblings and cousins organized and looked out for all of the aunties and uncles who were isolated during shelter-in-place. In the EOC, I was surrounded by people who were just as tired and had similar circumstances, but continued to come to work every day to slow the spread of the virus and care for San Franciscans impacted by COVID-19.

Q: Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice?

A: I chose a career in public service because it gives me the opportunity to do something meaningful for my community. It is truly humbling to serve alongside people committed to making our city stronger. In response to COVID-19, my colleagues and I developed medical surge plans and testing sites, launched food programs for the city’s most vulnerable residents, kept the public informed, supported small businesses and set up shelters for people experiencing homelessness. I love my job and enjoy the people I work with.

Q: In your own words, what is something we can all do to lift each other up and support one another

A: As a community we are struggling with the weight of not only a global pandemic but the sins of generations of institutional racism. We face this on top of whatever personal struggles we may have. Q: How has your job and the work you do been impacted by COVID-19?

What does a normal day at work look like now?

A: I have a private practice in Manhattan, where I also teach at a psychoanalytic training institute. As the city began shutting down, I started seeing my patients remotely by video and teaching via Zoom. Working remotely, we lose the visceral quality of nonverbal and unconscious communication, and the emotional regulating power of physical presence is muted. My more vulnerable patients have struggled and there have been some crises to manage.

Fortunately, most of my patients are long-term, and having an established relationship helped with the transition.

They have also now all met my cats, who like to walk across the screen occasionally, and this has brought a new kind of intimacy.

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally? Has this crisis swayed how you feel about your career choice?

A: NYC has striking disparity in terms of wealth and access to resources. This is something I have never felt at ease with, having come from a working class background. The historical structures that perpetuate this divide are even more evident now, which is a good thing.

Many New Yorkers have lost jobs and businesses, others have had to work even harder. I feel grateful every day to still have the life and career I worked very hard to build. My first jobs were in public psychiatry and community mental health, which I found profoundly fulfilling.

I wish psychoanalytic treatment, with its commitment to truth, humanity and mutuality, was more widely available to those who are excluded from so many parts of society. Between the normalizing of remote therapy and the more humane pace of life, this pandemic has provided a portal to evolving the way I practice. I will be able to reach more people who feel forgotten.

I work from home for a few hours then come in. I know I’ve become a greater presence in the factory, which I think has helped keep us COVID-free. With 250 employees, not a bad record.

Q: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you personally?

A: There’s an emotional strain that can’t be denied. Work for the last three months has been unbelievably stressful. Keeping the factory running (we’ve had record orders) and keeping it safe takes its toll. I know that. So I have to remind myself to breathe and take a few moments to appreciate the someone may get COVID-19 working [at Emerald Packaging] haunts me.

Daniel, known as Danny to his family and friends, was generous, loyal and revered by many. Danny was a beloved leader and colleague at the San Francisco VA Health Care System for over 35 years, where he served as Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacist and Drug Information Coordinator before being promoted to the position of Associate Chief of Pharmacy in 2001.

Additionally, he was an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at UCSF and Adjunct Faculty at the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy. Danny was highly respected by pharmacists and physicians for his vast knowledge in the field of Infectious Diseases.

Following the death of his wife, Denise, a computer scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Danny, together with Denise’s brother Joe Cervelli Jr. ‘82,

established a scholarship fund to support SJND students who excel in mathematics. Over the years, the generosity of the Cervelli-Maddix family has benefited a number of talented SJND students by honoring their high school achievements in mathematics and inspiring them to continue their studies.

In honor of Danny, the family has renamed the scholarship in both Denise and Daniel Maddix’s name to be The Denise Cervelli Maddix and Daniel Maddix Math and Science Scholarship Fund.
