STALLIONS TO WATCH

#5 NICK MUCK begins his fourth year as a varsity player in 2012 playing in a total of 26 varsity games, a school record.

His varsity football career began as a freshman in 2009 where he saw enough action to earn a varsity letter. As a sophomore, he recorded 13 tackles while playing in each game. Last season, Nick started every game at inside linebacker for the Stallions where lead the team with 73 total tackles. He also earned 2nd Team All Sea View League honors and was named the outstanding skill player for the Stallions. Tonight, Nick’s will be playing in his 23rd consecutive game (also a school record) dating back Laguna Hills on November 13, 2009. Born in Pleasanton, California, Nick enjoys relaxing before games and feels his greatest asset to the team is his leadership of the defense on and off the field.

#20 KYLE MUCERINO returns as the leading receiver for the Stallions after an impressive summer playing on both sides of the ball. In 2011, he started at wide receiver in 8 games where caught 16 passes while scoring 2 touchdowns. Both touchdowns came against Trabuco Hills as he recorded 4 catches for 95 yards. His biggest game of the year came versus rival Capistrano Valley where he pulled in 7 receptions. However, an ankle injury slowed him down all year and he did not begin to get comfortable until later in the season. In 2012, he will be looked to on defense and special teams as well where he will play corner and return kicks. Born in Mission Viejo, Kyle has a younger brother, Matt, who also plays receiver for the Stallions.

#8 SCOTT HOOVER has had to overcome much adversity to return to the playing field in 2012. Just before the opening league game versus El Toro he suffered a fracture in is leg that ended his junior season. However, this did not slow him down and his preparation this past off-season has shown why he is considered a leader on both offense and defense. In the 6 games prior to his injury, he recorded 12 tackles while starting and safety. This year, Scott will likely see action at safety, corner, and wide receiver. At 6-2 and 180 pounds, he has the ability to out physical smaller defensive backs and the staff is hopeful that he and fellow senior Kyle Mucerino can anchor an explosive receiving corp. Born in Long Beach, Scott likes to listen to music before games and believes his knowledge of the game can provides an edge over his opponents.

GAME OVERVIEW

SAN JUAN HILLS – CANYON SERIES Today’s contest is the 1st meeting between the Stallions and the Comanches. It comes on a historic night as San Juan Hills hosts their first game in the on campus stadium. Entering its 4th full varsity season, the Stallions compete in the Sea View League while the Comanches compete in the Century League. Both are members of the CIF Southwest Division. Canyon head coach Brent McKee enters his 9th season as head coach with a 43-36 overall record. Under his leadership, the Comanches have qualified for the playoffs 5 times making it to the quarterfinals in 2008. Stallion head coach Aaron Flowers enters his 2nd season after a winless rookie season in 2011.

TODAY’S STORYLINES • San Juan Hills is 2-2 in their home openers since 2008.

• There is much anticipation for the Stallions after four years of playing its home games at Tesoro High School. Today will be the first in a long tradition of Stallion home games at “The Badlands.”

• Canyon quarterback Corey Elsasser and wide receiver Chris Prescott return after a challenging sophomore season. El sasser started in 10 games in 2011 throwing for 643 yards connecting with Prescott 15 times.

• The Stallions return 8 starters on a defensive unit that looks to improve dramatically after giving up a school record 433 points in 2011.

• Stallion defensive line coach Les Owens spent 24 years as a Comanche assistant from 1976 to 2000. He has not coached against them since the early 70’s while coaching at El Dorado.

• Statistically, San Juan Hills and Canyon are evenly matched based on last season. They both come off 0-10 seasons and were close in points for (SJH-93/CHS-50) and points against (SJH-433/CHS-416).

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2004-2006: Offensive Coordinator, Dana Hills As an assistant in the South Coast League under head coach Armando Gonzalez, Aaron helped lead the Dolphins to the CIF Playoffs in 2 out of the 3 seasons that he coached. During this time he also coached quarterbacks Grant Schwartz and Sean Schroeder who both went on to receive Division 1 scholarships.

2003: Offensive Coordinator, JSerra Aaron returned from Montana in early 2003 to start a career in high school education and coaching. He received his first opportunity at JSerra in the school’s first year of operation coaching the upstart Lions freshman squad.

1999-2002: Asst. Coach, Montana State University Aaron coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs while at Montana State. Under Aaron’s leadership running back Ryan Johnson became Montana State’s all-time leading rusher as the Bobcat offense consistently ranked in the top half of the Big Sky Conference in rushing and total offense. Aaron also coached All-America wide receiver Junior Adams who now coaches at Eastern Washington University.

1998: Asst. Coach, Cal State Northridge Aaron’s coaching career began as a Matador assistant where he tutored quarterback Marcus Brady. In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. He finished the year ranked #9 in the nation is passing efficiency and #13 in total offense.

1996-1997: Quarterback, Cal State Northridge As a Matador quarterback Aaron had a successful two-year career after transferring from LA Valley College. In his senior year he lead an offense that ranked #1 in the nation in passing yards and individually he finished as the statistical leader in total offense with 348 yards per game.

The Rough Riders When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898. That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important.

We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
