GAME OVERVIEW SAN JUAN HILLS—DOS PUEBLOS SERIES

The Stallions are 2-0 against the Chargers in a series that began in 2012. However, they have not played since 2013. The game in 2012 was tight until the 4th quarter as the Stallions escaped with a 27-14 victory.

The run game proved to be what carried the Stallions in this matchup as they rushed for 143 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Jacob Gibson took the first play of the game and ran for 66 yards to set up the first touchdown for the Stallions. He also completed 11 out of 13 passes for 99 yards. In the 3rd quarter, the Stallions broke the game open with some trickery on a double pass from Gibson to Kyle Mucerino who then threw to a 58 yard touchdown to Ilias Irby.

In 2013, the Stallions travelled to Goleta, California to take on the Charger on their home turf. While the Stallions outgained the Chargers by almost 200 yards, they struggle punching the ball in the endzone and needed a 4th quarter 20 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Gibson to receiver Matt Mucerino to seal the 26-23 victory. Gibson finished the game with 220 yards passing and runningback Brad Kremer led all rushers with 121 yards on 18 carries.

Last year, Dos Pueblos finished 1-3 in the Channel League and 3-7 overall. However, they return quarterback Kellen Roberts who finished the season with 2082 yards passing and 18 touchdown passes. Their leading receiver, Bryan Erwin also returns after catching 44 passes in 2015. While the Stallions return a host of players, they will need to replace quarterback Patrick O’Brien who holds 19 school records after leading the Stallions to an 8-3 record in his senior season. He is now attending the University of Nebraska on a full athletic scholarship.

TODAY’S STORYLINES • The Stallions are tough to beat at home and bring a record of 16-5 at the Badlands.

• The Stallions have two coaches who graduated from Dos Pueblos; Athletic Director, Armando Gonzalez and Freshman Coach and teacher, Juan Hernandez. They played football and baseball at Dos Pueblos in the early 90’s.

• Over the past four years, Aaron Flowers has lead the Stallions to a 29-15 record and won a league championship in 2013. They have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

• Senior wide receiver Jacob Huff already holds all the receiving records for the Stallions and has had an amazing career. In his senior season he will look to solidify himself as one of the greatest players to wear the Navy and Gold

STALLIONS TO WATCH #3 Brady Bjorkman

Position: WR/DB • Ht: 6-0 • Wt: 190 • Grd: 12 Bjorkman is entering his first full season as a varsity starter. Bjorkman will be playing both wide receiver and outside linebacker for the Stallions this season.

After transferring from JSerra before his junior season, Bjorkman split his time between wide receiver on varsity and quarterback on the junior varsity team. For the 2016 season, Bjorkman’s athleticism will allow him to contribute on both offense and defense for the Stallions.

His plans for the future include attending college and studying business.

#53 John Hernandez

Position: LB • Ht: 6-0 • Wt: 225 • Grd: 12 Hernandez, of Ladera Ranch, enters his third season playing varsity football for the Stallions. In his career as a Stallion, Hernandez has accumulated 38 total tackles, including 3 tackles for loss. He also has three quarterback hurries, one deflected pass and a fumble recovery.

As a junior, Hernandez played mostly inside linebacker, but may be asked to move to outside linebacker during the 2016 season, especially in passing situations.

#40 River Stewart

Position: DE/TE • Ht: 5-9 • Wt: 200 • Grd: 12 After playing outside linebacker for the Stallions as a junior, Stewart will now put his hand down as a defensive lineman for his senior season. His quickness off the ball and ability to rush the passer will be a huge benefit to the Stallion defense for the 2016 season. During his junior season, Stewart played in 9 games and compiled 15 solo tackles, 10 tackle assists, three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. He was forced to miss two games in the middle of the season due to an injury sustained while covering a kickoff against Los Alamitos High School.

In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important.

We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot

Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
