GAME OVERVIEW SAN JUAN HILLS – DANA HILLS SERIES

a win in the victory column and stand at 0-8.

Since the move to the South Coast League they have lost 17 out of 18 games and their 1 win in 2014 came by way of forfeit. This is the first year for the Dolphins under head coach Phil Skinner.

The Stallions enter tonight’s game 7-1 after a loss last week to Mission Viejo 48-20. It was not one of their best performances on the year as they struggled slow down the Diablo offense who jumped out to a 34-0 halftime lead. The Stallions hope to rebound tonight and improve to their South Coast League record to 2-1.

San Juan Hills and Dana Hills have been playing since 2011. Their first meeting was a lopsided victory in favor of the Dolphins 36-0. In 2012, again Dana Hills came out victorious, but things would change in 2013. Their meeting that year was for the Sea View League championship and the Stallions got off to a fast start jumping out to a 21-0 lead, but had to hang on for a 2821 win. Last year the result would again be in favor of the Stallions (35-21) as the teams met as members of the South Coast League. So far in 2015, the Dolphins have been unable to get TODAY’S STORYLINES

• With the los last week to Mission Viejo, the Stallion home record now stands at 15-5. Their losses have come to Laguna Hills (2012), Fullerton (2013), El Toro (2014), Tesoro (2014), and Mission Viejo (2015).

• Should the Stallions win tonight, they will be playing at Tesoro for 2nd place in the South Coast League next week, which will have major implications for the CIF playoffs.

• 1st year Dolphin head coach Phil Skinner worked as the offensive line coach for Stallion head coach Aaron Flowers when he was the Dana Hills offensive coordinator in 2006.

• Quarterback Patrick O’Brien and the Stallion offense had their lowest output on the year against Mission Viejo last week. They only managed 20 points 427 yards of total offense. They look take advantage of a Dolphin defense that has given up 53 points per game. In their two South Coast League losses, Dana Hills has give up 77 points to Mission Viejo and 68 points to Tesoro.

• Defensively, the Stallions had some major struggles in their loss to Mission Viejo giving up their highest point total on the year at 48. Senior linebacker Tim Newman is second on the team in tackles with 71 and is now the 2nd leading tackler in school history with 210 tackles (124 solo tackles). This year’s leading tackler is junior safety Cameron Buchanan who has 77.

STALLIONS TO WATCH Austin Gifford – Sophomore Linebacker

Austin will be entering his 3rd game as a varsity starter at linebacker. Earlier in the season, he played primarily on special teams, but due to injury he was thrust into a starting role on defense and hasn’t looked back. Currently, he is 8th on the team in tackles with 29 and has quickly learned the defensive scheme. Even though he is sophomore, he brings great focus and toughness and in a short period of time has earned the respect of his teammates.

Johnny Hernandez – Junior Linebacker

In only junior year, Johnny has become one of the more versatile players on the Stallion defense. He started the year playing inside linebacker, but more recently has made the switch to outside linebacker. He has recorded 25 tackles in his 8 starts this year. Johnny’s physical play and enthusiasm are what stand out as a player. He has also assumed a leadership role in mentoring teammate Austin Gifford during the course of the season.

River Stewart – Junior Linebacker

River started the first 5 games at outside linebacker before sustaining an injury that sidelined him for the Beckman game. However, he has worked his way back into the lineup and the Stallions will look again for him to contribute at linebacker tonight. Currently, has 13 tackles. River had an excellent off-season and his hard work put him in a position to play for the Stallions as a junior. He has become a student of the game and has grown tremendously as an athlete and young man.

Brady Bjorkman – Junior Quarterback/Runningback/ Wide Receiver/Defensive Back

This is Brady’s first year in the Stallion football program. He transferred in July to San Juan Hills from JSerra and because of his athleticism, he has become valuable as a utility player for the Stallions. At quarterback, he has rushed for 234 yards on 17 carries.

He also has 3 receptions while playing receiver. Tonight, you will likely see Brady in the Stallion backfield playing both quarterback and runningback. If that weren’t enough, he may have to play in the Stallion defensive backfield in place of Devin Wegis and Brock Cazel who are questionable for tonight’s game due to injury.

STALLIONS #21 Anthony Aguayo – Runningback/Defensive Back

#63 Nathan Carslon – Offensive Line

Anthony is in his 2nd year as a Varsity two-way player at Running back and Defensive back. He suffered a season ending knee injury last year, but that didn’t stop his motivation to come back and prove that he is a highly motivated energy force in the offensive backfield. He also is a workhorse on special teams. Anthony is a joy to work with because of his great attitude, attention to detail and constant desire to improve. We can always count on him to pound out those tough, hard to get yards as he never stops moving his feet.

A three-year letter winner…has started in 18 games as a Stallion offensive lineman…As a sophomore he saw time mostly as back-up honing his skills…This year, he has started in 8 games at left tackle and guard recording 41 tackles…He was also made a captain during this season.

Nathan plans on working in the aerospace industry and wants to attend Georgia Tech University… Born on April 17th, 1998 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, he is the vice-president of the STEM Club…

Enjoys spearfishing in his spare time.

Anthony has shown every day in practice that he is ready to give his all on every down. He brings it on every play opportunity with professionalism and composure without complaint. He knows that he can only control what he can control and that is to bring his best at every chance he gets.

That is one of the reasons why he is on the field in all three phases of the game. He brings commitment to whatever position is asked of him and that speaks volumes to the younger players.

#3 Garrett Cook – Outside Linebacker/Long Snapper

A two-year letter-winner… Garrett has started in 8 games as a senior as the long-snapper…in his career as a Stallion, he has also played receiver, safety, and outside linebacker.

#76 Jared Aviles – Offensive Line / Defensive Line

Garrett would like to attend BYU and plans to major in business…he currently holds a 3.2 GPA and enjoys skimboarding…born in Mission Viejo, CA on December 17, 1997, he loves pizza, and his favorite movie is Hot Rod. He loves to get pumped up in the weight room with his teammates before games and his most memorable sports moment is kicking in a CIF playoff game during his sophomore year…in 10 years he thinks he will be married and have 4 kids.

Jared is a 3 year Varsity letterman in the Stallion Program. A two year starter and a two-way player as a senior, Jared is an aggressive blocker on offense and a tenacious defender on defense. He has 30 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 5 QB pressures and a sack in 8 games this year.

Jared will continue his education at the junior college level next season. There has been some interest from colleges. His career interest is bodybuilding and he would like to attend Harvard…His hobbies include dancing, listening to music, and chasing girls…His favorite food is ice cream…favorite movie is Fight Club and sees himself as being president in 10 years.

#70 Tommy Gaisford – Offensive Line

A three-year letterwinner…has played offensive tackle for the Stallions during his varsity career…

Saw action primarily as a back-up during his junior season…As a senior, Tommy has started in 8 consecutive games and has played in 11at right tackle doing a great job.

#24 Lennon Barber – Defensive Back

A two-year letter-winner…Lennon has been a reserve receiver and defensive back for the Stallions…against Beckman he got his first start at corner and recorded 3 tackles…he also made 3 tackles last week on special teams versus Mission Viejo.

Tommy’s career interest is computer graphics design and hopes to attend California State University, San Marcos. Born January 15th, 1998 in Mission Viejo, California and is one of 3 siblings. He loves pizza and riding motorcylces…listening to Imagine Dragons…watching The A-Team…

His favorite teams are the New Orleans Saints and the USC Trojans…favorite teacher is Mr. Rodriguez…favorite song is Underdog…and his most memorable moment is making the cover of the SJHHS football program.

Lennon has been in the Stallion football program for 4 years playing mostly wide receiver. This past off-season he was moved to corner and he backs up both corner positions. For his unselfish sacrifice and perseverance over his career, he was nominated by the coaching staff to be the Brand Carrier and Honorary Captain for the Marina game in week 4. Lennon starts on special teams for the Stallions and has excelled over the course of this season.

#4 Miles Hooper – Outside Linebacker

#2 Tim Newman – Linebacker/ Defensive end/Tightend/Runnningback

A two-year letter-winner…Miles has played in 19 varsity games starting in 15 as a Stallion linebacker…in his junior year he recorded 35 tackles and this year tied for 4th on the team in tackles with 33. Miles has also contributed significantly on special team over his career and has even seen the field as a punter.

Tim is a three-year letter winner for the Stallions and has played in 31 varsity games, while starting in a school record 29 games in a row. He is highly versatile athlete on both sides of the ball. He has played inside and outside linebacker, defensive end, tight end, and runningback. Often he plays each of these positions in a SINGLE GAME. This year he has totaled 71 tackles, 3 sacks, and 8 tackles for loss. With 210 tackles in his career, he has moved to 2nd on the all-time tackle list. He was named to the 2nd Team All Sea View League Team as a sophomore and 1st Team All South Coast League Team as a junior. He is a team captain and has been consistent leader both on and off the field.

Miles would like to attend UCLA and is interested in medicine or becoming a firefighter… he holds a 3.1 GPA and enjoys surfing and any adventure…born in Laguna Beach, CA on June 20, 1998, he believes his best asset to the team is keeping his focus.

He was born in New York on Sept. 27th, 1997. His favorite moment at San Juan occurred when the fans stormed the field following the winning of a league championship against Dana Hills two years ago. His favorite teachers are Mr. Snedecker and Mr. Spiers and his favorite movie is "Interstellar." Tim is a member of the National Honor Society and hopes to study business in college and continue his football-playing career.

# 64 Greg Jaramillo – Defensive Lineman

Greg is a 3 year letterman having played in 21 games. This season he has 8 tackles, playing in a backup roll. Greg is always encouraging his teammates and helps the younger players with their assignments.

#12 Patrick O’Brien - Quarterback

Greg wants to become a commercial airline pilot in the future. Born in San Clemente in 1997, he enjoys Supertramp and Pink Floyd, his favorite movie is the Avengers and is the resident authority on McDonalds, where he is employed in the off-season as a shift manager. He is a Seattle Seahawk fan and cheers for USC on the college level.

A three-year letter-winner…Patrick has played in 31 games as a Stallion including 19 varsity starts…played linebacker and was the back-up QB his sophomore year before moving into starting role for his junior season…Patrick was a member of this year’s “The Opening” class sponsored by Nike…Patrick has re-written the Stallion record books throwing for 4,320 yards and 35 TD’s as a Stallion…during his senior campaign, so far Patrick has completed 78% of his passes for 2,203 yards and 23 TD’s while also rushing for 530 yards and 5 TD’s…Patrick is a member of the team’s Leadership Council and is a team captain for his senior season.

#74 Ryan Miltenberger - Offensive Line

A two-year letterwinner…has played defensive and offensive line for the Stallions during his varsity career…Saw action primarily on defense during his junior year…As a senior, Ryan has started in 3 games at tackle and guard…He has played in 14 games over his career and his most memorable moment is beating El Toro for the first time in school’s history.

Patrick will attend the University of Nebraska on an athletic scholarship where he plans to major in business…Born in Newport Beach, CA on July 18, 1997 he says his favorite food is sushi and his favorite song is Big Rings…as a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, Patrick says his dream is to be playing in the NFL in 10 years…Patrick has earned a 3.6 GPA while at San Juan Hills…Patrick would like to thank his parents for supporting him throughout the years.

Ryan’s career interest is engineering and has been accepted at Boise State University. Born February, 2nd, 1998 in Laguna Hills, California. He loves steak…watching The Dark Knight…His favorite teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Boise State Broncos…likes to play and watch hockey.

#77 Zac Oblea – Offensive Line

A three-year letter winner…has started in 18 games and played in 25 as a Stallion offensive and defensive lineman…As a junior he saw time mostly on offensive and defensive line…This year, he started in 4 games at right guard before breaking his leg against Los Alamitos…He has been a leader both on and off

# 52 Guillermo Mingramm – Defensive Lineman

Guillermo is a 2 year letterman, playing in 10 games. A starter on the Defensive Line, Guillermo has 22 tackles, 2 for a loss this season. A part time player, as a junior, he broke his ankle while intercepting a pass in the Dana Hills Game.

Guillermo was born in Argentina, wants to attend UCLA and is interested in becoming an orthopedic Surgeon. Most people he says do realize he is faster than he looks. An Oregon Duck and Dallas Cowboys fan, He also is interested in sky diving.

Mr. Rodriguez is his favorite teacher.

Zac plans on being a police officer wants to attend Oregon State or San Diego State University…

Born on December 19th, 1997 in Laguna Hills, he loves reading and playing basketball…His favorite song is Afternoon Delight… His favorite teams are the UCLA Bruins and Jacksonville Jaguars… and favorite movie is The Waterboy.

STALLIONS #26 Peter Prescott – Defensive Back

Hernandez is his favorite teacher. He was born in Mission Viejo in 1997, is undecided as to which college he will attend, and likes hanging out and playing XBox. The Lakers and Ohio State are his favorite teams, Drake is his favorite musical artist, and most people don’t know he can sing.

A two-year letter-winner…Peter has played in 19 varsity games, starting in 8 of hem at corner…in his junior year, he primarily contributed on special teams and recorded 4 tackles…this year, he has 18 tackles, 6 pass breakups and recorded his first interception in last week’s game against Mission Viejo…Peter was honored as the “Brand Carrier” against Los Alamitos.

# 50 Tommy Tandle – Defensive Lineman

Tommy is a first year player on the Varsity. He played in his freshmen year. He has played in 8 games this year as a contributing member on special teams and a role player as a defensive lineman. Tommy has 6 tackles on the season and a quarterback pressure.

Peter is would like to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and wants to be a financial engineer…born in Laguna Hills, CA on August 5, 1997, his pre-game ritual is to talk to Griffin Snaza, his favorite music artist is Phil Collins, his favorite song is “In the Air Tonight,” his favorite teacher is Mr. Serio, and he is a Cal Bears fan…like his teammate Griffin Snaza, his most memorable sports moment is beating El Toro this year 40-36.

Tommy was born in Mission Viejo in 1998. His career interest is to become a fireman. He enjoys listening to music. The Patriots are his favorite Pro Football team, likes spaghetti, and his favorite movie is Lone Survivor.

#61 Taylor Scott – Offensive Line

A two-year letterwinner…has played offensive line for the Stallions during his varsity career…

Saw action primarily as a back-up during his junior year while also suffering an injury that limited his action…As a senior, Taylor broke his collar bone again and is out for the whole year…He has played in 10 games during his career at SJHHS. Taylor’s career interest is business management and will be attending Saddleback College in the fall.

Born December 7th, 1997 in Mission Viejo, California. He loves paintballing and playing XBox…and his most memorable moment is beating El Toro for the first time in school history.

#84 Harrison Van Galder – Wide Receiver

A two year varsity letter winner... has played in 16 games as a stallion wide receiver. As a junior, Harrison saw time mostly on special teams and JV football games. This year he has started in 8 games recording 12 catches for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was also a brand carrier against Canyon High School.

Harrison was born January 30,1998 in Long Beach. He plans on attending Yale University and majoring in Chemical Engineering. In his free time, Harrison likes reading and listening to classical music. His favorite musical artist is Beethoven, his favorite NFL team is the Buffalo Bills, and his favorite college team is UCLA. He is also an honor roll student and participates in the STEM club at San Juan Hills. His favorite teacher is Ms. Oldroyd.

#43 Griffin Snaza – Defensive Back

A three-year letter-winner…Griffin has started in 19 varsity games as a Stallion defensive back primarily at safety…in his junior year as a starter, he recorded 75 tackles and 5 pass breakups…this year, he is 3rd on the team in tackles with 35…in his career, he has 114 tackles and 10 pass breakups…

Griffin was honored as the “Brand Carrier” against Mission Viejo.

#33 Devin Wegis – Running Back/Defensive Back

Devin has played in 24 games as a Varsity Stallion Running back and Defensive back. This season he has managed to run the ball for an average of 7.1 yards per carry, caught 2 TD passes, grabbed 3 interceptions, recorded 30 tackles and dove for 1 blocked field goal. Devin’s down hill approach to running along with his balance to cut at the right time has been pivotal to his success.

Griffin is undecided as to what he will do after high school…he currently holds a 3.9 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society…born in San Diego, CA on December 12, 1997, he loves to snowboard, his favorite movie is Dark Night, his is an avid Steeler fan, and his favorite teacher is Mr. Baker…his most memorable sports moment is beating El Toro this year 40-36.

# 42 Eman Talle – Defensive Lineman

Devin has future plans on becoming a firefighter, which fits him well as he has always shown to lend a helpful hand as a teammate. A quiet leader by example with great focus is certainly one of his strengths. Born on August 8th, 1997 in Ridgecrest, he says he enjoys hanging with friends at the beach, eating BBQ chicken pizza and listening to Kid Cudi. His most memorable football moment was defeating Dana Hills in 2013 for the league title. His favorite teams are the LA Clippers and the San Francisco 49ers.

Eman is in his first year of football at San Juan Hills. He is a starter on the Defensive line, has played in 8 games with 10 tackles and 2 quarterback pressures. Eman is also a varsity letterman is basketball at San Juan Hills where he is known for his tenacious, “in your face” defense.

Eman wants to get involved Sports Medicine, eventually be in charge of a program at the college or professional team. He has a 3.7 GPA and Mr.

Aaron coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs while at Montana State. Under Aaron’s leadership running back Ryan Johnson became Montana State’s all-time leading rusher as the Bobcat offense consistently ranked in the top half of the Big Sky Conference in rushing and total offense. Aaron also coached All-America wide receiver Junior Adams who now coaches at Eastern Washington University.

Aaron’s coaching career began as a Matador assistant where he tutored quarterback Marcus Brady. In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. He finished the year ranked #9 in the nation is passing efficiency and #13 in total offense.

1996-1997: Quarterback, Cal State Northridge

As a Matador quarterback Aaron had a successful two-year career after transferring from LA Valley College. In his senior year he lead an offense that ranked #1 in the nation in passing yards and individually he finished as the statistical leader in total offense with 348 yards per game.

When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important.

We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot

Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
