Keeping In Touch April 2022
Welcome to another bumper edition of KIT. April has been another month filled with plenty of activity. We celebrated Easter in a variety of ways, there were Easter reflections placed of patient meal trays, a lovely display was created by the Pastoral Care Team in the foyer and there were lots of Easter eggs and hot cross buns delivered to all departments in the week leading into Easter. Our online Patient Admission Portal went live, allowing patients to submit their hospital admission and health information into a digital portal and reducing the need for paperwork to be posted or dropped off to the hospital. There is 7 day a week support for patients and their families who may need support with using the portal. Thanks to the team behind the scenes who have been working tirelessly to ensure the implementation is a success and enhances our patients and VMO’s experience with our hospital. The footy tipping competition ramped up and has 92 tipsters participating with a number of people jostling each week for the top position. The weekly prizes attest to the fact you don’t have to be at the top of the ladder to be a winner. This week’s lucky winner was the team from Engineering. Prizes have included $25 Café Costa vouchers. We welcomed a bumper number of new caregivers and were lucky enough to be able to host our hospital orientation face to face. We look forward to featuring them in the next KIT so you can see the departments they have been recruited to work in and hear how their first few weeks have been. Have a lovely weekend!

Farewell Jessie!
My Admissions Patient Portal - now open!
Jessie came to SJGGH a year after her graduate year at the age of 21. She initially worked on the “old” 2 North, looking after Orthopaedic, Urology, Plastics, Vascular and ENT patients - she was a keen and enthusiastic nurse and was always up for fun often referred to “as the life of a party”.
Geelong patients will now be presented with the new My Admissions patient portal link to enter their admission registration and health questionnaire details, replacing paper forms that we have been using.
Her passion for Orthopaedics saw her transition into the Orthopaedic Care Coordinator role. Jessie has made a huge contribution to our Orthopaedic patients, VMO’s and 2 East. After 17 years Jessie decided a change was needed and she has taken on a similar role at UGH, although focussing mainly on Urology.
The new My Admission portal has been successfully implemented at Berwick and given that every hospital’s admission process is different, we encourage all caregivers to support the Admissions and Preadmission teams as we learn to navigate this new forum in providing better and more convenient services to our patients and their families.
We will miss Jessie and thank her for the contribution she has made.

ANZAC Day 2022 Celebrated annually on April 25, ANZAC Day is one of our nation’s most important days on every Australian’s calendars. This day marks the first major military battle fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I, and a day for us to commemorate our heroes. Don’t miss the display on our digital screens near reception. Patients will be treated with an ANZAC biscuit at breakfast along with a lovely card. Caregivers will be able to purchase biscuits from Cafe Costa throughout next week. There will also be a display at the Wexford Art Gallery on Level 2. A recent St John of God Geelong Rehabilitation patient and former soldier Gordon Traill has offered to display a series of his photography for our patients and caregivers to view and enjoy. Gordon has embraced his experience in service to pursue a passion of photography and changed his focus to tell stories of fellow veterans through images. Gordon has also published a book ‘Unconquered Our Wounded Warriors’ which is available for all caregivers to browse through at the Wexford Centre reception.

I was admitted for an overnighter for Arthroscopy under the management of Mr David Bowyer. What a great orthopaedic surgeon and generally top man. The nurses, anaesthetist, physio and all the staff were very caring and easy to get along with. Issuing pain relief medication was the best service received for a long time. Much more friendly and professional than some Epworth Hospital staff in Waurn Ponds. Special thanks to Manpreet, Deeksha and Jess. Fantastic nurses. Cheers. Keep up great caring work!
What our patients had to say about us this week... ED
Patient feedback Very caring and clear information provided. I felt at ease throughout my time there. Although the ED was busy the doctor took the time to talk to me and examine me with care. Overall excellent service and medical care by all the staff.
Surgery Centre Patient feedback
Lovely nursing staff, they made me feel very comfortable in their care. The facilities were lovely and clean. Very comfy armchair in the admissions waiting area while I was waiting to go through to theatre. Not the usual hustle and bustle of other hospital wards. Very friendly nursing staff including the anaesthetist and surgeon. Hopefully I don’t have to return, but if I do, I’d be happy to visit SJOG specialist suites again.
