OF SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE
From the time the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Portland, Maine, in 1873, they dreamed of applying the educational goals of Sister Catherine McAuley, who founded their order in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. After working toward this goal, the Portland Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas founded Saint Joseph’s College in 1912 on the grounds of the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse in the Deering district of Portland. It was chartered by the Maine Legislature in 1915. In 1949, the name of the College was changed, briefly, from Saint Joseph’s College to The College of Our Lady of Mercy. When the Sisters purchased the Verrill Estate and moved the College to Standish in 1956, they reinstated the original name of Saint Joseph’s. Less than fifteen years later, in 1970, Saint Joseph’s became a co-educational institution. Then, in 1976, the College became a pioneer in distance education programs. With more than a century of history, Saint Joseph’s College remains as Maine’s Catholic, liberal arts college, situated on the 474-acre campus on the shore of Sebago Lake in Standish, Maine, where students and staff enjoy views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for men and women of all faiths and ages through campus and online educational programming.

Honorary Degree Recipients Sister Karen Schneider, RSM, MD, MPH, Pediatrician and Tropical Medicine Clinician Sister Karen Schneider is a pediatrician and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where she has been recognized for her international medical work in the service of children. Sister Karen coordinates the Pediatric Tropical Medicine elective and has completed more than 80 medical mission trips while supervising clinical experiences for residents in several countries including: Haiti, Guyana, Nigeria, and Kenya. She has provided medical care and supplies during a malaria epidemic and following natural disasters. Sister Karen earned her MD from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She completed a pediatric residency at Yale Children’s Hospital and a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins. She also earned an MPH at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Sister Karen has received numerous honorary degrees and recognitions for her service. A resident of Silver Spring, Maryland (originally from Long Island, New York), she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1983 and in 2005 was presented with the Cunningham Award, conferred annually to a Sister who works to foster social equality.

The author of Life’s Bulldozer Moments: How Adversity Leads to Success in Life and Business (Hamilton Press), Tramuto has been recognized as an innovator and industry leader with more than 35 years of healthcare experience and a deep commitment to global healthcare access, patient outcomes, and digital solutions. In 2011, Tramuto founded Health eVillages, a nonprofit organization that provides state-ofthe-art mobile health technology in the most challenging clinical environments. He also serves as the chairman and founder of the Tramuto Foundation, an international nonprofit foundation that has supported hundreds of organizations–including Saint Joseph’s College–whose goal is to make the world a more just and fair place. Tramuto holds honorary doctorates from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Thomas Jefferson University, and Lasell College and has received numerous awards–including the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award for his commitment to healthcare innovation and healthcare access for all.
