History of Saint Joseph’s College Saint Joseph’s was founded by the Portland Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1912 and chartered by the Maine Legislature in 1915. Today, it is Maine’s only Catholic college. Saint Joseph’s grants degrees in fulfillment of the educational ideals of the Sisters of Mercy, founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland in 1831.

From the time the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Portland in 1873, they dreamed of establishing a college in the area—and worked toward it. From 1912 to 1956, the College was located on the grounds of the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse in the Deering district of Portland. In 1949, the name of the College was changed from Saint Joseph’s to The College of Our Lady of Mercy, but with the change of site to Standish in 1956, the original name of Saint Joseph’s was reinstated.

In 1970, Saint Joseph’s became a co-educational institution. The College began offering distance education programs in 1976. Today, Saint Joseph’s College provides certificates as well as undergraduate and advanced degrees for working adults through an online learning program that operates in collaboration with the College’s Sebago Lake campus.

With more than 100 years as a foundation, Saint Joseph’s College is determined to meet today and tomorrow’s opportunities for service to the local, state, national, and global communities.

PRESIDENT’S INVESTMENT CLUB Saint Joseph’s is proud to introduce The President’s Investment Club. When you give $10,000 or more, you are invited to join this select group. As a member of The President’s Investment Club, you will receive invitations to special events, obtain regularly scheduled updates from the President, and be recognized as a key contributor to Saint Joseph’s College. When you give, you can trust us to deliver on the promise we make to you. Whether it be scholarships, capital campaigns, general operating funds, or athletics, we can connect with your passion to ensure your legacy lives on at Saint Joseph’s.

How do I join the club?

All you need to do in order to join the President’s Investment Club is to contact the representatives listed on the last page of this guide. We will communicate with you throughout the process and work to align your gift with your passion.

BEQUEST Choosing to make a gift in your will is one of the easiest ways to leave a legacy at Saint Joseph’s College. When you create your will, or if you have one, we ask that you include Saint Joseph’s as a beneficiary. Your bequest to the College can include personal property, real estate, securities, insurance policies, or retirement plan assets.

Why make a bequest?

Not only will you be helping to change lives at Saint Joseph’s College, you will receive an estate tax charitable deduction. Tax deductions can help your family by relieving the weight of estate taxes.

How do I make a bequest?

The act of making a bequest is really quite simple. We recommend talking with your advisor, who can help you write Saint Joseph’s College into your will using specific language that outlines what you would like to leave. Any property that passes through a beneficiary designation can easily be given, by stating Saint Joseph’s College as the beneficiary. GIFT ANNUITY If you are not familiar with the term “gift annuity” it falls under the classification of planned giving. It involves a contract between you and Saint Joseph’s College. With a gift annuity, you will transfer cash or property to the College in exchange for a partial tax deduction and a lifetime stream of annual income from Saint Joseph’s.

Why make a gift annuity?

A gift annuity is an excellent option if you would like to secure your financial stability, while giving to Saint Joseph’s in a meaningful way. Annuities are principally appealing if you would like to receive income from assets that have gained value, like stocks. The gift annuity will provide supplemental income payments for your lifetime and the lifetime of your spouse. You will receive significant tax breaks at the time of your gift and every year subsequently.

Finally, you will be leaving a life changing legacy at Saint Joseph’s.

How do I make a gift annuity?

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP An endowed scholarship provides a permanent asset to Saint Joseph’s College from which students are supported. The gifted principal remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year.

When you choose to give toward an endowed scholarship, you help Saint Joseph’s grow in a strategic way, while offering students the opportunity to receive scholarships. Many times, the scholarships offered at Saint Joseph’s are the enabling factor in allowing students to attend the College. When you choose to give to the endowment, you are choosing to change the lives of the future generation.

How do I give toward the endowment?

If you are interested in giving toward the endowment, please contact our Planned Giving and Major Gifts Officer. We will personally help guide you through the process from start to finish. All contact information can be found on the last page of this guide.

IRA ROLLOVER If you are age 70 ½ or older, an IRA rollover is a simple way to make a gift to Saint Joseph’s, while receiving tax benefits. You are able to make a gift up to $100,000 from an IRA each year.

Why make a gift using an IRA rollover?

This is a great option to help offset taxes because it lowers your taxable income. You are able to transfer your required minimum distribution annually to Saint Joseph’s without recognizing the distribution as income. The lower income may even lower taxes on social security. This option may be good for you if you do not desire to make a cash donation, but still want to significantly help Saint Joseph’s College.

How do I make a gift using an IRA rollover?

In order to make this type of gift, you will need to contact your IRA custodian to make an IRA rollover to Saint Joseph’s College. When you set this up, please contact our Planned Giving and Major Gifts Officer. All contact information can be found on the last page of this guide.
