ANNUAL R E P O RT

Board of Trustees

From the President Dear Alumni and Friends, This Annual Report of Giving for fiscal year 2013–2014 is a testament to the generosity of the nearly 1,500 alumni, friends, businesses and foundations who supported the College during that period. The stories included in this edition tell something of the vibrancy that is made possible by these gifts, whether the gifts supported special projects to place new students on the path to success, or were used in support of our beautiful campus to provide a special summer camp experience to children who otherwise would have none, or created endowed scholarship funds that forever will honor a deceased loved one while assisting students each year for generations to come. Each gift touches lives—today and tomorrow. Each gift helps us sustain the promise that is Saint Joseph’s College. Thank you on behalf of today’s students and all the students of all ages, faiths, and nationalities who will come to our College because of their love for learning. Your gift helps make that possible. Sincerely yours,

James S. Dlugos, Ph.D. President 1

Camp Connections Compassion, community, and faith— these three Saint Joseph’s College core values were no doubt at the forefront of the mind of Sister Kathleen Sullivan, RSM, VP & chief sponsorship and mission integration officer, in 2014 when she thought to extend the College’s preexisting children’s summer

Using a generous grant from the Ministry Fund of the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Region, as well as local foundation funding, Camp Connections was formed in 2014 for children whose families have immigrated to the U.S. and lack the resources to send their kids to camp for summer vacation. “Our goal,” says Sister Kathleen, “was for children to have a camp experience that involved games, sports, swimming, and spending time at the College’s farm.” In addition, Sister Dale Jarvis, RSM, a former trustee of the College, worked with the campers daily to provide a spiritual component that included opportunities for prayer and reading books about respecting the diversity of others.

On the Right Path Ashley Brown ’10, a corporate talent programs coordinator at Unum, is just one of the Saint Joseph’s alumni who donated their time over the summer to support the College’s Paths to Success program. Started in 2013, Paths to Success is an intensive three-week summer course that helps incoming freshmen students in the transition to college life. “It’s been a great experience,” says Brown. “Without guidance, navigating the college experience and career planning can be daunting. The mentorship relationship provides personal growth while preparing the students to become strong candidates for careers at local companies like Unum.” Over the past two years, financial support from Finance Authority of Maine (through its College Access Challenge program) and other Maine foundations has allowed 18 students to attend Paths to Success and receive the tools necessary to jumpstart their college careers. These students gain confidence in the classroom by completing a course requirement and a lesson in social anxieties through peer mentorships with 5

upperclass students, including fun outings that encourage bonding with their fellow first-year students. But it is the career-focused activities that make the biggest impact. During the 2014 program in August, with the help of Brown and fellow staff member Meloney Simpson Santeusani ’09, ’14, students were paired with their own Unum Alumni Mentor. Alumni Mentors not only majored in management or marketing at Saint Joseph’s but also in English, education, biology, and philosophy. Through these relationships, coupled with field trips to Unum and other Maine employers like Mercy Hospital, the Portland Seadogs, and Residential Resources of Maine, incoming freshmen witnessed where a liberal arts degree can take them: anywhere! “The mentoring assistance offered by Saint Joseph’s alumni at Unum coincides nicely with our rejuvenated Alumni Board and Alumni Association,” says Board president Ellis Baum ’98. “One of the most important things that we can do as alumni is to participate in and assure the success of Saint Joseph’s College students.”

Saint Joseph’s College 2014 Annual Report • 8

The Economics of an Academic Engine As Saint Joseph’s College buys products from vendors to serve its constituents, pays its employees, attracts tourists to Maine for College events and programs, and sends new graduates into the workforce, operational and investment activities like these impact Maine’s economy—to the tune of $75 million in 2013. To better understand how Saint Joseph’s College helps to fuel Maine’s economy, the College enlisted the analytical services of Planning Decision Inc. of South Portland, Maine. Their report, released on August 8, 2014, provided an update of economic study assessments first presented in the firm’s original 2008 study.

•

While sizeable numbers, these figures alone do not tell the whole story of Saint Joseph’s College’s impact on Maine’s economy. In fact, not all of the College’s impact is commercial. There are also the less quantifiable but equally important benefits of programmatic outreach to consider. For example, in 2013 alone: •

821 Sebago Lake campus students engaged local businesses, organizations, and municipalities through community-based learning opportunities;

•

Pearson’s Town Farm, the farm operated by the College and run with the help of student, faculty, and staff volunteers, harvested farm crops used in the College’s dining hall and Catherine’s Cupboard Food Pantry; and

Among the findings of the 2014 study were: •

•

9

The $18.4 million non-payroll operating expenses and $1.4 million capital investments in building and grounds spent in 2013 flowed to 91 vendors located in 22 Maine cities and towns; Saint Joseph’s College provided 744 full- and part-time jobs for Maine workers residing in 199 municipalities across the state in 2013, designating the College as the largest employer in the town of Standish and the 19th largest employer in Cumberland County; and

Indirect spending on goods and services like gas, groceries, car repair, and dining in local restaurants by the 562 students from Maine and 297 students from outside Maine added an estimated $2.2 million in sales for Maine businesses.

•

Catherine’s Cupboard, located at the Standish Town Hall, provided food and other programming to residents in Cumberland County and parts of York County.

While the operational monies spent by the College oversight of these programs are reflected in the previously provided figures, local communities certainly benefitted from such activities in many other ways. But, in keeping with the original 2008 study, the College’s most notable contribution to our economy is our human capital—the educated, compassionate, and talented human beings who go on to build careers in Maine and around the world. In 2014, 3,565 Saint Joseph’s graduates were living in Maine. These individuals and future graduates go forth with the knowledge and the values they gained from Saint Joseph’s College to contribute to the workforce and to their communities in many more ways. For that benefit alone, Saint Joseph’s College’s impact is truly immeasurable.

The College’s most notable contribution to our economy is our human capital— educated, compassionate, and talented human beings.

Community Strong Sometimes it takes a village to create an endowed scholarship fund. That is what Laurie and Gary Rairdon learned when hundreds of people showed their support after the tragic death of their son, Matthew, who graduated with a nursing degree in 2013 from the College. It all started with a website Gary and Laurie named “Westbrook Strong” to spread the word about the scholarship they wanted to start in Matt’s name for a deserving nursing student at Saint Joseph’s. Westbrook Strong T-shirts were sold. Donations flowed in. The College helped promote the cause through 11

its online communications. By early spring, over $18,000 had been raised toward the $25,000 goal, the amount needed to endow a scholarship at the College. When the Rairdons and their friends decided to launch an annual 5K race to mark Matt’s birthday in July and add to the scholarship fund, the results were overwhelming. Well over 300 runners and walkers—including the College’s team of 42 staff, faculty, and alumni—gathered in Westbrook on a warm Sunday morning. Their entry fees, along with sponsorships from many businesses in Westbrook, resulted in an additional $19,000 for

generosity deeply touched the Rairdon family members, the award of the first scholarship to Candace Morong, a Westbrook resident and nursing major in the Class of 2015, was the high point for Laurie and Gary. “The Matthew Rairdon ’13 Scholarship is meant to assist a nursing student who portrays the qualities that family, friends, and co-workers at Mercy Hospital saw in Matt—compassion for people, passion for the nursing profession, and a strong work ethic,” says Laurie. “We are extremely grateful to Saint Joseph’s College for their care in choosing the right recipient for Matthew’s scholarship. “When we visit the Saint Joseph’s campus, we feel that Matthew’s spirit is alive in the place he loved so much. We are pleased beyond words that Candace, and the many nursing students who will come after her, will benefit from the scholarship.”

A Record of Generosity Through Family, Through Years Last January, Saint Joseph’s College lost a beloved friend and donor, Mrs. Anna M. Geiger, who passed away one day after her 92nd birthday. Her husband, Ray, a former College trustee who received an honorary degree in 1988, was the owner of Geiger, the largest family-owned promotional products company in the United States, and the editor of the Farmers’ Almanac. Following his death, Ann established the Ray Geiger Endowed Scholarship, a fund she and her son, Peter, regularly supported. The fund assists students majoring in communications, the field that Ray loved and labored in during his lifetime. According to Peter Geiger, also a past Saint Joseph’s trustee and honorary degree recipient in 2014, “Many years she and I would meet the recipients of the Ray Geiger Scholarship on campus,” he says. “She always loved the letters she received from those benefitting from the funds. And, she’d always write back offering words of encouragement.” Over the years, Ann would occasionally call the College to check on the growth of the endowed scholarship, and to inquire about the size of the award that would be granted to one or more students that year. Her concern always was that the scholarship was large enough to make a difference in lightening a student’s burden.

Before her death, Ann put aside funds for each of her children to dedicate to a charity of their choice. Knowing that she wanted to provide larger grants to Saint Joseph’s students, Peter directed a portion of the funds on her behalf to the Ray Geiger Endowed Scholarship.

Her concern always was that the scholarship was large enough to make a difference in lightening a student’s burden. If you were to peruse the College’s file containing correspondence with Ann, you would find among our thank-you letters for her generosity, her many handwritten notes expressing her thanks for being invited to campus events, or for being remembered by the College in some way. Ann Geiger was a model to her family of the strong values of generosity and compassion that make giving a true joy. Saint Joseph’s College is honored that she remains a part of the life of the College and of the lives of our students through the perpetual fund that she established.

All Hands In for the Hall of Fame Saturday, September 13, 2014, marked an important day in the history of Saint Joseph’s College and its Athletics Department. Not only was it the induction of the 12th Class of the College’s Hall of Fame but also the unveiling of the newly constructed Hall of Fame Room on the second floor of the Harold Alfond Center. The room, celebrating the achievements of our student-athlete alumni, also celebrates the collaborative environment that is a key component to the character of the College. John Wassenbergh, III ’96 served as the volunteer chair of the project and worked 15

with Heather Plati, annual fund and leadership gifts officer, and Brian Curtin, director of athletics, to help raise $58,000 in funds for the room. With the outstanding support of individual donors, corporate partners, and participants in Saint Joseph’s annual Golf Classic, the Hall of Fame Room will continue

the fiscal year on the plus side—with positive operating results, growing net assets, and concrete plans to continue sustaining the future.

To balance current and future needs, the College employs diversified investment and spending strategies. We’ve structured our portfolio to build the endowment’s inflationadjusted purchasing power, while allowing for five percent of its trailing three-year average for operating expenditures.

Continuing the development of a new website with an expected launch date in the first quarter of 2015

In spite of an increasingly competitive higher education market, the College ended the fiscal year on June 30, 2014, with a positive operating net of $376,000—an increase of $88,000 from last year. Total net assets also followed a growth trajectory. Driven by favorable investment returns on our endowment, the College’s assets grew by $2.6 million over fiscal year end 2013. The majority of College revenue comes from students enrolled in the residential and online education programs. In 2014, students provided 93 percent of the College’s total operating revenues in the form of tuition, fees, and room and board. Other sources, including gifts, appropriated endowment income, and services such as facility rentals, also contributed to revenues. These supplemental revenues reduce tuition pressures, and thereby further raise Saint Joseph’s as an affordable educational institution.

Celebrating Our Endowment, Looking Ahead The market value of the College’s endowment rose to $19.1 million over the fiscal year, the highest point in the College’s history, marking a total return for the period of $3.4 million. Of that, $952,000 was appropriated 17

Strategic Plan Matters In 2014, the College community engaged in the continued development of our 10-year strategic plan, Sustaining the Promise: Toward Saint Joseph’s College Second Hundred Years. The plan, approved by College trustees in September 2014, anticipates the College will achieve its strategic goals through these major initiatives: •
