2023 Annual Report

Message from the Scientific Director

It is with great pleasure that I present the report for the Centre for Applied Health Research (CAHR). The year 2023 was remarkable for the CAHR and its 47 active members. External funding totalled over $24 million, while peer-reviewed publications and presentations numbered 55 and 61, respectively. Additionally, the CAHR contributed to 17 internally driven projects to facilitate SJCG decisionmaking. These projects and dissemination efforts represent new knowledge relevant to the programs and services provided by St. Joseph’s Care Group. Internally, the CAHR supported the organization via evaluation efforts, including organization-wide employee experience and client satisfaction surveys.

As evidenced by the work described on the following pages, the breadth of the expertise offered by our membership base is exceptional. Together, we are working to inform the care provided at St. Joseph’s Care Group and beyond.
My thanks to all, and best wishes.
Sincerely,

Purpose
The Centre for Applied Health Research conducts high quality research, engages in knowledge translation, and supports St. Joseph's Care Group in the creation of new knowledge relevant to Mental Health & Addictions, Rehabilitative Care, and Seniors’ Health.

Core Staff

Hillary Maxwell, Research Statistician
Hillary Maxwell, PhD Candidate, MPH, works as the Research Statistician at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG). Hillary develops and advises statistical methodology, conducts statistical analyses, and interprets and translates statistical results for various SJCG research projects, and external project collaborations. Her knowledge translation activities include writing reports for stakeholders (e.g., SJCG leadership) and preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications. Hillary’s experience includes externally funded studies and projects initiated from within St. Joseph’s Care Group.

Shayna Cummings, Research Coordinator
Shayna Cummings, MSc, works as the Research Coordinator at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group. Shayna coordinates the team’s research projects throughout the research cycle, from conception to result dissemination. This coordination and assistance includes project consultations, literature searches, funding and Research Ethics Board applications, data collection, data analyses, and knowledge mobilization activities. These knowledge mobilization activities involve preparing reports, manuscripts, and presentations, along with organizing and planning events, such as the annual Showcase of Health Research. Shayna also provides mentorship and supervision for research interns and assistants, practicum students, postdoctoral fellows, and volunteers with the Centre for Applied Health Research.

CAHR-Involved Internal Committees & Working Groups

External Partners
Members of the CAHR have been working with our colleagues at the Centre for Research on Safe Driving (CRSD) at Lakehead University Hillary Maxwell is an Associate Member of the CRSD and Michel Bédard is the CRSD’s Director. The partnership has resulted in numerous research projects and publications.
Our partnership with Wesway Inc., an organization that provides respite services, continues to develop. Over the years, we continued our efforts to provide an array of supports including client satisfaction, as well as evaluation for several Wesway programs funded by the Home and Community Care Support Services North West.
Since 2021, the CAHR began working with partners at Matawa Education and Care Centre to develop a holistic framework to evaluate how various facets of academic, cultural, and lifeskills programming are meeting the needs of the student body.

Awards in Applied Health Research
The St. Joseph’s Care Group Awards in Applied Health Research are available to full-time graduate students at Lakehead University pursuing research related to the service areas of SJCG. The recipients must be working with a supervisor who is a member of the Centre for Applied Health Research. In 2023, the CAHR was pleased to offer this award to Chelsea Noël, Ishaq Malik, Jillian Zitars, and Lauren Dalicandro.

Annual Report
2023 marks the ninth Annual Report by the CAHR. We see this as a unique opportunity to summarize our work over the last 12 months, and to look forward to developing future goals and activities.

Website
Our website, www.cahr.sjcg.net, provides information and resources related to centre activities. Our research gateway describes, in detail, the stages of the research cycle, and the assistance and tools available to CAHR members and SJCG staff at each stage of their research. Our site has been designed to make our services and resources more accessible to all stakeholders.
Showcase of Health Research
In 2004, the former Research Department held the first annual Showcase of Health Research. Since then, the event has become the premier annual venue for the dissemination of research relevant to the health of Northwestern Ontarians. The 2023 event was held on February 10th at the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Centre. There were over 200 registrants for this event, and a total of 35 poster and paper presentations.
