State of the City Address to Residents Happy New Year, friends! I hope this finds you happy and healthy. 2022 was a wonderful year for South Jordan. Our City is known for its unique neighborhoods, sense of community, beautiful parks, high quality of life, and a business-friendly economic environment. The secret is out about South Jordan because we are one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Over the past year, we successfully secured funding from the state legislature to complete our final interchange at Bangerter Highway, working collaboratively with UDOT to ensure Bangerter will go under 9800, similar to our other two interchanges. This was significant as it will not impede on the middle school and will also allow the pedestrian bridge to remain at its current location, securing the safe walking route across Bangerter. Our new splash park is under construction on Redwood Road, and we could not be more excited to offer this amenity to the community! The recirculating system is designed for water conservation and will help provide family fun and relief from the heat while prioritizing sustainability and drought-friendly protocols. Mayor Dawn R. South Jordan has developed a reputation for innovative solutions for smart growth to ensure our long-term success, as well as the health and well-being of our residents. We named Ivory Homes our Corporate Citizen of the Year for their work with us to provide affordable workforce housing for our police, firefighters, City staff, and teachers. We launched the state’s first water purification facility that cleans recycled water to drinking water standards, which has the potential to add an additional resource to our water portfolio in the state. As a community, we saved more water through conservation methods than any other member agency in the Jordan Valley Water District. (Thank you!) Google Fiber also continues to make progress in our city. We had a great deal of exciting growth in our economic landscape in 2022. We issued 260 new businesses licenses this year to restaurants like Munch Kart, Zulu Grille, Sergio’s Pizza, and Happy Teriyaki; several health and wellbeing businesses like, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa and EOS Fitness; numerous additional office spaces; and so many more. We have also had amazing growth in existing businesses, including Ultradent, which is our second largest employer in the City with 1,633 employees. They’ve been in South Jordan since 1990 and they continue to contribute to our economic health.
Larger employers also continue to move into South Jordan, bringing jobs to the City. In 2022, AmTrust Financial Services created 40 new jobs with a plan to hire a total of 180, PointClickCare Technologies added 200 jobs, and Psomas Corp added 39 jobs. In addition, the City hired 5 new firefighters for Station 64. Finally, I want to recognize a business that has been here longer than most of our residents and continues to give to our community—the beautiful Glenmoor Golf Course. Not only does Glenmoor help us maintain critical green space in our City, they offer so much in the way of recreation and community engagement. In 2022, they also partnered to create the first-ever unified golf program in Utah. We appreciate all that Glenmoor does for our community. We are working hard to ensure our economic landscape continues to grow and thrive, and there are several exciting announcements in the works for this year! I want to thank all of our business owners in South Jordan for the vital role they play in our community and economy and each of you for the service you give. Here’s to a wonderful 2023! CHECK FOR LEAKS A great way to save water and money is to ensure your home is leak free. Check all faucets, pipes, and toilets periodically for signs of running water. If you suspect you may have a leak and cannot find it, contact the city at 801-446-HELP for assistance.

Renewing Our Commitment to a Sustainable Community As the new year begins, we’re reflecting on the first year achievements of our Wattsmart Communities program and Energy Action Plan. In partnership with Rocky Mountain Power (RMP), South Jordan brought together elected officials, staff, and key community stakeholders to develop a shared energy vision. We committed to carrying out our Wattsmart plan during 2022 and 2023 with the idea of promoting clean and efficient energy use to help build a healthy and sustainable community. Based on resident and stakeholder feedback, the City identified the following three key values: keep utility costs affordable, improve air quality, and support sustainable economic development. Achievements During 2022, the City completed a recommissioning of City Hall. Recommissioning involves doing an engineering study to identify low- and no-cost actions to improve a facility’s energy use, such as readjusting HVAC controls. Working with RMP, the City facilities staff lowered City Hall’s annual electricity costs by an estimated $8,521. The City also received an incentive payment from RMP for $3,451. The City has also added its first plug-in hybrid vehicles to its fleet, along with charging stations. These three vehicles are used by City building inspectors who make frequent, short trips around the City, making this type of vehicle a wise investment. The City is always evaluating the best type of vehicle for the work that will be done—and the most cost-effective way to do it. The City has already been using hybrid fleet vehicles for about a decade. With every vehicle, the City’s fleet manager uses several metrics to determine the return-on-investment. The City fleet will keep moving forward using this strategic, data-driven process to make sure our fleet and equipment plan advances our energy values. Next Steps What’s next for the City’s Wattsmart Program? More energy savings! In 2023, we’ll be providing residents and business owners with more ways they can save. Look for tips and information on rebate programs in the eNewsletter, social media, and right here in the Focus. You can get started by checking out wattsmarthomes.com to find savings on appliances and devices that keep you comfortable and your energy bills low. Also check out Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program that lets you purchase renewable energy credits for as low as $1.95 a month and turns those funds into community projects that reduce emissions. It will take all of us to build a healthy and sustainable community.
