Upward wage pressure for staff has been compounded in many areas and overcoming this problem will continue to be a challenge for Clubs throughout 2022-2023 and beyond. While our Club has begun to mitigate our staff shortage, we have still seen a variance of almost 15% in our payroll to the operating budget; this already included an increase of nearly 25% the prior year.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Inflation has also had an enormous impact on many basic raw materials and components that the Club needs to provide members the experience they have come to expect. Consider some of the following individual cost increases reported having to deal with this year, with even higher inflation statistics for majority of 2022 and just a few examples of the impact on operations operating expenses are currently 12% higher than budget and will likely continue to rise with increased costs and Club usage.
While the impact of the pandemic on Club results has lessened, it has still greatly affected the operating results of our Club throughout 2022 as inflation continues to take a toll on our operations.
While made every effort to project inflation with our last dues increase, we continued to see costs outweigh our revenue – staff along with budget and finance committee, will be diligently examining the market to determine the best course of action for 2023 and beyond.

In February 2022, our Club embarked on the first steps with a new operating platform to enhance our communication through a new website and mobile application. However, to date the majority of our membership has not taken advantage of several capabilities the platform has to offer. With increased traffic throughout the Club, we are beginning to increase our security measures and the first step begins with all of you The Clubessential platform allows members to add a headshot into their profile that will populate across all backend systems. This will allow Club management and staff to be able to enhance your member experience through name personalization, correct charges and security throughout the Club. The system also allows you to add preferences into your account, choose communication groups and update any allergies/dietary restrictions Below you will find details on how to update your profile, add a headshot and add preferences. If you need assistance logging into your account, please contact Marissa Rehberger at marissa.rehberger@sjccjax.com. Operation 36 is back for the fall and is sure to fill up fast for both our ladies and junior programs. We want to give our golfers the best introduction and a long term development plan to become a skilled golfer. Operation 36 is the fastest growing golfer development model and technology that is being integrated in coaching programs around the world The program gives our staff away to organize a golfer’s development and measure improvement over time The end goal is to get all our golfers to shoot (par) 36 from a full tee box! Please email josh wolfe@sjccjax com for more information!
Fall is right around the corner, and I am certain every member of San Jose Country Club is looking forward to the cooler temperatures These better days are certain to keep the golf course very busy in the upcoming months so please be mindful of the club rules and regulations. We please ask that golfers check in prior to play, have all member and guest names in the tee sheet, and confirm with staff if you will be walking or riding. This not only sets our operation up for success but helps us better serve our membership by having bags loaded and charging correctly.

With the recent closure we performed the routine cultural practices that take place at courses throughout the world. We vertical mow the greens surfaces, topdress with sand, aerify, vertical mow again, remove debris, brush, and then mow. It seems like a lot going on in a week just on the greens. However, we also aerify fairways, tees, collars, and rough areas. This year the rains have kept us from topdressing fairways like we had planned prior to the Superintendent’s Revenge, much to my dismay With all these cultural practices taking place, there is a required amount of time for the healing process to take place Weather plays a huge part in the healing process and can have at times, a very negative effect Overcast days, heavy downpour rains keeping the soil at field capacity for extended periods of time, even standing water in some cases Aerification is necessary to maintain the health of the turf and soil so the course can withstand the rigors of supporting the game of golf Divot recovery, wear tolerance to cart and foot traffic, and the negative effects of weather Please bear in mind when playing a course after any recent aerification, it takes time to heal. The surrounding photos and paragraph tell what we do out here during the closure.

First to arrive was the Torque Fitness Tank MX indoor sled which is in the main fitness hallway and is a devilishly brutal piece of equipment. We also have an endless rope climber from Torque Fitness that will be mounted and ready to set your arms on fire very soon! One of the other early arrivals in the piece that I am most excited about. It’s called an MYE Bodyscript Ascend body composition analyzer. With this piece, we have replaced our old analog scale with the latest digital scale, incorporating near infrared scanning to deliver some of the most accurate body composition measurements available today In addition to the equipment that has already arrived, we have also ordered a Precor Adaptive Motion Trainer, Precor EFX 885 Elliptical, and a Peloton Commercial Spin Bike. We expect everything to be here by the end of the month and we can’t wait to show it all off! If you would like a demonstration or to learn more about the benefits of our new equipment, please shoot me an email or feel free to reach out to any of our trainers for more information. chase.chenoweth@sjccjax.com.
The trainers and I love attending conferences and new certifications where we stay at the forefront of knowledge and skills to help our members achieve all of their wellness goals A few of us recently attended the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association Conference in Miami where we immersed ourselves in a multitude of educational sessions as well as attended the tradeshow. For Fitness and Wellness professionals that tradeshow is like being a kid in a candy store! It’s over 360,000 square feet of the latest and greatest equipment and vendors in the world. They have everything you ’ ve heard of and even things that you had no idea existed.
FITNESS & AQUATICS NEWS AND EVENTS
The trainers and I were on a multiday mission to put our hands on as many different pieces of equipment and technology as we could, to sourcing the best new equipment and upgrades for our members. We had a tough time narrowing down the list to fit our budget for this year, but I think selected some amazing new pieces and state of the art upgrades. Some of you may have already seen and used some of the new equipment.
As another phenomenal summer season comes to a close, there’s some exciting buzz in the Fitness Center!
