We are heading into a special time of year, and a favorite at San Jose Country Club The Autumn and the following holiday season always bring a sense of joy and excitement at the Club Beginning with cooler days on the golf course and tennis courts and our little ones dressed for our Fall Festival, leading into the excitement around Santa, holiday dance parties, and the Club Holiday Party in December. We are thrilled to let the festivities begin!

In addition, the Board and Strategic Committee, in conjunction with our professional staff have been reviewing our Capital improvement model. The remaining projects for the 2022 calendar year are on time and target. Our new hydro tennis court will be complete end of the month and construction of our pickleball courts will begin in early December with a completion date of mid January 2023.

More than ever before, our members have different needs and interests We understand and will adhere to practices that create raving fans, are financially responsible, and are predicated on market conditions

The key concepts behind long term, sustainable financial success are as follows:

The club's operating ledger is not the financial driver It is not meant to be and never will be, because we set the operating ledger to break even excluding depreciation Break even is not a financial outcome The operating ledger is the vehicle for delivering services and amenities to our members The money flowing through the operating ledger is consumed every year by members enjoying the club While cutting expenses will lessen the operating dues a member pays, it will also negatively impact the member experience.

The club's financial driver is the capital ledger as manifested by capital income and capital investment. Clubs with a strong balance sheet have generated adequate capital income over time. We have strengthened our capital balances over the last two years and will continue to ensure the same path moving forward.

Setting dues appropriately, strengthening purchase practices, managing working capital, and properly funding capital reserves are time tested practices of successful clubs.

Finally, thank you for your participation in the 2023 2025 Board member elections This ever important part of our culture is necessary to keep the club relevant for the long term Please welcome: Mr Eric Berzsenyi, Mr John Pomroy, Mr Doug Saunders, and Mrs Lauren DeAlexandris to our SJCC Board of Governors We will also begin the process of Committee development in the next few weeks If you have a desire to serve your club in a greater capacity, please inquire with me, a fellow board member, or our executive leadership team

As “winter” approaches, and weather cools, please visit the Club calendar, website, and social media pages to see the exciting events planned in the coming months culminating with our Club Holiday Party in December!

As always, thank you for the continued support of your Club.

Many projects began in October once the weather started somewhat cooperating. Although we began our fall nematode control measures a month earlier than scheduled, September, we made our final applications in October. Sampling showed that we were at or above threshold level for sting nematodes, 11 per 100 cc of soil. Of the 4 samples taken from #14 green the total number combined was 40, showing that we were at 10 per sample, which is at the threshold level. Other greens sampled showed lower numbers, i.e., #12 had a count of 2. Not near threshold levels but still present in the soil and plant roots. We will sample again 2 weeks after our last application to help us determine our spring protocol for nematode suppression.

We began our much awaited sunlight enhancement program on holes 14 / 15 and 2 / 7 These 2 areas have been on the agenda for several years and in fact work began with trimming and cleaning the large oaks behind 14 green about 15 years ago The scrub and trees along the fence line that were leaning toward neighboring properties have been removed reducing the early afternoon shade from the green surface It was noted, that instead of shade hitting the green at 2:30 p m it was still off the surface at 4:00 p m once the clearing was completed The oaks have been trimmed and interiors cleaned to help bring the canopies back to the desired upright growth habit, much like we have done on the oak in front of #7 green over the years This trimming and cleaning will help with increasing our afternoon sunlight to the entire area of 14 green and 15 tee We try and remember the adage, morning to mid day sunlight grows the grass, mid day to evening sunlight keeps the soil temperatures warm, which in necessary for good Bermudagrass growth.

Our final project of topdressing the fairways was completed on the 31st of October. We have been not so patiently waiting to get this project done since the August aerification. However, due to the excessive rains in late August and through the month of September we were unable to accomplish this until now. Optimum would have been to apply the sand to the freshly aerified fairways to allow for the sand to get into the open holes and dilute the ever growing organic mat in the soil. Sand topdressing does many things, but the most notable to the golfer is the firming and smoothing of the surfaces for play Agronomically, sand topdressing helps again with the dilution of organics and aids in capillary air space for root growth and water infiltration Ultimately, it helps us get back on the fairways after rains

FITNESS & AQUATICS NEWS AND EVENTS

As we approach the holidays and the warm joyful feelings that you just can’t get enough of, I think this is a great time to remind everyone what fitness is really about! Everyone thinks of staying fit differently… Some want to get buff; some want to drop weight; some want to recover from an injury; some want to elevate themselves in athletics; some want to destress; and then there are those that have decided fitness just isn’t something they are interested in at all While I’m personally of the opinion that anything motivating you to get in here is great, all of the above mentioned items aren’t quite what fitness at its core is really about. The roots of staying fit lie in quality of life! Many if not most reasons for working on your fitness lead back to quality of life whether you realize it or not (see above mentioned examples). Again, while any reason to exercise is a good one, consider that over the last couple centuries life expectancy has steadily risen. What good is a longer life if you aren’t able to enjoy those extra years!? All too often those extra years can lead to an able mind being imprisoned in an unable body The good news is that there is a clear way to not only tack on more of those extended years, but also to make sure you are able to make the most of them! Your key to unlocking this potential is something you already have access to, the SJCC Fitness Center! We’ve got the top notch facility, great equipment, and most importantly the best highly educated trainers you could ask for! I challenge each of you to take a hard look at yourselves and your families and ponder on all the things that you still want to accomplish or be a part of! Do it for you; do it for your spouse; do it for your kids; do it for your friends! No matter what your age or condition, there is no better time than the present to add some fitness into your life plan!

Kids Kids Club Club

As our Club continues in the pursuit of offering the best facilities, programming, and professional staff for the benefit of our members, we are steadily evaluating current offerings and making operational adjustments to remain competitive in our market. To that end, starting November 1 the Club will increase the daily, monthly, and Kid’s Club Dinner childcare rates. The daily drop in rate will be $10/hr per child, the monthly unlimited rate will be $150 for the first child and $75 for each additional child, and the Kid’s Club Dinner rate will be $30 per child. We appreciate your understanding and we look forward to providing an even more fun, enriching, and safe Club experience for all of our youngest members!
