FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow members, Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2022 at SJCC! From the upcoming Pool Cats competitions to an evening outside at the Donald Ross Terrace, to the multiple golf offerings for our ladies and gentlemen, I hope that all our members and their families have been enjoying the myriad of experiences this Spring.

With several new projects underway, we are accelerating our strategic planning efforts and expect to be bringing soon to the membership some very exciting plans for capital improvements. We understand that while we accomplished some of our goals with the completion of the Clubhouse renovation, we understand that other areas of our facility are aging and we need to invest prudently in the future of our club. We have our recent membership survey, and a new Capital Reserve Study to build on; we look forward to engaging in a Master plan to consider capital improvement options that are available to us.

In addition, The Club has been busy across all outlets, and we continue to see usage

increase in all departments. San Jose was proud to host another successful Club Championship Golf Tournament in April, congratulations to our Club Champions, Aaron Fitzpatrick and Emma Joost! We were also able to engage in another tradition for the first-time post-pandemic; our Tennis Member-Guest was re-invigorated with over 500 attendees and continues to be a testament to some of the best tennis programming in our city.

We look forward to our Social & Entertainment committee, in conjunction with our professional staff, to continue the path of engaging events in celebration of our 75th Anniversary. The Pool season is just around the corner, and you will see a new service experience enhancement that will keep the good times rolling throughout the Summer.

GOLF NEWS May is here and it will be sure to bring the summertime temperatures with it. Lions Pride Member Guest will take place Thursday, May 12 – Saturday, May 14. Please call the golf shop for assistance with your reciprocal needs. The golf course and practice facilities will be closed for aerification from Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, June 10. The golf shop will be open limited hours from 8am – 3pm to assist you with reciprocals, picking up your golf bag and access to the golf shop.

Congratulations to our Club Champion Aaron Fitzpatrick who carded a 54-hole total of 3 under par 213. Aaron shot rounds of 71, 70, & 72 to capture his first club championship. Conditions were tough as the wind picked up throughout the day all three

rounds, well played Aaron! Winning the Ladies Club Championship was defending champion Emma Joost with a 36-hole total of 164. Shar Donovan took the ladies net division with a 36-hole total 144. Dean Scott provided a stellar second round score to jump the leaderboard carding a 139 36-hole total in the men’s net division. Tommy Donovan Jr. also came back with a second-round score of 73 carding a 36-hole total of 150 to take the men’s blue gross championship. John Pomroy won on an exciting first hole playoff carding a 36-hole total of 152 to take the men’s gold gross championship. Congratulations to all, what a great weekend we had for our Club Championship!

Golf through the transition:

HEAR THE DIRT

As we transition from dormant bermudagrass to growing bermudagrass the greens protocol changes. Namely, with the amount of sand required to fill the turfgrass canopy to insure a smooth ball roll with minimal resistance. Typically, through the winter months we are applying 25 to 50 pounds of sand per 1000 square feet of greens surface depending on the growth of the turf for that point in time. As the turf begins to grow, we increase the weekly application rates anywhere from 75 to 125 pounds per 1000 square feet to match the growth rate. This may seem like a wide range in rates, however, turfgrass is a living organism that has varying growth rates throughout the year. Turf growth is regulated by temperature, sunlight, moisture, and nutrient availability. Some of these influences can change on a monthly, weekly, daily, or even hourly basis. Not only do we use visual observations, but we also have a couple of tools we use daily to help us determine topdressing amounts and when to regulate growth rate. We use the USGA stimpmeter to assign a number to the resistance to roll on the greens. This resistance to roll is often deemed as “speed of the green”. The lower the number the greater the resistance, the higher the number the less resistance there is to ball roll, i.e., 8 has a greater amount of resistance than 10. This number helps us determine the amount of sand that is to be applied with each topdressing. The goal of topdressing is to fill the turf canopy creating less resistance on the ball by the leaf blades. We also use a Growing Degree Days model developed by a lab coat at University of Wisconsin- Madison.

These GDD readings help us determine our use of trinexapac-ethyl, a growth regulator that stunts upward growth creating a denser compact growth habit of the turf. The greater the GDD number, the faster the plants are metabolizing the growth regulator. The faster the plants eat, the more often we must apply. In the winter we may apply growth regulators every 10 to 14 days but in the summer, we may apply every 4 or 5 days to maintain proper growth regulation.

In our protocol, nutrient availability is probably the least variable part of all the influences. Our fertility program remains the same throughout the year to maintain a constant and consistent supply of nutrients for the plants. We utilize 4 blends of nitrogen sources, and 4 potassium sources, all in slowly available forms. Each is done in a sequential rotation every week; this supplies the turf with.165 pounds of available nitrogen and .5 pounds of potassium per 1000 square feet of turf.

I hope this bit of information will help you transition your game from dormant to growing Bermuda as we move in to the growing season.

FITNESS & AQUATICS As school ends and summer begins, youth activities at San Jose begin to ramp up. Between our Tennis Summer Camp, Junior Golf Camp and the Pool Cats Swim Team your children are sure to stay busy and have fun this summer! A friendly reminder that registration for our Pool Cats Swim Team is still available. Afternoon practices will begin on Monday, May 16 with three (3)sessions at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm. We will switch to morning practices tenatively on Monday, June 6 with practices held MondayFriday from 9:15am-10:15am. The cost is $250 per swimmer and $75 per swimmer ages 15-17.
