Stewarding Our Legacy

Improving Transparency & Engagement

One theme that came through clearly in the recent member survey was the desire for greater transparency and more direct communication regarding Board activities. Your feedback was heard, and we are taking action. To enhance transparency and engagement, we have established a series of open events throughout the year, with all members invited to attend On March 18 at 6:00 PM, the Membership Committee will host an open session for all members to discuss its goals and strategy for 2026 (in person and virtual) We are also pleased that our new Clubhouse Manager, Adrian Knight, and our new Membership Director, Kendahl Mills, will be in attendance This will be an excellent opportunity to hear firsthand about membership strategy, priorities, and how we are thinking about the future of our Club community. Then, on April 22 at 6:00 PM, the Board will host the first of our quarterly updates in 2026 for all members (in person or virtual). During these sessions, we will provide updates on Club strategy, financial results, and progress related to the Golf Course Master Plan and Facilities Master Plan These meetings are designed to give members the opportunity to move beyond simply reading Board minutes and instead engage directly with the Board throughout the year Additional details will be shared as these events approach, and I encourage you to attend and participate.

Golf Course Update

Our golf course looks outstanding, and I want to extend sincere thanks to Josh Urbanec and his entire maintenance team for their exceptional work. During the first two months of the year, we have experienced several periods of cold temperatures that have resulted in frost delays. While we understand these delays can be inconvenient, it is best practice to avoid traffic on turf during extreme cold and frost conditions to protect the longterm health of the course As the weather continues to warm, you will see fewer cartpath-only days While some rotational holes may still require cart-path-only restrictions, the number of affected holes will decrease The Golf Committee, Golf Shop, and Golf Course Maintenance team work closely together to ensure that decisions made during harsh weather conditions prioritize the long-term health and playability of the course. As good as the course looks right now, the plan is working. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to protect and preserve one of the Club’s greatest assets. Thank you for your continued engagement and commitment to San Jose Country Club

See you at the Club!

Tradition Lives Here

Welcome To Our New Members

Brogen, Benjamin, Cortland,

Archibald, Bridger Mowczan

I am a Jacksonville native and have been a member of San Jose Country Club since kindergarten, remaining actively involved throughout my youth and until college. The Club played a significant role in my upbringing, providing a strong sense of community, lasting friendships, and many formative experiences that have stayed with me throughout my life

While an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, I met my husband, who was attending law school at the time Following his graduation, his career took us to Charlotte and later to Seattle. Though we enjoyed these experiences, Jacksonville has always been home.

We are now thrilled to be back in Jacksonville, where we have chosen to raise our family With the recent arrival of our triplet baby boys, we are eager to rejoin San Jose Country Club and become active members once again It would mean so much to us to be part of the same community that shaped my childhood and to give our children the opportunity to grow up creating their own memories there.

Rod & Roxann

Penfield

Rod and Roxann have reached nirvana, as we are both retired after fulfilling careers in commercial nuclear power plant operations and teaching, respectively. We are blessed with two wonderful children (twins) both of which are Naval Aviators stationed here in Jacksonville. Our roots are midwestern and mountain west grown, and we enjoy visiting there to spend time with family Rod enjoys golfing, fishing (fly and other kinds), trap shooting, snowmobiling, woodworking, working in the yard, reading, movies, and time on the beach. Fitness is a priority for Roxann, and she enjoys sewing, crafts, reading, cooking (especially baking), and gardening. Roxann also enjoys walks on the beach as well as cleaning up after Rod (she must, we have been together 36 years) We are blessed with our health and a wonderful family

We look forward to being part of San Jose and to enjoying everything it has to offer

Golf Groove

A Message from the Golf and Grounds Committee

Winter is almost over! The Golf and Grounds Committee and the Golf Course Maintenance staff would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU for your continued patience with the elevated cart path restrictions and frost delay precautions. It is making a huge difference! This month, we want to pick right back up where we left off in and provide a few key pieces of information:

Course Care: Range Tee Patterns

Course Playability and Updates Member Experience/ELM/Andrew Green

Course Care: Range Tee Patterns

As spring approaches, many of us will be spending time on the practice range, looking to fine-tune our golf swings Here are a few small things we can do to help the range recover from winter and remain in excellent shape throughout the season:

Hit balls in a straight line, creating a linear divot pattern (see video)

Once you’ve completed a divot line of 23 feet, move over and start a fresh line.

Make your practice count! Hitting fewer balls with more intention is more beneficial than mindlessly swinging away.

Course

Playability and Updates

Cart Path Only Restrictions will end!

Currently, we are rotating 8 holes as Cart Path Only (CPO) through the shoulder season (December-March).

CPO was the number one recommendation from Dr. Brosnan and Dr. Kerns.

Turf health coming out of the winter is the best we’ve seen in years!

The CPO restrictions will end soon, but the exact timing depends on growth and temperature

Frost Delays

This year has been quite cold! Our frost delay system is as follows:

Frost delays remain in effect until temperatures reach 39 degrees, as measured by our weather station on the property (not your weather app).

The entire course will remain CPO until the temperature reaches 50 degrees Thank you again for your continued patience with this matter.

General Playability

Despite the cold weather, the course has remained in great shape

We are transitioning out of dormancy and preparing for growth this time of year.

GCM is aerating and drilling select areas on the course to encourage turf health and recovery.

Poa is appearing sporadically, but the Golf Course Management (GCM) team is actively managing it (achieving zero Poa is not realistic)

Bare or thin spots are being monitored and treated.

This time of year, disease is prevalent, and GCM is constantly monitoring and treating.

Brush and tree clearing will continue to improve sunlight, turf health, and air flow Every expert who has visited over the last decade (including USGA agronomists) has recommended a robust tree-removal program

Green speeds may be incon turf health remains our prio

Member Experience/ELM/And

Clubs (not push carts) are n to be carried through the pro shop.

Every committee is talking about member experience and how we can improve:

Please give us your input! Send an email directly to:

Matthew.saxton@synlawn.com

ELM/Andrew Green

We are still at the very beginning of the process, no real updates yet Andrew is working on our 1 draft and should be done in the next couple of months. st ELM is gathering info from the membership and committees Both plans are expected to be ready by the end of 2026! Connie Turner and Matt Saxton are talking to different groups about the process.

If you or your group would like a more formal update, please reach out, and we will make it happen.

Thank you again for making this the best membership in North Florida and for your continued patience as we navigate the winter season.

We are currently evaluating options and obtaining quotes for consumables (eg, range caddies, coolers)

Where Every Match Makes Some Noise

It is hard to believe that we are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of our Annual Tennis Member-Guest Tournament this year This event has become one of San Jose Country Club’s true signature traditions and, without question, the premier tennis event in Jacksonville each year. Kind Regards,

Racquet Sports

Here is my #1 Tennis Tip.

Whether you are playing singles or doubles, if you can take control of the middle of the court, you are going to win a lot of points and a lot of matches

In singles, you want to move your opponent around the court. Up and back, left and right to create an opening or force an error

In doubles, the easiest shot for your opponent is always going to be through the middle, over the lowest part of the net. Make sure someone is covering that area on every shot But it is important to hit balls through the middle to cause confusion, to the largest part of the court, and between players I tell people all time that hitting a low-trajectory ball t lands near the "T" can be a winn strategy in many doubles situations.

If you win the middle, you will win tennis Agree or disagree? Let me kn and we can discuss

Fitness & Aquatics

March is here, and 2026 is already moving quickly as we prepare for spring and summer The Fitness Center continues to build momentum, helping members stay motivated, strong, and ready for the busy season ahead

Pool season and swim team are approaching. Registration is planned for April, with practices beginning in May; additional details will be shared once finalized. We are excited to welcome back several returning coaches and lifeguards, and we are currently hiring additional lifeguards If you know someone interested, please have them stop by the Fitness Center to apply

We are also pleased with the continued progress on the pool renovation The marcite is being redone, and the refreshed finish will enhance both the appearance and overall swimming experience. We anticipate completion within the next month and look forwar to welcoming everyone back to a updated pool environment for a stron spring and summer season at San Jose.

As we move through the early part of th year, I encourage members to focus o consistency over intensity in their fitness routines

Sustainable progress comes from realistic, repeatable habits three to four purposeful workouts each week that include strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and mobility work Strength training becomes increasingly important as we age, helping preserve muscle mass, support joint health, and improve balance. Even short, focused sessions can deliver meaningful results when done consistently.

Mobility and recovery should also remain part of your routine. Spending just ten minutes before or after a workout, stretching, foam rolling, or improving flexibility can reduce soreness and improve long-term performance If you are unsure where to start, please connect with our fitness team We are happy to design a program tailored to your goals, whether preparing for golf season, working toward a personal milestone, or simply feeling better day to day.
