FROM THE PRESIDENT Summer is here and the club is alive and thriving! Our annual member opinion survey was a success, providing the board and management staff with some great feedback – we look forward to utilizing towards building our Club of the future. Congratulations to the San Jose Team on creating one of the most memorable Lion’s Pride Tournaments yet. The course was playing well, and the team topped off the event by creating a Havana Night themed gala- one of the most festive nights on record. I am excited to see what they create next year! After an extremely successful event, our Golf Course Maintenance team has continued to remain busy. We received our annual visit from USGA Agronomist (John Foy) and will provide his recommendations and findings as soon as they are made available to us. Reminder- the golf course will be closed, May 31st through June 10th for aerification as we enter growing season. Summer means it’s pool season and our Pool Cats Swim Team are off to a great start with a victory over Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. I invite you to come out and enjoy the pool this summer as we’ve enhanced our food & beverage experience and enjoy the new furniture. Our temporary Pool Bar will serve as a benchmark, and we will monitor operations, usage, and member feedback to determine
our course of action with our next phase in renovations. As we have communicated through the last few newsletters, the interest in San Jose has never been higher. Applications for membership continue to pour in at a pace that is exceeding attrition. Considering this level of interest, the Board has been discussing changes to our membership application process, and the individual membership category caps and overall membership cap. With Club operations and member usage up, the team is doing an outstanding job making San Jose the place to be. In addition, and in conjunction with the Board’s goal to continue to provide transparency, we will be adding a new section on the member website, Club Resources. This will be dedicated to providing various documents to allow for our membership demographic to review: Club Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, Financial Reporting, and Strategic plans. As always, I welcome any feedback you may have about the Club and how we can collectively make it better. We look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

Oak Marsh, Amelia National, King & Bear and Slammer & Squire. Congratulations to our 2022 Lions Pride Member Guest Champions Jonathan Davis & Josh Scobee! It was a great shootout as always and at the end, five holes were not enough to determine our overall champions. Tying on Hole #18 with Matt Saxton and his partner Chris Walters we headed back to #10 tee for a playoff! Josh Scobee stuck the teams third shot to 3 feet and Davis tapped in for their par to take the title of Lions Pride Champions. It was a great weekend for golf and fellowship as the weather could have not been better! Thanks to all 120 participants for competing in such a great event, what a way to cap off our spring season. Josh Wolfe, PGA Head Golf Professional
TIP FROM THE PRO If your club is hitting too far behind the ball when you’re chipping, there’s a good chance your chest is not turning through the shot as much as it should. If this sounds like you, try hitting some short chip shots from a downslope. You don’t need to aim at the green; having a fairly steep slope is the key here. To pull off this chip, you’ll find that it’s necessary to feel like your body’s leaning with the slope at address. It will feel like most of your weight is on your lead side. During the motion, continue feeling your body leaning with the slope, and try to swing the club down and left along the slope. This is tricky at first, but before long you will be making clean contact. Once you start consistently getting the hang of it, move to a level lie, but continue to feel your body leaning left, and do your best to recreate the swing you were making on the downslope. Your contact should improve immediately. Hayes Farley, PGA Director of Instruction
HEAR THE DIRT I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Hayes Farley on the instruction tee after one of his lessons. We started out with our typical how’s the grass doing back here for you Hayes? Great, am I and the guys keeping the divots filled enough? Don’t want to add to the GCM workload. Perfect Hayes, we really appreciate y’alls help. He rolled right into a story of a recent round of golf which gathered my full attention. He was standing on the tee box getting ready to address the shot and around the mound came a golf course maintenance employee with a push mower. He waited for a second or two and another one came and another and another. He said, Crimany, there was at least a dozen guys push mowing the rough on this one hole. I had to say WOW, impressive that’s more people than I generally have on a daily basis and close the entire staff number. His compliment of; No, what’s impressive is what this small staff accomplishes every day. The multitude of jobs each encounter, their diversity in training, their ability to quickly switch gears as the plan changes. Shoot, just the way they all work together to a common goal. I gotta agree with my man Hayes on this one, so… Next time you are on the course, and you get a little angry because the bunkers haven’t been raked in front of the 8 o’clock tee time or you encounter a mower on a hole, know that it is not because we don’t care, it’s because we don’t have 12 extra people every day to just push mow rough. For more information on why player care and topdressing are so important to the quality of the course, please read the articles below.

FITNESS & AQUATICS School is out and summer has officially begun! This summer, the San Jose pool is without a doubt the place to be. During the summer months much of the focus typically shifts toward the pool, but this year pool utilization seems to be off the charts. Between private pool parties, aqua aerobics, swim team, swim lessons, gaga ball, and our members simply enjoying some pool time, the fun is never ending. This year, the pool may seem a little different thanks to a few new upgrades. First, a reminder that you can only enter through the gate located near the fitness center entrance and all members and their guests must check into the pool. Second, with our new and improved pool furniture, we ask that the umbrellas do not move around the pool deck; this can cause damage and shorten their life span. Our Food and Beverage team has significantly enhanced their service with a new poolside bar and upgraded menus. A reminder that we do not allow outside food or beverage into the pool area other than water bottles. If you haven’t already made a habit of enjoying our pool in the summer, this is the
year to start! Our amazing summer staff are 100% focused on making sure that everyone has an incredible, fun, and safe experience at the pool. For all of our aqua aerobics fanatics, our very popular aqua classes started last month and will continue until the weather gets too cold to bear (usually early October). These classes are an hour long and take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30am. The water is the perfect place to get in a great workout no matter what your fitness level. You can moderate your own intensity level and you can work around any achy joints that may hinder you on land. I highly encourage anyone that might be thinking about aqua aerobics to get out there and give it a try, you can thank me later for all the great results you’ll get! I look forward to seeing everyone enjoy some fun in the sun and a happy summer! Chase Chenoweth Director of Fitness & Aquatics
