FROM THE PRESIDENT Another month gone by and we are halfway through 2022! A huge thank you to our Golf Course Maintenance team and all their hard work during aerification. The golf course, post-aerification, is the best I’ve witnessed in all my years at San Jose. The weather cooperated and provided the maintenance staff with almost perfect conditions to complete their work. The most noticeable and one residual issue is on the greens, where intrusion grasses were removed and replaced with sod from nursery green. Dry conditions have prevailed through mid-June and the course, as well as our yards, need some rain. As many of you have probably noticed, construction of the new tennis court in the dirt lot has begun with the removal of several trees and roots. These are the first steps in the process of adding an additional state-of-the-art Har Tru Hydro court – this will ensure that we do not forgo any valuable court space when we begin the conversion of court #2 to pickleball in the fall. The old tennis shed has also been removed and concrete has been poured to begin working on drainage and physical construction of the new tennis shed. Our championship swim team is back in action

and has successfully maintained a winning record by finishing their regular season undefeated. They will compete from July 22 to July 24 at the River City Championship hosted by Bolles to retain their title of River City Champions. We wish you the best of luck and bring home the gold! Our pool cats are not the only thing making a splash; our new dining services and pool bar have been a huge hit this, Summer. We will continue to monitor member feedback and participation as this will be critical as we begin the next planning stages in our future enhancements including, in the design of our hardscape for any pool renovations. For all who could not attend, I’m here to say the Catalina Wine Mixer was an extremely successful event. I have heard nothing but positive comments from all who attended. With about 170 people in attendance, the team did a wonderful job of planning and running the event. Kudos to all involved. This is a testament to our associates and their efforts to continually provide our members with an exceptional experience.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Ben & Julie Bradley Todd & Lauren Gillean Christopher & Emily Goodwyn IN MEMORIUM On behalf of San Jose Country Club, our thoughts and prayers go out to all families during these difficult times.

David Williams David is survived by his spouse, Karen, children and many friends here at San Jose. David was a beloved member of our Club actively participating in golf and Club events. He will be deeply missed by all.

Through the 2021 LPGA Professionals Championship, I was able to earn one of 8 spots for Teaching & Club Professionals in the 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. We played at Congressional Country Club near Washington D.C., which has a rich history for championship golf. Playing in a major championship is an incredible experience and hard to describe. It is the top competition and the best hospitality for tour professionals. The course set-up is long with tucked hole locations, the rough is thick, and the green’s role true. Player dining is extra special at a major as the host facility goes above and beyond. We were treated to local favorites like crabcakes, a smoothie bar, and a great ice cream sandwich selection. Having grown up in Maryland, I had a nice gallery of family and friends. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent San Jose, and the PGA and LPGA Professionals inside the ropes at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. -Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth

TIP FROM THE PRO If you’re struggling with a slice when you hit your driver, the culprit is more than likely an open clubface, and it probably starts during your backswing. The next time you’re at the range, try keeping your clubface pointed at the ball as long as you can during your backswing. Even as you hinge your wrists, keep your clubface pointed at the ball. If you’re not used to this, it will absolutely feel weird. Persevere through the awkwardness, and start hitting some balls at halfspeed. At first, the ball will fly low and left (for a right-handed golfer). Keep at it, and keep hitting toward a target. After a while, you’ll start hitting some draws. When you start hitting draws the majority of the time, add some speed. As you continue getting the hang of it, try some longer clubs, eventually getting to your driver. With some practice, you’ll be on your way to stopping that slice. Hayes Farley, PGA Director of Instruction

HEAR THE DIRT Our weekly topdressing routine helps dilute ongoing organic matter accumulation and smooth the greens surfaces while minimizing the effects of grain. Periodically through aerification, we can introduce a large amount of sand into the soil profile further diluting organic matter. Our recent aerification and sand injection process allowed us to apply approximately 500 pounds of sand per 1000 square feet of green surface. Our typical topdressing consists of approximately 100 pounds per 1000 broadcast over the top of the surface. By injecting the sand, we were able to completely break the organic layer into the sand base. This will further aide in surface drainage and help firm the surface after the aerification process.

FITNESS & AQUATICS This has got to be one of the busiest summers that I can remember! Between the lack of rain making the pool an ideal summer hang out spot and over 100 swimmers on our swim team, the pool has been the place to be. San Jose pride always seems to peak during the summer months, and it seems to me that we have truly set a new standard this summer. Speaking of our swim team, the Pool Cats have had another outstanding year. We participated in seven (7) meets competing against other local country clubs and associations. The Pool Cats once again ended the year undefeated! During July, we will compete in our final meet of the season, the River City Championship, hoping to defend our title and bring home the gold for the second year in a row! As always, we will be hosting our Swim Team Bingo night on Thursday, July 7 at 6:30pm in the Ballroom. Remember, this is a free event to all Pool Cat Families.

Not only has the pool been busy, but our personal training and group fitness classes are seeing some of the highest participation in years. Whether you are swimming, using our personal trainers or participating in a group fitness class, we offer many other services to help keep you healthy. We offer massages, kinesio taping, TPI training, assisted stretching and much more! Our fitness staff includes two level 3 TPI trainers, two level 3 Pilates reformer instructors, a registered dietician, multiple master’s degrees in exercise science/nutrition, and one staff member halfway through a doctorate in physical therapy. If you are considering partaking in any of the above-mentioned services, want to talk to knowledgeable individuals or anything pertaining to health and wellness, consider reaching out to us before exploring other opportunities. We are available and happy to help! Chase Chenoweth Director of Fitness & Aquatics
