FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow Members,

As we enter a new year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on all that we have achieved together over the past year and to look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

This past year, our goal was to focus on enhanced membership experience. Expanded programing coupled with our traditional marquee events provided more opportunities than ever before for the members of San Jose to enjoy the club and share it with friends and family. Highlighting the year was our 75th anniversary celebration. It was one of a kind and sets the stage for 2025 when we will celebrate our golf course ’ s centennial!

Speaking of sharing the club with friends and family, I am proud to report that our membership numbers have grown significantly over the past year, and we have welcomed many new families into our community Thank you to everyone who introduced a new member to the club this year I encourage all our members to continue to spread the word about the club and to invite your friends and colleagues to join us

A lot of work went into making 2022 a year to remember at San Jose I would be remiss if I did not thank our immediate past President, Cary Helton for his dedication to the club In 2023 Cary will chair our Strategic Planning Committee as we continue to evaluate and implement our long-term strategies for San Jose Upon completion of 2023, Cary will have volunteered 10 years of his time serving in leadership at the club! We cannot express enough gratitude for your service

To the outgoing board members, Dan Brock, Stephen Joost, Josh Kennedy and Ladson Montgomery… You provided invaluable leadership through a 3-year period of time that was mostly highlighted by a global pandemic. The countless hours of free time you gave the club you love did not go unnoticed.

As we move forward in 2023, we are committed to maintaining the high standards of excellence that have made San Jose Country Club a beloved home for families in our community. We will continue to invest in the club's facilities and programming, and we will work closely with our members to ensure that we are meeting your needs and expectations.

Lastly, I am humbled to have the opportunity to serve as your club President, and I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful community Olivia and I look forward to seeing you all at the club and, in conjunction with our Board of Governors, working together to make San Jose Country Club an even better place for our members and their families

Stephen

Frick, Jr.

Happy New Year to all!

2023 is sure to be a great year at San Jose and we look forward to continuing our success from 2022! Since 1947 we have strived to be Jacksonville’s favorite gathering place for families and guests who cherish and share high quality lifestyle standards as our mission states in our pursuit of excellence We as a club should take appreciation in what we are able to enjoy each day and make it a priority to take part in course care Please be reminded it is our responsibility to help maintain our beautiful golf course by filling divots, raking bunkers, fixing ball marks, and parking golf carts in the appropriate areas.

There have been a few new key rules changes this year, please click here to better understand these changes,

Equitable stroke control – Some may know what this means and how it relates to your handicap, and some may not, but it is the maximum score which you can take per hole I see a lot of players that just pick up at double bogey, record their score and go on without taking the proper score. Next time you ’ re playing know what your maximum score can be per hole to maintain an accurate handicap.

Net Double Bogey. The maximum hole score for each player will be limited to a Net Double Bogey. This adjustment is more consistent from hole to hole than the Equitable Stroke Control procedure Net Double Bogey is already used in many other parts of the world and the calculation is simple: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive

If you have any questions about equitable stroke control, please contact me at josh.wolfe@sjccjax.com.

Saturday January 7th – Short Game Championship, 2:15pm shotgun Friday January 13th – MGA kickoff Party & 50/50 Raffle @5:30PM

We recently began phase 1 of our drainage enhancement project on the course The outfall ditch left of the cart path on hole 14, which is the main source of removing water from the back half of the golf course had not been dredged or cleaned out since 1997 Twenty-Five years ’ worth of silt and much had built up approximately 3 feet in the bottom of the ditch slowing and even holding back water from draining off the course This phase 1 will allow all of the drainage that has been installed over the years to work properly from this point forward. The ongoing plan is to monitor and clean this ditch every 3 to 5 years to ensure the intent of the design and maintain proper flow throughout the course.

December 14, USGA Agronomist, Jordan Booth visited the Club for a course consulting visit – we have conducted CCS visits on a semiannual basis, most recently with Dr. John Foy, retired USGA agronomist Many items were discussed focusing on greens care, tees, fairways, and drainage as priority It was reassuring that many observations were confirmation of best practices already in place, in addition with some new data collection methodology, that we will be implemented in the New Year

A separate communication will be sent in the New Year, outlining the report and will also be available in full on the San Jose Website

Congratulations

to Nick Clark, PGA (Ret ) for being awarded the Earl & Eleanor Kelly Long-Term Service Award Nick Clark, PGA served as the head golf professional for San Jose Country Club for 30 years, retiring in 2001. Todd Bork, PGA our current director of golf accepted the award on Nicks behalf during the December JAGA meeting

FITNESS & AQUATICS NEWS AND EVENTS

2023 has arrived and we ’ re geared up for another busy January over here in the Fitness Center. Each January I like to take a moment to reflect on the past year and then shift my focus toward all that I hope to accomplish this year. With that in mind, I recall a rather prophetic bumper sticker I read one day...It said something to the effect of “If you are too busy to make time for your personal wellness, personal illness will make time for you ” For many people the beginning of the new year can be a fresh start with a clean slate which often inspires great ambition for self-improvement We love having all the fresh energy and enthusiasm percolate through the Fitness Center and we want to see all of our members achieve their fitness and wellness goals in 2023. Like any other goal, it can often be very beneficial to consult or work with a professional to help you achieve that goal. If you want to retire at an early age or with a certain amount of savings/income, you’d probably consult with a financial advisor to help you develop a plan to accomplish that goal Fitness/wellness goals shouldn’t be any different Over the years SJCC has recruited and developed some of the best, most experienced, and highest educated Fitness staff you’ll find anywhere. They are here for you! They can help you develop goals and a personalized plan to help you achieve those goals. I encourage everyone who is starting fresh in the New Year to consider meeting with one of our amazing trainers. You might already have a great goal and an even better plan, but I guarantee you won’t walk away without learning something that will be of benefit If you’d like some help or have any questions about how to get started, stop by my office in the Fitness Center or shoot me an email at Chase Chenoweth@sjccjax com! Wishing you all a very happy and successful New Year!
