Dear San Jose Members,
Cold weather can be tough and even damaging for grass. We take great pride in maintaining a beautiful and playable golf course throughout the year. However, during a cold snap, warm-season grasses face unique challenges that can impact both their appearance and health Understanding how these grasses respond to sudden drops in temperature and what measures can be taken to protect them is essential for ensuring a high-quality playing surface year-round
Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda grasses like we have here at San Jose, thrive in the warmer months, growing most vigorously when temperatures are between 80 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit These grasses enter dormancy when temperatures drop significantly, turning brown but remaining alive beneath the surface They struggle in cold conditions and can suffer damage if exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures Frost damage can also weaken the turf, making it more susceptible to disease and pest infestations Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can cause cellular damage, leading to thinning and patchy areas that take longer to recover in the spring
Members also play a crucial role in preserving the health of our warm season grasses during cold weather. Being mindful of frost delays allows the turf time to recover before play resumes. Avoiding unnecessary traffic on dormant or frost-covered grass helps prevent damage that can take months to repair. Understanding the seasonal changes in turf color and texture helps set expectations for winter playability and course aesthetics.
San Jose Country Club is committed to providing the best possible playing conditions year-round. While cold snaps present challenges for warm-season grasses, proactive maintenance and member cooperation ensure that our course remains in top condition By working together, we can protect our greens and fairways, ensuring their health and beauty for future play
Cordially,
Josh Urbanec Golf Course Superintendent
